@Daniel Stewart - we are not using Traits. You also have alchemy crafting kit from the APG, mess kit from Ultimate Equipment (though OSGMO might let those items slide...) and something in your "Racial Modifiers" (under Skills) from the APG - we are using the CRB only!
Also you seem to have a Status line near the bottom possibly from a Kobold Press Midgard Campaign?
Old School GM Obermind |
Thank you OSW :)
@Daniel: Lets start with the things OSW pointed out, and we can take it from there.

And I think we can all now safely agree character creation proceeds much slower with PF1e, than if we would be using say for example OSE or Swords & Wizardry ;)

Well, because I take the time to cut and paste every feat, class ability, racial statblock etc into my alias for easy reference, it does take me a long time.
For me, the most onerous and laborious part of creating PF1 characters has always been choosing and annotating the Skills; and then choosing/purchasing Equipment and annotating all the various damage values, weights, damage types, ammunition amounts, check penalties etc….
I went with average gold for my class by the way, and had to put a couple items on hold. I still think I need to tweak my rations and miscellaneous gear etc…

Darcy should be updated now. I had to lower my DEX, raise my WIS, and CHA to spend the 20-points. Not happy with the inflexibility of the system to build you character as you wish. If we did rolling, I'd be able to have a 18 DEX, and a 7 & 8 in WIS, CHA, but I can't with the point buy. Just not a good design in my opinion.
I understand I can roleplay the bad WIS, and CHA... but if a skill roll is called for, I still can only take the (-1). Just kind of takes away the "Old School" vibe to me...
But I'm willing to give it a shot.

Understood and acknowledged Darcy. But do you feel like a point buy system is less flexible than one completely based on random rolls?
I am just trying to find the best balance for us, since I distinctly remember 'someone', after having rolled 3d6 six times, saying that three negative modifiers was a pain in the ass ;)

Anyone ever tried DMing a game in which they just let the players choose their stats?

Yes. I said that converting from Old School to Pathfinder, as the low ability scores have a major effect in a system that uses ability scores in skill checks. I didn't necessarily love the negative modifiers with Darcy's original character... but it was playable as the ability scores don't have as much effect on the mechanics of the game. I've been playing Darcy with low WIS, and CHA... and now they're not as low due to mechanics. Her DIPLOMACY is now -1 not just play a bad Diplomacy.

BTW if I can figure out the whole Mapping aspect, I'm thinking about an introductory Pathfinder 2 campaign on here based in the Lost Lands. They do have some adventures and an adventure path. (Aegis of Empires) using PF2. Would start with The Fiddlers Lament and progressing onward. While I welcome PF2 veterans who can help with newbies integration, I'm planning on detailed explanations, and options to help those still unsure about Pathfinder 2 be more comfortable with it, and realize it's joyous utility, and motivation to roleplay your character.
Thought I'd post it here among people I'm comfortable with first, and actually make a recruitment thread (If required) when I'm ready to start.

Naaah, you said it when you rolled them, right at the get go. But nevermind the 'he said, she said'.
The only thing I can say scranford, is that I don't get it. And it is not easy for me to admit it, but it is true.
1. Initially when rolling 3d6 you were not very happy with Darcy's negatives.
2. But you argue she was playable, because the ability scores don't have as much effect on the mechanics (comes down to DM fiat I guess).
3. Then you were not happy when converting to PF1e because the negatives had a bigger impact. And she would not be playable.
4. Now that you lowered the impact with better ability scores, you argue that they are not negative enough?
I'm lost.
And since we are doing this exercise - how would you stat up Darcy in PF2e? Maybe we can try a similar approach.

Sorry. Yes I'm being a baby about it. I had finally bought into the old school and Pathfinder is definitely not a old school type game. I guess my frustration was going from an old school type game to a D20 type game came through. I'll just play Darcy the way I rolled her and will roll with it.

Hey scranford, this is pretty much where I was at a few months ago - I now know how to
A) make the Google Slide doc with the battle map locked as a Background
B) make the icons of each of the characters on a separate slide that can then be copied to each map for the players to move on the map.
I’ll PM you what I have learned and you can tool around with it until you are comfortable with the process. The one problem no GM has seem to have been able to overcome on Slides is how to create immovable blocks to hide parts of the map/create fog of war…
As for the explanatory stuff during play - you can see I’ve been doing a bit of that in Brainiac’s Rusthenge game - just trying to break down the mechanics and options for some of us noobs…though I’m not sure what you mean by “motivation to roleplay your character” - are you saying the *ruleset* promotes roleplay? In a narrative sense? I’m in a couple of other PF2 games here on the boards and those games still suffer from players that just…don’t get very invested in (or at least don’t seem to be actively engaged in) the story…

- The Guide Archetype is not Core.
- Current encumbrance is Medium which means:
Max Dex bonus is +3
A -3 check penalty on some skills
Speed reduced to 20'
Run is x4
- You have gear in value of approximately 117gp from an average starting wealth of 175gp, so you should not have 100gp left.
- I think there is something off with your skill points - Herolab tells me you have spent one extra? Probably related with your FCB - it seems you have selected +1 HP? Still does not match if you select +1 skill point.
- These two abilities seem to be from a different ruleset?
Ranger's Focus +2 (1/day) (Ex) As a swift action, listed bonus to att/dam vs. foe in sight until slain/surrenders/use again.

I imagine you are correct, and given that the light mace and buckler are “provisional items” I wanted for Talus but haven’t purchased, I’d say if you are right he may never buy them. I’m away from home until tomorrow afternoon, so limited to phone for posting and thus unlikely to try to adjust his sheet until then. I’ll complete his inventory then with a little more thought given to purchases with regard to practicality and personality.
I imagine his tattooing equipment for example, might be so heavy as the kit is more of a hinged box with various drawers/padded sections for needles and inks. Does he really need a hammer? Is it likely he only has tep days of food, and why is that strangely reminiscent of a certain local incarcerated pyromaniac who *also* arrived with two days worth of fold, even though he came from a completely different dimension/ruleset. Things like that. Apologies.

By the way, a mule or a donkey only cost around 8 gold pieces ;)Oceanshieldwolf |

I often forget about beasts of burden. Then again that may be due to a) fear of having friends stolen or robbed who can’t exactly cry out for help; b) not feeling like friends who can’t speak should really carry stuff for me if consent is tricky to ascertain; c) wondering if any of my personal *player* anxieties in a) and b) should really affect my *characters* unless of course they actively hold a) and b) to be true and; d) that one time my friend tried to disrupt the grimdark game I was running (wasn’t even grim or dark, but I think he was having a crisis about RPGs and their place in our societal milieu) who decided his really quite savage character was going to have a pet cow called “Daisy” who had to absotively accompany the party *everywhere* and if anything untoward happened to Daisy said character was going to completely have a mental breakdown and fall to pieces.
Having said all that, I can totally see Talus having a donkey called “Number 9”. A bit late for that though…
Old School GM Obermind |
Apologies OSGMO for any assumptions made on my behalf with regard to Talus making it so far inside Grimmsgate without being accosted, especially given the Recent Unpleasantness. Feel free to wind back the clock if alarums need be raised…
All good, all good.
And yeah, I feel like using pack animals has fallen into disuse, probably because DMs felt the tendency to use them to 'screw the players over' - 'you're going into the dungeon, where do you leave your donkey?', or 'as you come out of the cave, the mule has been killed and eaten, and the gear it was carrying is gone'.
For some reason or another, back in the day I also went into that dark place for some time, but eventually realized it is stupid to ALWAYS mess up with the mule or the donkey or the cart. It CAN happen, but does not need to happen EVERY single time they are left unattended. I think I became a better person for that :D

We had "Peebles I-XV" during much of my old table top gaming - became a running joke that each of our pack mules were scions of the original Peebles.
I'm sure at some point one of these doughty pack animals saved a TPK with a panicked kick...
By the way OSGMO - got some inspiration and have a Dwarven Bodhrán playing Bard incoming...

I took the extra 10-minutes to go back and find who had the vinegar. Don't understand what the big deal is... but Okay. I'll make sure to go back through the old posts before posting.
Jaline is the one usually pickling and selling them - maybe she has a bigger quantity? She is the wife of Cark Withers - he maintains the chickenhouses
And... I believe Darcy has done as much as anyone to try to move things along.
Old School GM Obermind |
Sure, but why would you assume it takes 10 minutes? Do you think Jaline is an MMORPG npc with a question mark above her head waiting for you to click her and get the vinegar? Maybe she is. Maybe she is not? Why make assumptions?
Why not simply post - Darcy heads out to retrieve some vinegar (Jaline is the one usually pickling and selling them - maybe she has a bigger quantity? She is the wife of Cark Withers - he maintains the chickenhouses). On her way she almost runs over... or gets run over by some slack jawed village idiot. "Hey look where you're going you dolt".
Post what you want to do, embellish it, enrichen it, put your twist on it. that's perfect. But the outcome of your actions, how long it takes, if you get the vinegar, if you get eaten by a grue, that is my job.
Darcy Sparrow |
BTW I was talking about me as a player taking 10-minutes to go back and find the in-game post not Darcy. Sorry for the mix-up.
I got it. And this is the last I'll comment about this. Keeping Player and character knowledge is important to me, and I'll try not to use player knowledge to take actions in character. At the same time in this instance the character had knowledge that wasn't readily available to the Player in my opinion. But like you said it's your game, so I'll play it your way.
I hope you're not seeing this as an adversarial post. I'm not upset in any way, but sometimes the written word doesn't evoke the intended emotion. I think that our shared passion for the game will only enrich the experience once we get on the same page. :-)
