It's cool, I was just having some fun with the fact that the question wasn't answered, so I earned whatever response I get :)

Once we learn how were doing combat I'll post, and Include some sort of response that will possibly offer an olive branch. Just wait till everyone finds out their cousins...

Website was flaky this morning — I’ll get initiative sorted soon, but I’ve learned not to let website eat long posts when it is temperamental

But Kunala will be going then orc if we want to get started.

I do simplified initiatives

Kunala
Enemy
Party
Enemy
Party.

One round per day action

Burnt wagons are not shown, but the wagons with drivers are yours.

WE ARE IN COMBAT!!!
To speed up things, random encounters and trivial combats that do not contribute to the story have been removed.

I am trying to balance story pacing, player agency, and interactive roleplaying to keep things as enjoyable and interesting as possible.

I will try to keep the initiative simple to get a round a day. The first round may not be a full round, but every other round should be. In some cases I will try to speed things up.

One thing that can get shortchanged is stealth abilities, as it is hard to keep the whole party on hold as one character sneaks around. I will try to allow sneaky characters with rolls I will make to get in good positions prior to these map style combats.

ok, got my post up, I think I did everything correct and spelled it out, if there are any errors please let me know.

Perfect we are rolling --- pathfinder orcs are a different breed than old school orcs!!

By the time I went back and read the 'the orc will bolt behind trees ' I had already rolled the Parry and Riposte, figured I'd leave it and have you check to make sure it was done right.

As the teamsters get the wagons ready to depart, Jasper jumps in the rear wagon, Emerald the second one, and Malin huffs and puffs as he runs to the lead wagon. A burst of drumbeats comes from the woods to the right playing a martial tune and marching sounds can be heard from the woods to the right of the rear wagons and blood curdling orcish war cries. From the woods nears the right of the lead wagon orcs emerge with javelins in had ready to throw at an opportune moment. Further up the road, archers emerge and fire at the lead wagon, three out of four arrows hit and explode in a burst Tibold confirms is alchemical flame setting the right of the lead wagon on fire. Near the squad of archers, another four emerge with falchions and are itching to charge into battle. You notice they seem to waiting for something. Sigvard and those of you that know orcish tactics know the visible orcs are short of the typical five squad warband with support troops such as scouts.

I'm sorry if I am a little confused GMT, but who are Tibold and Sigvard?

Tibold=Fiona. Sigvard=Emreald and Fiona. Shoulda edited from other thread better

Not an Eagles fan, but that was not a penalty that should have been called to end the game. We can update later as not everyone has gone, and our pace doesnt include weekends, so this thread is at 100% participation so far.

I was rooting for Kansas City, but your right. If KC had been forced to take the field goal then, It would have been interesting to see if Philly could have drove for a score.

Meh. Decisive play of the game was the fumble returned for 6. Without that particular play, the last few minutes would have been a completely different scenario. Even the penalties didn't affect the final minutes as much as the turnover touchdown.

As a Cowboys fan, I agree and have more experience with the impact of turnover TDS than most. Jalen Hurts thought he was Dak Prescott for one play.

Some of us were raised to respect the memory of what Tom Landry gave us.

Among other things, he was the first coach to bring computer analysis of players to the professional league.

As a UK based (Bears) fan I'm a lover of defensive football and low scoring arm-wrestles of games but enjoy the Super Bowl as an annual tradition :)

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Jimmy Johnson created a table to exactly assess the value of every draft pick that is used to this day.

And, 1985 Bears is still the best defense. Seattle's Legion of Boom that destroyed Peyton Manning in Super Bowl is probably the second best I saw.

And the scout is finally dead!!

So I've been watching the conversations about Sunday's game. I actually just watched bits and pieces. My wife on the other hand watched the whole thing. She actually watches more football than I do these days. She plays first person shooter games too, I have the best wife ever.

I grew up a packer's fan (lived in Wisconsin when they won the first two Superbowls) and she grew up a browns fan (she can remember being three and rooting for Jim Brown the last year he played) So we just adopted the others team.I follow KC a little, have since Marty Schottenheimer left the browns and went there, but like Érme I prefer defensive systems and players. Which with the modern rules changes makes it harder.

As for best defenses? Tribute pointed out Buddy Ryans 46 zone and Seattle's legions of Boom. Earlier era the 'Steel curtain' has to be in the conversation, as does Tony Dungy's 'Tampa Two.' For me a 'dark horse' is the packers defense in the mid 90's when Reggie White went there. Fun Fact "As of 2020, the Packers are the only team since the implementation of the salary cap to score the most points and allow the fewest in the regular season." Of course growing up a packers fan I may be a little prejudice. Sadly, I think we need to throw the early 'Ravens' teams in there with Ray Lewis. Which, as a browns fan, just pains me.

@Kunala: Agree with you - Reggie White made any defence he played on better - as for epic D's let's not forget the 1991 Eagles with the aforementioned White - they had a terrible offense (recall Jimbo McMahon got hurt and they went through a "QB of the week" scenario) and still got to the playoffs! Stacked defensive team...

Also have a soft spot for Ron Rivera's free scoring 2006 Bears D... Lovie gets the love for implementing the Tampa Two in Chicago, but Ron was the players coach who made it work.

The Packers had one of the best pass rushing LBs in Tim Harris who they let go to SF after 4 amazing years in 1990. I’ll always wonder why. But eagles of 1991 and New York Jets of 1985with Mark Gastineu were amazing defensive lines. The New York Sack Exchange Jets had some great years with Klecko, Gastineu and others.

Some New Orleans Jim Mora years had good defenses too with crappy offense

If you want a defensive slug match, I think the 2011 Alabama-LSU game and the 2012 National Championship rematch qualify. I maaaaaay be biased though.

So, um, central Ohio here, the last football game I went to was with my son-in-law (Who came to here to get his masters and doctorate) in the "Shoe."

UA alum and employee here. I don't watch the games as much as I used to. Mainly because I get on my mom's nerves when I watch it at her house. :P

That's funny, but I'll resist the urge to comment about someone's mom, that never goes over well :) And employee? What department? My wife works in student accounts at a small local liberal-arts college here.

Before 2008 I watched almost every game, college and pro. But I started working on third shift and needed to sleep, and I only had one out of three weekends off. So, I just didn't watch as much. While I was at work I could check the games and highlights and got used to doing that. Once I left that job in 2018 I just wasn't as interested in watching every single game.

Alabama Water Institute. I'm pretty sure I can share that since my names on the staff page.

And it's more because I tended to get into it a bit too much. My mom said that as long as they paid for my college, she'll say Roll Tide.

Whoops, I didn't realize the red borders = dead. And I didn't realize the fleeing orcs were literally off the map.

I don't think Fiona could have shot another missile, so instead, her Round 4 action would be to double-move into the woods. I had moved her 30 feet North but I don't remember the exact square she was in before GM moved her into the woods.

OOC, I'm fine with exiting combat if that's what the party wants

BTW: I'm very aware Drektan hasn't introduced himself to anyone.

Part of his ongoing role is that he doesn't need a name until/unless someone asks about it. This is NOT a prompt for someone to ask about it. Just player-to-player communication about something I think might have raised an eyebrow or two otherwise.

I will be purrfectly happy if we go through the entire AP without it ever coming up.

His eyes widening as Tacitus asks him what house Lebeda would do to bandits, Kunala turns, looking furtively from the halfling to the catfolk. "I'm sure I don't know."

What would house Lebada do with bandits?
Knowledge (nobility): 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (20) + 4 = 24
bluff: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (4) + 6 = 10

Did Kunala's roll give him any information about how the nobility normally handles bandits?

hmmmm, my intent is for Kunala to be neutral good, but his statement feels more neutral to me. I think hanging is a normal punishment, so I don't think it's really evil to use it as leverage. But strangling to death has to be worse than a quick sword.

Everyone ok with Kunala claiming to be neutral good if he intends to follow through? If we hang one it may encourage the other to talk. If that makes him true neutral, I'll have to consider the next options carefully.

yeah, I've spent the last four hours avoiding his post thinking about it.

Tacitus is a lawful neutral follower of a lawful good god, usually the rout I go with that is law>good but with overall good intentions. As far as tacitus is concerned there is no crime in ending their lives by hanging or beheading, but drawing and quartering is probably gonna seem excessive to him for frontier justice.

FWIW, I attempted a kingmaker game almost 10 years ago as a player and the party fell apart after our first bandit encounter because of fundamental differences of how to handle prisoners in the frontier who would have killed you with no second thought so it's certainly interesting to see it happen again, albeit with a better outcome of course haha.

what happened:

a moral discussion about whether removing a hand was more or less merciless than execution, considering the wilderness and lack of resources to make sure the hand wound doesn't kill them later.

Suffice to say this story is why I always stress the importance of a session 0 for irl groups.

I'm not recommending 'drawn and quartered' but I am recommending hanging, and we have no real means to guarantee their neck breaks, so I'm assuming they will die of suffocation. I think a quick death by sword would be merciful.

Of course, when were the ones deciding what will happen and to whom, Kunala will be more willing to take things on a case by case basis. But here, as employees of the merchants, I think it's safe to assume they will be executed and a merciful death is worth the consideration for them.

Also, GM Tribute, if we hang one, will his slow painful death by suffocation give us any modifiers to intimidation to offer the second a more merciful death if they provide information?

I would think in real life it would, but game mechanics can be finicky.

If it helps put your mind at rest, I fully understand why frontier justice is a thing. Amelia, well, a sheltered city-girl isn't exactly going to understand nor like the violence, but she's smart enough to know that sometimes justice has to be cold and harsh.

That said, she might not be smart enough to know when she might be better off keeping her mouth shut.
