Firstly, may I begin by saying...AHHHH I'm really nervous! I've joined one PBP game and I'm having a blast, but I am a forever DM at heart, and I want to try my hand at it.

My qualifications:
I've been DMing irl and in Roll20 games for about 20 years. Most of my experience is with 5e and PF1E, but I have run a game of 2E irl (this same campaign, in fact) and am familiar, if not an expert, on how it works. I am a teacher, and run my school's TTRPG club, and am currently running 3 irl campaigns...yes, I might have an addiction.

I need players who will be patient with me if I make mistakes. I've read through "Painlord's Guide to PbP GMing: Make Your World a Better Place" but I've never actually juggled combat and all that in PBP so I may be a little sloppy until I find my stride. I plan to post at least once a day, and will be able to chime in to answer questions more often than that.

Brand new PF2E players welcome! New PBP players also welcome!

Character Expectations:

First and foremost, I am hoping to get people who can consistently post once a day, and who are committed to sticking around for the long haul of the AP. In combat, I intend to give each round 24 hours and post for anyone who does not post within that window. I am far more interested in roleplaying and interesting characters than amazing builds. I am hoping to get 6-7 people to start, in case of folks disappearing. No evil characters. Language and violence are fine to go ham with, keeping it PG-13 for sexual content though. Here is the players guide for the AP. Any official ancestry / background / class is fine, just no third party sources. Starting out as level 1 characters. 15g for starting equipment.

If you'd like to play, post below with the character you want to play! I'll leave recruitment open until March 5, 2022, and see where things stand. If you have any questions please feel free to ask them, I might be overlooking something.

Hi.

This could be the perfect time to start with 2e.

I'd be interested! I got an idea for a cleric brewing.

Hello, Fern! Welcome!

I'm gonna throw this guy in there: Joran

He was in a game a while back and he made it to 20 posts before the DM vanished. :P (It happens. What are you gonna do, right?) *shrugs*

Anyway, I will say I haven't played enough of PF2 to know the rules very well but I do know them somewhat. And I'll confess the word somewhat may very well be a bit of a stretch so don't quote me on that. ;P

Actually, I do have a question for you DM Fern!

I am considering the Gunslinger as my class and the "Out-Of-Towner" for my Background. The character would've been adopted by dwarves, learned about gunpowder from them, and be a human who fights with a clan dagger using the "Way of the Drifter" style.

If you're against that, I'll tweak it back to the cleric, but I really would like to give gunslinger a twirl.

Welcome to the boards, DM F! I'm undecided re submitting--will wait to see what other submissions look like.

I had a suggestion for you: although your online gaming experience is solid, running a game via PbP (as you may have noticed from Painlord's guide) can have some unexpected aspects. I suggest that before you commit to even the first part of an AP, you run something more bounded to get the hang of it. The Fall of Plaguestone, or something like that, would be a reasonable choice. The other thing you could try is to get a Pathfinder Society scenario that could be adapted to lead into the beginning of Age of Ashes (obviously not running it in Society play)--pick your party, run them through that, and if this seems like something you'd like to do you can continue into AoA without a break. OTOH, if you're having unanticipated trouble with it, you can bow out at the break. Also, if you and any of your players have a mismatch in play styles and expectations, they can step out at the break and be replaced.

Just a thought, since I've seen many people come in as you have, try to run an AP, and flame out. Good luck!

Haven't played 2e at all yet, though I've been itching to do so. This might be a good time to jump in, eh?

Will have a look at the rules and whatnot and get back to you.
In any event, Welcome!

I would agree with John Woodford's suggestion of getting into the GM seat by something simple as a lead in at first.

I did too when i started GM'ing.

Totally fine with that!

And I considered starting out with something a bit shorter, but I'm a sucker for longer stories, and I've really enjoyed Age of Ashes. That AP is very episodic, though, so perhaps I'll talk to the players I get about counting on the first book of it, seeing how things go, and keeping the option open to wrap it up there if we're not feeling it. That being said, I'm hyped right now and feeling in it for the long haul!

I am interested. I have never played PBP before, but it sounds amusing.

I would prefer an Android ancestry because it is something I can role-play believably. I also like INT-based spellcasting classes. Currently thinking Fervor Witch (divine tradition).

I certainly have no problem posting on these forums at least once per day.

If you would like me to create the character and alias and post my request to join with that, I can do that.

I'm intrigued, and have no idea as to what to play. :D Interesting that there's a friendly goblin at the outset--I wonder if the Goblinwood Wars history in 2E is slightly different? :)

My take is that Breachill is fairly isolated and insular. It's why they avoided being smothered with Asmodeus worship, and the goblins didn't trouble them in large numbers. The friendly-ish ones nearby are the remnants and offspring of goblins who got pretty thoroughly routed, and wanted nothing more to do with attacking longshanks.

I'm interested in joining and am creating a Barbarian as we speak. Question: Will you be using Free Archetype?

I'm thinking of maybe doing an Emancipated background Halfling of some sort. I may bow out if I get accepted to another game, but at the moment that's my plan.

Ooops, Goblinblood Wars.

Thinking about a Leshy Druid for healing via Goodberry and Diplomacy face stuff (and casting of course).

...was I influenced by your avatar, DM Fern? :D

Ooh good question! I haven't used it before, but I like the concept -- so yes, we'll be using it. Characters will eventually have the chance to reconstruct and run a keep and possibly make diplomatic connections, so having some versatility in that regard would not go amiss.

This is KingHotTrash's submission; Dario Zuz the Gunslinger.

I'm working on the fluff but essentially, he was a very young boy when his family, merchants travelling between Geb and Nex, were ambushed and slaughtered by ogres nearby Dongun Hold in the Mana Wastes. The dwarven defenders rode up in time to save some but not all. Freshly orphaned, Dario was adopted into Clan Zuz and learned the trade of gunpowder and flames.

He has come to Isger to initially learn more about his adopted family's origins in the ruined cities of Raseri Kanton and Jernashall but will become intrigued by the town's "Call for Heroes" meeting. How could a young gunslinger say no to that?

I've been wanting to do Age of Ashes for a while, but I have one question for character creation; would you allow a dwarf character with the half-elf versatile heritage? I'm aware it's a big ask, but it would not require any third party materials, and to be clear, I would not take any Human Feats at all, only sticking to dwarf, elf and half-elf ones. This would be purely for the purposes of storytelling, not to cheese any mechanics. The character's class would be an Oracle of the Flames mystery with the Haunting Vision background.

Not sure why I can't edit the original post again, but Oren would have the Haunted Dreams background, and the short version of his story is that all his life he was seeing visions of destruction that he believes is tied to Dahak, which culminated in him seeing a vision of Breachill burning, something that he is coming to town to stop.

That would be due to Paizo only allowing 1 hour to edit and/or delete it. After that, you gotta make a new post.

Greetings and salutations.

I have been made aware that a group of adventurers are being assembled and I am offering my services.

Alignment and personality:

Alignment is Lawful Good - though I interpret Lawful to be the opposite of Chaotic rather than being a law-abiding citizen of a particular culture. So it would be more accurate to call it 'Organized' or 'Methodical'.

I am loyal to my agreements and even more loyal to my friends. I am generally friendly, but often have problems being understood properly. I can end up giving offense accidentally. I do go out of my way to help and assist children of nearly any ancestry.

role and tactics:

Being a Witch means little to no armor and lower than average HP. I plan to use my spells as much as I can, and a bow when possible.

I am a Toymaker by trade. I really enjoy being around small children and making them happy. I also work very hard to keep them as safe as I can.

In combat, I am primarily a spellcaster, but I do have some healing ability. I am hoping to improve my healing with more experience.

I should also introduce you to my Poppet Familiar Sulee. I quite often have her assistance when speaking to people since I often have trouble with it myself.

Hi everyone. It is good to meet you all.

Posting for interest. I have a character in mind, just need to put it on paper.

Do toy need a specific hook for the PCs to be in the campaign, or should they just be present for the Call for Heroes?

I am assuming you meant to quote the question about using Free Archetype rules.

As for my submission, I haven't fully decided on divine or primal tradition. Witch is a bit of a flexible pick, so I may wait and see what the actual joined characters are. I'll adjust so as to not double up.

NotEspi wrote:

Call to heroes is good enough for me! And a general willingness to team up since it'll be a real short campaign if you don't ^.^

breithauptclan wrote:

Whoops! Yep, we'll use free archetypes, didn't I goofed on the quote.

DM Fern wrote:

Nice. I like free archetype. It doesn't make much difference until characters get to level 2, but it is something to keep in mind during the initial character creation.

hi! i don't have a character built just yet, but if this is still open i would be interested in joining! i can probably get a character up tomorrow, or tuesday at the latest. got a decent amount of experience with the system, just have to contend with choice paralysis :p

I know you said any official content is allowed, but could i ask how common the more "monstrous" races are in this region? i don't want to be that person that plays a gnoll in a party of humans and elves haha.

Here's Lisitsei, an environmental protection lawyer druid who will heal, cast, and be a party face. Earth Justice! :D

(I just liked the Barrister background and went from there. Hope you don't mind a non-campaign background--the Player's Guide says it's ok :) )

Lisitsei Nagorát

Another couple PBP Noob questions: Where and how will we get the final roster of players added to the game? And is there a way to get confirmation that our submitted characters are in the running?

Don't know how this DM does it, but from my experience in applying for PbPs, those who are picked get a PM letting them know that they've been picked. As for confirmation that our character's in the running, all I can say is that the only thing anyone can do is create the best character they can.

Usually there will be a post here in the Recruitment section saying who has been selected for the game. Like Chuck8 said, they may also send out private invitations first to confirm the players selected are still interested.

In the original post, Fern stated that recruitment will end March 5th(By then, he may very well have 30+ applicants. I kid you not). :P

So when the deadline hits, the DM will go over all the applicants and choose who they want. Then they list them in a post revealing all who made the cut. Me personally, I've only seen a DM send out pm's maybe once? Possibly twice? but don't hold me to that. Hard to remember. In my experience it's been quite rare.

Edit: HA! Orrrr, what KingHotTrash said. :P

OK. So Watch my DM inbox and keep an eye on this thread for final picks.

Well, of course. Mostly I am concerned about being excluded because I didn't submit in the correct form, in the correct way, or in enough detail. I'm seeing submissions ranging from a vague character concept to Pathbuilder links of fully specified characters.

Idk what the correct way to submit a character form is, if there even is one. A concept is a good placeholder, but the DM is probably gonna wanna see a completed character with a backstory. You can make a sheet here on Paizo.com with all of your character's stats and backstory details or you could maybe use another site like Pathbuilder. I don't know if the DM would see one application as being lesser than the other because you didn't use the Paizo site, I personally wouldn't if the application is good, although it's probably easier to keep track of if the sheet is made here.

This is well said. And the bold emphasis is mine. DEFINITELY want to follow the bolded statement.

And if you do use another site to build your pc, at least put a link to it to where the DM can look at it. Otherwise - and obviously - the DM will have nothing to go on.

And as far as how to format a character(if you're going to use the Paizo boards that is), well, you can always do what I did and steal somebody else's format. :) I liked how another player was setting up his profile and I just rolled with that.

I used Herolabs for PF1 and it wasn't an issue. Just copy and paste and fix it up how I like it. But I don't use Herolabs for PF2(because I'm not going to pay for that) so it was going to be on me to figure it out.

A good recruiting DM will say "hey, great stuff so far; I just need such and such to complete your application."

Alright, here is what I have come up with.

An emissary/diplomatic atache/informant from Brevoy, acting as a dancer/entertainer in Isger. They would be schmoozing in one of the local temples.

The mechanical chassis for the character would a battledancer swashbuckler.

Let me know if you would be interested in such a character in your game.

If the response is positive, let me know if you have any specific requirements for backstories (length, any notable NPCs in their past or present, and similar), and I will get to it. The mechanical part is pretty much done, now I need to work on the hard part - name and additional fluff.

As long as your gnoll isn't evil, Breachill is remote enough that there are plenty of of critters out there.

I wasn't entirely sure what the usual recruitment window was, and saw a few other threads that gave it a couple weeks. With me admitting to being brand new I wasn't sure I'd get a ton of interest -- seems that won't be a problem! I may close recruitment early if we fill up, I don't want to make a bunch of folks put a character together for nothing.

Here's what we're looking at so far, and what I'd still like from folks...

  • Joran Bravestone: a human barbarian native to Breachill who seems to enjoy his ladies (all set)
  • Dario Zuz: A gunslinger (human?) raised by dwarves, answering the Call for Heroes (all set)
  • Caiten (and Sulee!): An android fervor witch with his poppet familiar, a toymaker who loves children (has stats, needs the rest of a character sheet)
  • Oren Strelov: a human barbarian with visions of Breachill's destruction, coming to try and save it (all set)
  • Lisitsei Nagorát: an environmental protection lawyer druid (character sheet done, would like a little more of a nugget with your backstory, doesn't have to be super long!)
  • Archpaladin Zousha's submission: a half elf, half dwarf oracle of the flames with a haunting vision background (needs a character sheet and backstory)
  • NotEspi's submission: battledancer swashbuckler from Brevoy, entertaining in Isger (needs a character sheet)
  • DireYeen's possible gnoll? (would need a character sheet and backstory)

I'm enjoying all of them so far! Like I said, might close recruiting earlier than posted originally, but it's still open for now while I wait to see if folks flesh things out or are still interested.

My submission below. Let me know if anything should be added.

FULL DISCLOSURE - I have, at this point, dipped my toes into 2E, so I am not going into this completely blind. I have had rule books for a while, but it took time for my live table to agree to switch to 2E. That was like 2 weeks ago. We did the beginner box, and I am now planning my own campaign for them. I have played some 2E here on the forums (PFS), but just reached a first level 2 last month.

Yasamina Rysva - Female CG Human Swashbuckler 1
    Perception +5
    Languages Common, Draconic, Varisian
    AC 18; Fort +5; Ref +9; Will +5
    HP 20
    Speed 30 ft
    Str 12 (+0), Dex 18 (+4), Con 14 (+1), Int 10 (+0), Wis 10 (0), Cha 14 (+2)

    Description:
Yasmi is a human woman in her late 20's. Her light brown hair grows down to her upper neck, and the front is usually fixed by a ribbon or band, to keep it out of her eyes. Just above her amber eyes, she has a single piece of jewelry - seemingly a small ruby embedded in gold - decorating the bridge of her nose. A delicate, if a little flat, nose is adorned with a large golden nose ring, and her narrow chin make her lips seem rather wide. Her long, silk clothing covers her shoulder to ankles, with the exception of but the neck and forearms. From the first glance, she has a dancer's figure - slender, but toned. The dress contains many colours, and is clearly meant to capture the eye and emphasise movement. On top of the visual component, she has a chime belt around her waist, usually announcing her presence as she walks.

    Personality:
Yasmi is quite talkative and cheerful - after all, it is her job to fit in and lift the spirits of the people around her. There is a curious glimmer in her eyes, and she likes to discuss various topics. Small talk on the surface, but she keeps mental notes if she stumbles upon infromation considered useful, or even dangerous.

    Backstory:
Yasamina Risva is a child of Dinu Botras, a Brevan merchant, and Tajana - his Varisian housemaid. Due to the delicate matter of Botras' wife in the picture and his social status, public acknowledgement of an illegitimate child was not an option. He did, despite his wife's protests, keep her in the house with her mother. As a result, Yasamina was able to grow up with Dinu's other children, and even recieve some education in her youth. When Yasamina turned 13, Lady Botras had decided that she is old enough to fend for herself, and must go. Dinu used his connections to land his only daughter a place in the Aldori Academy of Restov. While the institution is primarily a military college, the students are also tutored in etiquette, statecraft, and politics. Yasamina's musical and dance talent was quickly picked up in the classes, and to her mother's delight, she was managed to be one of the highlights of the academy's dance performance of the summer solstice festival in Rostov. Tajana was not the only one who was watching the performance, however, and Yasmi was soon approached by a recruiter in service of House Surtova. The girl jumped at the opportunity to climb the social ladder, and accepted. She was enlisted in various other classes - mostly swrodfighting, diplomacy and politics, dance, and unofficially - spycraft. After the completion of her studies, she was sent to Isger, as a performer for the local Brevoy embassy in Breachill. She was to find a way into the upper circles of society and delivery reports to the embassy. Her cover was to be Shelyn's Smile. A local temple to Shelyn, since she actually prays to the goddess. After spending almost a year in Breachill, Yasmi learned the ropes and got to know some of the locals. Spending most of her time in Shelyn's Smile, and heading out into the night in her dress and ceremonial blades. While she doesn't really like to interact with Morta Valaskin, she is a source of information. And as she was taught, there is no smoke without fire (but one should check the source). Another good opportunity would be to come visit the monthly 'Call for heroes' assembly, where she could pull information from the would-be heroes of town. They had to get here somehow, after all, and they could have seen something interesting on the way.

Many warriors rely on brute force, weighty armor, or cumbersome weapons. For you, battle is a dance where you move among foes with style and grace. You dart among combatants with flair and land powerful finishing moves with a flick of the wrist and a flash of the blade, all while countering attacks with elegant ripostes that keep enemies off balance. Harassing and thwarting your foes lets you charm fate and cheat death time and again with aplomb and plenty of flair.

    Key Ability Dexterity

Hit Points 10 plus your Constitution modifier

    Expert Perception

    Trained Fortitude

    Expert Reflex., Will

Trained in Acrobatics, in one skill determined by your swashbuckler's style, and in a number of skills equal to 4 plus your Intelligence modifier.

Trained all simple and martial weapons, unarmed attacks

    Trained light armor, unarmored defense

    Feats (Level Progression):

    Level 1

    Background Feat - Multilingual

    Prerequisites trained in Society
You easily pick up new languages. You learn two new languages, chosen from common languages, uncommon languages, and any others you have access to. You learn an additional language if you are or become a master in Society and again if you are or become legendary.

Special You can select this feat multiple times. Each time, you learn additional languages.

    Ancestry Feat - Gloomseer

    Prerequisites ethnicity requirement
Gloom holds few terrors for you. You gain low-light vision.

    General Feat - Fleet

You move more quickly on foot. Your Speed increases by 5 feet.

    Feats(Class) and Class Features:

    Swachbuckler' style

As a swashbuckler, you have your own distinctive style that enables you to gracefully handle everyday events and lifeor- death situations alike. Choose a swashbuckler's style. This style determines the additional actions you use to gain panache and makes you trained in the skill related to that action

    Style - Battledancer

To you, a fight is a kind of performance art, and you command your foes' attention with mesmerizing motions. You are trained in Performance and gain the Fascinating Performance skill feat. You gain panache during an encounter when the result of your Performance check to Perform exceeds the Will DC of an observing foe, even if the foe isn't fascinated.

    Exemplary Finisher (9th Level)
You can Step as a free action immediately after the finisher.

Class Feat 1 - Focused Fascination

    Prerequisites Fascinating Performance
When you use Fascinating Performance in a combat encounter, you need only a success, rather than a critical success, to fascinate your target. This works only if you're attempting to fascinate one target. For example, if you were an expert in Performance, you could choose to target multiple creatures normally or target one creature and fascinate it on a success.

    Confident Finisher

You make an incredibly graceful attack, piercing your foe's defenses. Make a Strike with a weapon or unarmed attack that would apply your precise strike damage, with the following failure effect.

Failure You deal half your precise strike damage to the target. This damage type is that of the weapon or unarmed attack you used for the Strike.

    Panache

You care as much about the way you accomplish something as whether you actually accomplish it in the first place. When you perform an action with particular bravado, you can leverage this moment of verve to perform spectacular, deadly maneuvers. This state of flair is called panache, and you are either in a state of panache or you are not.

You gain panache by successfully performing the skill check associated with specific actions that have a bit of flair, including Tumble Through and additional actions determined by your swashbuckler's style. At the GM's discretion, after succeeding at a check to perform a particularly daring action, such as swinging on a chandelier or sliding down a drapery, you also gain panache if your result is high enough (typically the very hard DC for your level, but the GM can choose a different threshold).

While you have panache, you gain a +5-foot status bonus to your Speeds and gain a +1 circumstance bonus to checks to Tumble Through or to take any actions that give you panache due to your style. The precise strike class feature also causes you to deal extra precision damage while you have panache. Powerful finisher actions, including Confident Finisher can be used only while you have panache and cause you to lose your panache.

Normally, you gain and use panache only in combat encounters; when an encounter ends, you lose panache.

    Precise Strike

You strike with flair. When you have panache and you Strike with an agile or finesse melee weapon or agile or finesse unarmed attack, you deal 2 additional precision damage. If the strike is part of a finisher, the additional damage is 2d6 precision damage instead.

As your swashbuckler level increases, so does your additional damage for precise strike. Increase the amount of additional damage on a Strike and the number of additional dice on a finisher by one at 5th, 9th, 13th, and 17th levels.

Initial Style Feat - Fascinating Performance

    Prerequisites trained in Performance
When you Perform, compare your result to the Will DC of one observer. If you succeed, the target is fascinated by you for 1 round. If the observer is in a situation that demands immediate attention, such as combat, you must critically succeed to fascinate it and the Perform action gains the incapacitation trait. You must choose which creature you’re trying to fascinate before you roll your check, and the target is then temporarily immune for 1 hour. If you’re an expert in Performance, you can fascinate up to four observers; if you’re a master, you can fascinate up to 10 observers; and if you’re legendary, you can fascinate any number of observers at the same time.

Healer's Tools - This kit of bandages, herbs, and suturing tools is necessary for Medicine checks to Administer First Aid, Treat Disease, Treat Poison, or Treat Wounds. If you wear your healer’s tools, you can draw and replace them as part of the action that uses them.

Alrighty! Dario is all finished up! I put more background stuff in the profile near the bottom, DM Fern, so feel free to look it over when you have the time :D

Hi hi! DireYeen reporting in with Hornet, gnollish inventor and aspiring adventurer. Her stats and such are all on this alias' profile, and I can provided some more information below:

    Description:

Hornet stands over 6 feet tall, but with a hunched posture that tends to bring her down to within the average range for Breachill's mostly human populace. She can often be seen in her armour, patched together from various different metals in various different states of repair, and with a pair of thick goggles pulled up onto her forehead when she isn't tinkering with her works. Her fur is a light grey-brown, spotted with darker patches along her back and shoulders, with a coarse mane running down her spine.
Hornet's voice is a bit higher than one might expect from a person her size, and sounds rough in the manner of someone with a bad cough. She has a thick gnollish accent as well, replacing V's with F's and producing sharp glottal consonants.

    Personality:

While cheerful and friendly enough on the surface, Hornet is even more so to those she considers her pack, and honourary gnolls themselves - often punching, hugging, or ruffling hair to demonstrate affection, and rambling on for hours about her tinkering or the latest topic to catch her interest.

    Backstory:

Hornet was born in Druma, near the border not too far from Breachill. As adherents to the traditional gnoll gods rather than the Prophecies of Kalistrade, her family never had much wealth, but from the day she could walk she seemed to have a knack for finding strange odds and ends that others overlooked or discarded. As she grew into an adult, she pursued her desire to take these small, broken things and give them new life - even managing to make a few silver pieces where necessary, though profiting off of them was never her goal. Her life in Druma continued to be marked by hardship, as a disease she never quite recovered from left her weakened substantially. Spurring herself on, she created a patchwork suit of armour for herself that would compensate for her own body's weaknesses. Finally, she came to realize that she could not stay in Druma - unimaginable wonders were out there in the world, waiting to be discovered by someone who could see the potential in seemingly useless scrap. With what money she had saved up, she moved to Breachill, where she has lived for the past four years.

    Tactical Information/Party Role:

Hornet is a force to be reckoned with should she get a foe within range of her axe, though she suffers more when put at a range. Outside of combat, her Intelligence allows her to repair and identify a wide variety of equipment.

Finally, if another player is amenable to the idea, Hornet might well already know one of the party members, as she's lived in Breachill for a good few years now and is social by nature.

I'm down. Yasami was in Breachill for almost a year, and is the talkative type. A friendly neighbourhood gnoll would certainly pique her interest.

Doubly so if it is a fellow Shelynite.

I'm not confirmed for the game so far, so we'll wait for the the straws to be drawn, I guess.

I made minor edits to the character sheet. It's in the character profile. Nothing major, just a few typos, really.

I'm definitely down for Dario knowing folks, though he is only been in town for maybe a few days. Rough and tumble yet gregarious and friendly, he is happy to tell tales of his travels since he is a distance away from his home region of Alkenstar.

Party-role wise, Dario is a melee gunslinger with the Way of the Drifter. While ranged capable, he tends to mix it with melee and close range shooting. With the Rogue archetype, he is going to end up very skilled overall with a strong focus in Crafting.
