Starfinder Society Survey: The Adamantine Bastille

Thursday, August 25, 2022

Hello Starfinders!

As you may have heard, our esteemed First Seeker Ehu Hadif has organized the closure of the Adamantine Bastille, a private prison beneath the Starfinder Society’s Lorespire Complex. Now the First Seeker wants to hear from you! How should this space be repurposed? The choice is yours!

Visit paizo.com/adamantine to cast your vote in a short survey! Whether you’re a longtime participant in Starfinder Society Organized Play or a newcomer, this survey is open to all! Click the link and tell us how you want the Society to use the space! The survey also offers a chance for you to share what storylines, locations, and organizations you’d like to see the Starfinder Society feature in future adventures! This survey will remain open until the end of 2022.

First Seeker Ehu Hadif, a tall kasatha, contemplates the future

I'm not above politicking by posting my two cents here on the forums too!

Quote:

What part of the Starfinder Campaign setting would you like to see us introduce into Starfinder Society Scenarios that you haven't seen yet?

This could include specific planets, planes, species, NPCs, and/or organizations.

I put the following:

I'd like to see fully automated intergalactic gay space communism. If this is not possible I would like to attack and dethrone Abadar.

You were not my first guess for who submitted this, but you were on my list.

I started to fill this out but then put it down because I realized that the answers I wanted to give were just... a lot more questions.

I'll leave it to folks who are actually engaged with the OrgPlay program.

BTW, I might as well use this opportunity to ask (since it didn't really fit survey):

so are those:
"immortal" jinsul warlords now dead or alive floating in space after spacehip they were strapped on exploded?

I think we never got answer on that so I'm curious about that :p

I decided not to answer the survey because, honestly, I kinda feel like it's not my place, but I will use this thread to raise a couple of issues I have that this survey (which, itself, is great to see) raises for me.

Mainly, that after 5+ years of the Starfinder Society, the Lorespire Complex remains an amorphous mass, with features, or lack of features, that just bubble up or melt away as needed. While I do truly understand the motivation to not fully lock down your options, it would be nice if there was an internal baseline to work off in some areas.

Take physical space, for a basic example. While trying to avoid spoilers, one NPC in particular has been involved in setting up headquarters for two separate factions. Recently, a new faction simply moved into a wing of the complex that's been abandoned for years. A few years ago, meanwhile, a major faction had to set up headquarters in a donated space off-campus. And the Lorespire Complex got more crowded between those two events.

And take a look at some of the options for what the Adamantine Bastion should be remodeled into:

1. Immersive cultural museum. The Lorespire Complex has a museum, which has mostly been neglected so far (the First Seeker Ilyastre Memorial Museum has been featured in one scenario). So if the AB becomes a cultural museum, it would be nice to clearly distinguish it from the existing museum (however that's done).

2. Archives. Do we mean additional archives here? How would these be distinguished from the Lorespire Complex's digital archives (The Cortex) or its extensive analog archives, which are called The Archives?

3. Vehicle hangar. The Lorespire Complex already has private docks, which pop up pretty regularly.

4. Secure vault. While this makes solid logical sense for a remodeled supermax prison, the Lorespire Complex already has secure vaults: the Communion Vaults, which already had some conceptual overlap with the AB's A-Block as it was.

5. Weapons testing center. The Lorespire Complex already has "holodeck"-like combat training rooms, so I'd like to see how this would be distinguished from those.

John, I was trying to collect my thoughts and you managed to capture many of them in your post. While we have ten more years of Pathfinder history than Starfinder (so perhaps this understandable) I feel like I have way more information about what a Pathfinder is and does than a Starfinder.

Two recent Pathfinder books should be considered for Starfinder parallel books. I'd love to see Lost Omens Pathfinder Society and City of Absalom cloned by Starfinder as a Starfinder Society book and an Absalom Station book.

This is my issue as well, its truly hard to imagine the Lorespire Complex not having a number of these options already and its weird to me that these features are being put in the giant prison that we also didn't really ever see mentioned much

Oh, I'd snatch up a Field Guide in a minute. Also/or an Absalom Station hardback that included a closer look at the Lorespire Complex.

Yeah, a lot of the poll options I didn't list are features that undoubtedly exist within easy walking distance of the Lorespire Complex as it is.

I can see, for example, a purpose for a vidgame arcade or religious center in the complex, if it's on the scale of say, the rec center on a large college campus and mainly caters to itinerant agents who don't have time to go stretch their legs. But if we look at the Lorespire Complex in its environs (sat comfortably in a diverse, middle-class neighborhood, right next to the upscale downtown and a big college), why remodel a prison to compete with Kemanis' nightlife or Congregation?

Look, any of the choices on that poll can work. I just hope that whatever option is chosen is added with an eye for in-world cultural context. Also, I do enjoy when scenarios add to the local color with off-Complex locations like Seeker's Respite.

Just popping in to answer a few questions:

You'll notice we kept the options in this survey as broad as possible. This was intentional, but yes, it does mean that some options overlap with facilities already in the Lorespire Complex. Rest assured that whatever option is selected, we'll work internally to ensure it's distinct from anything else already in the complex and that it fits in with Absalom Station and our setting.

Would I love a book about the Starfinder Society or Absalom Station? Yes, absolutely! There are no books currently announced on either topic.

As to whether we'll be seeing more detail on other locations in the Lorespire Complex in the coming years? I can assure you that showcasing and utilizing the locations within the Lorespire Complex that already exist is on my radar and matters to me. As to when you can start to see these locations hit gaming tables? Related scenarios are not yet announced.

Thanks all for your participation and thoughtful feedback!

John, you should fill out the survey. I don't care that you're not officially a GM in Organized Play. You have thought more deeply about the lore and story of Starfinder Society than many of the casual players who have also been asked to fill this survey out.

OK, you talked me into it. Realized there are a couple of storylines we haven't seen since Year Two that I'd really like to see picked back up.

ETA: D'oh! I spaced out and didn't mention it in the survey, but I would also like to see the Society continue to explore historical sites amid the Gideron-Marixah War. The Society poked its nose in there twice for personal gains, both times managing to slightly benefit the Authority in the long run. Give the Republic its due!

I really prefer to let the players in those scenarios try to decide, generally with at least 3 reasonable choices.

Sangoro's Bulwark is one of the two storylines I included in my survey. That felt like a really big deal to just stop as it did. Especially after a four-year hiatus, I could see reclaiming that fortress as a major storyline culminating in a multi-table event, not to mention giving the Exo-Guardians a focal "quest."

Yeah I want to know where the SPACE GOBLINS went.

When Starfinder was launched you couldn't climb over the amount of SPACE GOBLIN art etc all over the show, I was legitimately excited. I was wanting to play a SPACE GOBLIN.

Then they just vanished in S1 with no explanation, included in only a small handful of S1 era content - then gone. Instead, we got Skittermanders (who are very much NOT SPACE GOBLINS) and I am still slightly fuming.

Can we get please get playable SPACE GOBLINS (like PF2 got) and a delivery on the implied promise?

Perhaps we will unlock them in Sangoros Bulwark...

Space goblins were the charity auction boon for GenCon 2021. Which means there are only a handful out there and they probably aren't getting unlocked for wider Society play for a while.
