Devil We Know | Burden of Envy | B12 Somewhere Below (GM School)

Over the past year, the Starfinder Society has worked diligently to reverse the damage done by a multimedia smear campaign being waged against it. This work has required Starfinder agents to remain vigilant and be ready to address a variety of situations, sometimes on only a moments notice.

Each of your comm devices begins going off all throughout the day as First Seeker Luwazi Elsebo’s voice breaks the silence. “Starfinders, if you’re receiving this transmission, I’m requesting that you cease your current missions and return to Absalom Station at once. I have obtained urgent information regarding one of our foe’s activities. If she succeeds, she could tip the balance of corporate power within the Pact Worlds and possibly even destroy the Society. I’ll explain once we convene at the Lorespire Complex.”

Table GM’s please begin the Introduction Phase

Devil We Know | Burden of Envy | B12 Somewhere Below (GM School)

Here we go!

The Lorespire Complex’s familiar grounds are in a boisterous state of flux. Hired workers set up pavilions and booths on the lawns, courier vehicles dart back and forth down the adjacent streets, and janitors hustle to prepare rooms for occupation throughout the compound’s buildings. Dozens of early guests loiter nearby chatting excitedly. The festive, yet chaotic, atmosphere persists in stark contrast to the First Seeker’s ominous announcement.

A lashunta man, Venture-Captain Arvin, strides forward to intercept the newest arrivals. “Welcome back, Starfinders. First Seeker Elsebo plans to meet with the agents involved in her operation shortly. She’ll announce when she’s ready—listen for the code phrase ‘pest control.’ It looks like Luwazi is finally going to have us strike back at Datch, the architect of our past year of credibility woes. Regardless of our foe’s machinations, we’re hosting several weeks of conferences and parties to honor Ehu Hadif, and there’s plenty to do while you wait. Let’s get you checked in, shall we?”

This is a good spot for player introductions, purchases, and slot boons as well as preparing the fleet. While preparing the Fleet you will be roleplaying relevant skill checks as well as sharing stories of past adventures. For stories shared you must have the chronicle to back it up.

Recommended Boons to slot:

Following the start of Year 4, players no longer slot boons. Instead, for this adventure, players gain specific benefits.
  • Acquainted with Datch (Ally)
  • Big Win against Big Potion (Slotless)
  • Data Stalker (Social)
  • You can help prepare by meeting with:

  • Venture Captain Naiaj (Buffet Crisis)
  • Celita, Leader of the Dataphiles (Media Boost)
  • Radaszam, leader of the Acquisitives (Media Control)
  • Fitch, leader of the Wayfinders (Sound Check)
  • Zigvigix, Leader of the Exo-Guardians (Valet Pileup)
  • Venture Captain Arvin (VIP Roundup)

The leaders and the relevant skills are posted on Slides.

As a general rule, I will apply the Rule of Two, that is--as long as two players post an agreement to a course of action, I will assume that the entire party goes along with the agreed upon course.

His long hair is tied into a tight bun with a rainbow colored ribbon and a pistol hangs from his hip. Tiny motes of golden light dance around him as he moves.

THE Umbral Dawn is pleased that the Pathfinder Society is finally bringing their might to bear against Datch and her treacherous allies. No longer will we cower, for today we crush our enemies!"

The lashunta poses dramatically as he checks his comm unit. "It appears that THE Umbral Dawn's presence has been requested...in the...cafeteria." He frowns and blinks at the comm unit in disbelief. "That can not be right. How dare they insult THE Umbral Dawn with such frivolities! Someone will suffer for this humiliation!"

With an aggravated shout, the solarion turns on his heels and quickly strides out of the room, loudly complaining out loud to himself.

Since Carson is helping out Radaszam, THE Umbral Dawn will see if his Acrobatics skill can help out Venture-Captain Naiaj

Two votes for Radaszam, so we will start there. Then, if you folks can create a prioritized list, I will just follow that.

As you arrive at the area designated for "Media Control", you find Radaszam, leader of the Acquisitives, viewing a series of screens linked to cameras around the Lorespire Complext.

"We have a potential security breach on the Lorespire Complex’s front lawn," says the vesk, pointing to a camera displaying a group crowding the complex's main walkway, hoisting signs with anti-Society slogans.

“Looks like these people bought in to Datch’s propaganda,” Radaszam grumbles. “They’ve been here all day. We’re not going to make them disperse—please talk with them and work out a peaceful resolution."

    Highest success!

You learn from the demonstrators that despite the Society’s efforts to counteract Datch’s smear campaign, many individuals in the Pact Worlds still distrust their organization.

The PCs have gained valuable insight into the crowd’s behavior. At any point during the adventure, a PC can attempt a Bluff, Diplomacy, or Intimidate check to influence a crowd. Also, once during the adventure when the group encounters a team of two or more adversaries, the group can activate this reward to grant each PC a +4 bonus to their initiative checks for that encounter.

Moving onto Valet Pileup as it is first mentioned and has same number of votes as any other...

Zigvigix, leader of the Exo-Guardians, chats animatedly with one of the hired event staff, a stocky, brown ysoki dressed in stained coveralls embroidered with the name “Tall Sam.” The two avidly discuss a cluster of haphazardly parked land vehicles.

“Hey, you!” The ysoki shouts at you as you approach the scene. “Why are you just standing around, huh? We’ve got a pileup worse than A-Station rush hour over here. Get off your tails, and go park some vehicles!”

Zigvigix nods enthusiastically and adds, “Relieving the valet queue might help our fellow Starfinders get to Luwazi’s meeting. Please do whatever you can to help!”

Solving the problem, your combined efforts give Tall Sam free reign of the Society’s parking garage and starship hangars. With Zigvigix’s permission, Tall Sam modifies several of the parked vehicles.

An average success. Those PCs that have not attempted a check for this preparation encounter may do so in an effort to obtain a higher success, but I want to keep the momentum going in an effort to complete as many of the preparation activities as reasonably possible.

Once during the adventure, the party can flip a boost switch to add a +4 to a single Piloting check during starship combat or a vehicle chase. When using the reward, the starship or vehicle can also move one additional hex or zone.

A chime sounds throughout the Lorespire Complex and its surrounding grounds, followed by a broadcast of First Seeker Luwazi Elsebo’s resonant voice: “Pest-control workers, your presence is kindly requested in the Hall of Discovery.” Spurred by the announcement, junior and experience Starfinders file into the Forum’s meeting space.

As the last of the summoned Starfinders enter the meeting space, Luwazi stands atop a stage at the centre of the hall. Radaszam and Zigvigix position themselves behind the First Seeker, warily surveying the crowd. When the doors shut behind the final Starfinder team, Radaszam steps forward and whispers in Luwazi’s ear. She nods as he offers her a microphone.

“Thanks to your courage and resilience, Starfinders, we have overcome adversity time and again. Two years ago, we embarked on a mission to rescue our lost agents from the Scoured Stars. Last year, we returned to battle the jinsuls and won. Today, I stand before you for the last time as your First Seeker and invite you to accept a very different challenge.

“I trust you are all familiar with the individual called Datch. For the past year, Datch orchestrated a slanderous media war against the Society for reasons incomprehensible to us. We’ve recently learned more about our enemy and realized that the Society is not her only target. As a member of AbadarCorp’s security department, Datch used her connections to manufacture a media smear campaign against us. She did so to gain power within the corporation, and her next target is Executive Archdirector and CEO Iseki-Okaibo. Yesterday, Datch instigated a vote of no-confidence against him. If the motion passes, Datch stands to take advantage of that power vacuum.”

Luwazi frowns at the assembled Starfinders. “We cannot let that happen. We can’t directly challenge Datch—not yet. If we’re going to stop her, we must beat her at her own game. While Datch positions herself to seize power, I plan to use Ehu Hadif’s elevation and the presence of our most veteran agents at the elevation event as a cover to send you on covert missions throughout the Pact Worlds. The missions vary, but your primary goals are to disrupt Datch’s ongoing activities and convince AbadarCorp executives not to support the vote of no-confidence. I’m counting on you, Starfinders.”

Encouraged by the First Seeker’s words, the chosen Starfinder teams prepare to depart the Lorespire Complex for various destinations across the Pact Worlds. Society leaders direct smaller groups of agents into specialized briefings, where they present information about each covert operation. After a year of enduring Datch’s merciless attacks against their organization, the Starfinders finally have the chance to retaliate.

Table GMs, Part 1 has begun.

The VIPs even pool their resources together to offer the group some special swag. The magnanimous Zo! thanks you by gifting you a voucher for a one-time 10% discount on gear or equipment purchased on Absalom Station.

Following the First Seeker's words, you all receive a chirp on your comms indicating that you have been selected for your first assignment in coordination with the elevation event.

During this part of the adventure, each table can choose from one of five covert missions. Each mission takes place in a different part of the Pact Worlds and requires different types of skills and combat abilities. The PCs can attempt the missions in any order, but you should consider starting with missions that best match your PCs’ abilities.

    They are:

Location:Aballon Title: "External Audit" Skills: Starship
Location:The Diaspora Title: "Universal Healthcare" Skills: Combat and investigation
Location:Castrovel Title: "Corporate Culture" Skills: Combat and survival
Location:Absalom Station Title: "The Golden Caper" Skills: Infiltration and hacking

2+ votes for Corporate Culture. May I suggest that the group create a prioritized list, so that I can move from one encounter to the other once an encounter has been resolved?

Zigvigix enthusiastically briefs their team at a table in the corner of the hall. “There’s a lot of moving parts involved in this operation, and I’m thrilled to assign you to this particular mission!”

Zigvigix beams at the assembled agents before continuing. “Cloudview Resort’s famous corporate retreat is taking place right now on Castrovel. Corporations from all over the Pact Worlds send executives there for networking and”— Zigvigix sighs reverently—“team building. Several AbadarCorp board members are attending the retreat. If you join them, I’m sure you’ll have plenty of opportunities to make friends with the executives. Hopefully, you can persuade them to support Iseki-Okaibo and not Datch.”

Zigvigix pauses for a moment before adding happily, “The team-building exercises may be useful for us, too, so enjoy yourselves and learn all you can!”

Within moments, your comm units chime, indicating that Zigvigix has already procured electronic tickets for the Cloudview retreat. Included with the tickets are vouchers for access to the workshop, complimentary meals at the resort’s famous restaurant, and rooms for two nights.

If you ask how Zigvigix managed these accommodations:
The shirren blushes. "I must confess that a tech-savvy friend helped me out."

You travel to Castrovel’s Qabarat spaceport in a Starfinder starship. The resort is a 3-mile hike up Yaro River through the coastal jungle. The humid air is alive with the calls of birds and insects, and though parts of the path are overgrown, the trek to the resort is uneventful.

Arriving at Cloudview Resort, you find the locale is a beautiful and sprawling complex built atop a riverside cliff. It features impressive lofty terracotta buildings with thatched roofs and spacious courtyards.

The hiking trail leads straight to the resort’s visitor’s center, where an android concierge explains that today’s workshop is scheduled to take place in the nearby nature preserve. The concierge advises you to wear comfortable, heat-appropriate attire.

Upon reaching the preserve, you are met by a shocking scene. The once pristine jungle along the resort’s outskirts is a war zone. Guerilla soldiers dressed in khaki fatigues attack another indiscriminately, some organized into small squads while others fight alone. Gunfire rings through the hazy air as individuals of all species battle all around you!

Strangely, no one appears to be firing at you.

    Medicine (DC 16):
You notice that the fallen aren’t severely injured.

Amid the chaos, a humanoid wearing goggles and a ghillie suit pops up from a trench and motions for you to join him.

"I'm Yalus," the man says, his tone pleasant and welcoming. However, it suddenly turns to a tone of suspicion. He demands, "Tell me, what department are you from?"

"I guess it doesn't matter," he then concedes, not quite waiting for an answer. "I've already blown my cover. And, if you were from accounting, I'd almost certainly be 'dead' by now."

"Although, if you are not from accounting and, as far as I can tell, not from advertising, then you probably need to be brought up to speed, right?" Again, he doesn't quite wait for an answer. "This hectic event that you are experiencing around you--this ongoing battle royale--its all part of the retreat. Participants deal nonlethal damage to one another in a struggle to be the last one standing."

"As you, no doubt, already know, I am AbadarCorp’s archdirector of advertising." he declares. "And over there," he points for emphasis, "is Suzi, the the archdirector of AbadarCorp accounting--my sworn frenemy."

"Look, don't tell anyone else--certainly not Suzi--but its like this: I desperately want to use this mock-combat exercise to triumph over Suzi and to prove, once and for all, that advertising is where it's at!" continues Yalus. "So, what do you say? Are you with me? Or are you with Suzi?"

If you agree to help defeat Suzi:
You may attempt a Diplomacy check (or other relevant skill check to demonstrate fighting prowess) to convince Yalus to agree to a favor of your choice.

Then, please provide your Perception and Initiative modifiers as well as other requested information on this slide.

If you DO NOT agree to help defeat Suzi:
    Accounting is where its at!

Also, let me know whether you wish to approach Suzi or to return to the Lorespire Complex.

Then, please provide your Perception and Initiative modifiers as well as other requested information on this slide.

Yalus looks at the lashunta with a confused look. “ ‘Made to kill’?! They assured us that the weapons we were given for this retreat event were non-lethal, even if they do sting a bit.”

“No,” he affirms, “no one is supposed to die at this retreat. Why would you think that? What department are you guys with again?”

“Oh wait, I guess the answer’s obvious," he then concedes, not quite waiting for an answer. [b]“You must all be in collections.”
You can use a weapon that deals nonlethal damage to deal lethal damage instead, but you take a –4 penalty to your attack roll.

“Yeah, beat Suzi at all costs,” Yalus replies. “And if you do really have ‘weapons made to kill’, don’t kill anyone.”

“I am pretty sure that Suzi’s hideout is ahead in that clearing. You flush her out and I will go around for a pincer maneuver to catch that old bear by surprise.” suggest Yuli as he disappears into a patch of thick brush.

Ahead, a deep ravine pierces the southeastern part of the clearing, providing natural shelter. The clearing is bowl-shaped and guarded by steep slopes to the north. At the center, a cluster of stone ruins are reinforced with deadwood and crude sheets of corrugated metal. Thick, viny undergrowth carpets the entire clearing.

    Map now posted on Slides.

Terrain Notes: The entire area is difficult terrain. The cluster of stone ruins is 30 feet tall and requires a DC 25 Athletics to climb.

Frustrated that he can't burn Suzi with awesome fire, the lashunta lets out a war cry and moves forward. The motes floating about him turn dark and black shadows form underneath his eyes as he rushes forward. His nimble feet allow him to easily cross over the rocky terrain. As he steps forward he reaches back and loosens the ribbon tying his hair black. With a flick of his wrist the ribbon bursts into rainbow colored flames.

Nimble Moves lets him ignore 20 feet of difficult terrain per round.

    Reflex save (DC 18) w/ribbon: 1d20 + 6 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 6 + 1 = 8
