Chip recognizes these as diatha mounds, home to a species of explosive slug common to Vesk-2. Found throughout the galaxy, diathas store energy in chemical chains, rather than in fat deposits, causing the slugs to smell like raw petroleum. When threatened, diathas bite. and they sometimes regurgitate volatile materials that ignite on contact with air into the wound. A normal slug is about the same size as a ysoki.

The vesk nods. He quickly secures his own defrex mount with the rest of the herd. Then jogs over and begins climbing down.

Kaz slides, in, nearly falling, but pulling it together at the very end. The air is hot an noxious. Armor environmental protections should suffice though. The mother panics a bit, not understanding Kaz is here to help. It has stop thrashing, so it won't sink further, but the heat of the mud will kill it soon.

Kaz formulates a plan Engineering to fashion a device to drag it out. Life Science or Survival to coax it out calmly. Athletics to drag it, but you'll get burned too.

Unfortunately, it won't be that easy. Two diathas emerge from the mounds, looking to make a meal out of whoever is invading their lair.

Chip's drone separates from his head and takes a shot at Blue. Chip, meanwhile, takes Kaz' suggestion of a litter and starts juryrigging one to allow him to use one of the bikes to drag the trapped creature out.

The vesk hesitates just a moment trying to determine best course of action. He hoped he would have a little more time before the space slugs were on top of him. Maybe he could kill one quickly then next round use the android’s device to rescue the mama.
With that he turns to the blue slug and viciously claws at it.

Aldo slashes one of the diatha deeply with his claws, while Angel solidly shoots another. In a moment they both begin to shudder and expand, and before Kaz can do anything about it, they both explode! the first does Fire: 1d6 ⇒ 5 and the second Fire: 1d6 ⇒ 4 Kaz make a REF save versus each. DC is a paltry 9 for half damage.

The threat is over, but the defrax is still stuck. With the jury-rig, a simple athletics check with a bonus will be enough to get it out.

Still celebrating the space slug with his bare hands, Kaz takes the explosion full in the face.

But the defrex is still suffering and trapped. He does his best to shake it off and get moving. At Chip’s holler he looks up and grabs the jury rigged equipment. He hooks it to the stuck defrex and starts pulling.

The mother defrex finally comes free of the boiling mud. She's injured, but will heel in time. The 9 young immediately bray in relief and follow her. It looks like she's also going to follow you. Since these defrexes are quite young, you think you can fit them in the hold!

What's more, Kaz notices a dead corpse in the ravine. It looks pretty bad, but it's still holding a tactical railgun that looks like it's in good shape.

For your success here you earn a bonus 400 XP. I've also added the gun to the tracker, ready to be claimed.

With the herd now tamed and following, all you need to is get back to the FireStorm, load them, and deliver them. The ravine is pretty tight, so they won't wonder off. Still, it's a tense portion of the job.

I need a marching order, and the HERD counts as one PC in the order. It's wide enough that you can walk to the left and right if that's how you play it. I also need a Perception check from each PC.

Kaz gives a tremendous shout and slashes the ghoul's neck so hard that it's head flops backward. The body hits the ravine floor unceremoniously.

It doesn't take long for Kaz to scramble up to the top. Suddenly the very charred but not yet dead nuar stirs. He grits his teeth and turns his head to Kaz, that's when Kaz sees that he's holding a frag grenade! “It’s EJ Corp—you don’t just get to quit.”

It causes Kaz DMG: 2d6 ⇒ (6, 2) = 8 half with a DC 15 REF.

Kaz's armor and reflexes make it little more than an annoyance.

Kaz sifts through what's left of the body, and finds the gear intact, mostly.

    The vesk brings back the loot. We have good news and bad news. He makes sure he catches the eye of each party member. These guys were sent by EJ, the naur said “…you dont just get to quit…” He lets that sink in a moment.

    But on the good side, they had some nice gear. I like this heavy cannon and armor.

    The party recovers from the blast and herds the defrex into the cargo, and heads towards the ranch! For succeeding at getting them to the ranch your party earns 3,000 XP.

    When you return to Vesk-3 and arrive at Skitterhaven ranch, you can land in an open field where they can herd the defrexes into a pasture adjoining a well-maintained barn. Adani and Karm greet you inside. They take inventory of the delivery, counting the defrexes you managed to bring. They seem delighted at how successful you were! They start to count them in order to pay you out.

    Slight retcon

    While onboard the FireStorm Kaz takes all the recovered weapons and armor. He takes time to clean and inspect everything. He hands the Tactical Railgun to Angel, Still in decent shape under all the dirt and grime. The vesk seems to be moving stiffly. The vesk bares his teeth in a way the other have found is a vesk’s smile. Going to have to get used to wearing heavy armor again. Im a little slower but its just such an advantage to shrug off minor hits.

    Kaz claims the Tactical Rail Cannon and heavy armor. There is some decent stuff here, claim what you want.
