Kjeta Strongmalt |
Quick hello from Costa Rica. Currently deep in the jungle and haven't had access for days.
Got a bit now so going to catch up. Not sure if it'll last long enough to post in Gameplay.
Fingers crossed!
Raseri Whitescale |
Hee!
That made me smile. :)
Okay so, I've got to say, I'm feeling like I made a bull and we're going into a china shop. This should be fun.
Raseri Whitescale |
One of the cool things about PBP. You actually have time to think about what you're going to say. :)
That said, Raseri is doing pretty good for the party face so far. Here's hoping that some idiot doesn't press her too far.
Kjeta Strongmalt |
Back home now!
Instead of switching my cantrips, I decided to spill 50 GP for Continual Flame...but to cast it with a L4 or L3 slot, so it can cut through magical darkness.
Is it OK to say that the amulet of Ninkash that I wear has a hinged locket in it, and that I could cast CF on the inner portion so that I can open the locket to surround myself in magical torchlight?
. . .
If anyone else wants one, I'm happy to enchant one for them too (but you'll need to cover the costs).
Raseri Whitescale |
A while back Kjeta rolled to heal us up 50 points. If it's not too late, can I take 11 of those?
Raseri Whitescale |
Woo! Just not full up on spells and the like, right?
Kjeta Strongmalt |
If Deimus includes Carn in his mantle (and thus the bonus Move), would he be able to run around by the Soul Eater & attack it this round?
I'd happily give up my bonus, since I'm not as useful in there anyway.
Deimus |
Actually, since Deimus has spent less time with Carnadine in comparison with the others. Also, Deimus is still not sold on the loyalties of an individual from Morgau. So spur of the moment, and not knowing how people fight yet, he'd go for Kjeta.
Sorry about that. He'll learn ;)
GM Infinity |
Ha, yet another huge mistake I am just now realizing. Kjeta's turn should've just exploded the shadows outright...they were below the threshold. Sorry to deprive you of that moment...the second shadow wont be reappearing.
Thanks all for bearing with my mistakes, I warned you I make many exciting new ones each week. :)
Raseri Whitescale |
Hey, it's alright. I'm sure some of us (*cough*me*coughcough*) will be making some right along with ya. :)
Carnadine |
*cough*cough* I'm already contributing to my quote of mistakes...
Raseri Whitescale |
As always, Lexi, as always. :P
Kjeta Strongmalt |
...and to be explicit on my end: It's cool to know they were below my threshold, just so I can learn about the system, but the story, writing, pacing, and RP so far have been fantastic. I expect some rules hiccups as we go (and appreciate the way you help me understand my own, since I'm still learning this system).

Glad we're all light-hearted and understanding...I've seen some quit games here because of little mistakes like this.
Hrungnir, thats funny. I just KOed in another game because I meleed a bbeg as a ranged character, when I had a magic missile wand in my pocket.
Sometimes Ill just start typing and if I think of a better idea I'm like 'meh, already typed this much...' and continue with the dumb action. XD
GM Infinity |
Also, I just wanted to say I enjoyed Raseri's backstory post.
If you would like to develop your own backstory further, feel free to reach out via PM or just here on discussion. Honestly I dont put a whole lot of thought into it (other than random thoughts) unless prompted by players, or the situation screams 'tie-in' (and I am sober enough to notice). If you have an element of your story you specifically need me to create, you likely need to prod me a bit. :)

This is a game. The point is to have fun. Anyone quitting over mistakes is just being a baby about it.

Oh, this sounds fun! I'll have to look for this. ;)

Better than me. I'll start typing a post or doing an action knowing that this is going to blow up in my face. Sometimes it even works! :D

Kjeta of course will wait until you're just inebriated enough to notice. ;-)

This Soul Eater is a Kobold Press creation if I'm not mistaken (I couldnt find it in other sources anyways). This ability to take your soul that Carn and Ras just narrowly avoided is pretty nasty:
points, the soul eater can devour that creature’s soul
as a bonus action. The victim must make a DC 13
Constitution saving throw. On a successful save, the
target is dead but can be restored to life by normal
means. On a failed save, the target’s soul is consumed
by the soul eater, and the target can’t be restored to life
with clone, raise dead, or reincarnate. A resurrection, true
resurrection, or wish spell can return the target to life,
but only if the caster succeeds on a DC 15 spellcasting
ability check. If the soul eater dies within 120 feet of its
victim’s corpse and the victim has been dead no longer
than 1 minute, the victim’s soul returns to the body and
restores it to life, leaving the victim unconscious and
stable with 0 hit points.
Luckily I think this is their only scripted appearance in the entire adventure.
Raseri Whitescale |
Hoo boy. Glad that thing hit me first instead of second, otherwise I'd be rolling up a new character about now.
Kjeta Strongmalt |
Don't get too excited yet. If Deimus can't deal 3 HP to it, it might still eat you.
...Of course, maybe you could be brought back as a Gearforged? Or do they need souls? Probably...
GM Infinity |
Heh, well honestly there's a low chance that ability would trigger and then the soul eater somehow wouldn't get killed by the party. You go back to unconscious when that happens. It would have to be like a TPK, or the soul eater just decides to straight up escape for some reason...after KOing only one character.
Its probably meant to be a tense moment at a table like DM:"oh, you hit 0hp. By the way, you die instantly and your soul is eaten and you can't be resurrected" player:"wtf omg"...5 minutes later...DM:"the soul eater died, your soul returns to your unconscious body..." player:"wtf omg"
I'll never permadeath your characters unless we talk about it first and make sure its something you want.
And yes, Kjeta is right...all eyes on Deimus.
Raseri Whitescale |
That's good, cause this wouldn't be the first time Ras got done in by some unlucky hits.
That said, I don't really have a backup character in mind. I just like Ras too much to want to consider what happens if she dies.
Raseri Whitescale |
Given that both of our clerics are out of gas, I think we should probably rest up. Hopefully Ras will get a good night's sleep and we won't have an overly squishy front-liner to worry about.
*Lexi |
I agree, but I don't think we'll be able to long rest here. Our lovely GM basically said as much. We need to find a place to hole up for 8 hours or so.
Carnadine |
Let's head to Deimus's pad. Both Deimus and the GM confirmed it's safe
Raseri Whitescale |
Oh I wouldn't do it here in the library. I figured that we'd get out, then rest once we found a safe haven. Besides we need to get Raseri's gear at some point.
Hrungnir |
One thing I love about D&D5 is how martials can get magic. I’m playing a fighter...who gets full strength spells and can do tricks like scrying and summoning Weapons. It is such a breath of fresh air from pathfinder, where doing something like that takes insane multiclassing, certain feats and organization skills (ie iron caster)

I like that 5E has what feels like just the right amount of customizability. I think it helps that there aren't a ton of splatbooks running around as 3.5 and 4th edition had.
Also, I love how impactful feats are in the game, and the balancing cost to get them.

It’s a good addition to be sure.
5e runesmith dwarf
* Eldritch Knight Fighter, optional feats
Pathfinder runesmith dwarf
* Weapon Master Fighter (3) - For lvl 3 Weapon Training
* Brawler (1) - For Martial flexibility
* Skill points in Use Magic Device, Heal, and other skills as needed
* Move action to use Martial flexibility to grab the feat Advanced Weapon Training. For 1 minute can use an Item Mastery Feat. Require a magic item. Gives access, for 1 minute, to a host of spells. The exact number of spells, and their power, relies on your Fortitude. Some need a certain number of skill points. Ignore item requirements besides having a magic weapon
* Can now Heal, cast glitter dust, teleport, fly, cast burning hands, enchant your weapon, vanish, use telekinesis, etc. But only in 1 minute intervals.

Very similar character concepts. 5e makes it much more accessible.
Though, I admit. I do find it a lot of fun to pour through 100s of Feats, Traits and archetypes to do things like make a character who grapples with his beard and fights with his mustache...it just takes a lot of time.
Deimus |
And what about your eyebrows?
The simplicity of 5E drew me back. The 3.0-3.5-4.0 saga had left me unhappy. I was reluctant to give 5E even a read. Now, that’s most of what I want to play.
Raseri Whitescale |
Regarding what to do next, I want to try going after the lethal lutenist. I think it'd be a fun adventure and it'd give Raseri a chance to regain some confidence. The encounter with the wraith and the soul eater has shaken her up a good bit.
