A dungeon-based adventure for 1st-level characters.
The ruined siege castles outside Absalom have long beckoned adventurers looking to make a name for themselves. Now an earthquake has cracked open one of these fabled ruins, and its lost mysteries and fantastic treasures lie exposed for the first time in centuries. But the tower's empty halls once more echo with living footfalls, and a new master has claimed the Fallen Fortress as his own. Can the PCs find a way to get inside its shattered walls? What ancient dangers and fresh threats will they encounter inside its crumbling chambers? And will the PCs be able to defeat the current Master of the Fallen Fortress?
Master of the Fallen Fortress is a dungeon-based adventure for 1st-level chararacters, written for the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game and compatible with the 3.5 edition of the world's oldest RPG. It also serves as an introduction to Pathfinder Society Organized Play (Paizo's constantly evolving, world-wide megacampaign). The adventure involves exploring an ancient, ruined tower and rescuing the captured Pathfinder held within.
This adventure is set outside the great city of Absalom in the Pathfinder Chronicles campaign setting, but can be easily adapted for any game world. It also contains a preview of the six new iconic characters from the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Advanced Player’s Guide, available August 2010.

My new Pathfinder group loved playing this, but it was only because they were new to Pathfinder in general. As a more experienced GM, this module was little more than an excuse to dungeon crawl. Not much story, no interesting NPC's or memorable villians, and few real role-play opportunities. I added some flavor and fluff of my own to make the evening for fun. Still, if you need a starter scenario on the fly, this works fine.
Monotonous and dull from a GM perspective but the players seemed to enjoy it. This is fair for a good introduction to Pathfinder for new players though.
Although the scenario was a little monotonous, the finale encounter made up for any boredom. The final twist is a hilarious move that we all found to combine challenge and comedy in an extremely excellent manner.
This is an excellent module for introducing both players new to Pathfinder and new to Fantasy RPG games in general to the system. It gets the players to learn to work as a team and use a few skills besides just combat ones.
It's easy to GM and fast, I can usually do it in under 3 hours and it gives most new players a sense of accomplishment when completed.
I pack a printed copy with spare chronicles in my briefcase all the time to events in case I'm needed to GM due to an overflow of new players.
Correct! Your FLGS *MUST* register with us and pay the minimum of $60 to participate. The charge pays for the shipping of the product, collating, boxes and promo material we put together for them for the event.
Again, the key is that your FLGS has to be the one to sign up...we cannot force them to give us $60...but, we have found that stores sign up fast if even only a few of their known customers ask them to participate.
Best,
Aldo

I run ROTR at my FLGS right now. So how can we arrange to get this for the free RPG day...etc.
Typically, I think your FLGS has to register with the Free RPG Day people first. Then, they get a shipment of whatever products the publishers provided for it...including Paizo's adventure.
Yes, and we send the kits out two weeks in advance to the stores for two reasons:
1) The below! (so GMs can get early to prep)
2) Just to make sure everyone gets theirs in time.
Best,
Aldo
Last year I coordinated with my FLGS to run a demo using the Bonus Bestiary on Free-RPG Day, and they got me a copy of the book early so I had a chance to look it over and prepare. Sadly, mine was the only demo people were running and no one wanted to stick around to play it. They just got their free swag and left. But my suggestion would be to talk to your FLGS as soon as possible, see if they can start posting notices about the game that'll be run that day and also see if they'll get you a copy to prep with as soon as they receive their shipment.
Yes. It has a chronicle sheet on the last page. Keep in mind that only brand new level 1 PCs can play this adventure--it's our first Tier 1 adventure (no sub-Tiers).
Will there be plenty of copies of this module for sale or do we need to be on the Paizo site at 12:01am to get one?
There should be plenty here on paizo.com. Every year, we print the same amount to sell here on the site and only the first year's "Hollow's Last Hope" has sold out. We still have "Revenge of the Kobold King" from two years ago and of course the "Bonus Bestiary" from last year. So I wouldn't worry if you aren't here at 12:01 am. :)

I like that it will "serve as an introduction to the Pathfinder Society Organized Play" though I'm curious how that will work.
It will function as a Tier 1 scenario, meaning it's only for beginning 1st level PCs and has no level range. The back inside cover is a chronicle sheet and anyone who plays through it can use that chronicle sheet to get their character in Pathfinder Society started. This allows us to effectively run Pathfinder Society events at every Free RPG Day store and gives us an introductory adventure for Pathfinder Society that can be downloaded for free and played anywhere.
It won't have faction missions or prestige award, though it will have the typical +1 XP and purchasable items off the chronicle sheet. Once the adventure is successfully completed, there's an option to join the Society as both a character and a player and if you do so, that's when you make all of the appropriate choices for your official character.
Hey Josh, I will be running this at the Local Game Shop here on Free RPG day, Quick question, Can I apply this 1XP to a first level character of mine as GM credit?
If I want to run this for some family and friends (a sort of "family con", basically an extended home game) do I need to register as a GM beforehand? Or can I join "on the fly" like players can? (As it sounds like above.)
To be clear, you don't need to register as a GM. If you want to sign up for a Pathfinder Society ID # before you run the session, you can. If you want to run the session and then later decide to report it, you'll need a Pathfinder Society ID # in order to create the event and report it and your players will need Society ID #s in order to be part of the reporting.
Please note that thought the FREE PDF will automatically become available at midnight Pacific Time on Monday, the print edition will not be available to order until later in the day (probably sometime before noon).

Josh I am helping a friend make a character for this module right now. As this is an introductory scenario I am not having him pick a faction, but my question is should I have him pick traits or wait until the character joins the society after the adventure and then let him pick 2 traits?

I'm kind of dissapointed that the glowing bits for the Oracle( gem in scepter and "mystic writing" ) are blue instead of fiery looking. She is an Oracle of Flame after all... :( Other than that the cover looks awesome!

Picked mine up this morning. looks very cool so far. Erik if you see this Burrell and the big guy (I think his name is Chad) at the Source say hi back.
So the PDF for this is available for free tomorrow?
I hope I haven't missed out....
Yes, it is. That's how they always do it, right?
My FLGS was participating. They'd planned to save all the goodies as prizes for those playing in their tournament, but I convinced them to give me a copy of Master of the Fallen Fortress for being a good customer.
So the PDF for this is available for free tomorrow?
I hope I haven't missed out....
Typically it will be the next day or the next. Plus often they will sell some hard copies that they saved as well. Least they did last year. But the PDF will always be there and free so you haven't missed out.
