Most adventurers think of cities as the places to go after the adventure is over. It’s time to show your players that cities can be every bit as exciting—and dangerous—as the darkest dungeon!

Each city presented in this 64-page book comes complete with a full-page color map, history both ancient and modern, relations with neighboring nations and monsters, noteworthy locations, and pages of adventure hooks, making it the perfect place to run a Pathfinder campaign!

    Cities in this book include:
  • Cassomir, home of Taldor’s aggressive navy and strange creatures that lurk beneath the streets
  • Corentyn, the crumbling, haunted city that gives devil-worshiping Cheliax a chokehold on trade through the Inner Sea
  • Ilizmagorti, a haven for pirates and secret base of the mysterious Red Mantis assassins
  • Nisroch, gloomy port city of shadow and bone, ruled by priests of the sadistic god Zon-Kuthon
  • Vigil, a bastion of law and good on the border of civilization, built to watch over the tomb of an ancient lich
  • Whitethrone, capital city and noble playground of the daughters of the witch queen Baba Yaga

Every city described in this book also appears as a huge poster map in Pathfinder Chronicles: City Map Folio.

A useful Suppliment for both DM and Player

4/5

Cities of Golarion detail six far flung cities like Whitethone and Ilizmagorti. They add richness and complexity to those kingdoms where they lie, and give players somewhere to be from. Check out my full review: Cities of Golarion

An excellent resource for the Golarion setting

4/5

This book does a very good job of fleshing out several cities in the Pathfinder campaign setting, and many of these cities also serve to give some additional flavor to the nations that they are associated with.

The coverage of Cassomir is a perfect compliment to the Taldor: Echoes of Glory product, and immediately, perhaps more than any of the other cities, this one stands out in the product as being the best base for a "standard" adventuring party.

On the other side of the coin, Nisroch doesn't seem like a place well suited for much except a destination for an adventure where the adventurers are quick to exit the scene once their mission is done.

It doesn't run at maximum awesome. Corentyn is fine, but doesn't seem especially well suited for being called out in a product like this, as an example.

Still, none of the write ups are bad, and the product as a whole is very solid.

Cities for urban campaigns

4/5

The book presents 6 new cities in the Pathfinder campaign setting, devised for running urban campaigns. I guess you can use them for a part of your game, or center a whole campaign in them. Either way, the information is very useful and the writing is inspiring, so it's a very enjoyable read. I personally like to pick and chose, here and there, buildings, NPCs and plots, to enhance the flavor of my own cities. However, I rated 4 stars, because I think there should be at least some more good-oriented cities, and a little less complexity throughout the book. Maybe a "Towns of Golarion" would complement these aspects. It is overall an excelent buy, especially if you're interested in running urban campaigns or urban-adventures.

A nice sourcebook

4/5

Each city is unique and leaves a DM with a detailed descriptions yet still allows some room for any personal touches desired to fit a specific campaign. The cities are unique and each has a different flair. Finally, we get to see a glimpse into the dark nations of Nidal and Irrisen via a couple of the cities. Great stuff!

Mairkurion gets a point! Tell your mama she did something right raising ya.

While I can see Sean's point, to be clear for all parties - and as I've stated elsewhere - I know we all take our gaming seriously and put extra weight on our new products, but don't take one piece of art, one map, one sentence, or one word in any of our products as being signs of sweeping, multi-line changes. We tend to be quite noisy about those and anyone on these boards will know about it before their subscriptions get to them. We hope you like all the maps in Cities of Golarion - but up front - you might not like them all, it's a subjective thing but we do what we can and we think we have something pretty cool in store.

Also, just a reminder, we've got some nice message boards here which we all like posting to. If you want to be snippy or vent because you had a bad days, your cat yelled at you, or 'cause you don't like Sean's haircut, there are other forums for that - elsewhere. I personally have a stuffed Cthulhu in beachcomber gear that I do most of my yelling and tiradeing at.

The Exchange

Even if I were not planning on running adventures set in Golarion (which I am) I'd still want and buy a product like this (and the Map Folio that's accompanying it) as you can never have enough well detailed cities and they can be easily used in any campaign world. If this does well, here's hoping for another such product down the line, Castles of Golarion perhaps? I still get good use of my City, Castle and Country sites books from 2nd edition D&D and they aren't half as good as what this product sounds like its going to be.

Argh, I wish they would've included a city from either Numeria or Ustalav; those are the two countries I'm most interested in learning about. Fortunately, Irrisen would have been my third pick. I really hope we get some info on Baba Yaga, and that the author does justice to such a vibrant and fascinating character.

Here is a sterling example of customer service.

Please don't let this book slip any further, if you can help it. :)

I planned a lot of stuff around having this book in September, and when it moved to October I had to add filler. Now that it has moved to November I'll stall further, but I humbly request that it ship no later than this, if you can manage it.

Two consecutive references to embarrassing early 90's "rappers" seems to have done the trick. I'm surprised no one went for a Marky Mark reference, but you can't win 'em all. Maybe next time.

It's (once again) a very good cover! :)

Where do you find these guys and gals?

I mean, Paizo has constantly employed very talented artists who I've never heard of, even though I thought I knew something about the "scene". What's even more amazing to me is that 99% of the time they really "nail" it, even if they hadn't done anything for Paizo before (which, I guess, speaks volumes of the quality of art direction, too).

Another great city map from Paizo, masterfully executed by Rob! :)

Am I mistaken, or did I once see something to the effect of how inside the city of Whitethrone there's a magical effect that allows worgs and winter wolves to walk around as humans?

Because if not, then I now have a perfectly horrid idea about a visitor falling in love with a local woman (and vice-versa). They leave the city, and when he turns to kiss his lady-love...

He finds himself embracing a giant white wolfess. Possibly one who's batting her eyes at him, wagging her tail, and making little "Wuff!" noises at him...

This is certainly a well-made product that is fun to read. I wonder, though, what is the motivation to publish background on exactly these cities?

As far as I can tell, these cities haven't had any fluff to them before, they are not connected to any adventures, and none of them stood out or lended themselves especially to this treatment before. Thus, the selection, and in consequence the whole product, seems somewhat arbitrary to me at this time, and I'd like to learn more about the reasons for how this came to be.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying this is not an excellent sourcebook, I'm just wondering where this comes from.

I should think all of these points are actually excellent reasons to pick exactly those cities. As a DM I find that the published adventures contain enough background to get me through that adventure, and over the course of an AP a city is filled in very well. This product gives me entire cities to use in my own campaign without a lot of prep work. That alone is worth buying.

I think that is the entire point. All of the cities involved in AP's have been fleshed out somewhat. This book helps fill out some of the other parts of Golarion. It certainly helps if you are using Golarion as the setting and need some other cities to use in your plot. Very useful tool for GM's. The book itself is what you'd expect, which is a good thing!

I'd buy another of these if they made one. If I had my way, I would actually like the next one to consist of only 4 or 5 cities instead of 6, and in its place add more artwork to show the architecture and feel of each city, as well as highlighting a major building in each city with floor plan and all. But, that's just me being picky.

The cities do all seem to fill different niches; Cassomir is a civilised old empire city, Corentyn is your collapsing city of aincient importance, Ilizmagorti is your home of shadowy intrigue, Nisroch your dark, controlled place, Vigil your fortress community, and Whitethrone your otherworldy magic place.

They're als different to the cities done in detail previously - Korvosa is a contained city state, Katapesh is your standard middle eastern trade city, Absalom is very much a 'city at the centre of the world' etc...

The main reason we did this book was to provide six different adventure sites for Golarion. Not everything we do has to be linked to the current Adventure Path, after all... and sometimes its nice and interesting to be able to look at a part of the world we may NEVER set an adventure in.

In other cases, it's handy to get the design work done for a location that we know in a year or two that we'll need something done, and having it done EARLY lets us, say, give the author a strong starting point to set their work in.

And also... we want to do books we're interested in. We like cities, and wanted to see six of them worked up as locations.

Hey, I like Dungeonscape! It had tons of classic dungeon weirdness like acid sharks and oddball 'themes'.

No, Dungeonscape is cool, Acidborn Sharks ftw.

I meant Dungeon Survival Guide , which was one of the most atrocious d20 products ever. The reviews on Amazon speak for themselves, the book gets one star on average.
