Liking what I'm seeing so far!
I'm offline until Thursday, but feel free to come grab a beer from Kjeta during intermission and introduce yourself.
Deimus |
Ok, thanks. I've added the description to my sheet.
GM Infinity |
Hrung, sorry help me understand your sequence. I'm confused and have only had 1 beer so far tonight.
Action: Trace Rune.
Move.
Action Surge.
Action: Cast cantrip (with attack included)
Bonus: EK ability attack
Then I'm unsure where the last 2 attacks come from.
Not trying to be a dick just feeling like im missing something obvious here.
Carnadine |
Love your games. Description and pace.
A little concerned with the party split, but I trust you.
Cheers
Hrungnir |
All is good. Would just like some guidance on what actions can be taken before combat and when combat starts.
As in...activating rune to Intimidate enemies. Does that need to be done during round 1? Does Initiative need to be rolled? That kind of thing.
Deimus |
Great so far!
Kjeta Strongmalt |
Can post after dinner. Could I hit the three with a Hypnotic Pattern, without hitting an ally?
GM Infinity |
Hrung, sorry I got confused on that one yesterday. I treat speech/social checks out of turn and at first didn't realize you were linking it to your rune. You can totally activate your rune out of combat. I'll always roll initiative (basically when either side does something hostile).
Kjeta, You could get the 2 elves or the hound. The hound is over near a curtain in the southeast, but the 2 elves are more in the dead center of the room.

Thanks! Another Q: I've rolled my saves and I'm prone but still concentrating.
I believe I can
- get up from prone as a move, without triggering an opportunity attack
- cast in melee without triggering an opportunity attack (unless a foe has a special feat or ability)
- use Spiritual Weapon as a standard, attacking once
- then use my bonus to attack with it again
- and that--since those are melee attacks--they aren't at disadvantage from me being threatened
- my Concentration spell will continue, since Spiritual Weapon doesn't require concentration
...but since this is all new to me, please double check me.
Thanks!
GM Infinity |
That is all correct except for the second attack with Spiritual Weapon. Since SW has a casting time of 1 bonus action, you have already used your bonus action for the round (you only ever get 1 bonus). The casting includes a melee attack so you do get 1 attack, just not the second.
Also technically standing only takes half your movement.
Excited to see what form you make SW take.

Kjeta Strongmalt wrote:Anyone have suggestions for Kjeta's crunch?Only thing I really see that you'll want to do is invest in some strength, especially if you're going to wear heavy armor; with an 8 str, your carry cap is 120 lbs, which seems like a lot, but (for example) plate armor is 65 lbs. Add in your weapons, shield, supplies, and it adds up pretty quickly.
Also, I would drop prayer of healing for another spell, as it has a 10 minute casting time.
Belated reply: thanks for taking time to reply!
Re STR: I'm not proficient in Heavy Armor, and suspect it won't make sense to burn a feat to gain proficiency (though feel free to encourage me to reconsider--I'm making guesses here). If I stick with my 20lb breastplate (and use WIS to hit/dam with Shillelagh) does your advice change?
Re spells: thanks for the heads up, I'll have to look for other options. Maybe Lesser Restoration?
GM Infinity |
So again, not wanting to slow things down lets just let it stand, but Kjeta's action is still not within the RAW rules for bonus action spells. The rule is buried in the spell rules, instead of in the combat actions unfortunately...
Bonus Action
A spell cast with a bonus action is especially swift. You must use a bonus action on your turn to cast the spell, provided that you haven't already taken a bonus action this turn. You can't cast another spell during the same turn, except for a cantrip with a casting time of 1 action.
So if you bonus Tankard-lelagh, you can only cast another cantrip.
Again though, who cares (I didn't even catch it skimming this afternoon), but just note for next time and lets move on.
Kjeta Strongmalt |
Ahh, good to know! And I appreciate your patience as I learn 5e.
To answer your Q earlier, I'm VERY happy with this game so far--nice storytelling--and I'm looking forward to Kjeta getting to know some of the other PCs (since she was separate from the rest while in the theater).
GM Infinity |
No worries, I make mistakes often still. I am very sure I will never be perfect/flawless with rules...but I try. I was completely unaware of the bonus action spell rule for like half a year of DMing. It was only after watching some online groups play I realized I had been doing it wrong.
After this battle there will be a chance to expand your characters more, I hope.
Kjeta Strongmalt |
Based on what the elf just said about dismissing the hound...do I have a sense of whether Dispel Magic would get rid of it?
Raseri Whitescale |
Also happy with this. Just wish I was rolling better. :) Looking forward to getting to know everyone.

I doubt it would make enough of difference this round, but remember you get +1d4 to every d20 roll right now, thanks to the Blessing of Beer!
Raseri Whitescale |
Thanks, I did forget that. Sad thing is, I don't think I've hit once this fight and Raseri's supposed to be the smitey type of cleric. She has healing spells to keep herself and others in the fight, but if she has the chance, she's going to dish out damage.
Kjeta Strongmalt |
BTW, I just noticed that Ninkash is (presumably) inspired by an actual Sumerian goddess, Ninkasi

Ah the beer-axe. has there ever been a more dwarven invention? :P
GM Infinity |
So after the temple checks and/or anything else you want to do in the immediate area, we will be in sort of a sandbox mode briefly. You can investigate the temple attack further, look for other rumors/quests, or just try to get back to your normal life.
I'd like you to post about a day's worth of activity at a time, or at least what you intend to do, then I'll respond to each individually (or together if some of you stay together).
Raseri Whitescale |
Works for me. :)
@Kjeta: Not sure if it matters, but Raseri looks like she's only sixteen, which is pretty dang young for a cleric of her demonstrated power.
Raseri Whitescale |
Bee-wolf is a bear. Bee's make honey, honey is used to make mead and bears like to eat honey. I'm trying to be a little more archaic with Ras's speech, so she often speaks more formally and uses a lot of metaphors to refer to things. It's been pretty fun to write her so far.
And to be fair ot Kjeta and everyone else. Raseri is in full up battle kit. It can be kinda a hard to tell she's even a woman under all of that much less that she's a very young woman until you get a close look. :)
GM Infinity |
Sorry for any confusion but yeah, just feel free to travel back in time and retcon always. With pbp its just impossible that my free time will match up with yours. I'm just trying to throw out an array of hooks and leads so you can choose something when you do have a sec.
And if you choose not to, as the street disappearance and fey at the gates were completely ignored, thats fine too. Its an 'aw shucks' for me but of course I cant expect every hook to be bitten. And in the grand scheme most of whats happening now is not critically important, just opportunities for roleplay, test-driving character and enhancing the city.
But yeah, admittedly sandbox has always been hard for me in pbp. Hoping we can get through it in a week or two.

Oh don't fret just yet. Raseri isn't dumb enough to go after a bunch of fey on her own. She'll revisit the fey on the walls soon enough.
Deimus |
Same with that street. The problem, I think, is that with so many leads, we have to pick what we understand as the urgent ones, or perhaps the actionable ones. Zobeck is terrified at the street's disappearance, but then the story went another way for other reasons, and for now, I'm happy to follow it.
That being said, reminders of those hooks, integrated in the stroy, will help keep them in our field of view.
Deimus |
I'm debating with myself whether it is better to try and stay as small groups or to spread in as many lines of enquiry as possible. With the former, we'll have more interactions with one another, while with the latter, we'll have more interactions with NPCs.
Just thinking out loud.
Hrungnir |
Well....I’m set on my line. Going to the temple to do some research. Preferably in their archives. And trying to keep my ooc knowledge restricted to what Hrungnir knows so his research makes sense.
Wondering how the AP will bring us all back together. The more we spread out the fewer connections we have with each other.
*Lexi |
I just wonder how we're gonna get Caradine into the group. At least the rest of us know each other from the temple fight.
For now Lexi's goal is to sell the armor she's carrying, get the info from Hrungnir's contact, and then go take it to Raseri and Kjeta, as she said she would.
Lexi's kinda afraid that a full scale invasion is coming, and so she wants to be around as many competent people as possible to help her survive.
GM Infinity |
Actually now that I think about it, if you guys would like your paths could cross sooner. Kjeta and Ras are at her brewery, and (allowing some time between his various exploits) Carnadine could be just outside around the same time Hru/Dei/Lex arrive.
I mean if you feel better about gathering info as a group, that's fine with me.
Kjeta Strongmalt |
I was also thinking that (after chatting with Ras) I might suggest we go see if folks are OK over at the Temple.
That gives us a chance to meet up with Hrung and Deimus (and maybe others?) who're going there to research.
Carnadine |
I trust the GM. He said a split party would be alright.
We need to meet at the right time, so we stick together.

I can live with that. Deimus might fly on his own then, for a bit.
