My favorite thing about dwarves is their racial weapon proficiencies: dorn-dergar is cool, war-axe is a solid one-hander option, and the war-shield pairs with it nicely or works great for dual-wielding 2 shields, plus longhammer and longaxe are great reach weapons and the boulder helmet lets you still threaten adjacent squares! I actually am playing an aasimar bloodrager right now who took ewp longhammer.

I love playing martial dwarves too. I had a character long, long ago that specialized in the urgrosh, and I've always wanted to make a dwarven pellet bow specialist. (Maybe a bolt ace? I'll have to look into that someday.)

I've been very impressed with how well Greta is making use of that longhammer! That feat was a good investment.

Lol, thanks- I have to figure out what feat to take next. In theory combat reflexes would be great with my reach, but with so many of us it can be tough to get a good position for getting things to provoke. I’ll probably end up just taking power attack.

Vaeldon's backstory is done, and the CS is ready.

Good luck, everyone!

One more applicant, GH, if you don't mind. I just had this concept in my head and had to get it out: the helpful Lola, built around the halfling trait to aid another PC to give him/her +4 to hit or AC or skill or saves.

Background:

The helpful Lola has always been inquisitive, even as a child. She grew up in Sandpoint, helping out at her parents' bookstore: "Leafbottom Books". During her free time, Lola had her noise buried in the books, expanding her intelligence, with her favorite subjects being goblins (she taught herself their language), caves (and its denizens) as well as engineering principles. Five years ago during the "Late Unpleasantness" when the world was turned upside down, a racist mob broke into her family's store at night and set a fire. By the time the fire was doused, the majority of the books had been lost. However, what hurt Lola most as she watched the fire consume her favorite books was the feeling of helplessness as she could not stop the mob. That episode convinced her that she needed martial training so no one ever would harm her family or property. She was ridiculed when she applied to join the local watch, but her stubbornness and persistence eventually won out, and when she was given a chance, her small nature, agility, and natural luck made her an ideal fit for the Watch. She focused her training on a reach weapon to stay out of immediate danger and selected the glaive in honor of the goddess Shelyn. She trained intensively with the weapon, focusing on defensive tactics and distraction techniques. She quickly became a favorite in the watch as her small stature allowed her to distract enemies/drunks for someone else to land the telling blows. Her lack of ego was a breath of fresh air to the other guards. Now, 5 years later, with the bookstore's supply built up again, Lola is happy to serve the Sheriff and his men and watch over the bookstore in her free time. She takes great pride in protecting her hometown and serving the weak and less fortunate.

Future plans in game:
Branching out into the investigator class to get the Swift Aid talent and then continuing as a fighter to aid her allies.

Can't ever go wrong with Power Attack on a 2-Hander, especially with a skald in the party!

In the interest of full-disclosure, I want to let everyone know that I’ve given Orin permission to break the rules (not the actual rules rules, but one of the recruitment rules). As we were talking about his character and what he was hoping to be/do, and looking at some multiclass options, we stumbled on the “detective” bard archetype… bards are not a martial class as I’ve defined it here but the archetype just seemed so perfectly suited to a city watch campaign that I gave him permission to build as one from the start. If that bothers anyone I truly am sorry, but I’m going to chalk it up to the ‘rule of cool’. If anyone has any questions (about this or anything else) please feel free to post them, or PM if you’re unhappy about that decision.

I glad that you are disclosing it, instead of it suddenly be found out by another player and causing some friction and problems later on, and I don't mind allowing for some rule breaking in Character creation rules if it provides an interesting character that is not OverPowered.

However, I from a GM and Player POV would want to be fair and allow some rule breaking to be allowed for ALL players,
not just the one player, especially if they already have a reserved spot.
This allowed rule breaking option, I feel should cover only one of the following and only occur once for the game; tweaking feat requirements or PrC requirements, allowing one 3PP feat that is not OverPowered, or a modified racial trait, .. etc, so long as that the change is not overpowering.

No problem at all with the accommodation.

updated Character list.

Mentioned Dropping
Govannon Gittins- hexcrafter magus - post #66
Rhubarb Tuesday - monk - post #111

----------------------

We have 4-6 slots (assuming best case being 6 players) let's look at the numbers,
we have 10 characters, 2 interested, and 1 is auto reserved.
So best case 5 open slots, and potentially 12 characters fighting for those slots, so it's less then 50/50 at the moment for almost all of us.

No problem here either.

Sorry about the rules stretch, everything I was trying to do just seemed to be accomplished more efficiently by the detective than 2 levels of slayer, shifting into bard.
I'll have background up this afternoon and build finalized tonight.

I don't mind stretching rules for a good character idea.
And I agree that Bard(Detective) and Bard (Archaeologist) both cover traps well and not needing two levels of slayer.

Though since the GM has now set a public precedent, I'll request one option of the two I present, the GM can still deny both;
Allow Ninja at first level, or drop Combat reflexes and Mobility from the Shadow Dancer PrC requirements.
If both are denied, I'll keep with the character submission as is.

I am willing to hear appeals from anyone for specific exceptions to recruitment rules (not mechanical rules though, so no changing requirements for feats or PrCs or anything like that). So if anyone wants to start with a race or class that isn’t allowed for in the initial recruitment post feel free to ask me, or just submit it. If it’s cool and fits well with the theme I’ll consider giving you a pass for the ‘rule of cool’ too. That said, please make sure that your request or submission adequately explains how this unusually character came to be part of Sandpoint’s watch, and why being a watchman is a significant part of their identity.

Also, just over 12 hours to go for submissions (although if you make a request for an exception before the deadline, and I agree to it, I will give you some extra time to finalize your submission while I’m evaluating other ones).

No issues with the "singing detective" accommodation.

:)

I'll get to work on a Version Ninja of my character then.
If I can't make it work, I'll default back to the original idea.

I think it’s great that you’re willing to modify your restrictions to wind up with something that Orin’s player is really happy with. :)

Oh yeah the detective bard works great with this game's opening concept. Investigator makes a lot of sense too. Sounds good to me.

EDIT: Diviner wizard too. I'm not redoing my submission but I've long wanted to play a diviner based off of a very minor character from the Greyhawk setting, a one-eyed former bandit named Janzipur who served on the watch of one of the kingdoms bordering the Bandit Kingdoms, IIRC.

FC- maybe you’ll lose in eye in play and can build towards a one-eyed diviner who used to stop bandits, lol.

Everyone- (just a couple minutes more than) 6 hours remaining for submissions.

I think Orin is done. Let me know if I missed anything.

Good luck to everyone.

Wow, worked on two versions of a Ninja Character, and finally got one that works......

Uploaded into alias, will work on character rendering this weekend....
And Sorry if some math is incorrect as I may have forgotten to finish working on a part, as I wrote and re-wrote a lot in the backstory.

Good Luck everyone.

Less than an hour to go- if you want to apply, speak now of forever hold your piece.

Haha, I nearly saw this exact thing happen organically on these boards.

Very minor Kingmaker spoilers:
I was part of a Kingmaker PBP game that lasted a few years on this site. Our first encounter, we needed to fight off bandits at the trading post, and our elven wizard took a critical hit - an arrow to the eye that killed him instantly. The fight went really badly - only two of our PCs survived, with my PC captured and our swashbuckler scoundrel retreating along the road back to Brevoy, where he ran into the replacement PCs, including the replacement PC for the dead wizard. Our GM vanished about that time, and the dead wizard's player put up a notice for a replacement GM, and the game was picked up by a GM that ran it for four or so years after that.

In talking while the new GM took over, our wizard's player - who had grown fond of the wizard, even in the short time that he'd been played - talked to the GM and they decided the wizard didn't die. He'd merely lingered on death's door and after my PC and Oleg and Svetlana were freed from the bandits, the wizard's remaining eye fluttered open, and soon after sporting an eyepatch, our diviner conjurer remained with the party until the game's end.

So in a way, I guess I've played Janzipur-adjacent at least!

Good luck everyone!

Recruitment is now Closed.
As promised in the initial post, I’ll take the weekend to evaluate all the submissions and I’ll post the party by Monday morning at the latest. Thank you all for your interest!

Congrats and have fun. I've been on holidays and totally missed applying to this one. Might have been a good place to try for the arcane archer :) Sandpoint is awesome. Enjoy. (Note that it's still in the recruitment section)

Hmmm, no demi-humans were picked...damn humans! LOL..but seriously, to those selected, enjoy the game!
