I do recall Todd saying the two were actually different, despite physical similiarities. I think he was the one that wrote up the meladaemon? The arcanaloth is not open content—it's very much owned lock, stock, and barrel by Wizards of the Coast. The meladaemon is not a "replacement" for it—they do very different things, despite the fact that they look somewhat similar. The meladaemon is something of a jackal humanoid, playing off the famine theme of that creature and the fact that a jackal is a scavenger who might do quite well in the onset of a famine since there's a lot of starved dead things to eat... at least for a while...
Yep. As James said, they're different critters conceptually, with the jackal appearance being the only thing really in common. And the 'loth is a furry, whereas the daemon's body is a soupy, black syrupy mixture of organs, virus lysed flesh, mucus, blood, and bile stretched over a skeleton.
The outward appearance of those guys was influenced by a unique 'loth named Trelmarixian in my home game (this guy). The pathfinder meladaemons are exceedingly distinct in what they represent and how they do it versus the AD&D arcanaloth, and explicitly so because of the non-open content thing with the arcanaloth. I love 'em to death, but they're a no no. You can however have things outwardly influenced by the jello 'loth from my home campaign (but to clarify again, the Pathfinder Trelmarixian is himself quite different in history, personality, and even in appearance in some ways from the one in my home campaign).

Just wondering: What are the chances of the couerl and deepcrow making it into Bestiary 3 if it comes about?
"Classic" feeling monster both old and new, those are.
I would think just about zero, given that both of them are NOT open content, and were only published in AP bestiaries with special permission from the source material rights holders.

Just curious, but which powers did you think fit, or didn't fit the meladaemon's theme?
The meladaemon in "Beyond the Vault of Souls" felt more like it was a continuation of the leukodaemon's disease control powers more than having self-standing famine abilities. The slimy doom thing for one. The idea of cancer as famine-related, though, is pure class, what with the person essentially eating themselves to death by way of misbehaving cells.

I have a copy of the 3.0 version of ToH and don't see how to get my paws on a copy of the revised version. As long as you have the permission to do so, please keep them coming. As a GM I can never have too many monsters especially quality monsters I can use again and again. Heck there are stuff I want to use from the Misfit book in a given campaign, especially the wolf-in-sheep's-clothing, the flumphs, the delvers, the tojinda and the rays. The new art on the delver and the tojinda are vast improvements over what was done in the 3E Monster Manuals. You mde the evil tree stump spooky enough to creep me out and made me want to spring this on my players. And the flumphs have always been lovable losers in my eyes but now they have a greater purpose and a real reason to interact with PCs.

Absolutely zero.
Both of those monsters are pretty much the only two rules elements we've done in Pathfinder that are NOT open content; we got special permission from the monsters' creators to do stats for them as a one-time deal.

The Revised ToH was released exclusively as a PDF book. You can still find it in any webstore where D20 PDFs are still being sold.
I do remember a discussion about a year ago about Tome of Horrors being released for Pathfinder RPG, but I don't think anything came out of it.

I think it's a shame... it's one of the books I regret not having bought, and I'm not very keen on purchasing PDFs. Anyway, I think I would not be the only one who'd like to see ToH monsters "upgraded" and revised to Pathfinder rules.

Ah, that one... a marvelous tome used by many Chelaxians for childrens' bedtime stories! ;)

I also much prefer physical books to PDfs so this is a treat for me when anything that got revised is put out in a book that I can buy and hold in my hands.
I agree, especially since I prefer to keep the laptops away from the gaming table. They are an ever present temptation to players to check email or the Paizo messageboards while a game is in progress.

That's what you get for preordering from Amazon. Paizo has no influence on their release dates, which are based as much on actual book release as they are on rat migrations in Botswana.

Thats what the subscriptions are for. A subscription to the Adventure Paths combined with a Pathfinder RPG subscription gets you this book for $33.99 with a free PDF copy. The AP are reasonably priced at $13.99 when subscribed to, and you get about 5 new monsters with every release that you can print out and store in a Bestiary Binder.

Definately. I hope to be in the first batch so I can burn a new DVD for work. Been holding off buring Psionics Unleased to DVD for just that reason, best to do them all at once.

Security, USB ports are locked down. And our computers have DVD Roms, not burners.
(Yes, our security procedures are better than the US Governments, Pvt. Manning)

Just got done skimming the PDF for the one thing I was super excited for, and then cried a little inside. Out of curiousity why are there not rules for the Hippogriff as an animal companion. The Sable Company wants to know! More seriously though I'm sure I can finagle it to work as one was just really excited to see it written up.

Hippogriffs are magical beasts, not animals, would be my first guess. :)

Oh I'm well aware, but in Korvosa there's the Sable Company, and the feat Sable Company Marine that lets you have a hippogriff as an animal companion. I was just hoping to see advancement for them or something, I can always just use the standard animal companion table and just make them be large size all the time and leave it at that.

To answer a couple of questions from the last few days:
We are currently processing subscriber orders and preorders; it'll take a few days to get through them all. The official retail release date is December 29, so any retailer who has it before that date is supposed to hold it until then.
Shipments have already gone out to our distributors, including international and book trade distributors, but we have no control over (or insight into) the shipping to individual retailers (including Amazon) from those distributors.

I have to say the art for the brownie is really fing creepy.
Yes...it's also somewhat...familiar...

That's specific world flavor, and as such has no place in a Bestiary, unfortunately. That said... presenting animal companion type stats and rules for the Sable Company's hippogriffs would make a fun blog post... hmmmmm...

I've only had time for a brief look through, but I like what I've seen so far.
A couple things I'd like to have seen:
1. A small table detailing the creatures that can be used as familiars (with Improved Familiar or otherwise)
2. A list of which new creatures can be summoned via the various Summon spells
3. More simple templates...I've always got Green Ronin's Advanced Bestiary, but boy howdy do I love me some templates.
Otherwise...very well done. Can't wait to give it a more thorough look.

I must admit I was a bit disappointed on how the PDF was set up. I would of liked it to be like the first Bestiary with everything linked to the page/creature.
Besides that one downfall I must admit this is an awesome addition to the Bestiary and I personally am looking forward to using some of these new monsters.
Few of my favorites:
Dragon Horse
Dhampir
Attic Whisperer
Banshee
Hippocampus
Leprechaun
Poltergeist
Like what they did with serpent folk
And I like the new Dragons
Even with that one downfall I mentioned for the PDF it is still well worth the price. For the creatures above as well as the abundance of others in this book, the art work is wonderful, the constructs are awesome, and the templates for other possible character races makes this one of the best books out there.
Congrats to Vic and the crew for doing it once again, I can't wait to get my hardbound copy. Keep up the great work.

Wow, ok, so those of you that have the PDF, just one question --- the 2 new inevitables are what exactly? Marut, Zelekhut, and Kolaryut are inevitabilties of justice, oaths, and death. What's the theme of the 2 new ones? (personally hoping they don't overlap WotC's 3 other news ones, the inevitables of time, wasting, and the one that prevents mortals from acquiring divinity)
