I hope this works out, I think it's my fave format EVER for PbP.

It's a great idea and hook... And I have two humans (likely suspects) but I can't think of s damn thing.
rando1000 |
If you can't think of anything you want to RP right now, that's fine. Just stating whatever you're doing in your downtime for the duration will be okay. Even that's not required, it's just an opportunity to give you some RP and make the PCs and NPCs pop a little more.

I just meant with the Doctor's visit... Downtime, coming up.
Actually, would the Doctor be administering the Upgrade/Implant for +2 Dex?
rando1000 |
Downtime benefits:
Dr. Yusil used 1 Downtime activity to install an implant, and a second to treat patients. I'm awarding a reroll in Medicine.
Engineer Vassally-Simmons used all downtime to maintain her experimental weapon. I'm awarding +1 to Hit and Damage with the weapon for the first 3 attacks.
Lt. Clausius used 1 Downtime activity to have an implant installed, and a second to Lounge. I'm awarding a +1 Morale Bonus on up to 3 Saving Throws.
Commander Legion used all his Downtime to Work Out. I'm awarding a reroll on both Acrobatics and Athletics.
Ensign Knightgale used her Downtime for personal interaction and Work Out. She probably won't end up needing it since she'll only appear briefly in this scene, but I'm awarding a +1 morale bonus to the skill of her choice and a reroll to Athletics.
Other PCs will not appear in this scene, but great RP on their behalf nonetheless.

It's planetside (my verbal intention was IN the marsh, near the edge). Whether crashed or landed, you'll have to find out.

That was my leaning or first understanding... Then I thought... Space. Could it mean something else?
Too freaking open minded for my own good. Damn right-brain.

I know your equipment changed to get the upgrade, did you end up getting additional armor as well? If so, you'll be fine as all armor is well-sealed, but if you're relying on your uniform (which provides AC bonus but nothing environmental), yes, you'll probably want the waders.

What actually would be apropriate for the enviornment? There is an entry called "Environmental Clothing", though it doesn't seemed geared toward something like a marsh as per vanilla.
Edit: Oh, and what's the local lighting level right now? Is it overcast, or is the sun very bright? It matters due to her Light Blindness.
Rudo "the Saint" Clausius |
So I don't say anything in-game that starts a huge debate... and don't want to bet scenario-breaking.
What's the expectation of personal communication units? Range says planet-wide (not system). So they require infrastructure or are they peer to peer (self contained)?
Would one need to know frequency or channel?
Could we try to hail survivors, even if Auspicious ship communication is down?

Okay, you'll be fine with the water then.

They're only peer to peer short range, but with your ship in orbit (presumed) they're planet-wide. I'll also allow planet-wide on any system that has an open communication network. That's how I'm running it.
As far as the Auspicious, they'd have to know your ship was there and join its network, and since that network would be protected, they probably wouldn't get in very easy. So no.
rando1000 |

The closest thing in Environmental Clothing would be Cold Climate clothing, since if your legs got soggy and you had nothing to keep you warm, you could pretty quickly develop hypothermia. But technically on this planet I'd just say if you're wearing a jacket and something to keep your feet and legs from getting soggy you'll be fine.
Edit: Oh, and what's the local lighting level right now? Is it overcast, or is the sun very bright? It matters due to her Light Blindness.
We'll say overcast. Even if the clouds part, once you're under all those trees you'll have the equivalent of overcast at best.

Archetype rules had me confused a bit...
Was going to drop Powered Armor Jockey, then realized it only really cost me the 6th level Vanguard Discipline.
I'm guessing we're not planning on going past Level 8 or so, if we get that high. Even if we do... doesn't look like I'm losing much.

Yeah, I think you're in the clear on that one. I plan on going for a while, but these characters are on more of a human level (vs superheroes), so advancement will be nice and slow.

OK.
But, I think I have to drop it anyways as I need Powered Armor Proficiency is takes a feat (not sure how I missed that)... and as Powered Armor doesn't seem to be a central theme, doesn't seem worth the diversion.
I'll get a the hang of it sooner or later!
I do want to make him a bit special... does anyone have the Starwright archetype? If not, with @rando1000's permission I'll take that.
It doesn't kick in until Level 6. Easily works into his origin background and fits thematically with the Vanguard class.

We'll have to change where they're based out of, but the Starforger's Guild could be a real enough thing. Sure, I'll allow it.

I was thinking it could be related to the same incident where he became death-touched.
I was actually thinking it's where as a child, he "met" a badly wounded Desna (cold central US north)... and offered her shelter. The attacker big bad wolf (pick destroyer deity of choice) caught up to her/them... and they were saved by Desnan allies/forces.
In a non-magic setting, they could have been starfarers and starknights, etc... Starwrights?
Styx - Come Sail Away <<< Link
His defining moment and why he joined the Orion Space Force (when old enough).
...A gathering of angels
Appeared above my head
They sang to me this song of hope
And this is what they said
They said, come sail away, come sail away
Come sail away with me (lads)
Come sail away, come sail away
Come sail away with me
Come sail away, come sail away
Come sail away with me (baby)
Come sail away, come sail away
Come sail away with me
I thought that they were angels
But to my surprise
We climbed aboard their starship
We headed for the skies...

It could all be tied in... death touched (bad guy), vanguard & starwright (Desna & co). His discipline give +2 Mechanic which ties in nicely with Starwright without stepping on any Mechanic-type toes. Kinda reminds me of an Armiger.
Rudo "the Saint" Clausius |
Rando might say otherwise, but as far as I'm aware there's no actual magic within this setting. Meeting a 'diety' is a bit on the 'highly magical' side of things.
I'm saying Desna as in the concept of, representation of, avatar of Desna.
Could be an powerful alien power-armored psychic warrior queen/princess who crash landed.
I'm not trying (now do I want to) introduce "magic" into this.
rando1000 |
Yes, conceptually a high level Psionic character could appear as a goddess to a human. There *might* even be an extra-dimensional element to it, though you're not particularly knowledgeable about such things.
But a character is able to believe whatever he wants about something, as long as I'm free to bind that to the reality of the campaign. Some people might think Rudo weird for believing that, but then some people think individuals are weird for being athiests, or Jews, or Hindus, or any religion (or lack thereof) on our world. As long as Rudo can do the job, Space Force will let him have whatever beliefs he wants, and hey, he does have some unusual abilities; who's to say?
Rudo "the Saint" Clausius |

Firstly, thank you for calling me on the magic thing... I wanted to make sure I wasn't crossing any lines.
I'm assuming we're in an alternate reality/future from of our current world, so religion exists (faith, idea of angels) as we know it today. Just not magic as in wizards, warlocks, witches (why is it always W's?) or unicorns and faeries.
I'm saying (much like the lyrics) young Rudo encountered this woman-girl who he was able to shelter (a tent, cave he knew of, some rations he may have had for camping or a first aid kit). Survival stuff his family might have taught him.
She could have crashed here (in a ship or power armor) and been badly wounded or just exhausted from the battle.
He doesn't know what to make of her except she needs help and being the gallant, he does what he can.
Eventually, the enemy comes... some alien psychic uber death-lord, just exuding negative/psychic/death energy. Rudo is stupid enough to intervene, maybe she's unconscious.
He gets blown away marked, death-touched per the theme.
Cavalry arrives... Starknights and Starwrights or some sort from her world/planet. Rudo thinks they must be angels.
They fight off or contain the big bad. Reclaim their queen/princess.
She thanks Rudo and perhaps grants him (psychically) the entropy abilities he later manifests. Desna (just her name) gives him a peck and some thankful words about being her gallant, guardian, protector.
Setting him on the path to becomes a Vaguard and Starwright (however that happens in the future). He has the potential.
That's when he sees their starships and realized the wonders that await out there.
OSF, here Rudo comes!

I used a Perception check, probably should have been a Survival check.
I didn't realize we would need that type of gear (should have) and also, I like the idea of Rudo using what's indigenous. Resourceful.
But, I'll take the Resolve Point deal. Thanks!

It's hard to anticipate everything you might need, so generally, I'll accept a Resolve swap for something simple like a grapple and cable, a thermal blanket, or a rain poncho.

Do we know the size of the Auspicious crew or the names of the primary officers? What it was carrying?
Also, it's bigger than our ship... Does it have a shuttle?
rando1000 |

You don't have a full cargo manifest, unfortunately. The crew of a vessel like this is relatively small: a commander, three pilots, an engineer, and about 10 workers to help with loading and offloading.
You were probably given a list of the command crew, but the loaders would be assigned at the last minute. You can access that list by linking your comm to the Guangzhou's computer.
Also, it's bigger than our ship... Does it have a shuttle?
It probably has escape pods only, not a proper shuttle per se. It would take a Pilot check to get a protocol for their use, but Guangzhou detected no secondary emergency signals on the planet, so it's unlikely the escape pods were launched, or you probably would have found some in orbit.
Rudo "the Saint" Clausius |
Thank you for the explanation. Helps.
...there is little unexpected about the scene.
That said, no one is there to greet you, nor seems to have noticed your presence, save some rather annoying insects that fly in small swarms here and there above the marsh.
We're seeing this from the outside? We haven't actually entered the ship, yeah?

I was leaving that up to the science-y types. I really don't know what sorts of sensors we have or could have.
Just sounded like something Rudo'd say or want to know.

By way of explanation... "What's wrong with this guy, that stuff doesn't exist in the game."
Thinking of future, space, high tech... sometimes I assume thinks are possible. Or "imagine" they are.
My logic: if we can sense life forms/life signs, what ever or how ever that's done, motion sensors (echo-location) and thermal imaging isn't a huge stretch.
Also, you mentioned a drone. Reminded me of "ISR" in SEAL Team (TV Show), where the drone would hover over the area and relay images/video. Someone on the ground or at base would monitor.
Was more theatre of the mind. Apologies for any confusion.

Speaking of "terms"... seems I've neglected languages.
I've not done a great job defining these. Shameful considering my background in linguistics.
Terran, would be United Earth's primary language.
All normal Earth languages still exist.
Vesk is the language of these Terran lizard people.
Spacerchat would be a pidgin commonly used by haulers, pirates, and interplanetary traders.
Helmál is the language of the Dokka race.
Voomiki is the language of the Voom (rodent-like aliens).
Samsari is the language of the Samsarans.
D'naki is the language of the D'naki Empire, who is currently in a state of cold war with the Orion Concord.
Uret Jet |
Ilrani in particular speaks both what humans call "Dokkask" (Helmál is difficult to pronounce), as well as a regional dialect called Suðrn. She's also taken Terran, Vesk, Samsari, and D'naki. Not that you need to feel any need to fill knowledge gaps, of course.
Taylor himself would speak Terran and Duster, the Martian dialect. Probably a pidgin between English, Chinese, Indian, and whoever else colonized Mars first.
rando1000 |
By way of explanation... "What's wrong with this guy, that stuff doesn't exist in the game."
Not a worry. In a game where a lot of things are new to players, and in a homebrew setting, some assumptions will be made.
Thinking of future, space, high tech... sometimes I assume thinks are possible. Or "imagine" they are.
My logic: if we can sense life forms/life signs, what ever or how ever that's done, motion sensors (echo-location) and thermal imaging isn't a huge stretch.
It is definitely possible, the question is whether a) you have the equipment to do it, and b) anyone was actively checking it. I'm contemplating whether the multicomps the science officers have would detect normal life signs at this range.
Even if that's the case, though, in this instance, it wouldn't have done much good. There are two reasons for this, but haven't really uncovered enough information yet to know them. Investigation of the creatures will answer some questions.
Also, you mentioned a drone. Reminded me of "ISR" in SEAL Team (TV Show), where the drone would hover over the area and relay images/video. Someone on the ground or at base would monitor.
Also something you could do, but it would require requisitioning a drone and someone to monitor it. For a mission like this, where command was not really expecting combat, that requisition would probably be denied.
But if you're going into a situation where you think organized, military style combat is likely, the Captain would probably send in a Security team with more of your personnel, and you could have one of them perform that function.rando1000 |
