Arbiter of the Tower |

@Everyone: I just realized there was something I wanted to say upfront and forgot! I’m going to typically favor RAI over RAW when they seem like different things. One example of this is flurry of blows or brawler’s flurry where you can make extra attacks using the same weapon. Many feats and powers that require you not make any kind of off-hand attack to use point out that they don’t work with flurry (like the graceful strike feat or the paizo feats it replaced) but some of them (like swashbuckler’s precise strike) require a free hand but don’t explicitly address things like flurry... I’m going to rule against using things like precise strike with things like flurry. I don’t think that effects any of the currently submitted builds but I want to be upfront about it before it potentially becomes an issue. If you have any other ideas that might fall into a similar category you may want to run them by me before you go too far with them.
@Brunhild- that’s an interesting prestige class... there isn’t really a tyrannical queen with a connection to devils in Cardriss currently. Are you hoping that we could add one or that you’d be allow to ignore or reflavor all the devil stuff?

BelacRLJ |
For background purposes: You explained that almost no history at all is known from before the cataclysm.
1) Are there stories, however unreliable and unverifiable, from before that?
2) How far back does actually reliable history go?
As my guy (still thinking of a name) is all about the Vestige heritage, I'd want to figure out if this was pre-cataclysm legend or semi-traceable history from around the time of the cataclysm. I'd prefer it to be the former, as there's more time and allowance for revisionism and forgetting, but I'd rely on you for specifics.

Storm Dragon |

@Storm Dragon- I can't speak for other GMs but personally have 2 main concerns. First, the flavor of most of the occult classes feels kind of specific to me (since they're intended largely for horror type games, and mostly have a much later, maybe even Victorian feel) and that doesn't really fit with the feel of Cardriss. Second, I'm just not as familiar with them as classes so it's harder for me to design encounters for them and I can't really predict how they'll interact with things like the extra power/abilities characters will gain throughout the background quest.
In this case, I'd be throwing out a Battle Host or Panoply Savant Occultist, who draws their power from his ancestral weapons; he'd probably be from the Northreach or Vinland regions.
In terms of how to design challenges...shouldn't be an issue. The main quirk would be that he's a Pseudo-full BaB 6 caster, but with a limited spell list, so he has casting up to 6th level spells (like a Bard or Magus), more than 3/4 but I believe usually less than full BaB due to his Panoply, but he'd only have access to something like 3-4 of the magic schools instead of all of them.
If that sounds acceptable I'll get to work on it, if not, I'll bow out.

Arbiter of the Tower |

@Javell- what is a “Paueliel tower shield”? I tried looking for it on the archives and on d20pfsrd and couldn’t find it.
@Belac-
1) yeah, lots of fairytales and religious stories (and things like that) are set before recorded history (aka before the calamity), but their reliability is extremely suspect.
2) the year is 521 (nearing 522) and the current calendar pretty closely corresponds with when recorded history starts.
3) the Atlaeans believe they are the remnant of a vast and powerful ancient empire, so that’s one huge potential tie-in. If you’d rather look at something smaller like a family hero or something we could talk about how to work that.
@Storm Dragon- as I’ve said all along, if you really want to apply with an occult class you can try it and if I like it enough I may make an exception. That offer still stands but bear in mind that you’ll have to have a character so outstanding that I want them over all of the other applicants despite their class.

Snow. |

Considering using this alias to submit a shifter for your interest. (Hi Val!) A higher level game with special powers sounds like fun!
A question regarding ABP if I may. Bonuses to armor/weapons is subtracted from the attunement bonus if the cost is measured in bonus. If you dont have enough then you can wield the weapon but only get its powers, no enhancement. On the d20pfsrd it specifically referenced weapons, although I assume the same applies to armor.
Given that, if I want Wild armor (a +3 bonus cost) do I simply declare that my armor is wild? If so then presumably wearing it in human form Id have +2 armor because of the level 9 armor attunement and then when wildshaped Id have effectively +0 Wild armor? Is that how you'd rule it? I'm happy to pay a flat gp cost instead/in addition if you think thats more suitable.

Arbiter of the Tower |

@Snow- (Welcome, Niko) Sadly, weapon and armor enchants are one of the areas where ABP breaks down a bit (imo). On the archives of Nethys version it does say "magic item" not weapon, so armor definitely does work the same way. For the Wild enchant, that costs +3 all the time so if you got (for example) wild hide armor it would cost 9,165g (9k for the enchant and 165 for masterwork hide) and it would always (regardless of your form) function as masterwork hide with no enhancement bonus (until 15th level when your attunement bonus reaches +4 and it always functions as +1 hide). I may try to devise a better system for that at some point (when the party has more resources and I need to worry about it more, lol) but for now we're sticking with those rules as written. edit: Since the attunement bonus on clothing is basically bracers of armor (which work while in wildshape) I would probably let you keep the attunement bonus while shifting if you wanted to forego the wild armor. Obviously, you'd lose the base armor bonus that way but depending on what type of armor you were thinking about taking that might still work out alright?

BelacRLJ |
Thanks for clarifying.
Atlaean sounds good, perhaps a specific ruling lineage that had been deposed long prior to the cataclysm (like a descendant of Harold Godwinson or the House of Stuart, or the Atreids of Ancient Greece, if the cataclysm happened tomorrow in our world).
So their family legend would be the Atlaean beliefs plus private grievances against other Atlaeans for wrongs allegedly done before the cataclysm, which obviously they have to swallow since they can’t be meaningfully redressed. But as living evidence that there’s something special to this family, he’d feel worthy to enter the Tower.

Arbiter of the Tower |

@Belac- that sounds fine
@Cucumber- for something that was 'only' 5-6 centuries ago, there is surprisingly little known about it, and virtually nothing known for certain. It's not talked (or written) about very often and it almost seems as if the whole of Cardriss collectively decided to try to forget about it. If they had YouTube there would definitely be conspiracy theory videos about both how it was just a weak cover for something else that happened, and how someone or something was purposefully covering up the details of the cataclysm, lol.

Zorblag |

So I've been following the thread and tinkering with a dan bong using brawler that I probably won't submit as I don't think I can get her to have enough utility beyond being a good melee/ranged striker (which doesn't seem like it contributes enough to what the group would need.) That's mostly neither her nor there though, I'm posting to make sure that you know about the ABP alternative for magic weapons and armor that was posted when Unchained came out. It gives another way to allow for magic weapons and armor to have attributes like flaming and the like while still giving characters the chance to use their full enhancement bonuses. It's a bit more expensive for characters that want to do it, but it's perhaps a compromise that might be what you're looking for. I'm running an ABP game and have been using it and like it a bit better than the default system even if it's slightly more complicated to get a handle on at first.

Arbiter of the Tower |

Thanks for that Zorblag. I’m not sure that I’ll use those exactly but it’s definitely helpful in thinking about options for how to address it.
Everyone
Interest seems to be slowing down a bit. That may just be because of the time of week or whatever, but it may also be that we’ve heard from pretty much everyone who’s interested. If things pick up towards the end of the week I’ll keep recruitment going, but if it stays slow I’ll probably end it over the weekend. Also, I’m hoping to get a list up of everyone who’s applied (and what, if anything, they’re missing) but this week was unexpectedly busy at work so I haven’t had a chance yet; hopefully I’ll have it up tomorrow.

Javell DeLeon |

@Arbiter: Wow, I did not realize it doesn't exist in Nethys or d20. It's out of the Inner Sea World guide(Which dates back to 2011). I'm guessing it's probably something they have done away with which would make sense seeing how it's nowhere outside of Pathfinder Wiki.
You know, I'm going to switch to Darkwood. It's just simpler. If I would've known it basically doesn't exist anymore, I would've never taken it in the first place. :P

Arbiter of the Tower |

@polyfrequencies- you've got (at least) until the weekend, and remember as I said in the first post you don't need to be completely finished to submit.
@jonathan- I'm all for people posting what they really want to play but I would like to make sure you saw the warning in the initial post... you're going into a tower and an animal companion (especially a large one) could become really problematic for you.
@trevor- enjoy your new games!

GermanyDM |

Deguís, human inquisitor of Torag, has a surprisingly sunny disposition for an inquisitor. He is quick to praise a well-made piece of workmanship. He's also quick to condemn and even destroy an item of shoddy construction being sold as though it weren't, which has gotten him into a few arguments in marketplaces around the continent. It's also given him a reputation for spotting excellence and gotten him invited to adjudicate competitions and approval the work of those hoping for acceptance into craftspersons' guilds, not because he's particularly mindful of rules, which should be bent when needed, but because he knows that things well done lead to contentment, satisfaction and general well-being.
While he prides himself on his attention to detail--which includes his personal grooming--he's by no means a 'lone wolf'. He sees himself as more of a Westfall army knife, with a tool for every occasion and makes lasting contacts and friends in each community he visits. He's happy to let others take the spotlight, but he has no fear of rolling up his well-made sleeves and getting his manicured hands dirty.

Pestrina |

Zorblag here. I've decided that I will submit my brawler that I've been playing around with. Here's Pestrina (who's mostly complete, though I need to type up some sections of the character sheet and finish a bit of equipment) for your consideration.
Pestrina is dan bong specialized brawler/weapon master. She would act as strength based melee or ranged striker with the ability to adapt to combat situations as needed with martial flexibility. She also has some scouting and trap finding/removal ability, though no way to deal with magic. If there’s something that needs to be broken down or into, she should be able to do that most of the time.
Pestrina, the Pest, was probably born in a city in Southern Vinland, though she has no memory of it and her parents, whoever they might have been, were gone from her life from her birth. Growing up first in an orphanage, and then, on the streets after running away, she got by among the gangs of children as best she could. A clever child, when she wasn’t stealing what she needed to survive she was working out how the things around her worked with an eye towards anything mechanical in particular. It was while she was in the process of dismantling the lock on a rich merchant’s villa that the city guard, long aware and barely tolerant of her presence, finally determined that the city’s Pest had crossed a line and set out to make her disappear for good.
Pestrina fled, barely avoiding capture and making it out of the city. Once in the hills the young girl was quickly found by a band of bandits who gave her little chance but to join them which she did. As a conscripted bandit the Pest was used for reconnaissance and distraction at first, taking advantage of passing caravans assumptions that a lone child needed help rather than representing a threat. Eventually, despite the general neglect and lack of attention, the leaders of the bandit troupe realized that their Pest had a knack for the mechanical and could serve them more profitably in other ways. She was reassigned to break into any chests or boxes and haul out treasure while the rest of the bandits attacked and distracted whatever forces might be guarding their targets.
Life as a bandit was rough, but Pestrina was tough and smart enough to survive it for several years until, during what seemed like a standard raid on a a traveling mercenary company, she was captured in the act of opening the treasure boxes at the center of their camp while the main raid was going on. It was her good luck that she was caught by Finn, leader of the famous Finn’s Company who saw that there was potential in the young thief's skills. The bandits, having vastly underestimated their target, were scattered and Pestrina was given the choice to join the company or be turned in to the guards at the next town. That wasn’t really a choice at all and Pestrina was counted as a member of Finn’s company from then on.
Finn’s Company, originally hailing from the northern coasts of Westfall, travelled throughout Cardriss to wherever their special services would bring the right pay. Specializing in siege and infiltration they had quite the reputation, and Finn, the mastermind of the operation, took Pestrina under his wing, teaching her everything he knew about how to break into, or out of, any fortified location she might encounter. She was taught sapping in particular, but was also learned how to safely get into just about any position she might need to and how to break anyone, or anything, a contract might require.
Being a quick study and Finn’s chosen Protege, she was treated better in Finn’s Company than she ever had been before in her life. Sure, she was expected to contribute, and she shared the danger that the rest of the company faced, but she was also accepted as a valuable member to be protected and cared for rather than simply the resource she had been treated as previously. Pest became, for the first time, a term of endearment rather than a curse to be hurled her way.
Pestrina spent more than a decade travelling widely with Finn’s Company until, finally, Finn decided that it was time to hang up his hat and retire. They made their way back to Durdunon, where the band had originally formed and he officially passed command on to his lieutenant, Sara, a well respected mercenary who would determine the company’s fate from there on. Sara offered Pestrina a position of leadership, but the sapper chose instead to strike off on her own, to test her skills and find her own adventures. What better use to put those skills to, she thought, than entering Korryn and the Tower of Ages? Surely breaking in and out could be accomplished by the right hands, and who knows what treasures might await inside?

Snow. |

Snow's submission should be finished. I've copied the background in here, crunch is all in her profile.
Life was hard as Snow grew up, the long winters compounded by the ancestral lands of her tribe – high in the mountains and far from what little arable land was available. Only spectacularly hardy folk survived in the mountains and by the time Snow had grown to fifteen years, she had lost her mother to an avalanche and her brothers to a desperate hunt from which they never returned. But, despite the harsh winters Snow was taught never to leave the tribe’s mountains – both because of the territorial bear clans who ruled the lower slopes and would viciously attack other shifters, and because of hunters, who had plagued her tribe for years. Shifter organs were valuable in certain parts of the southern lands, especially those of rare animals like tigers, reputed to be magically potent and able to cure all kinds of ailments from impotence to hair loss. Unfortunately, after a winter longer than any in living memory, the tribe was forced from their mountain home and divided into small family groups to strike out into the, comparatively, more hospitable lands below.
Snow and her father were able to evade the bear clans for a while, but some of the other families were not so fortunate and word soon spread that there were tigers to be found in the hills once more. Her father was a mighty predator, fully-grown and wily, a master of the hunt, but Snow had never managed a full shift despite her promising bloodline and tales of the white-haired girl and her companion tiger drew the hunters like moths to a flame. When eventually a group of hunters captured Snow, they proceeded to torture her, hoping to draw out her father.
They succeeded to perfection, although more than half the group paid for it with their lives and Snow watched from the pit trap they stuffed her in as her father was slowly butchered a few feet above her. He was brave, silent to the end and as his life blood dripped down on Snow she felt the beast stirring within her. When she was eventually pulled from the pit, filthy and matted with blood, she shifted for the first time and fled. Alone, terrified and angry Snow embraced the beast inside her and embarked on a long and bloody path of vengeance.
She tracked the hunters as best she could, picking them off one by one over the years on a journey that led her ever further from her wintery homeland even as she grew in resilience and power. The first died as he slept in a tavern, drinking away the coin he’d made from her father’s body and Snow claimed his mammoth tusked helm as her own. She killed another in his own home, a fine stone building built with the proceeds of cruelty, although Snow left his children unharmed – a mercy he had not offered her. But no matter how long she searched Snow was never able to catch the leaders, a brother and sister whose cunning and hunting prowess matched her own. By the time she finally tracked them, after seven long and bloody years of searching, to the City at the Axis of the World they were ready and Snow barely survived the ambush that followed. Reverting to her human form she fled and lost herself in the crowds celebrating some strange festival. Overwhelmed by noise, sound and the instinctive desire to find a quiet place of safety to lair she headed for the one building no-one seemed willing to enter - a mighty tower sheathed in azure.

Cuàn |

This sounds potentially interesting, I'll see what I can cook up.
That said, do Giants exist in your setting? I'm asking mostly because I want to grab the Giant Ancestry alternate racial feature.
Looking at making a Kono'ana melee combatant with a focus on Bull Rush and Overrun. Still figuring out the classes, but he'll be multiclass.

Brunhild Blackarrow |

Personality/outlook added to profile. Also, the call of her bloodline that drives her on? Just so happens to be playing nice with the party and following the main questline. :P Unless there is GM fiat to change that or throw a wrench in it, that is the default on which she will single mindedly follow.

trawets71 |

I would like to submit Warren Connery for this campaign. He is a fighter using a two--bladed sword.

Arbiter of the Tower |

@Trawets- I've added you to the list. Please note, though, that I asked for a description of the character's personality/outlook for an application to be considered ready (so I currently have you as a work in progress).
@Jonathan- I apologize if my warning seemed stern, that wasn't my intention. I just want to make sure that you know there may be a significant number of places where you might not get the benefits you're hoping for with a mount (plus you'd have to deal with the logistics of figuring out how to feed a large creature inside of a Tower).
@Bron- A jerkin is a piece of clothing and would be included with an appropriate outfit (such as a courtier's outfit). I suspect, though, that you mean "jerky" (as in dried meat)? Ultimate Equipment lists normal meat at 6 silver/pound (3 sp per 1/2 pound, technically)... dried meat would probably be 2-3 times that (since the meat reduces in mass as it dries, plus requires more labor), so I'd say 15 silver per pound.

Pestrina |

I've added some explicit personality/outlook to supplement what Pestrina's background already establishes (as well as putting everything from earlier onto the profile.)
Pestrina is cautious around strangers, and quick to take offense if she feels she’s not appreciated or being taken advantage of, but responds well to praise and those who welcome her skills. She expects those she respects to work for the greater good of the group they are involved in, but has no such illusions that everyone will act that way; those she doesn’t respect she expects to act with their own gain as their primary goal.
She’s not boisterous and will be somewhat shy in most social interactions, but she’s confident in her abilities to find a way to break into or through just about anything and will not hesitate to share her opinion about how best to do that. Despite a rough upbringing, she’s fundamentally a good person, not wishing particular ill on others, though also not one to respect arbitrary rules; if there’s something that will help her current company she’s probably going to try to make that happen with the ends justifying the means much of the time.

![]() |

@arbiter
I feel melee should have a way to fly and have some reach along with a few tricks by ninth level. In addition I want to have a build outside the normal and have seen the rarity of alchemists and the casters already present. Losing reach makes the pounce more important so I think velociraptor or deinonychus should work as a medium build companion. For food using a handy haversack should solve food. +2 armor can have a feature that costs extra called hosteling which stores your companion out of the way for those problematic issues. We can get this done!

trawets71 |

I've added Personality and Outlook to Warren's alias and I am reprinting it here.
Warren prefers to get along with others and while he won’t let major issues go most minor ones he will. He is quick with a smile and a friendly word especially when someone seems down. He sees the good in others and the hope in the situation he is in. Concentrating on the bad in life makes one a miserable person he believes. Warren would like to live and let live but he can’t abide evil and destructive forces. The loss of his brother weighs heavily on him and his main goal in life is to “save” his brother.

@BelacRLJ, Baron Robber, polyfrequencies, Storm Dragon, Hayato Ken, Ironperenti, and Cuàn: Any idea how long you'll need to have your applications ready for consideration? In the initial post I confusingly wrote that I'd run recruitment "for up to 2 weeks (until March 21st)" which was actually only one week from the first post. I think (since new interest has slowed down so much) I'd like to actually stick to the 21st but I can be a little flexible if that doesn't leave you enough time?
@New People: If you were thinking about hoping in with a pitch and then looked at the paragraph above this and were about to give up, please feel free to take a shot, I can be a little flexible for you too if you're excited about applying.

Eneko Stavine |

This is BelacRLJ with my updated submission.
Here is Eneko Stavine. The website ate a more comprehensive profile, so I need to add a few more magic items and show my actual skill calculations rather than just the ranks, but it's pretty much ready.

It depends a bit until when on the 21st. I'd like to have until the end of the day on the 21st so if that was the plan already I'm fine.
As for my character, still toying a bit with some parts of him.
As a 9th level character he would already be quite famous among his people (assuming 9th level are few and far between). Not quite legendary status but enough to have them tell stories about him while he's alive.
Quite a few of those stories tell of how he mad islands that were previously unsafe safe once more. Things like routing a clan that turned cannibalistic due to some demonic idol, which he also destroyed, wrestling a sea serpent into submission, solving a dispute between two sea giants, killing a fierce beast that terrorised an island and negotiating for passage with a surly brine dragon.
Not saying all, or any, of these are true, but that's what people tell.
