Savage Firefly - want some "space western" adventures?

Game Master ZenFox42

This is a game set in the Firefly/Serenity universe, using the Savage Worlds system

So, to recap :

The Captain is the owner of record of the ship, and we don't need to say who exactly paid for the ship. The rest of what the Edge does is at the bottom of my last post, above.

The Nouveau Riche Edge gives you the starting money from Filthy Rich without any continuing income.

The +4 military armor is now $500.

We're taking 20% off the top of your profits for food, fuel, maintenance, insurance, taxes, and docking fees.

Please update your PC's accordingly. Sorry for the changes, but the setting will be better for them. Thanks for all your ideas and input!

So Atlas, I'm presuming there must be a story to the name 'Whiteangel.' At first I thought you must be recycling, but no, I checked, it's new, and you have eight aliases all named Whiteangel?

Mokshai - if you can just get your money back from that website, I'd suggest you to to PEG's (the company that created Savage Worlds) website. I've never had any problems with them, and once you've paid your $10, you can download updated versions for free forever! You can purchase the PDF
HERE.

ALL - it sounds like we're getting into some roleplaying already, so go ahead and post how you came to be on the ship in Gameplay. You can banter with each other for the next couple of days while we're waiting for new PC's.

If you haven't posted a PC yet, don't worry, I will check Recruitment every day, and won't start the actual game for another couple of days.

Ha! I was wondering until someone caught on!

All of my friends know this, and since all of you are my friends....

It's the direct-translation of my ancestral last name before it was anglicized.

The clan from Germany that my family is from had the last name Weissengel.

Weiss is German for white, and engel is angel.
(Also, Weiss is spelled with a letter that isn't in the English alphabet, so that means more harder.)

Hence. White Angel. In the days when last names originated based on what your occupation was, I figure they must have been a line of monks or something.

Also, awesome.

I mean, if a paladin shows up at your door and sublimely states that he represents the Order of the White Angel, he probably means business!

Also, I've kinda incorporated it into most of my characters, where all the games I play in exist in the "Angel-verse". There's a secret Order that is like the Order of the Gauntlet, but way whole bunch more awesomer. And when you are initiated you take the last name to show membership.

"The Order of the Gauntlet is good. They do what they can," High Father Joachim Whiteangel said, setting down his goblet.
"We do...what is necessary."

Version 1.5 of the newly named Daisy Mae Puckett. :)

ALL - I've made a post in Discussion that I'd like everyone to read (altho you don't have to do what it asks...).

At this point I'll go ahead and take the Captain role now that we have a clear picture of what that entails. I'll rework my edges and backstory appropriately.

I actually like figuring out name origins, as a surprising amount of history can be discovered in them.

My own last name is hard to trace for various reasons, but it includes a Slavic diminutive at the end, which makes the best guess at the meaning to be son (or of the line) of Gabriel.

Did a little reading, and it looks like the Engel to Angel shift might have been a linguistic coincidence that became popular in the middle ages. Prior, it may have referred to Angle, as in the people group the Angles which was the basis of the name Angleland or England. In that case, it might refer to a family that lived in England prior to the Saxon and Norman invasions, or a german from Angeln, the part of germany the Angles originally came from.

White gets attached to surnames for all sorts of reasons, such as being paler than most, blonde, living in a place with white clay or sandy soil, etc. England was called Alba (latin for White) by the Romans, possibly because of the stark paleness of the natives compared to Mediterraneans. It could also symbolize a political affiliation, such as Orange being loyal to Prince William I in Holland, White being a royalist in Russia, and specific to Black and White, papists and anti-papists (anti-catholics) respectively.

So while it did come to mean Angel in the middle ages, it is probably older than that, and instead refers to an old ancestral line, those pale mofo's from Angeln.

As far as I can tell, my last name is a corruption of Mearnag to Warnock. Mearnag was a saint in Scottland. Never really looked into it further than that.

Able St.Germaine-Montclair, will you soon be joining the crew in Gameplay?

We still have a spot for Mokshai, if you're still lurking. And Irnk posting only the once, so I assume he's out or RL has him indisposed.

Sorry, Wrenched my back yesterday. I will have my character fully up tomorrow due to being out with pain and painkillers. :(

I did ask for my money back, and did find a copy of the rules that I can use, which I do have a character made up. But will have the alias done up tomorrow.

Ok, so this is what I got for a character done up.

Mokshai - a couple of issues : you can only have 4 points of Hindrances, so you'll have to drop the Major one or two of the Minor ones.

Also, my description of Heroic tells you how you have to act (you "never says no to a person in need"), but does not increase Agility by one die type. So you must drop Agility to d6, and update the skill dice values to stay at 12 points.

I don't see Persuasion and Stealth included as some of the "free" d4 Skills.

If you're going for a Fighter type (thanks!), an Athletics of d8 would be good (but not necessary). It now covers a LOT of activities in SWADE (including throwing things, like daggers, which you should have several of, including at least one non-metallic one [twice the cost]).

Also, with a Vigor of d6, your Toughness would be 5, and with a Fighting of d6, your Parry would be 5.

Are you using the SWADE core rules? My cover of the book has a red-head woman standing in a snowstorm.

on tablet. soon as i am back on my computer i will clarify thoughts as that is where the rules i downloaded are.

I have a spreadsheet that I created myself to help me build Savage PC's. It's not user-friendly, so I don't want to send it to you, but I could use it to enter your PC and let you know exactly what needs tweaking, if you're interested.

Will check it early tomorrow morning, EST, and post comments.

Mokshai - according to my spreadsheet, you're 2 points over on skills.

You could get rid of Riding (probably not much call for that) and Healing (we have plenty of healers), and boost your Athletics to d8 if you want to be a strong all-around fighter (it covers throwing daggers and grappling with opponents). That will bring your skill points to the desired value.

I didn't check the cost of all your gear, but other than the skills, everything looks good!

I never had riding.

Bit confused with skills, didn't think I was over.
2 points of hinderances gave me 1 edge trait which I took as your edge of new rich.
2 points of hinderances gave me 2 extra skill points

Athletics bumped to d8 from d6 - after removing healing. (2 steps)
Notice d6 - 1 step
stealth d6 1 step
Common Know d4 - 0 step
Persuasion d4 - 0 step
(Total 4)
Driving d6 - 2 step
Piloting d6 - 2 step
Shooting d8 - 3 step
Fighting d8 - 3 step
(Total 10)

Oh, I think I might have forgotten about the free Human Edge. I'll have to check that tomorrow morning.

Yeah, I forgot about the free Human Edge, and I meant Driving, not Riding (still probably not much call for that), you could put those 2 steps into Fighting and Shooting if you want to be *really* good at fighting.

Driving would be the mule or other ground vehicles.

At the very least, it might come in handy as I wanted to be passable, but not good at those, with chance to improve easily

Just FYI, in SW, a skill like Driving is typically only needed when you're chasing or being chased. You never need to make a roll under normal just-going-from-here-to-there conditions. But it's your PC, you can do what you want with him.

understood. never know when it would come in handy.

I understand there is an opening in this game, through contact with the GM. I'm working on a character and will post once I've worked through the first draft. Looking forward to the possibility of playing.

The position at the table may be by personal invite only, so don't assume open recruitment at this point.

Yes, this is not open recruitment.

Hello, all. ZenFox42 invited me to join your merry band. I'm working on reading through your adventures and looking for a role to fill. ZenFox suggested that a gunslinger would be a simple character for learning the system better and a good fit. Here is a quickly put together build. Please critique it soundly. Looking for story hooks. He is mostly a former soldier and current hired gun. I can layer in some complexity in his goals and backstory, but I want to make sure those jive with the rest of the party.

Tumbler - sorry for the delay, work occasionally slams me for a few days.

Your build looks good, but I haven't actually tallied up the total points yet, which may take another day or two.

You don't need to put any skill points in your native language, so those points can go elsewhere.

I'll tentatively accept this with the understanding that I may find other issues in a couple of days.

When your natural Toughness is 5, and you have 2 points of Armor, the traditional way to notate that under Toughness is 7(2) - total "toughness", and how much of that is Armor (because Armor Piercing weapons are a thing - that's the "AP" in your weapons descriptions).

plus i dont think 1911s are a thing yet.

Rufus - in the setting document, I said "All pistols, shotguns, non-assault rifles, and sub-machine guns (but not machine guns) from SWADE are available." I see no reason to specifically exclude the 1911s. I'm curious, what is your reasoning on this?

Sorry, I was thinking the other game Deadlands.

Never mind my thought. Just got mixed up on the settings. :)

Tumbler - please check your PM.

Tumbler - without the points put into Language, your skills are exactly right.

You might want to put your first Advancement towards making your Spirit a d6 - that's used to recover from Shaken (unable to act in combat).

RECRUITMENT FOR THIS GAME IS NOW OPEN AGAIN. ANYONE INTERESTED IN A "SPACE WESTERN" SETTING?

Seconding that. We have 3, and hoping for 1 more.

If you are a fan of Firefly, consider a chance to have adventures in the Firefly version of the Vast.

Liberty's Edge

If you are still looking for a player or two, I would be interested...if you have space. I think I recognize a few of these scruffy browncoats!!

Daniel - yes, glad to have you! There's a setting document link in the Campaign Info tab, the PDF is a little old, but I don't think any major changes have happened since then. But I will try to make the latest version available soon...

This is a low-tech universe, so pistols and rifles are about the most powerful weapons around.

There are several "iconic" PC types listed in the setting document, based on the TV show. Right now I think we have everything but a Psionic, but if that doesn't interest you and/or you're not that familiar with SW's magic system, feel free to pick anything else.

Please post here once you've had a chance to read the document, and let me know how well you know the SW system, what kind of PC you're considering, along with any questions you might have about SW in general or the setting in specific.

Liberty's Edge

Ok...sounds good...let me look at the rules...I have played some Savage Worlds before so I have some understanding of the game mechanics....and I will see about the psionic...could be fun!!

Well if you have your psionic then I guess it cannot be me :(
Daniel is awesome tho

Daniel - I haven't cross-referenced your build with the rules in front of me, but I think your Attributes and Edges are fine, but there's no reason to put any Skill points into Language, and you only need Focus but not Psionics. Raising your Notice and Fighting (which increases your Parry) would be a good idea. You don't have any items?

Evindyl - welcome! Psionics is rare in the Firefly 'verse, but if you have your heart set on it, you can take it too, since I kind of requested Daniel to take it. Maybe y'all could be siblings or something?

ok...update...

Robert:

Robert "Bob" Waterman
Novice Male Human, Drifter

Background
Bob’s life took an unexpected turn when he discovered his latent psionic abilities. Born with several congenital defects that left his body stunted and misshapen, he faced a world that often misunderstood and feared those with unique gifts. Despite his physical challenges, Bob’s mind was a powerful tool—one that could both connect and manipulate.

Description
Bob was born with several congenital defects that left his body stunted and misshapen. He stands around 4'10" tall, but his spine is so twisted he could be taller. His hair comes out in clumps all about his lumpy head. His eyes are two different colors; one blue and the other a very pale green. For clarity though ... "the document" says that Psionic characters s/b built as AB (Gifted) AND also seems to imply a hand wave to level requirements given that there are only 10 powers listed on page 5, not all of which are available to Novices (from an RAW perspective anyway).

Gifted itself is also Spirit-based, and yet Psionics is not a skill which crosses over to Spirit like Spellcasting, so it is still Smarts-based, as are specific power effects. So while I totally totally totally want to put together a Jean Grey build with TK as a base (+New Powers +Power Surge), I want to be sure that the base is correct to begin with, and then I hope I can figure out a good balance with everything.

ZF - is all of that correct?

WOW - that was so not meant to be a thread killer, I'm sorry

@Evindyll

Not a thread killer. Just he hasn't been on in a couple of days. If I see ZF, I will fire him a PM to check this.

Sorry, life has gotten in the way of my games for the past few weeks, and I promise to start checking every game page daily like I used to. I'll address Evindyll's questions tomorrow, I promise.
