Background:
Physical Description:
Vaeldon is a rather handsome young man, with copper-blond hair and hazel eyes. He has a muscular build and frame and walks with the slight swagger of egotistical youth. Vael has a small scar on the left side of his chin he got when he was caught by a hook while fishing with his brother when they were young.

Personality & Quirks:
While charming and generally good natured, Vaeldon can be very intense at times. He is very loyal, and true to his word, if at all possible. He is a naturally gifted swordsman, and enjoys going through his weapon exercises simply for relaxation and fun. Vael can be found most mornings at sunrise in a courtyard working through his stances and saying his prayers.

Backstory:
Vaeldon Grim was born to a family with a famous, if not dangerous, pedigree, even if most people in Sandpoint don’t realize it.

His great-grandfather, Percivat Grimblade was a famous monster hunter, rumored to have been involved in no less than two dragon hunts, and his grandfather, Devlos Grimblade, was a devout paladin in the service of Abadar. Even Vaeldon’s uncle Baerig sought to make a name for himself as an adventurer before his life was cut short on an expedition into some far off crypt with a troupe of mercenaries.

Vaeldon’s father, however, was a far more practical man, who brought his wife and young son to Sandpoint several years ago, seeking anonymity and fresh start, going so far as to shorten his surname to Grim, believing that no respectable scribe and merchant would ever bear the name Grimblade with a straight face.

In this vein, Melias raised his son to one day succeed him in his role as scribe and transcriber for the merchants, officials, and at times, the Great Cathedral in Sandpoint. While he was a reasonably good student in calligraphy and mathematics, it soon became clear to anyone who knew him, that Vaeldon was simply too caught up in stories of knights and adventures to ever really be happy as a clerk or senechal in a small town.

A devout couple, Melias and Daniella decided that it would be best for Vaeldon to begin studies with Brother Crispin, a priest of Abadar, hoping that the boy’s dreams of swordsmen and adventures might be harnessed and tempered into some far more practical way of serving the church, possibly with the boy one day becoming a priest himself.

But in the end, the church and specifically Brother Crispin came to the conclusion that Vaeldon was far more better suited to become a paladin in Abadar’s service. The boy excelled in his studies and day by day it became more and more obvious that Abadar was blessing the boy’s education.

Though Vael proved to be very passionate in his beliefs and dedicated to the church, Brother Crispin also soon came to the conclusion that temple life was not something for which Vaeldon was not well-suited. So the priest eventually encouraged the young man to act as the church’s representative in the City Watch in Sandpoint. Far from thinking this somehow a demotion, Vaeldon takes his job very seriously, and considers it an honor to have even been chosen for the position.

Paladin Code of Abadar:
- I will always protect the innocent, by helping them protect themselves where I can and stepping in personally where I cannot.

- I will always act with honor and honesty. I cannot truly represent my faith if people cannot put their faith in me.

- I respect all lawful authority and understand that different places have laws that I may not agree with, but work for those who reside within. If a law is unlawful, I will work to the best of my ability to show them a better law or way.

- I am a protector of the roadways and keep travelers from harm. No matter their destinations or goals, if they are peaceable and legitimate travelers who harm no others on the road, I will ensure that they pass safely.

- Bandits are a plague. Under my will they come to justice. If they will not come willingly before the law, where they can protest for justice in the courts, they will come under the power of my sword.

- Corruption in the courts is the greatest corruption of civilization. Without confidence in justice, citizens cannot believe in their countries, and civilization begins to disappear. I will root out corruption wherever I find it, and if a system is fundamentally flawed, I will work to aid citizens by reforming or replacing it.

- I am an aid to the markets. I ensure equitable trade between merchants and citizens. Theft on either side is intolerable.

- I make opportunities, and teach others to recognize them. When I aid others, I open the way for them, but will not carry them—they must take responsibility.
