Rhubarb Tuesday |
This is some kind of background that tells a lot without actually telling it. The part I left out is Ruby’s father died in the line of duty. Mom’s still alive; no siblings.
The presentation is weird, even for me. But clean… for me.
Rhubarb stands
Before the shrine of Irori
She bows, recites vows
She praises his glory
It’s a new day, a Tuesday
A not-much-to-do-day
But any new day can
Bring a new story
(6:30 AM)
She steps outta the bath
Onto her clean-shaven feet
Time to roll up her sleeves
And start walking her beat
Little red haired cop
On the mean Sandpoint streets
Flash a badge, flash a smile
At the people she meets
(9:02 AM)
Two minutes late
For her coffee break
Better drink it up fast
For Irori’s sake
“A doughnut? No, fool!
I weigh twenty-two pounds!
I start eating puff pasty,
I’ll be puffy and round!”
(9:10 AM)
Now the sidewalks are crowded
Like a forest of legs
Who the hell broke his fast
On hardboiled eggs?!
Being two-foot-six
And downwind really sucks
Nothing more overrated
Than the phrase “halfling luck”
(12:45 PM)
Rhubarb wolfs down her lunch
She’d rather per-fect her punch
And her block and her kick
And her acrobatic tricks
Until she’s soaking in sweat
Deep breath, no regret
Until the sheriff says, “My quarters
Gotta give you special orders.”
(1:30 PM)
“Your track record has shown
You do fine working alone
But if acting’s your dream
It’s time I put you on a team
On-stage you work with others
What of your sisters? Your brothers
They wear the badge; they fight for justice
They’re asking you, ‘hey, don’t you trust us?’”
(1:31 PM)
“Yyyy…es?”
Offer accepted without drama
Rhubarb runs home to her mama
“All my hard work has paid off
They don’t laugh now, they don’t scoff”
And her mama, she’s so glad
Her girl’s a cop just like her dad
Today ain’t no slow-news day
Sandpoint’s got another Tuesday!
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
Cyrdak Drokkus’ personal secretary looks at the script. Then the tiny redhead. Then the script.
“Is that all?” she asks.
Rhubarb smiles at what’s-her-face. “Heh. Not exactly. Background vocals would keep the beat. Not such a slow news day, a win-some-you-lose day, a drown-yourself-in-booze day, or five-alarm-snooze day…” She snorts, “Whatever that is, right?”
The secretary is unamused. Stone cold unamused. “What that is… is slam poetry. You’re what, nineteen? You’re too young to tell your life story in slam poetry. Life stories are for dead historical figures.”
Rhubarb’s face turns a shade of rhubarb red. “Well, someday, I’ll be a dead historical figure. I just gotta get famous first.” Turning her frown upside down, she adds, “So, if you could kindly book an appointment with Mr. Drokkus… heh heh?”
The secretary peers over her glasses. “Do I need to call the police?”
“I am the police. I’ll escort myself out.”
True to her word, Officer Tuesday steps out of Cydrak Drokkus’ office. She heads back onto her beat, whistling, Bad boys, bad boys, whatchya gonna do…
Giant Halfling |
Alright, there have been a couple other people who mentioned ideas, I think, but here's the list of submissions I have so far.
Guaranteed Spot:
Orin Telmar- vanguard slayer
Submissions:
Govannon Gittins- hexcrafter magus
Ox- 2-handed fighter
Jaymin Thrushberry- battle scout ranger
Diego Davino- fighter
Rhubarb Tuesday- monk
Vaeldon Grimblade- paladin
Nico Solter- bolt ace gunslinger
If I missed anyone please speak up so I can add you to the list. And, if you have any questions please don't be shy with those either!
Rhubarb Tuesday |
Updated my profile, but left 2 blanks to be filled if selected:
• monk bonus feat - I could take dragon style now, but dodge opens the door for jabbing style… either way, 13 STR so I have power attack’s prereq
• INT-based background skill - artistry playwright if Giant Halfling thinks my adventure skills cover the cop job; Lore could work too (?)
__________
AC question:
I have 18 AC…
AC: 4 dex + 3 cha + 1 monk = 18
• t: AC - ?
• ff: AC - dex = 14
…but what is my touch AC? Does the CHA and monk AC bonus still apply to touch?
Giant Halfling |
Tuesday- unless you get something from an archetype that I’m overlooking, you won’t get +1 for being a monk until 4th level. So, it looks like you should be at AC 17 normally (10 +4 Dex +3 Cha). The Wisdom bonus applies to touch and flat-footed AC (as long as you’re not incapacitated or helpless), so for you that means touch AC is also 17 and flat-footed is 13.

Oh! That’s +1 size, not monk. Right numbers, wrong labels.

Nico has a high enough dexterity to do alright with stealth. But she doesn't have it as a class skill so she's more in the position of not messing things up for the one who does take the lead on it.
No disable device though, at least for quite a few levels. She'll be switching over to Slayer or maybe Inquisitor in the mid levels so she could pick it up then. Not a great solution for us anytime soon.
EDIT: I just took a look at Orin. Vanguard archetype is really sweet but does use up the first two slayer talents at 2nd and 4th. Orin won't be able to pick up Trap Finding until 6th level at earliest. That's still slightly ahead of when Nico could do it though.

Okay, after some thinking and quiet time. I've discovered what i want to actually do.
Make a Sniper archetype Slayer. Long range sneak attack, Hawkeye type
Oddly there was a DnD 3.5 PrC that did that, I believe it was called Order of the Bow Initiate, +Xd8 60ft ranged sneak attack, with some Close Quarters Combat protection.
-----
Working on a Sneaky Ranger, and thinking of dipping into Rogue from some good ol sneak attack, and some trap skill......

id recommend looking into accomplished sneak attacker as well, if you do dip
rdknight |
@Orin: I apologize in advance if I'm overstepping, but I have a suggestion if you're planning only a couple of levels or so in Slayer. The Vanguard archetype is fantastic, but only of you follow it through to higher levels.
For a 2 level dip you get a +1 to initiative and a teamwork feat you can qualify for at 2nd level. This list you have to choose from isn't very good at that point. It's not as bad as a stick in the eye, but you're cheating yourself a little.
You'd benefit more from staying vanilla and using your 2nd level slayer talent to choose something better. Trapfinding also gives you Disable Device as a class skill. But even if you didn't want to mess with traps you could choose a no prereq Ranger style feat, or an extra combat feat of any type with the Weapon Training Rogue talent. Bards are kinda feat starved so grab them while you can.
Just a something to consider.
Archae |
I'm a fan of the old school stuff at times, and feel Ranger/Rogue, or Ranger/Ninja might be a better fit then Slayer, as a part of me even wants to dip into Shadow Dancer as well.
i just built a pretty effective shadowdancer dancer actually. I'd avoid rogue unless you want the finesse training, there's some redundant abilities and Shadowdancer works best when you have that full bab. Ranger could work well if it gets darkness spells to cause dim light

Got most done, just need to work on equipment and some polish here and there.

@Orin: Trapfinding gives you 1/2 your level (minimum 1) to perception to locate traps. With a 2 level dip you'll get +1 perception to locate traps. You also have a good WILL score and perception in class. You won't be hurting that badly. Both your Slayer and Bard classes will give you 6 points per level at least, so if you can spare one for perception every now and then you'll be in decent shape. And Perception is typically the single most important skill in the game.
But really you don't have to worry about being the one who finds the trap, anyone can do that with perception. You'd only have to do something about it when someone did find one.
Orin Telmar |
I think (for now) after mulling over the options, I will make Orin a standard Slayer and take trapfinding at 2nd level.
His roles will be Diplomacy, trap spotting and disabling, and ranged damage.
Thanks for the help so far Rdknight, this is my first slayer, so all input welcome.
My thoughts so far;
Alternate human trait-Silver Tongued: Human are often adept at subtle manipulation and putting even sworn foes at ease. Humans with this trait gain a +2 bonus on Diplomacy and Bluff checks. In addition, when they use Diplomacy to shift a creature’s attitude, they can shift up to three steps up rather than just two. This racial trait replaces skilled.
Alternate human trait-Focused Study: All humans are skillful, but some, rather than being generalists, tend to specialize in a handful of skills. At 1st, 8th, and 16th level, such humans gain Skill Focus in a skill of their choice as a bonus feat. This racial trait replaces the bonus feat trait.
campaign trait-?
trait- Trustworthy: You gain a +1 trait bonus on Bluff checks made to fool someone. You also gain a +1 trait bonus on Diplomacy checks, and Diplomacy is always a class skill for you.
Human feat-skill focus diplomacy
1st level feat- weapon focus longbow
Archae |
Archae- if archery feels too crowded for you feel free to switch, but if I understand correctly Orin isn’t going to use stealth or snipe at all so there would be some considerable differences between the two ideas.
im just throwing ideas around mostly. I'm mostly trying to occupy time at work, figure out something cool to do, While also trying to build something to theme.
Two things that stuck out are A weird Master sniper Familiar build
And dragon heir Scion because... Well Dragons are cool and that's the dragon archetype that sucks the least imo
Fighting Chicken |
Fighting chicken- a halfling barbarian settled in Sandpoint might be difficult to explain, but I’ll be very curious to see how you try if you decide to go that route.
Well, I've decided to go this route so I'm glad it has piqued your curiosity :)
I'm working on the backstory and hope to have something up this weekend.
Archae |
Arcahe- dragons are cool, lol.
ive looked over the Dragonheir Scion. Its not terrible.
Free arcane strike and feats for intimidation builds
Scaling energy resistance and Natural armor and intimidation.
Free wings too, cant forget that.
I can definitely see some use as soon as i figure out a weapon and build idea.
Part of my brain giggles at the idea of getting Cut and smash from the air at some point but doing it with his fists. I might try swinging in that direction.

Nice! Now I’m not the only one whose name is a bit of a wordplay.
there’s at least one sneaky applicant (Tuesday).
Yes. Not the optimal monk by any means, but her stealth is +14, which is pretty good for level 1. Her perception is just okay though. A good scout, but for trap-finding, you may want a second opinion.
Cleaned up profile a bit and added this:
• A homebody: she lives with her mom
• A tiny human?: she shaves the hair off her feet—which Mom thinks is weird, but Tues says it’s only weird if you talk about it—and she wears shoes with her dress uniform
• Not a real badge?: Tuesday uses her sleeves of many garments in case she gets an acting gig or needs to dress a certain way (ex., not like a cop) to talk to potential informants …but sometimes her badge is on the wrong side with backwards letters if she activates her sleeves in front of the mirror
• R.I.P. Sgt. Tuesday: her dad died in the line of duty
• I’m 37?!: there are only 36 other halflings in town, and how many of them are appropriate for the dating pool? Tuesday doesn’t seem to care…
I mean she doesn’t date. Please don’t get thrown by the Clerks reference.
• What does she care about? Acting… and she dabbles in poetry
Also, if selected, I’ll use Artistry: Creative Writing whenever Tues needs to write a(n official police) report!
Rhubarb Tuesday |
Nice! I’m in a PF2 game with a player with a similar shield-bearer. She plays the part well. I tend to enjoy the more aggressive melee types, but always enjoy having a defensive ally close by. If we both get in, you can expect I’ll be leaping over you a lot as an opening move (once we’re Lv.5 and I have Flying Kick).
@GH, are custom magic items potentially in our future? No biggie if they’re not, but I’m thinking two cestuses and an Agile amulet of mighty fists are on my wish list. By Lv.8, I’ll meet the prequisite for Jabbing Master, which is arguably better than Dragon Ferocity since I lack the strength to truly benefit from Dragon Style as Saph did.
Jabbing Master is super fun to visualize (if you see every d6 as a light combo-hit), but a bit of a chore to roll.
Vaeldon Grimblade |
Question, GH:
How do you feel about the Non Lethal Force feat? Technically it's 3rd party, but all it does is remove the attack penalty when trying to fight without killing your opponent.
I plan on having a club or hammer for this sort of thing, since having a member of the watch slicing up drunks with his sword seems a bit extreme.
Less than optimal for gaming, maybe, but seems to make sense from an rping perspective.
Just lemme know. :)

Good news everyone! I've finally been struck by the Inspiration faerie!
Now is the time for the Tower Shield Build, now is the time for Mobile Bulwark Style and providing cover.
Now is the time for MORE ARMOR CLASS.
That said, should have a rough draft up today at some point.
Do we have a Rising of The Shield Hero here.

There's an idea, If it were possible, i would. i am focusing on the shield, though starting off with power attack and shield focus, im deciding between the cunning feat and or something else,
though i am inspired to build with dirty tricks in mind
Giant Halfling |
Archae- I was starting to wonder if anyone was going to pitch a sword and board build.
Tuesday- It probably depends on what you mean by custom items? If you just mean things that aren't dropped as loot (like an enchanted cestus) then yes, I will try to make sure there are opportunities to find or commission specific items. If you mean magic items that don't exist in any of the books, I'm willing to listen to your ideas and think about them but I wouldn't rely on being able to get anything like that. Also, cesti are weapons on their own so you can't use them with an amulet of mighty fists (unless, maybe, the ascetic style would let you do that? Generally,) you'd have to get agile put on each cestus separately.
Vaeldon- we won't be using the 3pp non lethal force feat, but there are several feats (and maybe even a trait or two) that let you deal non lethal damage with no attack roll penalty (bludgeoner is the first one that jumps to mind). That said, with 200g and proficiency in all martial weapons, spending 1g on a sap for if/when you have to subdue townsfolk may really be your best bet? (Aside from the RP angle of being in the watch, I'm planning to follow the AP pretty faithfully, so there actually won't be that many times when it comes up, I don't think.)
Anyone still looking for a 'different' concept- As I've said previously, I'm not super concerned about filling traditional party rolls for this game but if you're looking for unexplored build space one thing that we don't seem to really have yet is a force multiplier? One person mentioned multiclassing into skald but I don't think they've made an actual submission yet, and Orin was thinking about maybe taking bard levels but I think he changed his mind about that. There's a number of archetypes (and even base classes) that give martial classes some party buffs if anyone is interested in being a support type character?
rdknight |
@GH: Would you be willing to waive the Sarenrae worshiper requirement for the Blade of Mercy Trait? It eliminates the the penalty to attacks when doing non-lethal damage. It seems very local police-ish to me.
I'm a little surprised nobody went with a Bounty Hunter archetype Slayer. It's full of capture oriented goodies for a grappler.
A support type character might be workable for Nico. I'll see what I can find that might be workable.
Rhubarb Tuesday |
I mean game-legal items, but ones we purchase so we can choose what they do? Training enhancements could just go on the amulet. I’d be Lv.8 before they’d be helpful, since I’d only want top-of-feat-tree stuff like vicious stomp and jabbing master. I meet prereq for vicious stomp at Lv.2, but it isn’t terribly helpful until Lv.9, when I would have the Leg Sweep style strike. (Assuming that medium enemies are common enough that tripping feats are worth having.)
• Agile as soon as I can afford it
• Training: Jabbing Master @ Lv.8
• Training: Vicious Stomp @ any level from 2 to 9
…and when we get the big bucks at double-digit levels, I still have slots for Leverage for easier tripping and Fortuitous for an extra AoO from my Leg Sweep.
My profile has a “path to Jabbing Master” plan that works with or without magic items. Faster with, of course.
Also, for fun, I just sketched Tuesday chasing a stereotypical cartoon robber. (And yes, shoes with her dress uniform… Tues tries to fit in with the human world. Mother disapproves.)
non-lethal damage. It seems very local police-ish to me.
I love that we have multiple candidates going in this direction. (I also intend to use nonlethal attacks.)

Wasn't sure how much of a factor it might be, and was trying to think like a paly/policeman. :D That said, a sap it is.

I had considered an Inspiring Commander cavalier archetype before realizing it was also 3PP, with exactly that in mind.

Character Background
=============
When Sorala Barleyes would fall into ear-splitting, teeth-gnashing, floor-pounding tantrums, usually because of some perceived unfairness (no third breakfast? The horror!), her mother and father would shake their heads awestruck at the little being’s outbursts. How had two such mild-mannered halflings, he a cobbler, she a washerwoman, well-liked, earnest and dependable, created a child with such a finely-tuned sense of injustice, such a wellspring of rage? Sorala’s grandfather knew. Little Sorala carried within her the spark of her great-grandfather, Nedrukk Barleyes, a halfling of giant stature in his time: a titan mauler. Sorala’s mother clucked, her brow furrowed. ”Now don’t you go filling our little girl’s head with that nonsense.”
Sorala’s grandfather, Nedrukk Barleyes Jr., smiled and sat back on his stool, chewing on his pipe and eyeing the girl kicking her legs against the floor, her wails ringing around their tidy home. And then he set about doing just what his daughter forbade.
While Sorala’s parents worked, her grandfather trained her in the ways of fighting, especially fighting those larger than herself - skills that he himself had learned from his father, before his father’s gruesome demise at the Battle of Bloodrun Mesa, which resulted in the boy respecting his mother’s wishes and letting those skills lie dormant while he grew into a cobbler and raised his own family in Sandpoint.
So they worked on weaponsplay and defensive postures, and more importantly, Sorala’s grandfather nurtured the girl’s sense of injustice, and fed her the deeds and tales of her grandfather and the other great halfling titan maulers, which she soaked up like a tomato plant takes in the sun. Sorala grew strong and athletic, and her sense of injustice served her well. When the Clairemont girl was bullied to near mental collapse, Sorala bloodied the noses of three bullies twice her size, and the youngest Clairmont was troubled no more. When the late unpleasantness gripped the town, Sorala baked dinner for the exhausted watch, and helped remove old Chopper’s birds from the buildings he’d carved them upon, carvings now viewed as harbingers of madness, rather than artistic blessings from an old eccentric.
And when, years later, Sorala’s grandfather lay on his deathbed, wracked with the coughing sickness, he beckoned his granddaughter close. She was a fine fighter, and her temper and sense of justice had given her the upper hand in local scrapes and social situations. The last skills she needed were patience and discipline. Ned pulled Sorala to his side and whispered, ”You will one day save Sandpoint, I can feel it in my old bones. Tap your rage and keep your moral compass pointed towards doing right. I’ll not be able to teach you any more, but you can learn more from Sheriff Hemlock. He’s agreed to give you a job at the militia, should you accept it. Treat him with respect, follow his directions, and don’t be afraid to use your talents when they are needed.”
And so that is what Sorala Barleyes did.
=============
Character Concepts
=============
Titan Mauler: Sorala has been trained in the fighting ways of her great-grandfather, Nedrukk Barleyes, a giantslayer of some renown, and a hero that gave his life at Bloodrun Mesa. She is a cunning fighter who knows how to bloody the noses of those bigger than her, and can tap into her anger to great effect, pushing her body to its limits in a fight. This is represented mechanically by her Giantslayer campaign trait and Titan Mauler Barbarian archetype.
Lore Keeper: Sorala knows the tales of the great titan maulers by heart, and has taken to other tales as well. She retains knowledge well, whether it is stories of myth and legend or local histories. Lately, she’s taken to orating some of her favorites, though not for audiences - yet. This is represented mechanically by ranks in Lore (Giants) and Lore (Sandpoint), and if I progress her as a skald at some point, by ranks in Perform (Oratory) (and the skald class of course).
A Finely Tuned Sense of Injustice: Nothing brings Sorala’s temper to the forefront than something intrinsically unfair. The rich taking advantage of the poor, the strong bullying the weak, and similar displays have earned Sorala a bit of a reputation as a hothead - though one with moral clarity. She tends to side on the side of right, even if it means overlooking some policy and procedure - much to the continued frustration of Sheriff Hemlock. Mechanically, this is represented by Sorala’s CG alignment.
=============
NPCs
=============
Marmie Barleyes, Sorala’s mother: A washerwoman who works for the Kajitsus, Marmie is earnest and hard-working, and doesn’t approve of Sorala’s life choices, though she has resigned herself to them.
Nedrukk Barleyes III, Sorala’s father: The preeminent cobbler in Sandpoint, Nedrukk provides a valuable service to the community, and is honest as the summer day is long. He is secretly very proud of his daughter following in the footsteps of the first Ned, though he’d never admit it to Marmie.
Nellie Barleyes, Sorala’s younger sister: A couple of years her junior, Nellie is quiet and contemplative, and rarely acts without thinking things through from many angles (and thinking on things way too long from Sorala’s perspective). Nellie and Sorala are very close, and Sorala is very protective of her sibling.

I'll be likely making a few changes to my character Nate Goodknight over the week as I refine both backstory/personality, abilities, and equipment.
