dear selene:

welcome, congrats, and warm fuzzies!

glad you made it here, and i'm sure this is one of the right places for you to be (judging by own experience here, but everybody's kind and supportive whatever issues one may be dealing with, whether life-shaping in scale or tiny day-to-day stuff).

even those of us (like me) who aren't "on your team" are definitely "on your side;" welcome again, and glad to see you.

RadiantSophia, "light of wisdom," take heart and linger longer, for it is in dark times we most need your illumination.

not saying the siren song of oblivion isn't tempting... i listen to it myself on occasion... so far, my stubbornness drags me away, because life is sweet and finite. and because i still haven't shed my fear of dying.

endings come eventually, i feel, with no need to hurry things

i hope for hope for you

yikes

the current bonfire of the verities going on has kinda dropped into a surreal background buzz, overshadowed by my granddad being in hospital after collapsing in his bedroom...

i want to thank all of you for your work towards correcting our nation's course; it helps me to compartmentalize the chaos in my personal life.

and in the tradition of the grappelmeister,

so glad you're all here

Uh, my game only meets twice a month, like clockwork -- dependable, Gnome-designed, Dwarf-built clockwork -- so I don't get enough of great teamwork, clever PCs, and flexible, well-prepared GM?

(I know, but I had to come up with SOMETHING to air; all the cool kids are posting here.)

Felicitous fortune favor thee, Iammars.

(Rennaivx, purses are entirely awesome. These days I just use a backpack for day to day, but for going out in non-gaming pursuits is better suited to a purse.)

Heh. My current group all use laptops, except for me; I've kept to pencil and paper, because a folder with several sheets of paper (character sheet+scratch paper) is SO much easier to haul around and set up, imo.

My best player (and the one who's been with me the longest - 30 years) is thinking of "retiring" from gaming once the current campaign we're running ends. His goal is to reach 20th level. Right now he's close to 14th with 3 Mythic Tiers. I'd hate to lose him after so many years, so I hope he changes his mind when that time comes.

...quick, slow down the experience flow!

So, in my current game, I'm "That Guy;" the one who blew his first significant haul of loot buying a wagon and supplies to fill said wagon. Multiple tents, bedrolls, mess kits (a cooking kit), a shovel, a pick, a crowbar, a hatchet, a saw...

Y'know, enough gear to outfit the whole group with those often-forgotten items, plus a buttload (an Imperial Buttload, mind you, none of these newfangled Metric Buttloads) of personal gear.

Now I'm waiting for us to leave town, so I can surprise everyone with how well-outfitted we all are...

Rhetorical Romance

Hypothetically -- I mean,
Like if I had one, just,
Around; y'know,
Another love letter?

So, if I did -- have one
--Would you read it?
Would you want to see it?
Or rather not
Be vexed with these
Extraneous complexities?

Would you become complicit
Reading prose that waxed explicit?
Could more daring words elicit
Some echo of felicities...
Or would it be
Just a tease,
And leave you more uneasy?

Not to mention that the Thief was the only character that could do things like open locks, disable tracks, and move silently. If your cleric wanted to walk past a senty,.... forget it.

Hey, you're forgetting the original Assassin.

Mind you, Thieves were WAY better at it, but Assassins COULD do it.

PS: Any group that has me in it has a grognard. Sigh.

I haven't been in a PFS game for a while (not since I moved from Alaska), but I still haunt the boards a bit...

My two coppers; I'm much more concerned with survival than spotlight, so my response to folks whose build lets them crush the opposition was "awesome, THAT'S dead, and I didn't use any ammo." Obviously, not everyone shares my laid-back approach...

Off-topic; I found a group to play Pathfinder with!

Much better fit than the batch of teenagers playing 5E that was the last open group I tried... we got more done in two and a half hours than the two four-hour sessions I endured before giving up.

So, woot! Have been jonesing for a game so badly that I'd've joined a game of Paranoia...

I've been lucky with my gaming groups: nobody has ever cared one way or the other about the gender and/or orientation of the characters I've run. I usually run gay males, because I'm one; on occasion I've run (straight) women and a couple of times -- to mix it up and confuse my fellow-players -- straight men.

Anyway, the groups I've been in haven't really batted an eye in any of these cases; honestly, we're not really concerned with the romantic aspects -- PCs might pair off, otherwise it's a mention of seeking professional company in downtime, and no-one cares with whom.

So, this Christmas is a mixed bag; I just moved away from my home in Anchorage to Salem Oregon. On the plus side, that means I have family I haven't seen in years around me for this holiday season. On the other hand, the friends I love and depend upon are a thousand miles away, including the guy I love with all my heart. So, of two minds/hearts about it all. Having an outbreak of poetry in attempt to manage all the emotional freight.

Quitting Smoking and Orbital Mechanics with a Dash of Last Unicorn

Because, you.

I want to live long
For the longer I linger,
Malingering
In orbit around
Your binary system;
A rogue planetoid
Or maybe -- if I'm graceful
-- a rogue moon
The more likely
(Thinks I)
I may savor
All the old memories
Of you
Made new again.

You make me new,
Like king Haggard and the sea
(full of trapped unicorns).

Ikagi, I know
The metaphors are mixed;
The impulse is sure.
For sure,
I love you more
Than those damn cigarettes.

When once more
Into the breach,
I want to wrap you
In that fuzzy, silver-grey
Roll blanket
And carry the smell of you away
When our orbits drift apart...
Until the next time
Perigee tilts in our favor
And we weave our paths again.

This is just my two cents. I'm hardly a prude but I don't think playing evil characters is such a great thing. While individual groups can knock themselves out, I don't like that Paizo sponsors this and I definitely to not support it. Maybe it's okay for third party companies because there is a niche out there for this, I'm just disappointed that Paizo jumped on the bandwagon. I don't propose censorship or think that the game shouldn't have adult themes. I just think that the name sake company should draw a line somewhere. It won't stop me from buying future products or supporting the company. Just throwing something out there to think about.

Don't like evil characters? Don't play one. That simple.

Don't support evil supplements? Don't buy one. That simple.

Whining about a supplement defining evil? That's simple (to say the least).

I've had a couple of DMs let me utilize the nastiness within this tome; haven't had enough time-in-campaign to actually build a pain farm.

If you're clever, you can use quite a lot of it without bringing the smiting of herodom down on your head... impatience seems to be the hallmark of lots of evil folk, though, so ymmv.

It isn't for everybody; when I refer to it as "nastiness," well... it is. Some groups won't want to explore the verges of Really Evil Stuff. A couple of groups I've played with did, and we had a blast.

Humm, GURPS has a lot of nonfantasy application; they ALMOST live up to their system name (Generic Universal Role Playing System). They have several Traveler supplements, as well as a few general sci-fi settings, from intrasolar to interstellar scope. NB: the point-based system is very different from the class-and-level progression of PF/D&D; the bulk of PCs abilities are set during construction, with rather slow (by comparison) advancement. Oh, and also, VERY IMPORTANT! Their 3rd edition rocks greatly; the newest, 4th edition, kind of sucks (imo).

The old ICE game, Spacemaster, is also fun -- though it seems they've removed the starship construction rules (my favorite part) from the game (sadly). This system is also quite different from PF/D&D, but has classes and level progression, so it'd be at least more familiar.

I'm also fond of both Aeon and Aberrant, a pair of offerings from White Wolf.

Hope this helps! Have fun.

I dunno; I've been playing various rpgs for >ahem< more years than I care to admit, with a variety of different groups, different age-range in said groups, etc.

I think that, on the whole, there has been a trend to increasing customizability -- which tends to increase player agency, imo -- in the bulk of game systems across the board. Whether it's the (growing) pool of feats available in Pathfinder, or the various Background/Merit options in World of Darkness (don't get me started on Exalted backgrounds!) or the Aspect system out of Fate games (like Dresden Files) wherein if you want a mysterious haunted house to live in, you can write it into the story as one of your character's Aspects.

I don't think the distinction between "old school" and "new school" is a real dichotomy. It's unfortunate that people are flinging those titles back and forth as shorthand for "ur doin' it wrong," on both sides of this (illusory) divide.

Then again, I've been pretty fortunate in my gaming groups, with GMs who are (mostly) enthusiastic when players come up with fun, novel additions to their gameworld, and players who are (usually) pretty mellow about accepting the basic framework set forth by the GM... I don't think we're really set on the spectrum between old and new school play; it depends on what game we're playing.

So, anybody who remembers the Chronicles of Narnis (the books, not that execrable series of movies) may recall Aslan's discussion with the Calormen noble, Emeth [this out of The Last Battle]. Summing up, the great lion explains that if a man makes an oath to Tash (the evil/bad/wrong deity of the Calormen empire) and keeps the oath for the oath's sake, it is really an oath to [me] Aslan. Likewise, if a man does evil in the name of Aslan, he is truly serving Tash.

I bring this up here because I'm pretty sure I've failed to act in accordance with my preferred/professed alignment; while I may well be abrasive and sarcastic, and dedicated to getting my own way, I don't think I've been successfully tyrranical. Rather than Lawful/Evil, I think I fall into Neutral with Lawful tendencies. Being a jerk doesn't actually qualify one for evil...

Hi again, everyone.

So, having been without computer and internet access for -- uh, I think -- two yearsish, I had no idea what my old password was (or even which e-mail I'd used) so I just made a new account.

If you remember Alitan, you remember me; if you don't, no big deal.

But anyway, back in the digital world again; glad to be back here.
