More About Paizo Game Space

The Swallowtail Festival from Rise of the Runelords in full swing! We still don't know who invited the dragon...

At the PaizoCon 2012 banquet, we announced we've been working on Paizo Game Space, a virtual tabletop that runs right in your web browser. We've shown some screenshots, and clarified why we're doing this (hint: it's not to crush our enemies). But now it's been a few months, and the VTT isn't available yet, so we'd like to give you an update on where we are and answer some big questions: "When can I use it?" and "How much will it cost?"

When can I use it?

We're going to be starting public beta testing in the next few weeks. This beta test will be open to anybody who bought a ticket online for PaizoCon 2012. This gives us a reasonably limited group of people to bang on it and break the obvious stuff so we can fix it before opening it up to everybody. Ideally, the beta test will last just a few weeks, but that will depend on what breaks.

How much will it cost?

As we've said before, it'll be free to play. But we'll have ways for you to give us money. Since we're talking about selling access to digital data, pretty much anything is possible, but initially, we're focusing on maps, tokens and adventures.

We've also settled on some basic principles:

  • If you buy it, you keep it. That means no limited number of uses, no monthly fees, no pay-per-play, no rentals. If you buy a token set for Paizo Game Space, you can use those tokens whenever you like. Period. There's no extra charge to use the same token in multiple games. You won't have to pay us again next year to keep using it. And if you buy a campaign and want to run multiple groups through it, you can do that, too.
  • If someone at the table has it, everybody can see it. Rather than make GMs have to purchase everything, we think it's important for players to be able to help out. So if Karzoug is running a campaign, and needs Flip-Mat: Country Inn, Merisiel can just let him use hers.*

So how much does that Flip-Mat cost Merisiel? We're still working out pricing for things like Adventure Paths and token packs, but we can tell you this: Flip-Mats and Map Packs will be just $1.99. And if you already bought the PDF for a Flip-Mat or Map Pack? You can use it in Paizo Game Space, free.

As it just so happens, the main reason why Roll20 has been so successful, is that it has a team of experienced programmers that get along and are being paid (via the donation and ads) to create, maintain, and update the program and its servers.

Obsidian Portal is also notable in this regard - the differences between it and free "campaign manager" programs are stark.

Actually roll20 has been, until recently, one programmer who really understands how to leverage existing web technologies. But yes, kickstarter definitely made it possible to pay for his time.

If testing is going on now, perhaps I missed an invite? I was at paizocon 2012. Also, our plan was to use it with a projector as we all sit around the same table. Hopefully this will work.

We have not rolled out testing to PaizoCon 2012 folks yet. This status update still reflects the current state of things.

oh man, this I did not know. :-( it's even farther behind than I imagined... heh.

sad face.

I'll stop pestering for a shot at play testing at least...

I'll just write supportive, and happy thoughts about how Exited that I am for this to become a reality!!!

I'm so happy and exited for this to become a reality!

What's the anticipated delay, if any, with having VTT related products delivered as part of a new AP rollout? For example, Wrath of the Righteous rolls out, when would we expect to see a WoTR VTT set of AP specific maps, bestiary icons that would integrate in with Game Space?

Also, are there any existing APs that are on the table to be first for any sort of retroactive adoption into Gamespace. My hunch is RoTRL might be one, but just curious.

Good questions! I'd like to know as well.

In fact, Game Space might be a great solution for those of us who want some of the 3.5 AP's re-released with the PFRPG ruleset.

Instead of printing up something that will negatively affect their subscription model down the road, why not make a "Curse of the Crimson Throne" Game Space exclusive?

I'm sure it would take just as long, if not longer to create as a print update. Not only would they need to update everything to PFRPG, but then they would need to port it to the Game Space, which would have all kinds of hiccups.

It's great to hear that this is still moving forward.

Integration of purchased Paizo material into the VTT seems to me to be the big leverage point. The one thing that Paizo has that could other VTT's don't is the rights to the art we want to use. If we could have digital maps and images for tokens from all the pdf documents we had purchased it would make life SOOOO much easier. 90% of current prep time is recreating digital maps and monster tokens.

It also seems to me that if you all want a great beta test group you should get in touch with the PFS online collective group. This group plays Pathfinder Society online utilizing a variety of VTT's (aka your competition) and would probably be one of the key groups using the system. The people their will have a great perspective on what they need at the start vs what they would like to see down the road.

Now we know what the corgi has been up to.

Will GameSpace have any impact on PbP gaming? Honestly, having a bunch of pre-made maps and an easy way to manipulate tokens, make attacks, use spells, etc would be enough to make me a subscriber. I do what I can with Mythweavers, but I use Photoshop for my battlemaps and that just takes a long time.

Agreed.

If you want simple in Maptool, it is as easy as any other tool out there.

Except versioning, port-forwarding, and documentation. Compared to Roll20.net — or indeed probably the future GameSpace — those three hurdles are probably not worth the extra features for 90% of the potential VTT users. Indeed, the list of "missing features" on Roll20 is shrinking almost as fast as they were added to MapTool... and MapTool's stagnated for the past year or so.

Don't mistake me, I love MapTool. But for a multi-user application, installing clients on local machines is a stone age approach.

Actually you are wrong about the Client/Server architecture. This is actually newer technology than putting applications on a server (mainframe) and having multiple users access it through a client (browser / dummy terminal) type architecture. I am personally against the Mainframe/dummy terminal type applications, it is a step backwards in technology in my opinion.

And as far as not installing a client on your local computer is not exactly true. You have to have a browser installed which is a client.

So any further update on this? Last I see is from Vic Wertz, and given the day he posted on I'm not so sure I'd trust the news. ;)

Will this support APs in terms of maps?

According to the previous posts, there will be support for APs.

The last official update for this was back in February. Anything new to report?

I get what you're saying about the history there, but none of that really changes my point.

Running MapTool is a total pain because it is client-server.

I did it for years, and it is otherwise a great program, but the moment something came along with the same features and NO network setup, I left and never looked back.

I have no issue with life/culture/ideas being cyclical. Roll20 is by far the easiest VTT to set up and run. Server side rather than client side is definitely the way to roll with VTT's.

Looks like I haven't posted an update since this one. Mostly that's because the situation is about the same. We're still refactoring and polishing the user experience, and trying to ensure that improvements to Paizo Game Space can be used elsewhere. An example of this is the new paizo.com avatar picker we rolled out today, which has been reworked extensively so it shares underpinnings with the token selector code in the VTT.

Thanks for the update Gary.

Grand Lodge

Thank you Gary! I wasn't sure where to look for this info, thanks for pointing me in the correct direction! So excited for this!

Awesome, Gary. Thanks!

Is there a reasonable chance that a more open beta may start prior to Wrath of the Righteous coming out in August? Obviously the timeline is fluid but I really am chomping at the bit to get my hands on this as a potential remote play solution combined with Skype.

Liberty's Edge

Waiting anxiously for it

Silver Crusade

I cant wait for this, even if they launch it with only a few core features.

Best to take your time! Thank you, as always, for the update!

I hope so too! I'm waiting on GameSpace (or at least a clearer idea of its timeline) to get my old high school group back together via VTT and run them through Runelords. It'd be nice not to have to invest the time learning roll20 or whatever else when I'll probably want to use (or at least seriously consider using) GameSpace when it becomes available.

Dark Archive

indeed, i myself have already planned 3 games to run onces the VTT is out (so i'm dying here waiting!)

Tonight we announced that everyone with a ticket for the PaizoCon banquet now has access to Paizo Game Space. Naturally this includes everyone with a ticket for last year's banquet too. I'll post more details once I'm not on my phone. Most important detail I guess is that we're out of alpha testing and now into beta, and the tech team is excited and nervous to see what happens when several hundred people poke at it.

Is there expected time when people who weren't food for goblin banquets will be able to see it?

Or do we have to eat those with tickets to get them.

Also... My ticket for PaizoCon banquet was eaten by a grue! Really!

Now I just wish Paizo had a mustering site so I could stop the warhorn/ohiopfs/facebook sign ups.

Is there a forum where we can post questions about the beta? (I suspect some of them will be able to be answered by other random folks out there, which is the benefit of the forum.) A quick search hasn't shown me the obvious place, so apologies if I rolled a Nat 1 on my Perception.

Grand Lodge

Yes, I too would like to get people's impressions as they fiddle with the Beta test. ^_^

Having fiddled a (very) little with the beta, I would like to know where I may post the results of my fiddling!

Also - is the gamespace beta the reason why the main site has slowed to such a crawl?

Currently you need to have attended the PaizoCon 2012 or 2013 Preview Banquet to have access to the GameSpace Beta.
