About Nicholas KayaCOMPLETE. PLAY READY Botting:
Nic's not too bright and knows it so tries to stop and think when he can. Very studious with a good memory, strongly relies on rote, tried and true routines to solve problems. Slightly pacifistic, does not like killing anyone, perfers non-lethal combat when any violence is unavoidable. Stressed by his forced criminal involvement but resigned to it. Depressed by recent events but not severely. Nicholas Kaya - 8975B7

Nic's short background:
Ni, born to a average blue collar family involved with the Authentic Movement, leading them to wear ancient Turkish dress. He grew up on Efate, mostly on the Highport, with good spacer skills. He worked for the same company his parents did, learning to be a technician and met a "relative" from Alell, who later mysteriously helps him. After some years Nic, accidentally accesses data that showed the company was corrupt and that resulted in an "offer" to take money or else, delivered, affably by Zirelle that resulted in an odd friendship. His pro-imperial views cause Nic to be endangered by a terrorist group so he flees Efate for Regina, and takes up martial arts. He stays in touch with an administrator of TAS, who later marries Mal. He flees Efate, ending on Regina where he joins a free trader. for a long time, he does minor tasks but is, eventually, moved up to do sensor work and later astrogation. He falls in love but when his heart is broken, he leaves for an uncertain future. My far too long background for Nicholas. Kaya Family:
Years before Nicholas's birth the Kaya family of Efate began to follow the Authentic Movement researching an ancestor from 20th century Turkey. They follow, not always accurately, dress and customs from that milieu. His father Alp and mother Lydia nee' Rogers formerly of Alell works for a company that provides technical services usually as a subcontractor. The company is headquartered on Efate Highport and the family had, during Nick's childhood, decent but crowded quarters on it as well, as befitting an ordinary middle-class lifestyle. Nicholas's adolescence:
Nicholas is a good natured lad of no great wit but very studious, a bit athletic, and interested in some artistic activities. His exceptional memory more than made up for his lack of imagination and quick wit. Attending a technically oriented school his studies involved some skills for working safely in a space environment. He joined some sports and did Audio/Visual and other arts oriented clubs. His parents arranged for him to work as a technical apprentice for the same company they did after graduation. Nic's first career term, become a lowly technician:
Nick joins his parent's company as a trainee/apprentice. He works hard and acquires the basic technical skills it requires without any problems. Early on his maternal grandmother is visited by some relative, maybe an in-law from Alell. He talked briefly about the "interesting" ancient site on Efate, but Nick understood little and cared less as he doesn't find the ancients worth his interest. After several years of training and hard work, he faces the final exams and review. All the experienced trainees had to pass this to get their General Technician Certificate and move up in the company. All others would be cut with only basic, doomed to menial work for scraps. Nick passed the knowledge exams quite well, but the challenge on applied work that required rapid, out of the box thinking, went much less well. After much waiting, he was notified that he passed, but was disappointed to learn he was in last place among the graduated. No pick of the best jobs for him. Nick's disappointed at not being promoted, actually there seems to be a hiring freeze on, revenues are down. Nic loyally accepts this as just bad luck, until one day he is trying to verify a work order on a shot up spacecraft, that had been cleared with Imperial authorities as a legitimate use-of-force. Quite unintentionally he broke through the forgery (it's a pirate ship) and found out about links to a criminal organization of pirates. Nic was aghast at this and found that much of the money the company had was being embezzled for the benefit of the owners and laundered through this gang, losing his loyalty. He thinks of reporting it, but the Imperials are overworked already with Zhodani agitators and Vargr raids, he doubts they would help, and Efaties don't like going to the cops anyway. Efate has so little effective law that going to the cops or courts is less useful then talking to a wall. A waste of time at best. Anyway one of the gang noticed the breakthrough and had to decide what to do, dropping a dead body on the Highport just might draw more attention then is good so, instead, tried a little bribery. Nic didn't like it but felt betrayed by his company, needed the money, and wasn't so stupid as to not know that it was blood money or a bloody blade. He took the deal learning to conceal his thoughts and how to work with the underworld and maybe gained a sort of contact(PC) in the less than honest world. Nic flees Efate, Third Career Term:
Nicholas is increasingly disappointed in how his life is going. His eyes are opened to the rampant corruption of Efate, but he fears the consequences of legal involvement. He sees more Imperial intervention as needed to get this under control, and starts talking about it casually in bars he is attending more often. One day at a bar the Holoscreen lights up with an emergency alert. The Children of Efate terrorist group has seized some armed ships and is causing widespread riots, including on the Space Station. At this time one of the men that was listening to Nic spout off, pulls a knife and screams, "All traitors and collaborators must die! Free Efate!" Miraculously, the Highport grav fails, and Nic has a fighting chance at this terrorist, as a brawl flares across the bar. He, quite unintentionally, kills the guy. Uncharacteristically, he thinks quickly, and ducks into the back room and transmits the bar's security records to a no delete Imperial database. He then leads some hunted pro-empire people to an airlock. A battered Imperial Navy vessel, shows up and a Naval Petty Officer, Lincoln "Linc" Forgrave, leads a team to assist the refugees. On the way to Regina, Nic and Linc strike up a friendship. Nic at Regina:
Nic doesn't like Regina but is afraid to return to Efate any time soon. The security Records clear him of any wrongdoing, clear self-defense. Imperial Security soon smashes the Children of Efate but family vendetta means more than any law on Efate. Nic finds a master of Sayokan, an ancient Turkish marital art, and trains in it for any future trouble. He does temp work as tech or engineer for a while but looks for a different future. Nic gets good news from Efate while in exile on Regina:
Message from MOM: Hi Nic! We are all doing well here, most of the hullaballoo has blown over. Great news for you. You know my Aunties relation that Beckett guy? He's connected and put in a good word for you because of what you did in saving people from those awful terrorists. You're getting an Official Emperor's Thanks for Excellent Loyalty to the Empire by a Citizen. Quite the mouthful, isn't it? It's not a knighthood or anything like it, not one of the more prestige's awards but some nobleman representing an Imperial Knight will give it to you? That's something. Oh and it comes with a lifetime Traveller's Aid Society full membership. That's really useful. Well hope that helps, I know it's been rough being so far from home. See you soon, I hope. Love, MOM. Fourth Career Term:
Nic joins a free trader crew, serves in menial capacity, bartending, janitor, minor repairs. He was barely accepted, mostly doing to a friend's influence. Makes a new friend that might do a bit of a favor now and then. Fifth Career Term:
Despite the problems Nic stays aboard the free trader, finding love. He learns how to use and repair sensors in detail. Late in term he is reluctantly allowed by the captain to be trained as an Astrogator. The love ends, badly with repercussions. Possible meeting with Ma's Wife-Pending Approvals:
Galya is involved with TAS or Imperial offices to do administrative tasks for his Nic's award. So early in his third term, she need to send a great deal of correspondence to Regina from Efate to Nic, in the process they become friends by mail. This goes on for years and she introduces by mail Nic to her sister, on the Free Trader and that is how Nic gets the job. On rare occasions the Free Trader arrives on Efate and her Galya sees her sister and Nic her friend. Later she meets and marries Mal, and he joins in this friendship ring. |
