You have 3000 total. So you can't do TOO much in that area, but there may be some items. Just remember tech only. If it can't reasonably be skinned as tech, it can't be purchased. Psionicists (aka casters) can craft "Psionic" items, but they're rare and not generally for sale.
rando1000 |
Getting more specific, it looks like you can afford a Mk I Synaptic Accelerator (straight tech) or a Mk I Synergizing Symbiote (biotech) which will give you a +2 for 1400. However, that leaves you with only 1600 left. You do get the gear I'm giving everyone (uniform, laser pistol, other department appropriate gear) and mission related gear (rebreather masks for unsafe atmospheres, titanium line and grapple guns, etc) so that's fine, but there won't be tons of extra cash floating your way.
So it's kind of your choice if the stat upgrade is worth the expenditure or if you'd rather have some other item (like better armor) instead.
Uret Jet |
I got the Mk1s for both Yusil and Young, myself. For Yusil I've picked up various bits of equipment I felt would be appropriate and useful for her, though I couldn't think of much else.

To avoid long waits as we go through multiple "phases" of starship combat, I've come up with a slightly modified posting system that (I hope) will both work and make things move a little faster.
Here's how it goes.
1. I will roll Initiative (Opposed piloting checks) for both sides. IF it will benefit the party, I will use one of the three uses of the ship's tetranode computer to add +1 to that check (leaving two remaining uses).
2. The captain will announce "Battle Stations." This is basically code for "unless I give a very specific order, do what you think is best at your station." If the captain gives a specific order (and I'll try to limit this so you have autonomy), you are free to interpret it with whatever action you think will best accomplish it.
3. The initiative losers will complete all their actions except gunnery. If the loser is the NPC ship, I'll announce their actions here. If the loser is the PC ship, see 5/6 below.
4. Then the winner will complete all actions including gunnery. If at the end of the winner's actions, the loser is still in a place to use gunnery, they may fire their weapons.
5. It doesn't matter what order you post your actions in (with the exception of loser's gunner). If your action buffs someone else's action or gives them some other sort of benefit, but you want to affect a previous poster's action, you can phrase it as happening simultaneously, eg "As character X does his action, I do action Y to assist." If your action is successful, I'll have it affect the events.
6. I will describe the effects of the winner's actions and the loser's gunnery action if relevant.
Basically, the idea is: Initiative is determined as each round starts, no one except gunner has to wait on anyone, and even then only if you're the initiative loser.
I'm hoping this will help things flow well, but if it screws stuff up, we can look at shifting back to more traditional phases.
Rudo "the Saint" Clausius |
I wasn't much familiar or enamored with the standard system, so... I'm in!
rando1000 |
Yeah. I'm hesitant to tell you not to roll for minor actions, because it's nice to have the die roll already there if it's needed, rather than waiting for a second post later. That said, Taylor could almost have pulled up to that container in his sleep, and I fear seeing good rolls like that now will result in crappy rolls when needed. Not the way dice work, I know. But.
Uret Jet |
Paranoia is a key feature of dice mechanics I've learned.
Rudo "the Saint" Clausius |
Damn the torpedoes?
I'm not sure what to roll or what modifiers I'd have.
I'm assuming the big choice is interceptor or transport?
rando1000 |
Your bonus is: 1d20 + Dex Bonus + BAB (or piloting ranks, whichever's greater). So your attack bonus is PROBABLY the same as your ranged attack bonus.
You can use a +1 from the computer if you want (it provides 3 +1 bonuses per round, only one has been used). You also get your bonus from your downtime activity for 3 rounds, so you would get an additional +1 from that.
You can choose to fire TWO weapons if you want (called FIRE AT WILL) but you take a -4 on each.
From your station on the bridge, you can fire any of the ship's weapons BUT: a) Patel's in the heavy laser turret, so she'll fire that one, and b) nothing is in your port or starboard arcs, so that really leaves you with a choice of Twin Laser Cannon (5d8) and Tactical Nuke (also 5d8, but you only have 5 on board) OR BOTH at -4 each.
Rudo "the Saint" Clausius |
Can Patel also target the Transport? I can't seem to find the map... Although I did see your description of the icons.
rando1000 |
The map is under Janessa's post, but here's a re-link:
You're the blue icon, and you've moved three hexes back since the map was posted.
Yes, you're Patel's boss, just post an order to her when you post and she'll target what you say. Otherwise she'll target as she thinks best.

Interceptor 21 to hit is a miss?

Interceptor 21 to hit is a miss?
I think the rolls changed when I was editing the post. Pretty sure it was a 11 first and a 10 second. If not and I read it wrong, well, benefits of an aging GM I suppose.
Rudo "the Saint" Clausius |
As far as Rudo knows, based on his two tours... Do the D'naki commandeer ships. Or are there non D'naki in the interceptors?
Surprisingly, I have Profession Untrained as the only skill roll possible.
rando1000 |
D'Naki destroy enemy ships, almost exclusively, though they might raid them first for anything of value. D'Naki interceptors however, are not in short supply, as a few forward bases were captured during the war. Rudo would also know that Plasma weapons would be stock on D'Naki interceptors. That's a bunch of info for no roll, but Rudo (and others in the crew) have history with D'Naki, so it's not a stretch you would know these things.
Rudo "the Saint" Clausius |
Are these interceptors using plasma (cannons)? Perhaps I missed the descriptive regarding their weapons.
Rudo "the Saint" Clausius |
I guess the Captain told the interceptors to back of or the bullets (50 mm) would... So, not plasma.
Uret Jet |
Sounds like pirates using stolen interceptors to me, then.
Rudo "the Saint" Clausius |
OK, I'll just ask... what's the 3 round +1 thing, again? I'm searching, but it escapes me.
And... Ohhh, we were a hair's breadth away from a Fire at Will round :)
rando1000 |
Sorry. There's a set of "Downtime" rules that I'm very loosely interpreting that gives bonuses for things people did the previous day in their downtime. Essentially, everyone (PCs only) except Arkady (who got a different benefit) gets a +1 morale bonus on one chosen type of roll for their first 3 rounds in this encounter. So for you, that probably breaks down to +1 gunnery. So the 17 you just rolled is really an 18. Which might well make a difference.
Yeah, you definitely chose properly. With Fire at Will (-4), that would have pretty certainly been a miss. Of course, your other roll could have been a nat 20, but who knows.

Got it! Added!

Ironically enough I'm trying to play Rudo as "cool as a cucumber" with maximum forcefulness when needed.
But, the alias/profile pic I chose makes him seem angry with every post... please understand that is simply not the case.
For Heaven's sake he just admitted to yoga techniques with his team :) LOL.
@Rando, if this is a sort of prologue... can I add +2 Dex item? I'm starting to understand exactly what would help him mechanically.
Uret Jet |
Holding off for the map update, got a post in my head though.

Arigato!
I will however take it, after this encounter. I wasn't looking for an edge here... just realized how important it was for melee, range and gunnery.
I had not realized he'd be a gunner as head of security. I'd only imagined him the ground/boarding. But, I like this better!
rando1000 |
Perhaps they will respond better to someone they see or feel as less threatening, Sir. If Knightgale isn't sleeping through this... Clausius lurches with the impact.
...you'd just need to tell her what she can offer.
Ensign Young, can you maintain this relative position? Let's see if they fancy a game of - I'm not touching you...
I think what I'll do is allow it this time, with three caviats: 1) It can only even possibly work if they agree to discuss the situation.
2) It will take two more rounds in order to get the communication set up.3) Generally, Outside of RP scenarios like the party, my goal is to have a player being one or the other of their characters at a time. They're there to make sure players aren't sitting around, not to give extra actions to players in a given scene. My point being, keep this tactic to a minimum.
Rudo "the Saint" Clausius |
My point being, keep this tactic to a minimum.
Understood, was just bringing in another ship personnel skillset... you can bot her if you'd like. I don't mind.
In 2 round it all might be moot, anyways!
I was already feeling bossy (self-conscious) just asking the captain the question about taking vs. destroying and asking Ensign Young to maintain position.
Trying to influence the scene as a PC, not manipulate it (in any negative/limelight fashion).

No, it's fine, you can post for her, in two more rounds. I'm just asking for moderation with the technique. I'm thinking of it as a TV series. Something like this might well happen in ONE spaceship combat, and it would be a cool thing. But it wouldn't happen in EVERY spaceship combat in the season.

You got it!
rando1000 |
@Rudo/Oren - Go ahead and have Oren break in now with her attempt at diplomacy, rather than in another round. The dice have not gone anywhere near well for the opposition, and you guys have used some pretty good tactics, so the morale in the transport is probably pretty low right now. Probably a good time to broker a ceasefire.
Oren "Tanta" Knightgale |
Could the OSF Auspicious have been taken by this pirate? Relative to our vessel, how was it armed?
Can Oren switch to an internal private ship-only channel?
rando1000 |
OSM Auspicious. Auspicious was a merchant vessel, not part of the Space Force. A Piloting check could determine the armament common with such vessels. Oren and Young would both have a good chance of knowing.
Legion, Captain Cooper, and Lt. Vassally-Simmons (Engineer) could also probably make a good guess, being, respectively, two command officers and an engineer.
Lt. Williams at Science station could probably get the answer from the databanks relatively quickly as well.
Yes, Oren could switch to internal comms.
Oren "Tanta" Knightgale |
OSM Auspicious.
OSF vs. OSM... when I was typing and remembering, I'd thought my eyes/memory might have played a trick on me. I wondered if it was different but didn't look it up a second time. LOL.
Oren "Tanta" Knightgale |
Well, that sucked! A freakin' 5?! Maybe plausibility might lend credence.
I guess the fun is in the recovery!
Oren "Tanta" Knightgale |
Have we confirmed that the container is from the OSM Auspicious? Bill of Lading, Manifest, etc...
It sounds like you're telling us it is.
Assuming the OSM Auspicious is a Mariner Class vessel.
Arkady Vassally-Simmons |
How would we scan the container for signs of weapons damage (scaring and such would be obvious, but radiation from weapons bursts and the like could be a thing too) so we can say 'Hey, that was definitely lost when the ship was hit by weapons fire and is no longer salvage but evidence'?

If we know/can link the container (serial number) to the OSM Auspicious, it's OSM property and not salvage, period.
Occupational hazard... supply chain and logistics :)
Even today every container has a serial number and seal (to be broken at destination) and is identified on a shipping manifest. Now, they're even fancy and have RF transmitter.
I'm not saying that's exactly what's going on here, but there should be some analogous method. Or maybe there isn't. Up to rando! This is fantasy, baby!

Roll computers on the gameplay forum, or I can have Lt. Williams do it.
Oren "Tanta" Knightgale |
Assuming after rolls, we're waiting for the captain?
Uret Jet |
We free to use either character for downtime?
Rudo "the Saint" Clausius |
We free to use either character for downtime?
I think unless he tells us the "cast" for the encounter (episode, extending the TV show analogy)... we are free to use either or both.
The only monkey-wrench in that is if we get surprised in Drift Space, but I think he could "cast" the encounter then as well.
I happen to just post for Rudo (and not Oren) because I didn't want them to be twinsies. Make it look/feel like they are individual or controlled by different players.
It's part of my schizoid or maybe it will develop :)
