A college professor, circling the drain as a meth addict.
I call mulligan!

I'll make a profile shortly but here are the rolls.

Okay not the smartest dude but not bad overall. SO three to 5?
Those rolls are impressive Linc, as in really unlucky.

Holidays are a busy time, let's see if posting helps to show interest hasn't waned.
Each other person of group 2 somehow managed to roll worse than the one before.

42 is average
Linc 32 boosted to 36
Reroll is good 45 boosted to 47 very similar to my rolls.

Humwa4015 rolled 31 boosted to 35

Jhaeman rolled 27 boostable to 35

Obviously the Demonic Random Number Generator(DRNG) loves Nick.

DRNG - The Higher they rise the harder they fall. Heh, Heh.

Nick - What's That?

DRNG - Never mind

Nick - thinks about the future - Prison term? Mishap every term?, no benefit rolls? - Worse possible aging roll, all physical stats at 1? Nick's eyes fill with terror at his presumption...

If you don't mind, I jump to the next phase with a little background included.

Kaya Family:
Years before Nicholas's birth the Kaya family of Efate began to follow the Authentic Movement researching an ancestor from 20th century Turkey. They follow, not always accurately, dress and customs from that milieu. His father Alp and mother Lydia nee' Rogers formerly of Alell works for a company that provides technical services usually as a subcontractor. The company is headquartered on Efate Highport and the family had, during Nick's childhood, decent but crowded quarters on it as well, as befitting an ordinary middle-class lifestyle.

Nicholas's adolescence:
Nicholas is a good natured lad of no great wit but very studious, a bit athletic, and interested in some artistic activities. His exceptional memory more than made up for his lack of imagination and quick wit. Attending a technically oriented school his studies involved some skills for working safely in a space environment. He joined some sports and did Audio/Visual and other arts oriented clubs. His parents arraigned for him to work as a technical apprentice for the same company they did after graduation.

Homeworld: Efate/Regina (Spinward Marches 1705) Note: Raised on Efate Highport in space.
Background Skills
Art:0 Cascade Skill(CS), Athletics:0 CS, Medic:0 Regular(R), Vacc Suit:0 R

Note: I like using the older edition term Cascade skill instead of specialized it just seems easier to distinguish from other skills with unusual specialization.

Group 2 will have to decide soon if we will try to be a formed group in character creation or more individuals. What do you guys think?

Jhaeman and Malaxius - Those rolls are terrible! Do it again!

OR

You can take the following array: 10 9 8 7 6 5

I would vote for a connected group. I always imagined that to be the most interesting part of the character-creation-minigame: that you can form connections between characters.

Nicholas Kaya wrote:

Nope. Just the holidays.

There are no cascade skills in Mongoose Traveller. Please use the rules we're using.

Strongly recommend you come in as a group so I don't have to shoehorn three completely different reasons for new people joining the team.

EDU: 2d6 ⇒ (4, 3) = 7

Better, still a bit low on the heady stuff, though.

So, if he becomes a scholar, it will probably be the Indiana Jones kind.

Nicholas Kaya - 8975B7 - Engineer? - Efate(1705) -Nic

Sorry I was completely unclear as to what I meant. Part of this is that I misremembered the exact old rules as to what exactly cascade meant. It's been decades after all. I just was using the term and only the term for the regular use of the specialized skill as versus the irregular use some of them have. I found the categorization of the skills unclearly worded in Mongoose Traveller and was trying for greater clarity and achieved exactly the opposite. I in no way intended to mean or even imply to use any other rules than MGT2e. Of course the rules are to be used exactly as you wish as always.

Okay, let's try this again!

Str: 2d6 ⇒ (4, 1) = 5
Dex: 2d6 ⇒ (3, 2) = 5
End: 2d6 ⇒ (5, 1) = 6
Int: 2d6 ⇒ (6, 6) = 12
Edu: 2d6 ⇒ (1, 2) = 3
Soc: 2d6 ⇒ (6, 3) = 9

SKILLS

For anyone not familiar with Traveller skill notation, if you have a basic understanding of the skill, you have a rank of 0. That means you can roll the skill without a penalty. If you have a rank of 1 or higher and there are sub-skills, you must pick a sub-skill to have that rank in. You still retain a rank of 0 in the general skill.

So for example, if you have Electronics 0, you're trained in basic electronics. But if you have Electronics (Computer) 2, you're really good with computers but still retain a 0 in all other aspects of Electronics.

_______________________________________________________________________

Another aspect of the skills system you should be aware of is that (unlike Pathfinder or D&D), which ability score you use with each skill is fluid, depending on the situation and what you can con your Referee into believing!

So, if you you have Gun Combat (lasers) 1 and you're firing a laser pistol, you'd roll 2d6, add your DEX modifier and 1 (for your skill). However, if you were instructing someone about the laser and its parts, you'd use your EDU modifier. If you were trying to field strip a laser pistol in the dark you'd use your INT modifier. If you were merely trying to field strip the laser pistol under full light and normal conditions, you wouldn't need to roll at all.

Similarly, one person might use their Streetwise skill with their SOC score (this is usual) to pick up rumors in a starport bar. But another person might use their INT score with Streetwise to look for patterns of crime in a local database. Still another might use INT+Investigation for the same thing.

In short, if you're not sure but you think you have an Ability+Skill combo the Referee hasn't asked for but you think is reasonable, as the Ref.

_______________________________________________________________________

Final idea here is sometimes called "Rule 68A", "A" being the hexidecimal notation for "10." Easy tasks require a result of 6, average tasks require a result of 8 (if I don't otherwise say, it's an 8) and hard tasks require a result of 10.

Very hard tasks might require a 12 or 14, but that's rare.

A few other rules to keep in mind:

BOONS AND BANES
If you take the time to set up a situation just right, or if you find the perfect tool or otherwise gain an advantage, it is rare in Traveller to receive a bonus (like a +1). More commonly the Ref will give you a Boon. In a firefight and certain other situations, a character with Leadership can grant boons to their fellow characters.

A boon means you roll 3d6 instead of 2d6, and drop the lowest result.

Similarly, if you're in a terrible position the GM may call for a Bane, where you roll 3d6 and drop the highest result.

___________________________________________________________________

COMBAT IS DEADLY

Combat will often be unavoidable, but Traveller characters die all the time. Try to avoid fights when you can. When you can't, sane people seek cover before returning fire.

___________________________________________________________________

REACTIONS

In a face-to-face game, Traveller combat can be very flexible and dynamic, with various defensive reactions available. But in a PbP game like this, they'd slow combat down to an absolute crawl, so instead the GM assumes that you will Dodge and/or Dive for Cover when appropriate.
___________________________________________________________________

TRAINING
Traveller rules assume that you are working on certain skills in your downtime. Hitting the gym, the streets or the books as appropriate. So please note on your character sheet which skill you're working on.

PLAYER's GUIDE
I highly recommend reading the player's guide, especially the character creation section.

That's a workable character, Jhaeman. Bring the EDU up to 5, please.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

STEP TWO
Everyone should have a name, a starter career choice and characteristics rolled up.

Now please do these things:

1) Choose a homeworld. Unless you have strong reason to do otherwise, choose one in the Regina subsector of the Spinward Marches (no red zone worlds, please). The highest technology level is 13 at Efate (Spinward Marches 1705), Uakye (Spinward Marches 1805), Pixie (Spinward Marches 1903), and Boughene (Spinward Marches 1904).

2) Start your character sheet. You can copy its format from the last page of the Player’s Guide.

3) Choose a species. Per the Player’s Guide: You may play a human, vargr, aslan or droyne, but in order to play one of the alien races, you must have Aliens of Charted Space Volume I (for aslan and vargr) or Volume II (for droyne) in order to roll up the character. Honestly, you’re probably better off going with humans.
No, really. Droyne characters will encounter some serious difficulties down the line…

4) Choose Background Skills that would be relevant to your home world. Core Rulebook, p. 9.

Let me know when you’re ready to continue.

I'm sorry everyone, but it'll be best if I drop out now. I really want to get into Traveller at some point, but getting my head around a whole new system and active campaign just isn't really in the cards for me right now between work, the holidays, and my other PBP games. One of these days the stars will align! Thanks for considering me.

Lincoln, Malaxius and Nicholas: Time to move on to your first term.

IF YOU DECIDE ON A UNIVERSITY:

STEP ONE: Roll for Entry. Roll 2d6 and add your EDU DM. The DM’s can be seen on p. 10 of the CRB. It’s -1 for a 5, +0 for 6-8, +1 for 9-11 and +2 for a 12. If your adjusted die roll is a 6+, you’re off to college. If you fail, go straight to your choice of careeers.

STEP TWO: Choose a Level 0 and a Level 1 skill from this list: Admin, Advocate, Animals (training or veterinary), Art (any), Astrogation, Electronics (any), Engineer (any), Language (any), Medic, Navigation, Profession (any), Science (any).

STEP THREE: Increase your EDU by +1 (remember, it can’t be higher than a 12 for this campaign. I’m no fun that way.)

STEP FOUR: Roll on a the Pre-Career Event Table (p. 17). Resolve any attendant dice rolls. Consider the Connections Rule (p. 19) and whether you can connect to any other Traveller this way.

STEP FIVE: Roll for Graduation. Roll 2d6+INT DM. If 6+, you graduated. If 10+, you graduated with honors.

STEP SIX: If you didn’t graduate, stop.

STEP SEVEN: If you graduated, increase both of the skills from Step Two by 1 (to 1 and 2, respectively).

STEP EIGHT: Increase your EDU by another +1 (Still can’t go above a 12).

STEP NINE: Note the modifiers for getting into various careers. Useful if you change careers.

STEP TEN: If your next term will be in a military service (Army, Navy, Marines), you can roll for a commission now.

__________________________________________________

IF YOU DECIDE ON A MILITARY ACADEMY:

STEP ONE: Roll to see if you qualify. The entry die roll is different for each service. If you fail, go straight to your choice of careeers.

STEP TWO: Gain all the service skills for your chosen career at 0, just like basic training.

STEP THREE: Roll on a the Pre-Career Event Table (p. 17). Resolve any attendant dice rolls. Consider the Connections Rule (p. 19) and whether you can connect to any other Traveller this way.

STEP FOUR: Roll for Graduation. Roll 2d6+INT DM. If 7+, you graduated. If 11+, you graduated with honors. But you gain a DM+1 if your END is 8+, and a DM+1 if your SOC is 8+.

STEP FIVE: If you didn’t graduate, STOP. You may still enter the career served by the Academy so long as your graduation roll wasn’t a 2 or less, but you may not make a Commission roll on your first term. If your graduation roll was a 2 or less, you must qualify to enter that career (but may still automatically enter any other career per the house rule.

STEP SIX: If your next term is going to be in the career served by the Academy, select any three Service Skills for that career and increase them to 1.

STEP SEVEN: Increase EDU by 1. (Still can’t go above a 12).

STEP EIGHT: If you graduated with honors, increase SOC by 1. (Still can’t go above a 12).

STEP NINE: If you Graduated with honors, you gain an automatic commission in the career served by the Academy.

STEP TEN: If you Graduated without honors, make a Commission roll for that service, with a DM+2.

_____________________________________________________

IF YOU ENTER A CAREER WITHOUT HIGHER EDUCATION:

STEP ONE: Ignore the qualification roll. Per the house rule, you’re in automatically.

STEP TWO: Pick an Assignment (sub-career).

STEP THREE: Go through Basic Training (i.e., take all the service skills at 0).

STEP FOUR: Roll for “Survival”. The die roll is different for every Assignment.

STEP FIVE: Roll on the Event table for your Assignment. Resolve any attendant die rolls. Consider the Connections Rule (p. 19) and whether you can connect to any other Traveller this way.

STEP SIX : Roll for Commission (military careers only. You may only roll for a Commission on the first term of your career. However if your SOC is 9+, you can roll on each term, but with DM-1 for every term after the first.

STEP SEVEN: Roll for Advancement. You may not roll for Advancement if you gained a commission in this term. The die roll is different for every Assignment. If you advance, gain an extra roll on any skill table for your career and Assignment. Increase your rank. You may also gain any bonuses from that rank. If your roll is equal to or less than the number of terms spent in this career, you must leave the career. If you roll a natural 12, you -must- remain in the career another term.

Nicholas Term 1:
Nick joins his parent's company as a trainee/apprentice. He works hard and acquires the basic technical skills it requires without any problems. Early on his maternal grandmother is visited by some relative, maybe an in-law from Alell. He talked briefly about the "interesting" ancient site on Efate, but Nick understood little and cared less as he doesn't find the ancients worth his interest. After several years of training and hard work, he faces the final exams and review. All the experienced trainees had to pass to get their General Technician Certificate and move up in the company. All others would be cut with only basic, doomed to menial work for scraps. Nick passed the knowledge exams quite well, but the challenge on applied work that required rapid, out of the box thinking when much less well. After much waiting, he was notified that he passed, but was disappointed to learn he was in last place among the graduated. No pick of the best jobs for him.

Malaxius Harvel. AA6787 - Archaological Field Researcher - Homeworld: Efate (Spinward Marches 1705) Link to profile.

Malaxius grew up near the famous Ancients-site on Efate and it always was his lifelong dream to be one of the scholars or scientists, who work on the site to unravel it's countless mysteries.
He tries to get accepted at university:
2d6 ⇒ (1, 6) = 7
That was close - so of to college he goes. As skills I choose Recon0 - he's probably learning how to find artefacts - and Science History 1, because I have already taken science Archaeology 0 as a Background skill.
Pre career event:
2d6 ⇒ (5, 1) = 6
So I gain 1d3 ⇒ 3 allies - this event would fit with establishing connections, but how would this work if noone else is from Efate?
Anyway:
graduation: 2d6 ⇒ (1, 3) = 4
And he's a dropout. Such a cruel galaxy concerning lifelong dreams.

"LInc" Forgrave - UPP897C85 - Bosun - Homeworld Dentus - Char. Sheet

I really couldn't think of a way to connect to other player characters either. Did Erryll go on a USO tour?
Maybe later in my career.

Malaxius Harvel. AA6787 - Archaological Field Researcher - Homeworld: Efate (Spinward Marches 1705) Link to profile.

The event was that he is/becomes part of a tightly knit group. So if one of you sees a connection-possibility here for his character, I wouldn't mind.
By the way: does the failed graduation mean that I drop out or can I just try to graduate again in the next turn?

Nicholas Kaya - 8975B7 - Engineer? - Efate(1705) -Nic

Nicolas is from Efate, mostly lives in orbit but could visit family or even been sent to the University for a course or two for his certifications. Not an unknown thing in our world. It's a little hard to see what skills would come from it, though a connection could be made with no skill involved at all, just how we met way back when. But that might not be best because only one connection can be made between two characters.

On the other hand you have an interest in Ancient Artifacts and I may have a distant relation that does two. Maybe we met through him, it might be made to work just hard to make it dramatic, not that it has to be.

Also I think it good that each of us makes a link to someone in each group. So if Mal links to me through his friend his second is to group 2 or if its my event link to him I should do so. What do all of you: G1 and G2 and always GM think?

Malaxius Harvel wrote:

I thought that it was a one time thing but I can't seem to find a rule that says so. There are well defined rules about having to leave a career on most mishaps or on some low rolls on advancement but not about Pre-career. It feels implied but that's just me. But you might consider that pre-career education does not provide any benefit rolls. No cash or other types of benefits. But this is a question for the GM.

Sounds good - let's do this!

Nicholas Kaya - 8975B7 - Engineer? - Efate(1705) -Nic

Okay then, Mal, let's start with your group. The GM wants to make or vet all the rolled Allies etc. but suggestions are allowed. The obvious binding element of a group you would be part of is one that put a lot of effort toward Pre-cursor civilizations, most of all the Ancients. Some may hold uncommon views or maybe even have a Vargr worshipper of them.

The Imperium controls everything about the Ancients, at least legally but some times they allow some visiting or investigation on their terms. Maybe my mysterious relation had or wanted a hand in it. The company I worked for got the support contract for the job. Fill in with some ideas here, or even have something completely different.

Since Beckett is a GMNPC I think this is a connection from your event to me, with Beckett as the link but one of your friends could have some relationship, blood or not, to me as well

This is already too long so I'll let you get a word in before I write a novel.

So I gain d3 allies - this event would fit with establishing connections, but how would this work if noone else is from Efate?

The allies are NPCs whom I will assign (or not - some I hold back for when you really need an ally.

does the failed graduation mean that I drop out or can I just try to graduate again in the next turn?

You're out. Time to move on to a career!

Worth repeating for newbies.

HOW SKILLS ADD

If you have a skill a 1 (e.g., Advocate 1) and gain the same skill at 1 (another instance of Advocate 1), you still only have that skill at 1. In other words, Advocate 1 and Advocate 1 = Advocate 1.

The exception, according to my house rule #12, is when you gain a skill at 0. This allows you to choose a Background skill at 0 instead.

When you gain a skill at +1, THEN you add. So Advocate 1 and Advocate +1 = Advocate 2.

The difference is the "+" symbol.

Malaxius, Lincoln and Nicholas, do your Second Term.

Remember, if your first term was University or Military Academy, you can ignore the entry requirements into your first career.

Remember to look for connections.

Roll on Service table: 1d6 ⇒ 2

"LInc" Forgrave - UPP897C85 - Bosun - Homeworld Dentus - Char. Sheet

Linc Forgrave - UPP897A85

First Term

STEP ONE: Ignore the qualification roll. Per the house rule, you’re in automatically.
Since he washed out of the academy, he joins the navy automatically.
Enter the Navy.

STEP TWO: Pick an Assignment (sub-career).
Picks Line/Crew Assignment.
Becomes Rank 0, Crewman

STEP THREE: Go through Basic Training (i.e., take all the service skills at 0).
Already did this at the Academy.

Also skill training; Line/crew: 1d6 ⇒ 6 Vacc Suit increases.

STEP FOUR: Roll for “Survival”. The die roll is different for every Assignment.
Survival INT 5+: 2d6 + 1 ⇒ (5, 2) + 1 = 8 Success.

STEP FIVE: Roll on the Event table for your Assignment. Resolve any attendant die rolls. Consider the Connections Rule (p. 19) and whether you can connect to any other Traveller this way.
Events: 2d6 ⇒ (4, 1) = 5
You are given advanced training in a specialist field. Roll EDU 8+ to gain one level in any skill you already have.
EDU 8+: 2d6 ⇒ (4, 3) = 7 Nope.

STEP SIX : Roll for Commission (military careers only. You may only roll for a Commission on the first term of your career. However if your SOC is 9+, you can roll on each term, but with DM-1 for every term after the first.
I may not roll.

Advancement EDU 7+: 2d6 ⇒ (4, 6) = 10 Advance!
Gain Rank 1; Able Spacehand and Mechanic 1

Also extra skill training; Advanced Edu: 1d6 ⇒ 2 Astrogation increases.

Malaxius Harvel. AA6787 - Archaological Field Researcher - Homeworld: Efate (Spinward Marches 1705) Link to profile.

Sry, my weeks always get crazy towards the end at the moment. But if I get it correctly, the connection-idea is of the table anyway.

STEP ONE/TWO: Ignoring the roll.
It seems like Malaxius' dream isn't lost yet: he didn't make the exams, but after mourning the lost possibility for a few days, he receives a surprising job offer to be trained as a field researcher to further the discovery of new artifacts. Somehow he must have been noticed by someone during his studies? Whatever: he starts packing immediately, happier than ever before in his life.

STEP THREE: Basic training: Malaxius'training has a practical focus, complementing his theoretical education at university: he takes Drive, Electronics, Diplomat, Medic and Investigate at 0).

STEP FOUR: Roll for “Survival”.
2d6 ⇒ (2, 6) = 8
Success

STEP FIVE:
Roll on the Event table for your Assignment.
2d6 ⇒ (1, 4) = 5
"You win a prestigious prize for your work, garnering both the praise and envy of your peers. Gain DM+1 to any one Benefit roll."

STEP SIX : -

STEP SEVEN: Roll for Advancement.
2d6 ⇒ (3, 6) = 9
Success
-Rank 1 (Science 1)
-Field Researcher: 1d6 ⇒ 2 Vacc Suit (0)
-Personal Developement: 1d6 ⇒ 6
