With ritual spells, are they always ritual in DnD, or can the caster choose to cast them with a much shorter casting time like other spells? I noticed Speak with Animals is a ritual spell in DnD, and I was curious about that.

Ritual spells can be cast with a spell slot for the casting time listed in the spell description. Alternatively, a ritual spell (if prepared unless you are a wizard who simply needs the spell in their book) can be cast without utilizing a spell slot at a cost of an additional 10 minutes to the casting time.

You can use the book as a spellcasting focus for your wizard spells.

In order to change the element of a Fireball you would need to know another 3rd level spell such as Lightning Bolt. Then based on my reading of the newly bolded text, you could have a Fireball that does lightning damage.

Yes. The damage types available to any spell being cast is based on the spell pool of whatever spell level the slot you are using. That is the way I read it anyway.

I still have my 2 uncommon items to claim, and also wanted to check in about Mell’s backstory and the killers she is seeking, specifically whether there are any concrete clues you want her to have about them based on future planned encounters.

I’m happy to wait on the new items until our third new person is checked in and ready if it’s easier for you to give those out to us new folk all at once, mostly just wanted to remind you those still need to be doled out before we’re ready to go.

Got it. Still very useful with chromatic orb and magic missile being in the book.

I guess the next question is back to one I had in the recruitment thread. I assume the Arcane Grimoire I selected for Avendryl is the implement of choice. What do you mean by uncommon item of choice? Is that an additional uncommon, non-weapon, non-implement magic item or it is something else entirely?

Could this additional item be switched out for additional spells in his spellbook? The only ones I have listed in his book currently are the ones he would have had at level 1 plus the 2 learned at each of levels 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6.

I'm sorry about that, Grey. When I tried to search on DnD uncommon items, all I found was magic items. I think Mell can make do with a quarterstaff and just cast Shillelagh on it if she needs a weapon, but I wasn't sure what you meant by implement.

Of the two items I selected, I'd definitely prefer to keep the bag of tricks - for the other item, I just tried to pick something that didn't feel overtly like a magic item, but I'm honestly negotiable about it.

If you can point me to a list of implements, I'm happy to take a look and choose something.

Go back and delete that post.

Looks like everyone has checked in. Ill be getting a post together this weekend. We will be starting back in Good Mead. The company has just arrived from Kelven's Cairn and are meeting but up with Baldrick here at the Mead Hall. Only thing I'm unsure of here is whether Greycastle has a plan for how we all meet. Turq, Rodalas, Umikh, and Baldrick (and Khitt, now an NPC) have been adventuring together for some time. Baldrick hung back from the previous adventure (bc I was DMing), and set up a small forge in Good Mead. If any of you new folks happened to need a smith, that could be an entry into the group; otherwise, possibly Greycastle has a plan for how we get together at the local pub.

That is what I thought but for some reason D and D Beyond was not doing the math for me.

Mell’s a leatherworker (and herbalist) who wears light armor, so she wouldn’t need a smith. She’s on the track of the murderers of her husband and son, and I figure a lead about them took her to Good Mead, where she got another lead saying those she seeks are heading to the Spine of the World. I figure she’s sharp enough to know she needs companions, and has stopped by the pub we’re starting at hoping to hear of anyone heading that way she can travel with.

Whether she’s had a conversation yet with Gideon and Avendryl about their immediate plans I can roll with either way, but at the very least, I figure she’s introduced herself to them since Greycastle said we were already a trio.

As for the rest of the party, I was assuming you were meeting an NPC quest-giver in Good Mead or one of the nearby Ten Towns who would give you a job in the Spine of the World and Mell would hear you talking about it and want to join, but of course, Grey may have something else in mind. I’ll do my best to roll with whatever he gives us.

As for your spells, based on Xanathar’s, I’m going to say you found an old spell book in your travels that you were able to scribe all of the spells out of.
You can choose 6 first level spells and 1 second level spell to add.

I’m glad to see everyone’s excitement to get started. I’ll be posting the starting post today. Yesterday was busy with two different events and a postponed date night dinner all stuffed into one day, but nothing going on to stop me today.

I am thinking Mell, Gideon and Avendryl have already been teamed up at least for the least their adventure. If you guys want to improvise that backstory a bit, that’s fine with me.

Here would be an idea, if Avendryl and Gideon are open to it. The three of us met in Good Mead when Mell came into town, and Aven and Gideon helped her get the lead about the murderers heading to the Spine of the World. I figure her quest might appeal to Gideon as a matter of justice and Avendryl as a way to earn trust with the locals. (Mell’s a Ten Towns native, and in fact has never before traveled further than Bryn Shander).

We three are at the pub the night we got the lead, and Mell wants to ask you both about your near-term plans, as she hopes you might accompany her to the Spine of the World. And that’s when we encounter the main party.

Intro posts are up. I imagine Baldrick will be the first to notice his friends walk in but feel free to play how you like. Introduce yourselves and do some roleplay. The Mead Hall is warm and the food and drink are good.

oh, also. If can you make sure you have a character link and background info on you're character tab here on the sight please. As an example I had to go back to the recruitment thread to read Avendryl's backstory. Updating your statline over your avatar would also be helpful but not super critical.

Where are you at, Rodalas? We had some winds today, too, with poor visibility and a few traffic lights that went down near me for a bit, but as far as I know, no residences lost power.

It's such a pain when the power goes down, but I'm glad it wasn't too long of an outage.
