Me too. I believe I had said before that the section that I was running was not particularly challenging, so I suggested that we put off levelling until after the next adventure.

Sorry for any delays, we’re on vacation.
No worries -- it's actually a long weekend here in Canada. Today is [irl=https://www.canada.ca/en/canadian-heritage/campaigns/national-day-truth-reconciliation.html]Truth and Reconciliation Day[/url, which (essentially) is a day for considering the horrors of colonialism and ongoing genocide in Canada. So... not particularly celebratory, despite the day off work...
Anywhoo! Hope you are enjoying your vacation! :D

Don't forget that the one that attacked me (that I hit) has disadvantage if it attacks anyone but me.
When you hit a creature with a melee weapon attack, you can mark the creature until the end of your next turn. This effect ends early if you are incapacitated or you die, or if someone else marks the creature.
While it is within 5 feet of you, a creature marked by you has disadvantage on any attack roll that doesn’t target you.
In addition, if a creature marked by you deals damage to anyone other than you, you can make a special melee weapon attack against the marked creature as a bonus action on your next turn. You have advantage on the attack roll, and if it hits, the attack’s weapon deals extra damage to the target equal to half your fighter level.

Hey Quominor,
This is probably just because I don't know enough about your subclass, but can you let me know:
- How do you have proficiency in heavy armour?
- Why you have 2nd level cleric spells instead of 2nd level sorcerer spells (you are C1 / S4, right) ?
(sorry -- first combat means first time I'm actually looking at character sheets closely)

Turquoise 'Turq' Barreltap AL |

On Mythweavers, it looks like he is 1 level of cleric. Depending on the domain, he could get Heavy Armor training from there.
If he is a Divine Soul sorcerer, he can take cleric spells (they are added to his spell list.)

DM Paguroid |

Oh okay okay, that makes sense
Quominor's Domain isn't listed, but I think it has to be "Order" based on other abilities. And you're right about the Divine Soul sorcerer -- I remember he mentioned that a while ago.
Thanks -- sorry for the confusion!

Turquoise 'Turq' Barreltap AL |

In that case, I checked Order domain and they get Heavy Armor Training.

Turquoise 'Turq' Barreltap AL |

Yes. The Proficiency bonus only applies to the Attack bonus (to Hit).

It's really, I think, to prevent damage to get too far out of hand (as it is, the amount of damage this group does in a round is impressive!).
It is a bit counter-intuitive, though -- you'd think as you become more skillful / proficient, you would be able to inflict more damage. Though I guess in D&D, that's accounted for by accumulating other kinds of skills, rather than straight damage (and damage goes up if you can hit more often).
I actually really enjoy the OSR way, where your damage is reflective of your training. So, it doesn't matter what weapon you wield, whether dagger or crossbow or 2H sword, the amount of damage depends solely on your class and level. Which makes sense, in a way -- if I'm a wizard, why would I be able to do as much damage as a fighter with the same weapon; if I'm a fighter, presumably I've had basic training with a variety of weapons or, minimally, that training is applicable across weapon groups (maybe I've never used a scimitar before, but it's a bit like a curvy saber...).
So, the weapon your fighter uses is suddenly just a matter of flavour -- if you want to play a Drax the Destroyer-style character, you don't have to worry about letting your party down because you want to use a 1d4 dagger instead of a 2d6 greatsword.

DM Paguroid |

(1d12 + 6) * 2 every round is pretty great, I think!
I mean, you're always subject to the dice rolls, but your chances to hit and damage are really pretty good.
Unlike earlier editions, though, I think 5e really placed a lot of emphasis on survivability at Level 1, so things don't ramp up quickly because characters are a lot tougher early on. I came back to D&D after a long (almost 20 year) hiatus, and by playing Pathfinder for a year first. And in PF1 (I haven't played PF2 yet), levelling up felt like a big change every time -- it feels much more gradual in D&D 5e. (Of course, levelling up in PF1 had its own problems -- there were so many options and things to track, that it would take me nearly an entire day to sort it out.)
Anyway, as a group, you all contribute, and together do a huge amount of cumulative damage. This is something for me to keep in mind because, although I like a good balance of combat with the RP, I find it kind of boring if there are no stakes to the game (like, why even have combat encounters if they are going to be over in the first round). Anyway, that doesn't mean as a DM that I plan to be excessively brutal (that's just not in my personality), but I want you to enjoy yourselves too. And, especially because I haven't DMed in a long time, I'm looking to find that balance -- you'll have to let me know how I do!

DM Paguroid |

No worries! I just haven't kept up with all of the newer subclasses / domains, so wasn't sure.

I think fights should be a bit of a challenge, sometimes necessitating a pause to rest and recover or some other action that makes us players think and take stock of what might be coming up before we react. But not so much we have to retreat back to town and start over (it is after all a game). Dunno the last few fights, before this part of the adventure, were maybe a bit easy but we've got some excellent role players so it keeps being enjoyable.

Turquoise 'Turq' Barreltap AL |

I really wanted something that could do more damage as a main melee and I am not hitting and not damaging well with this
Netz, don't forget that you can Reckless Attack, allowing you to take all attacks at advantage. This is especially helpful when Raging, because even though enemies will have advantage to hit you, you should be taking half damage anyway!
Did you take the Ancestral Guardian primal path? If so, remember that you can also 'mark' one of the enemies so that they have disadvantage when attacking anyone but you...

Happy (Canadian) Thanksgiving!
It gets cold and dark up here much sooner than a lot of the US (today's high is 13C/55F, sunrise to sunset is about 11 hours), so this is definitely harvest season for us. Climate change is allowing me to stretch out the harvesting of my garden -- just a few years ago, we'd have had a killing frost mid-September...
Hope you are all doing well!

Umikh Ironbender |

Happy Thanksgiving! Yeah a lot of folks here in Ohio still have the mindset of pulling up everything with the first temp drop which is nuts. We've shifted a whole growing zone, I'll be harvesting leafy greens, herbs and celery until late November if it's like last year. Unsure if the pepper plants will do anything else but the few carrots left are safe in the ground for now. The cherry tomato plant is just chipmunk food at this point :-p
What do you like to grow?

Turquoise 'Turq' Barreltap AL |

Starting Wednesday, I will be out for a week. We are going to Japan to visit the in-laws.
Happy Thanksgiving! Not to make any of you jealous, but I am in sunny Hawaii, so we don't get seasons like you folk. ^_^ Just rainy season and sunny season. ;)

DM Paguroid |

lol -- yeah, Hawai'i must be nice (Japan too -- always planned to visit). I don't mind the winter so much -- I'm not from this part of Canada, so I'm used to a lot of wet, heavy snow. It's a lot colder and drier in Alberta than the east coast.
I'm still experimenting with the garden -- I just moved here a couple of years ago and there are new raised beds with soil that still needs fixing. There's also not as much space as I've had in the past, but the advantage there is that I'm not run ragged trying to weed and harvest...
So, this year (most years, recently), I've got a lot of peas and beans, cherry tomatoes (I prefer plum, but other than one plant, they did not do so well this time); like, maybe 20 carrots...; some pattypan and butternut squash; and a patch of kale and assorted lettuce.
We use a lot of herbs in our cooking, but I've not been very successful growing them so far. Ditto for garlic. Not sure if I'm doing something wrong or it's the soil.
.... okay, obviously I could talk about gardening for a long time....

Umikh Ironbender |

LOL I could talk forever about plants and dogs.
FWIW I have much better luck growing herbs in a garden than in a pot. I think they don't like a lot of fussing?

About to go on vacation for about a week. Please bot me if necessary!

Rodalas Windrace |

Sorry last week and the beginning of this week were nuts. My school has 22 day terms with exams so last TH was finals day and grades were due on Monday where we had an all day meeting.

Turquoise 'Turq' Barreltap AL |

I'm back! Will be mostly catching up with work, but I will try to chime in today.

Turquoise 'Turq' Barreltap AL |

Mostly, but age caught up to me near the end. Got whiplash from a roller coaster... >.<

DM Paguroid |

I don't like rollercoasters, so that's not a worry for me.
I did, however, manage to put out my back while helping my neighbour fix their toilet this weekend -- thanks middle-age...

Greycastle |

Lol. You guys are killin me. I fell asleep on the couch wrong and now I’ve got a pinched nerve in my neck I’m working on. Lol

DM Paguroid |

We are aging like a fine vinegar.
That sounds about right, lol
Happy Hallowe'en, gang! We don't tend to go too hard on it (especially without a kid to take around this year), but we did carve up some pumpkins and handed out chips and chocolate to about 30 kids.
