When a company doesn't do their job, fans are there to do it for them, and if the company is as many companies are, they'll slap you across the wrists for trying to take their IP and making it into something they aren't making money off of.

Maybe the board game industry is not as garbage as the video game industry.

I've run this type of special event at several PaizoCons in the past, using various custom scenarios/cards/etc. Paizo is well aware that I am doing this (see the CTO commenting above), and know that I'm not going to try to distribute anything without their permission, and definitely will not be making any money from it. In fact, they've let me write up several blogs about my creations in the past, and do the same for other fan creations.

There is no implication, at all, from me making content like this that Paizo isn't "doing their jobs".

But yes, in general, I've found that the board game industry is generally full of excellent people who are just trying to make people happy while making a living. :)

I just thought I'd try to drum up a little bit of hype for an event that I'll be running at PaizoCon this year... I have designed a full base-set-size project which ports the world of Starfinder over to a modified version of the mechanics of the Pathfinder Adventure Card Game.

A few new mechanics and other fun things that this will show off:

-Archetypes: Instead of roles, each character will get to choose from a large array of character archetypes. These archetypes are not character-specific, so you can choose any of them for your character after finishing the first adventure (though of course, some are better than others for any given character!)

-Ships: A heavily modified version of the ships mechanic from the Skull & Shackles base set, allowing for Interstellar travel and ship-to-ship combat.

-Systems: A new grouping for locations, based on the concept of a planet or set of planetoids, which introduce one or more powers that apply to all locations within the system. You treat characters in another System as if they didn't exist for most powers... unless you use a boon with the Interstellar trait.

-Empowering checks: No longer will you be using a blessing on a spellcaster's Strength check to grant them a measly d4. Now, when you play a card that empowers a check, you add YOUR character's "Empower die" to the roll.

-7 brand-new characters representing some fan-favorite classes in Starfinder: Envoy, Soldier, Technomancer, Operative, Witchwarper, Biohacker and Solarian!

-Four full adventures based on the Dead Suns adventure path.

-Skittermanders. Nuff said. Oh, and Stridermanders too! :-D

Lots of other new mechanical changes, and LOTS of fun new enemies and boons to discover!

I've submitted two sessions that take up two slots each, which will cover the four adventures of my Starfinder Adventure Card Game conceptual test that I've designed over the past year. I've created over 500 cards, 7 characters, and several new mechanics including archetypes, ship-to-ship combat, Systems that different locations can lie within, and slotted boons. Very excited to run it for people!

Base rules wrote:

The Base cannot be closed while it has cards in it, and it does not count as a location when counting locations, shuffling cards into locations, or determining if villains can escape to it. If all other locations are closed, or the Base has neither cards in it nor characters at it, the Base closes automatically. (A simplified version of these rules appears on the Base as a reminder; these are the complete rules.)

The bolded part, to me, very much guarantees that you will never include the Base when you are determining a random location. This is because, in order to determine a random location, you inherently have to count how many locations there are.

Think about it... how do you determine a random location? At every table I've played at, it involves counting the number of locations and then rolling a die.... if there are 6 locations, you roll 1d6. So, if any power tells you to "do X to a random location", you should NOT be including the Base, since it's never counted (literally it isn't part of any COUNT). If there are 7 locations, and the Base is one of them, you should roll 1d6 and not include the Base in that roll.

Seems infinitely clear to me, both from intent AND rules as written.

For this one, I'd like to suggest that a special rule for Season of the RIghteous be created. Something like this:

When playing any scenario during Season of the Righteous, you gain temporary bonuses to your skills corresponding to each medal you earned on the troop Knights of Kenabres.

Or something like that. SotRighteous characters really REALLY need those bonuses, I think.

I think I'm understanding a bit more what you are trying to get at, though I still don't agree that the name itself is inherently an issue. I'm fully expecting that the Investigator, for example, will be VERY different than what they gave us in 1e, because that was just a combination of two of their other classes.

However, if Paizo wants to expand the idea of a Swashbuckler when they make a new class called that, that's entirely their perogative... Wizards did it with the Warlock, for example. Warlock, by real-world definition, is a specifically-male-gendered witch or sorcerer or other spellcaster... but the Warlock in DnD is a very specific concept that has nothing to do with the classic idea of a witch.

Speaking of, though... OH MAN I can't wait for the Witch and Oracle! :-D

Hadn't thought of that, but that could be one of Swashbuckler's paths.
Maybe hand crossbows and such too. I mean, Gunslinger doesn't really need a whole class centered on one weapon group, does it? People already have guessed it'd just be an archetype. And Grit & Panache were so similar.

Which now makes me wonder about the introduction of the Investigator too, which shared a similar pool.
Maybe what we're getting is two martial classes with a new non-magic focus pool to draw upon? Because really, do we need an Investigator when we have Rogues & Alchemists & MCDs?

Now I'm thinking Witch & Oracle will share a new mechanic too, like reusable hexes/curses/oracle powers (in the same combat, not just after a 10 minute Refocus). Similar to a Shaman perhaps.
That'd be quite tidy of Paizo; two sets of two classes that share a new mechanic.

This is exactly what I was thinking. Swashbuckler could subsume Gunslinger and gain a focus-based pool of options that are very different than anything a current Fighter or Monk could pull off.

Personally, I'm hoping Investigator doesn't have anything to do with alchemy, or at most maybe a class feat or two that gives you some alchemy options. It never made sense to me that Investigators had to also be pseudo-alchemists.

If you don’t like what someone’s posting about, no one made you enter the thread and jumping in to tell everyone basically what amounts to “shut up” is probably the most off topic thing you can do.

So if they read and still said that, it doesn’t make it any better, it’s actually worse IMO.

I'm gonna let this all go now, cuz it's not worth a flame-war, but I do have to say that I was in no way belittling you. I'm simply trying to remind people that Paizo has delivered good content for us in the past, and I am pretty confident that they'll deliver something excellent here as well. This idea that one class necessarily has to step on another because they have some overlap in the way they can be played is, in my opinion, a fallacy. If that was the case, Champions shouldn't have lay on hands, because Clerics are supposed to be our only healers... and why do Sorcerers even exist?!?! They just do what the other four spellcasting classes do!!!

More classes equals more options, and more options are a good thing. There might be a whole bunch of players who want to play a swashbuckling-style character and just aren't satisfied that the Fighter delivers on that. This class is probably going to be for them. It might not be for you, and that's okay. Why does it have to be all or nothing?

EDIT: Also, try to remember that you started this thread with the words "I'm an overly critical person." That is inviting people who think that criticism might be invalid to TELL YOU SO. :)

Silver Crusade RPG Superstar 2014 Top 16

No I definitely read the thread, and nothing said in the thread negates the fact that we have no idea what the class is actually going to be. I just don't think that the CONCEPT of swashbuckler as a class warrants a debate on the fighter. They might honestly be so different that there is no comparison that can be made. We just don't know.

It always amazes me how people on these forums seem to be able to predict the future, because we have NO clue yet what the Swashbuckler will actually look like. Wait for the playtest. The consensus based on what was announced at GenCon is that the Advanced Players Guide (new classes playtest beginning in October of this year and releasing next November, I believe) will contain these heritages, and that they will be available to multiple different races.

I think this is begging to be an archetype that has some requirements to enter. I'm thinking something like this:

Shadowdancer Dedication (Feat 4)
Prerequisites: Sneak Attack class feature, Dexterity 16
You've studied the art of the shadowdancer, and are able to use shadows to hide yourself entirely.
As long as there is a shadow being cast in your square or you are in an area of dim light, you may use the Hide action to become hidden to creatures that could otherwise see you. In addition, if you did not already have darkvision, you gain darkvision.
<Insert part about needing 2 dedication feats before you can take another blah blah>

Shadow Magic (Feat 6)
Prerequisites: Shadowdancer Dedication
Your connection to the shadow plane grants you some supernatural abilities. You gain the focus spell silend image. If you don’t already have one, you gain a focus pool of 1 Focus Point, which you can Refocus by hiding within a shadow and meditating on your connection to the shadow plane for 10 minutes.

Shadow Companion (Feat 6)
Prerequisites: Shadowdancer Dedication
You are able to conjure up a helpful shadow from the shadow plane. You gain a Shadow Companion, which you can summon from the shadow plane using 1 focus point. Use the statistics for an Ambusher animal companion of your choice, with the following modifications: The companion loses the Animal trait and gains the Undead trait. When reduced to 0 hit points, instead of being destroyed, your shadow companion is returned to the shadow plane and cannot be summoned again for 24 hours. Your shadow companion may hide itself in any shadow in its square or within an area of dim light, even if it's currently observed.

Shadow Jump (Feat 6)
Requirements: Shadowdancer Dedication
Not only can you hide within shadows, but you can use the shadow plane to travel short distances. As an <insert 2 action symbol>, you may spend a focus point to cast dimension door. You must begin and end your movement with the spell in an area of shadow, otherwise the spell fails.

Slippery Mind (Feat 8)
Prerequisites: Shadowdancer Dedication
Your mind is partially in the shadow plane, giving you a modicum of protection against mind-affecting spells. When you fail a Will save against a mind spell, you may attempt another Will save 1 round later at the same DC to end that spell's effect on you. You only get one extra chance to save against the effect.

Shadow Power (Feat 10)
Prerequisites: Shadowdancer Dedication, Shadow Magic
Your connection to the shadow plane can manifest itself in the form of raw, destructive shadowy power. As an <insert 2 action symbol>, you may spend a focus point to cast shadow blast, heightened to a spell level equal to 1/2 your level.

Shadow Master (Feat 12)
Prerequisites: Shadowdancer Dedication, Shadow Jump
You're infused with shadow, and when in darkened places, this makes you more resiliant. While in areas of dim light or shadow, you gain resistance equal to 3 + your Charisma modifier to physical damage and to Cold.

This would allow either a base Rogue, OR any class that multiclasses with Rogue, to qualify for the archetype. I think it pretty faithfully represents the 1E version. :)

That's very true. In this case, one scenario of Dragon's Demand (which is procedurally generated) can be played at any tier any number of times by a single character, so you could THEORETICALLY play an entire 6 tiers worth of just randomized scenarios using it (by adding in the cards from another Adventure Path each time). Doesn't appeal to me, but it might appeal to others!

!. You just keep going (my group on Saturday had to re-try scenario B twice because we ran out of time, since you only get 30 cards in the hourglass for the whole thing!)

2. The numbering is correct because the final one, listed with a "1", is meant to be the location all the way to the right. BUT! You don't need to close ANY locations to win! "When the proxy is displayed at the leftmost location, you win." and the proxy moves to the rightmost OCCUPIED location every turn.
You simply need to move to the far-right location, then find the Longshanks, then get all of the characters all the way to the far-left location. My group found this out the hard way, because we were trying to close the first location on both of our first two tries, which slowed us down too much. It's MUCH easier to just run as fas as you can (using the move-when-you-defeat-or-acquire power) to the end, then back to the beginning.

Hello again everyone! I just wanted to remind you that Signups for Cards Against Gnomanity are going on, and we still have a bunch of seats available.

Specifically, we have a bunch of seats open in sanctioned Curse of the Crimson Throne, We Be Heroes?, and Fangwood Thieves tables. Tables of The Dragon's Demand sanctioned play are close to full, so if we need to convert another table to that adventure, we'll do so.

We are now no longer restricting the number of tables you can sign up for. You can sign up for as many tables as you want, with the sole restriction that we would prefer you NOT sign up for multiple tables of the SAME adventure. At the end of this week, we'll be examining the current signups to consider merging some tables if they do not fill up.

Cards Against Gnomanity II runs from June 21st through July 21st. If you're interested in trying out Pathfinder Adventure Card Society through play-by-post, OR if you want to play in the We Be Heroes module for the Pathfinder RPG Playtest, come sign up now!

Looking forward to playing with all of you!!

Excited for this event. But looking at the sign up sheet I can't figure out what tier range the various tables are for. Do the different colors mean something important? One of the tables is marked "legendary" but I'm not sure what that means. Lastly, some of the tables are listed as "PACS rules/sanctioned" but some are not - does that mean that the ones that are not labeled as such don't count for PACS advancement? Thanks in advance for any guidance you can provide!

Good questions, Abraham!

The different colors simply signify which adventure is being run, to differentiate the tables visually.

All of the tables will be Tier 1 (meaning you can play a Tier 1 or Tier 2 character), as almost all of these adventures are available for the very first time during this event (the exceptions to that are the four tables at the bottom of adventures from previous seasons, but those will also be starting at Tier 1 as well).

The Legendary table means that those players are signing up to play on Legendary difficulty, which is a new type of difficulty adjustment that PACS has available to it now. There are three levels of difficulty in PACS under the new Core rules: Normal, Heroic, and Legendary. Normal is just as you'd expect, run the scenario exactly as written. Heroic adds two "wildcards" which are additional random powers that generally increase the difficulty of the scenario. Legendary adds THREE of these wildcards, as well as increasing the effective level of Veteran banes by 1 and adding banes of 1 higher tier to the locations as well.

Those tables marked as "Sanctioned" are so-marked because those adventures were not directly written for PACS, but have been made available as PACS-appropriate content (thus "sanctioned"). The adventures that do NOT say "sanctioned" were already written with the express intent of being used for PACS, so those count for PACS advancement inherently. So, every table we are running counts for advancement! :)

Thanks again, and please feel free to ask more questions!
