I agree with what you've said. I've read alot about the shortcomings of the system, and in PBP it seems to compound some of the errors.
Add on-top of it that we have a deadline to finish this scenario with the end of Outpost. I was trying to find a way to allow the posting to happen as rapidly as possible. But it hasn't been the best way forward, like the last round where the enemy acted last, drifted in the tides, then acted first. I resolved all actions, then moved the ship three times so you could all post again. It makes things a little confusing to follow for everyone, especially since the enemy crew actions are taking place in my notebook behind the fog of war.
The whole thing ends up a little hand-wavey in the interest of moving things along and having fun beating up on the enemy, which you are certainly doing.
This was the quest I was looking forward to the least, because of how much more time consuming it is on my end, while I was moving into a new house, then moving into a second temporary house to start a new career in a new city.
So in the interest of complete transparency, we have a week left of outpost, you've taken a small scratch on your ship and beaten on the Jagged Maw pretty ruthlessly. (They can't seem to roll well at all.) I chose to end the combat this way to get our final quest in! If they didn't want me to do that, they shouldn't have given the Jagged Maw a self-Destruct.
I have some homework after my first day of training to complete, and before bed (Toronto time zone) I will begin Quest 5. So you can all begin the end!

Good call on the starship combat there. It can drag on a bit sometimes. :)
Have fun with that homework!

To conitnue what i experienced in face to face sessions with Starship Combat:
Well we also just did not 'finish' some Starship Combat encounters because it was clear that we were flying circles around our enemy and poke that enemy ship up to death!
At some point in combat you can tell okay, there is no way the enemy will beat you, you are clearly having the upper hand let's say you will disable them and continue with what's next in this scenario.
Settle in well in your new home!
Remember to stretch you back from time to time doing homework.

One thing that helps with minimizing metagaming in starship combat (or at least allowing the illusion of it, but given that most GMs use it as their GM screen it's probably good enough) would be to put posts behind a spoiler. Allows players who can boost things to read through the thread and decide on a course of action without the risk of seeing the rolls.
But yeah, starship combat is not a perfect system, even over VTT where I tried running one for an (inexperienced admittedly) group.

That's why I was putting my gunnery checks in spoilers. To help prevent meta-gaming feelings. I haven't tried it, yet, but I think the next time I run PbP, I'll be doing the pilot init in a spoiler tag for both the NPC/PC ship and telling the pilot what they know in that same spoiler tag. I know not everyone is fond of letting the GM roll for the players, though.
I do want to mention, though, that I don't believe the Captain can aid on the initiative check for piloting. The encourage action specifies it only works to help with other crew actions, and the init check isn't one of those. As far as I know, the Magic Officer ability is the only one that can help with the init, though Demand may work, I'm not sure.

Oh good point, could be my mistake regarding the initiative.
I will test spoilers next time.

Many posts all at same time written right now.

Don'woory everyone i just have too much time on my hand and can check very often here.
So @Tixylix you don't keep us waiting!
This scenario is long and five quests are equal a five hour session face to face or live as a vitual session because you can assume one quest is designed to be be one hour as a general rule of thumb!

I hope my pace isn't making people feel like we are waiting for them! I'm just trying to get us in under the wire, especially if there is limited posting over the long weekend (if that's a thing where you are).
I've also just been trying to post as often as I can to keep you guys moving. My goal is/was if you do check in once or twice a day, you have the opportunity to post, and you're not waiting for me. (although that has for sure happened as well!)

Nah. I think we've been doing fine. This play medium has it's pros and cons. I've played in many groups where most of the players are either all night owls or lived on the other side of the planet. I'd wake up to a dozen new posts. :)
In the time frame so far I think we've actually done a lot. As in a face to face game sometimes you just run out of time. As long as everyone had fun, that's all that counts.

Yeah, I've had PbP con games that completely ran over time before. It's no big deal to me if we run long or finish early as a player. I'm having fun either way.

I'm okay with either as a player, but I've been hearing from our venture staff they are really pushing for reporting to get done quickly this time as they are also partially in charge of the Paizocon Online happening at the end of the month and will be swamped around that time so wrapping up Outpost is important. However reporting can happen while the game is still on, and then updated if the worst should happen, unless something (other than the current combat that is) that decides whether or not we get full credits has yet to happen.

I am confused i already did my turn this round is there a new combat round?

1d20 ⇒ 15
No boon for me too. Good luck!

![]() |

Chika Chika Boon Boon?: 1d20 ⇒ 12
I shall go boonless this Outpost! But I hope there's at least one in all of the games I'm in!

![]() |
Sorry for delay.
Boon Roll 19+: 1d20 ⇒ 15
So I don't have to preview and edit: 1d3 ⇒ 2
Though, for reference, as GM I was told on the Org Play discord that people could pick. That may not be correct, for some reason I didn't get any of the normal GM emails this con, so ignore me if those said to roll for boons. ((I'd definitely want the Season 1 Explorer boon, if I got to pick.))

![]() |
I think you only need emails if we won a boon. Let me know if you need it otherwise.

Oh, mine's easy it's just pithica42 at the normal address that gmail uses. Email or PM works fine for me, dealers choice.
