Paizo Recognizes United Paizo Workers

Thursday, October 21, 2021

Paizo, Pathfinder, and Starfinder Logos over-layed over images of the different iconics

Paizo is pleased to announce it has voluntarily recognized the United Paizo Workers union, which is affiliated with the Communications Workers of America (CWA).

“We look forward to working with the union to continue and expand our efforts to make Paizo a better place to work and to ensure that Pathfinder and Starfinder products continue to exceed gamer expectations for many years to come,” said Jeff Alvarez, President of Paizo.

The next steps will involve the United Paizo Workers (UPW) union electing their bargaining representatives and then meeting with Paizo management to negotiate terms for a collective bargaining agreement. We expect this process to take some time, but we are committed to the effort and hope to settle a contract in due course. Until an agreement is reached, the Paizo staff continues to focus on creating amazing Pathfinder and Starfinder products.

Paizo has always been about creating awesome games, and we look forward to the changes that unionization will bring to the company. Please join us on this journey by following the UPW on Twitter and stay tuned for future updates!

Fantastic news.

It is a small yet significant step towards healthier workers in gaming and healthier industries in gaming.

I'm still hoping to hear something tangible from Paizo's management on the various concerns from #PaizoAccountability. That allegations of transphobic policy/practices have not only not been addressed over a month in, but actively talked around in the last official communication we got is unacceptable. While I expect the union to work for the good of all Paizo employees going forward, something must be done about prior harm.

I’m solidly with keftiu on that.

I’ve just placed an order for the books I missed in October, plus some others I’d been eyeing off getting duplicates of. I’m glad Paizo chose to recognise the union and I hope this leads to better dialogue between the workers and executive going forward.

For me, the other significant issue remains historic incidents of transphobia. Although they have been tacitly acknowledged, there has been no formal statement. I am keenly waiting to hear the organisation’s response so that I can resume my support of a company I’ve always respected and their staff I’ve always admired.

Thank you! I’m proud to say now that I can play a union made game. Great job. Congratulations to all Paizo United workers.

Exciting news!

Just remember the union is only the first step. The Paizo execs still haven't addressed the laundry list of allegations against them.

I am happy and impressed by all involved. I am truly surprised by both the formation of the union and the voluntary acceptance of it. Both blow my mind (in a good way). This will be a challenge for all involved and I do have some fears. However, all good things are worth the effort. Fair labor and quality Paizo product are both worth fighting for.

Both labor and management need their space and time to figure this out. I hope that social media and these boards can now give it to them. This is not a quick fix.

Glad to hear this news! I hope that it is a successful venture for both employees and the company!
As another union member in a different industry, please don't follow the same union standards of union seniority controlling its members. There are bad employees everywhere and they should be able to be removed easily, but often times in unions it is very hard to remove them.
Unions have great benefits, but also stupid customs that should be changed.
Good luck on your adventure!

Can’t wait to play it! I hear Part 2 of 6 has some real TPK potential. :)
Edit: I’m just being playful about the TPK. Please don’t read anything into it.

The union and Paizo will now undoubtedly show others in this industry and other industries that unions and companies can work together, develop good product, and have everyone win.

Let's go!

Gonna be getting Guns and Gears, and Grand Bazaar tonight. I was holding off on that until the UPW was recognized.

As for what's next on the consumer side of this:

When Paizo announces that it will accommodate the original demands of the freelancers and commit to improvements on that front then I will get my first subscriptions to the PF2e rulebooks and Lost Omens.

And, if Paizo announces a way to tip all the contributors to each book on their storefront then I will begin the process of going back to each book (I currently own all digital rulebooks and Lost Omens books from the Core Rulebook through Secrets of Magic) and purchasing the hardcopy version as well as the tip option.

Seems like a fishy deal. We'll see how politically driven it actually was.

Amazing news! There's still a lot of work and a lot of uncertainty to come, but this is a major step in the right direction, and a cheering sign that the management is willing to meet us halfway. Congratulations to everyone, staff, freelancers, and fans, who made this happen!

Huzzah!

A union won't magically solve all the problems, but it opens the door for workers and management solving problems together. And partnerships work way better when both partners have power.

I am so happy about this announcement! Huzzah!

Broke the news to my friends. They canceled their subscriptions and pending orders the same day.

Now I don't know if I'm going to get to play Pathfinder anymore.

Huzzah! Well done, Paizo, and congratulations to the UPW! This Union negotiator wishes the yet-to-be-elected bargaining team the best of luck with the next steps! (Personally, I’m fond of the Interest-Based Bargaining approach as a tool, but I’m sure you all have plenty of help from CWA in working out what suits your situation best.)

a) Your friends sure have some interesting opinions! It might pay for you to learn more about what they believe on a variety of topics about the welfare of other human beings, to make sure they are people who are actually going to be good friends. Sometimes you think you know people, and can count on them for anything, then they start posting about how your class of people is inherently worse than theirs (except you, of course! You're "one of the good ones"!)

b) Online works pretty well.

Why did they do this? Because one of the news articles covering the topic mentioned the company's intent to hire a "Diversity Officer." According to them "any company that cares more about getting a 'Diversity Officer' to promote affirmative action over skill, merit, and quality of content (because quality inevitably suffers when a company buys into the woke propaganda) is a company that doesn't deserve their financial patronage." Others said "It's a form of racism, and we don't give our money to people who support that nonsense." They possess the "Go woke go broke" mentality I guess.

Personally, I don't care about company politics (though I think companies should generally steer clear of it) and am waiting to see if the product quality really does plummet before deciding what to do with my own money. I might be forced out of the hobby regardless of my own desires though, since all my friends appear to be abandoning it in mass over these recent messes and the direction the company has been taking as a result.

Congrats everyone on your victory. I do so hope conditions improve for the hardworking staff at Paizo.

As mentioned elsewhere that was a demand of the freelancers, not the union nor Paizo, and has been dropped.

It also isn’t what the requested diversity officer was intended to do.

It was to cover some stuff that’s already happening in house in an ad-hoc way. More akin to a sensitivity reader, as I understood it (although presumably someone who would coordinate such things rather than do all of it themselves).

Mostly due to unreliability. I did it for about three years, and nearly every game was dead inside of a month. The longest was not more than three months.

That's great news (for us). I might be able to get them back on board with that.
