Quite. I was personally hoping for protection from evil, because I forgot that it's only natural weapons that an evil summoned creature can't use against someone under that spell. But when I realized it, I was already done with the rolling and just rolled with it.
Verene Tanaquil |
Are the notes about the enemies on the Encounter Map still current or do they need to be updated? I think the white-lined babau is dead/down and removed from the map for instance, and Thesius has done at last count about 79 damage (I think, assuming from descriptions that his first critical threat confirmed and the second one didn't) to the red-lined minotaur but it still only says "mildly hurt."
Worldwound GM |
My notes say the minotaur is still mildly hurt, but it looks like I didn't update them. Yeesh. I'll deal with it when I'm in a better emotional state to do so.
That being said, you are right - the white lined babau is either unconscious or dead, depending on whether Elliot is using nonlethal here.
Verene Tanaquil |
Thanks. Yeah.
Worldwound GM |
It is, in fact, somewhat injured now. The crit didn't confirm, but the first roll hit, so it was a total of 27 damage, I think.
Also, weirdly, as a dwarf, he does still get the +2 on the save vs. create pit despite it not feeling terribly intuitive.
Verene Tanaquil |
Right, 27 damage just from Thesius's last round of attacks against the red-lined minotaur, yes? Not counting all the damage he had previously done to it.
It might make a difference to Elliot's turn if the Droskarite makes or fails that save.
Azira Tal-Shirin |
Do I need to roll anything for being included in the sloped area?
Verene Tanaquil |
I don't think so, Azira. Since we moved to resolving PC turns in post order, I was acting on the assumption that your turn had already happened. You'd have to make the save only if you ended your turn there next turn. But also, you could only fail it on a 1.

Quick note from me, I was recently promoted again at work, and while that's great for my career, this new position has greatly eaten into my writing time the last two-three weeks. I'm going to try and start posting again this Saturday, but please bot me if Elliot is holding things up. He attacks the nearest viable enemy with the same attack and damage values as his last round.
Thesius Monteblanc |

I should note, I need to start applying a -1 to Thesius attack rolls with the longspear. He's got the buckler which interferes with it.
I'll keep him losing haste in mind as well.
Worldwound GM |
Congrats, Elliot! I'll try to get a post up botting Elliot shortly.
And yes, Verene is correct - no need for Azira to roll, though she would only fail on a natural 1. She's also correct in that the minotaur has the 27 damage in addition to the damage Thesius already dealt to it.
Verene Tanaquil |
Hey, congratulations, Elliot! I hope the new position goes well.
Merixia |
Congratulations, Elliot! Here's hoping the transition goes smoothly and your coworkers are pleasant (or at least tolerable) to work with.
Verene Tanaquil |
With keen edge up on a scimitar, Elliot's critical threat range is 15-20, meaning each of those three rolls is a critical threat.
Worldwound GM |

For the record (and because I have a moment to spare with my other game), the half-fiend minotaurs can fly, and thus wouldn't fall into the pit. I assume. Unless there's some other weird rules stuff that I'm missing.
Post should hopefully be coming tomorrow.
Verene Tanaquil |
Aw. No, that's fair.
Also, I noticed something from your last post, about Verene insulting the dwarf. She didn't mean to insult him, but the demons he's working for. I might not have conveyed that clearly.
Worldwound GM |
Oops. That's probably a misunderstanding on my part, too. We'll just pretend he misunderstood, too. Maybe he misheard her!
It totally wasn't me reading too quickly.
Elliot, the Red Heron |
@Gm with haste, Elliot should have 4 attacks. Normal, iterative, haste, and spell combat/spellstrike. The latter in practise is usually just Brand/another basic attack for sake of simplicity.
Worldwound GM |
Gotcha. Thanks, Elliot.
As a reminder to myself - when you guys next get back to camp, Thesius will receive the righteous medal of command, because he's helped redeem Nurah and convinced her to join up with this raid.
If anyone else feels they significantly contributed there, please let me know, since I don't have the wherewithal to go scrolling desperately to look for that scene at the moment.
Verene Tanaquil |
What scene/conversation are you referring to, GM?
Worldwound GM |
Convincing Nurah to join up - not sure whether the following morning meeting had any significant contribution to doing so.
Thesius Monteblanc |
Thesius kind of made it a point to go out and keep seeing Nurah since she was captured. So he played a major role in getting her to try another path.
Congrats Elliot!
I'm not sure if Thesius will ever manage to get the medal for taking a demon out before it got to act.
Worldwound GM |
Yep, Thesius is definitely getting that medal (for all that she's not actually redeemed yet, and is still evil). I don't think anyone else is at the moment.
Verene Tanaquil |
This morning meeting? I believe that Thesius, Elliot and Verene talking to Nurah at that time was the first time the idea of her coming with us into the citadel was brought up to her.
I don't object to Thesius earning the redemption medal at all. He has definitely had the most on-screen conversations with her since she was spared. But Verene was significantly responsible for Nurah being spared instead of executed, and has also made it a point to check in with her and take watches (in which they could chat, but did not do so on-screen) guarding her and the three captured tiefling soldiers since her spying was discovered and she was taken prisoner — for example here, here, here, here and here. Verene has specifically been doing so and also asked for Arles Jhestander to be on duty with Nurah as much as possible because she was thinking about the possibility of guards harassing or abusing Nurah and wanted to organize matters to prevent that.
If that is not enough to be considered a meaningful contribution to her redemption, I would appreciate some guidance on what you expect instead, GM.
Azira Tal-Shirin |
Am I correct in thinking that it would be almost impossible for the large-sized, winged Minotaurs to squeeze through the door into this room with no floor to stand on?
If so, I’ll focus on killing what’s in the room already, but if they’re gonna be on us in a round or two anyways I can easily leap the pit and start killing them in the hallway.
Worldwound GM |
I'd say that's a good contribution, Verene. She didn't have as much a direct hand in persuading her to join the crusade, but it seems fair to me.
Azira: I'll say it'll take them a full round action to get through with the pit in the way, because they can get through, but it'd leave them unable to otherwise act as they maneuver their wings and stuff through.
Azira Tal-Shirin |
Shoot. I must have counted wrong- I didn't think it could reach me without coming through the door.
I don't have time for a real post right now but I wanted to quickly say:
1) I don't need to ready an action to parry, but I am supposed to declare the attempt before the result of the attack is revealed (which is not practical in PbP). Azira did not take the minotaurs very seriously, so we can say she didn't bother trying to parry that attack.
2) Veil of Heaven gives me an extra +2 sacred bonus to AC (up to 34) against evil outsiders... I don't remember if that's supposed to apply to half-fiends or not (since iirc they're native outsiders and probably don't have the evil subtype), but either way I'll take the hit (she earned it, lol).
Worldwound GM |
One can just reach her through the doorway, unfortunately.
Yeah, veil of heaven doesn't apply to half-fiends, who are native outsiders without the evil subtype, unfortunately.
And yes, she was kind of asking for that. :P
Verene Tanaquil |
Uh... Hm. While I love the channeling idea, unless Azira has that Selective Channeling feat, it's now time for the GM to do a lot of math surrounding all the non-lethal damage Elliot has explicitly been doing and that caused some of his targets to go unconscious instead of dying. Everything in the room will be hit by that 30' burst. And while several of the enemies, like Staunton and Red Minotaur, are definitely dead, Worldwound GM did describe others as going unconscious instead. Unfortunately they're not marked on the map anymore, so I can understand the confusion, Azira.
Would now be a good time to point out the rule that all additional non-lethal damage taken past the threshold of the creature's total HP becomes lethal damage? Basically, Elliot sufficiently overkilled all his targets that they still might not wake up, but a calculation of all the lethal vs nonlethal damage they took from all sources since the fight began could be required.
Worldwound GM |
Oh, crap. I'm totally not going to do that calculation for figuring out whether any of the unconscious things are dead (not helped by the deletion of some of the information I had on some of them). And I think a couple of the ones he's knocked out are babaus - including the ones that jumped in on the first round.
Strictly speaking, I don't think the red minotaur is actually dead yet. It's close, but it's still dying. Staunton was dead outright, though, so healing's not gonna help him.
I don't believe anyone has selective channelling at the moment.

Azira Tal-Shirin |
If it simplifies things, I could just use LoH on myself twice (once as a swift and once as a standard) instead? As a player I forgot there were unconscious-but-not-dead creatures because they weren’t on the map, but Azira would, presumably, be able to see them, and probably know better than to channel energy in that situation.
Or, I can change my round, just let me know your preference please (GM).
Worldwound GM |
Mathematically, I'd appreciate you double healing yourself, but I am willing to take Verene's math (thanks so much, Verene, for that), so I'd be willing to let you do the channel if you want to.
Worldwound GM |
Oh, and I didn't realize you were delaying there, Azira. I've adjusted my initiative order appropriately.
Verene Tanaquil |
Sure thing, GM. Realized something after posting that last night: White Babau was last standing in a space that is now one of those sloping down to the pit, and will auto-fail the Reflex save, so its unconscious body should be fallen down into the 40' pit with Cleric Vhane as of its initiative count in Round 3. I believe the babaus were on the initiative count right after Thesius, so that has already happened this round, with associated 4d6 damage. So if the channel happens, White Babau is out of range along with Cleric Vhane.
Azira Tal-Shirin |
It was not my intention to delay at all. When I said I was using my standard action to channel after some more taunting I meant the taunting I had included already in the post (about those being big words for something afraid to enter the room). I would like to take my whole turn at the same time, at my original initiative order.
Regarding channeling... thank you Verene for all that forensic accounting, but figuring out damage and which ones might be revived isn't even the whole problem- we'd also need to remember/reconstruct where each one fell to figure out where they are when the awoke, and then figure out what to do if two are in the same square, or a square with a PC...
For simplicity sake, I'll just double heal myself and we can move on (apologies to those who were excited for those extra hp).
Worldwound GM |
I actually do recall where most of the enemies fell.
That being said, I'm happy to let you go with a second heal. Of course, I also shouldn't have had anyone go if you weren't done with your turn. I'm not quite sure what that'd end up looking like at this point, since, well, you should either have double healed before their actions (which is fair) or done both heals after (which would be delaying).
Unless I'm terribly confused. Well, no, I am in a state of perpetual confusion, but I think that's how it would have to play out. I might be wrong, though.
Azira Tal-Shirin |
Oh my gosh… I’m an idiot. The confusion is 100% my fault. For some reason I thought it was back to my turn again already, even though you clearly stated that it was just Thesius and Merixia's turns. Yikes. I would like to take the stated actions when my turn comes back around, please.

Oh wow, I definitely also misunderstood your last two gameplay posts to be intended to be part of your Round 3 turn, Azira. Sorry I didn't catch that, glad it's cleared up.
Incidentally, I made markers for each of the unconscious enemies and placed them in their last known locations — the locations are available to see by looking at the version history of the Google doc. I made them letters, not tokens, to avoid confusion with conscious enemies.
Thesius Monteblanc |
I've been keeping an eye on the discussion. So does that mean Azira is still in melee of the minotaur?
Worldwound GM |
Azira: Aha! Okay, that makes a lot more sense. Sorry for the confusion.

Appreciated, Verene.
Thesius: Well, the minotaur isn't within Azira's reach, but the minotaur can definitely reach her, albeit with partial cover (thanks to the doorway).

I apologize for the chaos the non-lethal damage has caused here :') That said though with there being multiple creature types present with multiple damage resistances, nonlethal/merciful is unironically Elliot's best damage enchantment since it isn't resisted and demoralises or fightens enemies on a hit.
Worldwound GM |
Huh. I think Righteous Eclipse being cold iron counteracts most of the DR of things here, but yeah, the varying elemental resistances make it much harder to push that extra damage through.
Elliot, the Red Heron |
Huh. I think Righteous Eclipse being cold iron counteracts most of the DR of things here, but yeah, the varying elemental resistances make it much harder to push that extra damage through.
Yeah, the problem is that the natural resistances of fiends counters pretty much all elemental enhancements that magusses can normally use to increase damage. Elliot can only really use Bane, Merciful, Keen and increasing the base enhancement bonus as viable options. If he already has Keen from a spell and his to hit being a bit superfluous, there's only really Bane and Merciful (imo).
Verene Tanaquil |

I looked this up last night to make sure of my memory and apparently I was wrong. Even unconscious/helpless enemies still get to make a Reflex save, albeit with an effective Dex of 0. So, minus any usual bonus from Dex and with an additional -5 penalty on top of that. But I guess it could roll a 20.
Elliot, the Red Heron |
If it matters, that probably means it also takes fall damage which could knock it out again. Unless babaus can fly.
Verene Tanaquil |
No fly speed, but they can teleport at will. And falling down will mean it's in range to be healed by Vhane. :')
Worldwound GM |
2 people marked this as a favorite. |
This is an excellent point... I'm just going to roll that here so I remember. Babau Reflex, unconscious: 1d20 ⇒ 20.
Huh. I... didn't expect that. Well, that's probably for the best? Although it would definitely have taken the 4d6 damage, which might've killed it, meaning Vhane couldn't have healed it, and now it might be able to be healed by Azira, if she sticks with the channel.
Worldwound GM |
I am holding off on posting until Merixia does so, but if she doesn't do so within the next few hours, I'll bot her and move us forwards.
