Might be a matter of dealing with the situation tactically (escape room) vs. unraveling the mystery (what's the data & what does it mean).
If I had to reach... Argent is installed at several corps and is responsible for the price fixing and embezzlement after the AI learned it from watching humans, etc...
I'll do whatever I can come up with, weapons or not (1d6+1 laser) isn't game breaking.
I think it might be too "sandbox" and we all have our own ideas about how to start.
Maybe it's coincidence and we're all just distracted with RL.

Thanks for the feedback. This is based on a published scenario, and while it's modified, the core of the situation exists in the stock scenario pretty much unchanged. The module sort of assumes the first thing the party is going to do is go get their weapons back, and you all seem hesitant to do that. Which is fine, I can ad-lib. I just don't want people to feel like it's a hopeless situation or that they're powerless to affect the situation. BTW, I don't plan on making a habit of removing weapons from the party when they're necessary.
Oren "Tanta" Knightgale |
Going for the weapons is the most logical thing to do first... agreed!
But, considering we're dealing with a security focused AI... it's difficult to think it's not a honey-pot/honey-trap.
I would actually rank that as more risky than getting through without the weapons (silly as that may seem).
That's just my imagination playing head games.

Yeah, there's a lot of holes in this scenario that the designers didn't catch. I think I'm going to have to wing it a bit to get this to move along; otherwise we'll be stuck running 2 hours worth of in-game events for the next 4 months.

Is there minimum range for sniper weapons? Is there someplace/something Oren can set up on (besides the floor)?
Can she just drop to the floor, aim and fire?

Waiting on direction here, before I can post an action...
Now, I'm imagining mag-stocks... attaching to a vertical surface. Very cool!
rando1000 |
No minimum range. Your best location without walking past one of the robots is to stay in the hallway where you are. However, since you have the surprise round, you could behind the couches on map-East without AOO. That's soft cover, but it would give you a +4 to AC until it was destroyed.

Thanks, that's awesome! Not sure if action economy allows her to attack.

@rando1000, hope you don't mind my asking this here...
I was wondering about people's thoughts regarding (RPG in general, not specific to this adventure)... Rules/Mechanics heavy vs light systems.
I suppose mechanics vs. theatre of the mind?
Specifically, does the possibility of 1-20 on a role make the outcomes less predictable and therefore the character more difficult to RP as imagined?
Alternatively, as example: what if a Wizard's melee base attack was 1 + 1d20 while a Fighter's was 9 + 1d12?
I can start a Discord server is the conversation takes off.
Oren "Tanta" Knightgale |
Or if it doesn't!
Hope everyone had a safe and enjoyable weekend!
Here is the Discord invite, if you feel like chatting. No expectation or pressure.
Very informal chat around topics like roll-vs-role-play and possible monetization (capitalist pig, I admit it!).
All that I ask is pretty much commonsensical... respect others, their experiences, struggles and ideas.

I'm a big fan of d20. I've played a few different systems, and it has a pretty reasonable number of unbelievable crap rolls in my experience.
Those can be mitigated by having a reasonable GM who either puts something in place to overcome them or just GM fiat handwaves rolls someone should obviously make. I try to be that GM because I know that crap rolls DO happen. Sometimes modules make DCs higher than really necessary because the designer assumes a certain level of character optimization that's not real. But even then, the rule of 15 (no crucial roll should require higher than a natural 15) plus the ability to take 10 and take 20 should handle it most of the time.
Rules-light games come with a different set of problems. You have to really trust your GM, who's really more of a literal referee. "Can I do this thing?" No idea. The rules just give me a few guidelines to judge what you can and can't do.

Apologies for zoning the site this weekend. I was running around doing stuff related to celebrating my nation's revolution against JonGarrett's people.
Viva Zapata!
Grumble grumble... wrong revolution!
But, speaking of The American Revolution and Wimbledon...
Some network thought it would be cute to spell WIMBLEDON with the first few characters blue and the rest alternating red & white.
Making it look like the Ámerican Flag.
I personally thought it was rude and disrespectful to Queen & Country. If I were in charge, heads would have rolled.
I'm not even British.

Yeah, agreed. Weak sauce.

I dare any of you to do worse than I did!
Oren "Tanta" Knightgale |
holy crap no. I'm calling bs on the dice.
Thanks, Rando! Save some "sniper" pride... LOL.
In case any mathematicians get high-brow ideas, yes and of course I've been rolling d20 in other games on the site. So, technically it's not snake-eyes on a d20.
Still sucks from a single character perspective though.

You guys ever try these dudes?
Or these guys...
Actually found several others (have I been under some rock?!)... added a VTT channel to the discord I created in case anyone cares to kibbitz or kvetch!

Keep meaning to comment but forgetting!
I personally play on Saturdays in a campaign that runs Forge, and italways a ton of fun. Lots of interesting effects you can get on there to make games run simpler or just be more enjoyable.
What was the discord for, exsctly? I'm not really the type to join whatever ticks my fancy, the only ones I'm in are for a superhero-oriented RPG forum and thr campaign I'm in.

My Discord? Exactly the title... "RPG Talk: express yourself" I guess just topics myself or someone else might have... It's pretty much brand new (not too noisy) and only invited a handful of people so far from my games here.
A couple of guys from another campaign stopped in earlier.
You can feel free to join and leave if you don't like it. I will not be offended.

Hey folks, starting the 27th I'l[l be camping until August 1st and will have little to no signal. Please bot me as necessary.

I'd been using it previously, but they would work just as well...little hard to say with hive minds.

I'd love to give Taylor a bit of shore-leave adventure next go about too, even if that's not his focus as a character.
The next adventure I'd planned was entirely onboard ship, but it's relatively short. Following that, there will be some planet-side exploration that will allow some R&R for the entire crew. Taylor can make his way into either or both adventures.
rando1000 |
How are we doing at leveling up? I've got the basis of the next adventure ready, but I don't want to throw you in before you're prepared.
Also, I guess we need to talk ship improvements. With leveling up comes increase to Tier 4, which amounts to 20 BP worth of improvements. Tier 4 would normally also allow you +20 HP, but it seems I started you with too many for a Destroyer frame, so you're basically even up for that already.
Your individual CHARACTERS may or may not have much control over the improvements, but I want the PLAYERS to have some.
Rudo "the Saint" Clausius |
Haven't leveled yet, will do tonight. Which character are you thinking for me? Oren or Rudo?
I'm not sure how much 20BP gets one. I'm for shields and speed.
rando1000 |
Oren or Rudo?
Rudo will definitely make an appearance, though depending on how things go, Oren might show up at some point.
I'm for shields and speed.
So your current shields are Light 60 (meaning they soak 60 damage total, not accounting for engineering repairs). They use 20 PCU in power.
For another 2 BP, you could make them Light 70/25 PCU. For another 4 BP total, you could make them Light 80/30 PCU. You have another 40 or so PCU from your Power Core that's not being used before you'll need to upgrade it.As far as speed, you have L6 thrusters, Speed 6 (hexes)/+1 Piloting/80 PCU. For another 2, you could make them Speed 8/+0 Piloting/100 PCU.
So if you were to take L8 thrusters and Light 80 shields, it would cost you 6 of 20, but it would bring you within 10-20 of maxing out your Power Core.
Rudo "the Saint" Clausius |
So... How do you upgrade PCU?
I like sensors, early warning... perception is good.
You lost piloting is you go faster, do you keep the +1 pilot if you choose to only go 6?
rando1000 |
So... How do you upgrade PCU?
You're probably not there yet, but the same way. You pay a certain amount of BP and get a new Power Core. I'm going to require reasonable downtime for some upgrades though. Getting a new Power Core essentially represents having your engine removed and a new one put in; ships are down for months with that sort of activity, so it probably won't happen in game for at least a couple more adventures.
You lost piloting is you go faster, do you keep the +1 pilot if you choose to only go 6?
Yeah, that's the way the engines break down. Basically, the faster you go in a category, the less of a bonus you get. Essentially to mirror the ship or the pilot not being able to react quite as fast.
Of all the things in the starship system, thrusters are pretty vanilla. Each size category has one type (yours is L, since Destroyers are size Large) and variable speeds. So you have L4, L6 (where you're at), L8, and L10. The good news is, at least with L, you never go minus. So going from a L6 (+1) to an L8 (+0) is the only loss you're going to take. And honestly, Taylor had ZERO problem doing pretty much exactly what he wanted with the ship last combat, so that +1 is probably not very crucial at all.

All good!
Should be ready tomorrow morning! Both characters.Rudo "the Saint" Clausius |
Think I'm up to date, same links should show 4th Level, now.
I do not however think I ever locked down languages for either character. How does that work?
rando1000 |
I do not however think I ever locked down languages for either character. How does that work?
Well, your native language could be any human language; in addition to regular earth languages, there's Terran, which is basically "common" and probably dialects for various colonies (for example, there might be a Centauri dialect of Terran). Then you've got Dokka (Dr Yusil's native tongue), D'naki (the language of your cold-war enemies, the D'naki Empire, who Clausius has done battle with in the past), Samsaran, and Vesk (who are earth native lizards). I think I've mostly covered the bases there.
Rudo "the Saint" Clausius |
Base = Common
Race = may or may not have one, unless you count English, French, German, etc... as "racial" languages. Otherwise Terran's have it blank. I took the blank.
Homeworld = Terran
Then for each Culture pip, you get to choose one.
Thanks, that helped!

We had a discussion about High Gravity Worlds, at one point, and the idea came up that a Super-earth would be High Gravity due to the increase in mass.
I've done some reading, evidently this isn't necessarily the case. It seems that gravity on the planet's surface is also reliant upon the radius, because the further from the center of gravity (the planetary core), the less the pull of gravity. So it is perfectly possible to have a giant Earthlike planet with gravity very similar to Earth's.
The example given was a planet with 8x the mass and 2.83x the surface area would have a 1g gravity.
Interestingly, the most common gravity we've found on planets we've deemed potentially habitable is in the 1.4g area, across mass levels.
