More About Paizo Game Space

The Swallowtail Festival from Rise of the Runelords in full swing! We still don't know who invited the dragon...

At the PaizoCon 2012 banquet, we announced we've been working on Paizo Game Space, a virtual tabletop that runs right in your web browser. We've shown some screenshots, and clarified why we're doing this (hint: it's not to crush our enemies). But now it's been a few months, and the VTT isn't available yet, so we'd like to give you an update on where we are and answer some big questions: "When can I use it?" and "How much will it cost?"

When can I use it?

We're going to be starting public beta testing in the next few weeks. This beta test will be open to anybody who bought a ticket online for PaizoCon 2012. This gives us a reasonably limited group of people to bang on it and break the obvious stuff so we can fix it before opening it up to everybody. Ideally, the beta test will last just a few weeks, but that will depend on what breaks.

How much will it cost?

As we've said before, it'll be free to play. But we'll have ways for you to give us money. Since we're talking about selling access to digital data, pretty much anything is possible, but initially, we're focusing on maps, tokens and adventures.

We've also settled on some basic principles:

  • If you buy it, you keep it. That means no limited number of uses, no monthly fees, no pay-per-play, no rentals. If you buy a token set for Paizo Game Space, you can use those tokens whenever you like. Period. There's no extra charge to use the same token in multiple games. You won't have to pay us again next year to keep using it. And if you buy a campaign and want to run multiple groups through it, you can do that, too.
  • If someone at the table has it, everybody can see it. Rather than make GMs have to purchase everything, we think it's important for players to be able to help out. So if Karzoug is running a campaign, and needs Flip-Mat: Country Inn, Merisiel can just let him use hers.*

So how much does that Flip-Mat cost Merisiel? We're still working out pricing for things like Adventure Paths and token packs, but we can tell you this: Flip-Mats and Map Packs will be just $1.99. And if you already bought the PDF for a Flip-Mat or Map Pack? You can use it in Paizo Game Space, free.

Currently you need to have attended the PaizoCon 2012 or 2013 Preview Banquet to have access to the GameSpace Beta.

Let me revise this to say, you need to have had a ticket on your account from either 2012 or 2013 Preview Banquet. People who bought at the door tickets or bought them in person from another attendee at the convention do not have access.

So I have played around with it for a little and have set out most of the beginners box for monsters and checked out the initiative. All of that works good. I am having trouble getting the fog of war to work. Can't figure out how to uncover a small area. So right now it is on or off lol.

The fog drawing tools are going to be redone when we do the regular freehand drawing tools, mostly because they're pretty unintuitive right now.

If you click the "plus" you're adding fog, if you click the "minus" you're subtracting fog. The entire map starts out covered by fog, so you'll want to remove some fog first. After you click the plus or minus, you'll be clicking the corners of a polygon on the map—double-click to close the polygon. You can also hold the shift key down and drag the mouse around for freehand drawing. Fog updates aren't sent to the players until you click the "save" button.

Is there a way to add additional maps to it? When I first get there, I see the dungeon map, and two blank "basic" maps. It looks like that's the full palette of what's currently available; is it, or am I missing something?

No uploading maps yet here is what paizo game space has for features now.

Not part of it, but it seems like the servers goblins need to be beaten into shape.

We architected Paizo Game Space specifically so its impact on the main site performance should be minimal—if the website is slow, it's 99% sure not to be Paizo Game Space.

OK, who I've got to sleep with in order to get Beta access?

Dr Who so he would take you back in time and let you participate in PaizoCon Banquet.

Oh, and my PaizoCon Banquet ticket was erased from my account by mutant alien zombies hackers from outer space! Really-really this time!

So I was at the banquet and heard that we were going to be getting early access. Never saw or heard anything else about this, did I miss something?

If you bought the ticket to banquet through the site and have it associated with your messageboard account you can enter gamespace.paizo.com and log in using you messageboard login and start betatesting.

If the ticket was bought in a way that did not associate it with the messageboard account, tough luck - you have to wait until it's open to regular mortals like the rest of us...

That worked, thanks for info.

Are we getting close to open beta / full access for this yet? I'd really like to try it out, but I decided to go to Gencon this year, not PaizoCon. :(

I hope there are some experienced VTTers in the beta test along with the inexperienced. Any experienced users have an initial impression? Thanks!

I have some basic experience with Fantasy Grounds. After a few days playing around with Game Space, I can tell you this...

It is a nice a simple VTT. Some basic features are still in the works from what the developers have said in response to some of my posts. You won't have a character sheet like some other VTTs, and you will probably want to hand type most of your dice rolls. There is a macro tool that will let you input common dice rolls and then copy the text to a chat command so you don't have to type it all the time. Obviously, there is an Initiative tracker that rolls initiative for everyone.

There are a decent amount of icons/tokens available in the beta right now. It will certainly be great when you can import maps and tokens, which I am sure will be developed in the future.

Hey, this looks great. Thanks for looking into a product like this. :)

For what it's worth, MapTools has been the standard go-to for most live, online campaigns that I've been a part of, though it also seems as though for such a great program, there's a lot of confusion. If yours cuts down on that...

It would be fantastic.

I should've been more clear, by "experienced" I am thinking of at least 2 years of regular (roughly weekly or bi-weekly) VTT games. Do you fall in that category? I'm really interested in hearing about the experience from that side as well.

How long before the beta opens for a wider audience?

I believe if you click the name of the macro it inputs it into the chat for you with no copy/pasting needed. You just have to hit "enter/return" in the chat to publish it.

This.

The macro copies the text into the chat panel for you.

I thought you were copying and pasting the text yourself :D

I'm personally quite a fan of the fact that you can name rolls whatever you want and they appear in the chat as you have named them. I feel it really helps with the "role" playing part when my sorcerer's spell can be called "Fiery Death Ball of Burning" rather than just "fireball".

For those poor souls who bought tickets at the door can we see a screen shot or two? I am super excited to see this in action.

Is anyone else doing anything with groups with Game Space?

I tried to run a demonstration, but no one showed up. I would love to run some players through the Beginner Box adventure, which I have prepared and am ready to run, but I need to know when people would be available.

Please let me know when you could show up if you are interested and have beta tester access.

The last part might be the biggest issue. I'm sure a lot of people would love to get in on your demonstration, but they don't have beta tester access (i.e. didn't attend PaizoCon nor know anyone who did so they might get a beta invitation from them).

I'd love to! ... but don't have access.

Speaking of, any word on when the rest of us might get to play with it? I haven't heard even the wildest of speculations for how long the closed-beta period is expected to last.

Access acquired (thanks verdigris!). I'd love to run through the Beginner Box adventure some time. I'll PM you for details.

I got a beta code from a friend, but I'm getting an "unknown error" when I go to redeem the code. What am I doing wrong?

You have the "Game Space Beta Tester" tag on your name. Perhaps it actually worked? Have you tried to get into Game Space despite the error? (Other than that, I have no idea - I'm merely eagerly awaiting its release.)

Game Space Beta Tester

I started a thread for Beta tester DMs looking for players and players looking for DMs.

Please check it out.

If anyone happens to have a key/pass they don't need I would absolutely love to get in on this :)

Silver Crusade Game Space Beta Tester

Ditto :)

Our gaming group just set up a projector/mirror rig for our weekly game, and I am very excited about Game Space.

Was there any indication from the banquet as to the timing of the actual release?

I just found this....

I love you guys even more now.

Also as a follow up... you mention that if we have the PDFs from the Flip Mats or Map Packs, we will have those maps for Game Space. However, what about the APs? If we have the PDFs of an AP (either through free w/ subscription or purchased separately for older APs), will we also get credit for those maps? Or will the program allow us to load those PDF files directly (or for that matter, other PDF or image files)?

I hope that more information on this will be forthcoming. It sounds like a really great thing!

So, I've just rolled a bunch of bug fixes. One of the more immediate fixes is that of d8's and d4's should be more random.

Please let us know if this gets anywhere close to being a reality!
I'm using Roll20 and it works pretty well but it isn't Pathfinder specific.
Having all the APs and such elwould be a boon but if the basics aren't there
(customizable API, random dice, dynamic lighting, fog of war, voice, LFG and social tools for replacing players who 'no-show', layers, etc, etc.)... I'm already a PFO backer, AP subscriber and have bought the core books as well as several supplementals like inner sea and others so I'd say I'm invested. I'd love to hear more but I guess I'll continue running campaigns on Roll20 (like We Be Goblins!, etc.) until someone nudges me.
Good luck with it!

A few things. We will probably not be doing integrated voice chats. At least it is not on our radar right now. There are plenty of places that do that and do it well. We'd rather work on functionality and let you use the tool you like best there. Also dynamic lighting will not be anything we do for awhile. I've got ideas on that but it is so far out of the normal table experience that it's not within radar range. We have the beginnings of the social tools and fog of war and random dice are in of course. The big deal is bringing the content from AP's, modules, and scenarios into it at high resolutions and getting drawing in like you would have on a normal table. It'll get better and better as we go. =)

Thanks, Lissa, always glad to hear more about the project.

How's the testing (beta?) going? Well, I hope!

Scarab Sages Game Space Beta Tester

I would love to give this a test if anyone has access they can pass me. Seeing that everyone who has requested access in the past now has a "beta tester" tag, I'm assuming this is the way to go!

Game Space Beta Tester

I would also love a beta tester pass if there are some more to share :)

Liberty's Edge Game Space Beta Tester

I would also like to test out game space. I have never played on a VTT program so would be interesting to see how newbie friendly it is.

Beyond Adventure Paths will modules be able to be added as well at some point? And can we expect a 2014 release date?

I cannot express in this forum post my intense desire to begin using this VTT! Please continue to test and code and release when ready, but know that I am truly excited to use the final product.

The beta is shaping up nicely. I searched the thread(s) here for discussion on Pawn Facing. Is that on the list of "To Do"?

I don't think Pathfinder uses facing for characters.

It doesn't. That was something that came up a lot when they were doing the stealth rules playtest a year or so ago.
