I prefer to have at least one spell slot for my level 1 spells still open when i come back. My system is that i count 0/3 spell slots used then 1/3 spell slots used and so on. On the other hand i count the charges of my pistol down from 20/20, one shot then 19/20...
Use my pistol as much as you like and the level 0 spell Telekinetic Projectile if i am out of charges for ranged combat.
She is ready to punch if melee is not too dangerous i like my characters alive and i could be the only one in the team knowing healing magic!
In combat she tries to identify and inform the team of eveything she knows at first. She uses her Divine Blessing from Sarenrae whenever fire damage does not work. She uses her Magic Missles for important tough enemies or enemies otherwise hard to bring down and only if she can do a full action for Magic Missle!

For Ship Combat she picks her roles in the following order Magic Officer then Pilot if no one else is more dexterous then her (not hard with only a +1 modfier for DEX) or plain simple higher stat total for that skill after number of ranks!
Then she would be Gunner, if there is no place for a Gunner or even a secondary or tertiary Gunner she tries her best in the role of Captain mostly only using Diplomacy most of the time to boost her allies.
