After getting grabbed again, Kolgradd shouts to Boodiddly.

"Save your spells Boodiddly! It'll only grab me again. There's only one way to deal with these things..."

He will take the AoO

Bludgeoning: 2d12 + 4 ⇒ (12, 2) + 4 = 18

After quickly flashing out with the oversized hammer, Kolgradd gets back to the business of smashing the evil rubber to pulp, doing his best to ignore the whizzing of magic missiles, of evil magic and healing alike. He imagines he's at the forge, beating a sword into shape.

Welp! The exact thing I didn’t want to happen happened. That’s what I get for purposefully baiting an AoO.

Kolgradd slams his maul into the buff deep one’s torso, hitting far harder than expected as he sends the creature flying to the ground! The attack crits and kills Black, so no attack was made on Kolgradd.

The dwarf then slams his hammer several times into the amorphous deep one as several magic missiles wizz past and hit the creature!

Botting Shakur because White has 2 HP. Shakur casts telekinetic projectile

Don’t roll a nat 1: 1d20 ⇒ 15

And causes the “deep one” to discorporate into a puddle of slime. Combat over.

On the buff deep one’s person was a lesser healing potion, +1 striking handwraps of mighty blows, and a +1 chain mail. Inventory Updated

It’s late in the night for me, so I’m going to make this quick: that’s the end of Fort Hailcourse, you all level up to 6 (post what interesting stuff you get at 6th in Discussion please), and you’ll have a chance to shop before going to Iris Hill, so please look over the inventory sheet and mark off anything you’d want to keep (once you have done so please post in the Discussion so I know when everyone has; anything not marked as being taken by someone will be assumed to be sold).

| Strange Aeons | Hell's Rebels | Prey for Death | ◆◇↻

With the fall of the deep one and the apparent ooze, Fort Hailcourse has been purged of the influence of Melisenn’s cult of Hastur.

When the amnesiacs report back to Ms. Wrentz, she quickly dispatches some Sleepless Agents to keep a hold on the fort.

”Now, to cut off the head of the serpent; Iris Hill awaits. Rest and make any preparations that you may need.”

The amnesiacs spend the rest of the day recuperating from the events of Fort Hailcourse. The day after is largely spent in Thrushmoor’s markets, selling any items that they have on hand and purchasing items in preparation for the assault on Iris Hill.

I will continue the narrative once I have confirmation that everyone has leveled up and has looked over the inventory sheet.

| Strange Aeons | Hell's Rebels | Prey for Death | ◆◇↻

Okay, so technically this is a single day of downtime, but I’m going to heavily railroad what you guys do with that downtime for the sake of simplicity. Kolgradd is doing the buying/selling, Jevar is attempting to transfer the armor rune to Kolgradd’s half-plate, and Shakur and Boodiddly model for Lelwyn.

Jevar Crafting; DC 20: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (11) + 13 = 24

The rune is now on Kolgradd’s armor, but it’ll cost 10% of the rune’s Price (in this case 16 gp; I misremembered the Price when I said 13.5 before) to properly transfer it; you had to have the chain mail to do this, so that wasn’t sold. Shakur prepares restoration four times and casts it once per person to heal sanity damage.

Boodiddly Sanity Healing: 1d4 ⇒ 3
Jevar Sanity Healing: 1d4 ⇒ 4
Kolgradd Sanity Healing: 1d4 ⇒ 3
Shakur Sanity Healing: 1d4 ⇒ 1

Thrushmoor is only a 5th level settlement, so you could not sell either the scroll of blink or the clandestine cloak, as they are higher level than the settlement’s (you could possibly have found a prospective buyer willing to pay more than your generic merchant, but it would have taken more downtime than that single day).

Taking into account the money gained from modeling for Lelwyn and the cost of transferring the armor rune (which I’m deducting from Kolgradd’s money since he’s the one that wanted the rune), at the end of that day of downtime: Boodiddly and Shakur each gain 102.17 gp, Jevar gains 101.17 gp, and Kolgradd (effectively) gains 85.17 gp.

Please post what you would have gotten purchased for you during that day in the Discussion please, just keep in mind that Thrushmoor is a level 5 settlement, so any items you purchase cannot exceed 5th level.

Chapter 3: Against the Cult of Hastur

*

Starday, 8 Lamashan, 4716

*

Iris Hill stands at the top of a natural hill on the northwestern corner of Thrushmoor. The entire estate is surrounded by an imposing 10-foot tall hedge. Breaking the thick hedge that surrounds the estate, a squat building sports a pair of heavy wooden doors bearing a small sliding hatch. Map Updated

If you knock on the front door or try to open it:
If you tried to open the door: it’s locked.

The sound of rustling comes from the other side of the door, and the hatch slides to the side to reveal a pair of gray eyes peering from the other side.

”Count’s not home; go away.”

The hatch slides closed.

What do you do?

When Kolgradd returned from shopping and equipping himself for fighting more otherworldy horrors, he looked on at Jevar's work with amazement.

"This is amazing work! I've felt an affinity for crafting, smithing especially feels like something I've done before, but this is the work of a true expert"

Afterwards he affixed his new talisman to the half-plate, but made sure that the rune was proudly displayed.

On the way up to Iris Hill he wondered aloud what the best approach would be when they got there.

"How should we play this? Announce our presence and give Melisenn a chance to explain herself?"

He strokes his beard as he ponders

"It feels like we'd just be giving her a chance to prepare. She's probably already expecting us, no sense letting her drop us in a vat of acid. I say we smash the door in and put a stop to whatever dark magic she's got cooking in there, and maybe learn what's happened to us too"

Earlier...

Jevar hunches over his work table fiddling with the talisman as Kolgradd looks on and appreciates. Well, I enjoy those other forms of crafting as well. I find building and configuring things generally satisfactory. Breaking them down and figuring them out can be nice too... but we won't do that with any of your stuff right now. There! With the last word the last bit shifts into place and seems to take a permanent place as if the armor had been built with it.

Behind them is a well-dressed human man with a rapier in one hand and twirling around a coin in the other.

Jevar sends forth a mass of fire that very much fails to hit. Also, your spell attack bonus should be +12 now.

Kolgradd swings hard at Blue, hitting the brute twice in the gut! Though the tribal creature is still standing! Attack 2 wasn’t a crit, BTW.

Yellow desperately tries to shake off Shakur’s curse, but is unable to.

Red moves over into the tight corner of the building to flank against Kolgradd. Gonna call that a tight (but not exceptionally so) space, so it was difficult terrain for Red to enter it, so he actually triggered from Kolgradd as well.

Red then bites at the dwarf!

Red vs Kolgradd FF: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (14) + 12 = 26

Blue vs Boodiddly: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (13) + 12 = 25

Making an assumption: [[R]] Shield Block Boodiddly desperately tries to hold the brute at bay with his magical shield, and he jerks it away, but this does not stop the creature from tearing off some of the gnome’s skin!

Blue sees how little flesh he tore off from the gnome and spits it out, leaping at Boodiddly once again to get a bigger bite!

Blue vs Boodiddly; 2nd: 1d20 + 12 - 5 ⇒ (20) + 12 - 5 = 27
Damage (doubled from crit): 1d12 + 10 ⇒ (5) + 10 = 15

I swear, I legitimately chose to do another bite instead of Cannibalistic Consumption because of how little damage Blue dealt on that first attack! (Cannibalistic Consumption’s healing is dependent on the damage that they dealt) I didn’t actually know that that would be a crit! Blue bites into Boodiddly’s thigh and tears off a massive chunk of flesh and absolutely devours it in several bites! [[A]] Cannibalistic Consumption; Blue heals 14 HP. EDIT: The attack missed due to a failed flat check (see end of post)

So there are a total of three two reactions that Kolgradd can take: an AoO against Yellow, an AoO against Red, and a Shield Block against Red’s Strike. The initiative card below is assuming that Kolgradd didn’t take any AoOs (an incorrect assumption); I’ll retcon stuff as needed.

Bardic Lore: This is a living topiary. They are sometimes used by magically-inclined nobility as guardians without taking away from the aesthetic of their property. Topiaries are usually made to be easily pruned and sheared, and these are no exception. Translation: weak to slashing

Oww... OWW... OUCH! Mangey animals! I'm.... okay. Let's just take care of this last one.

As he says this though, he administers one of his elixirs of life to himself. It's only a slight improvement and then he moves closer to the group.

Boodiddly continues singing, Kolgradd desperately tries to close into melee, Shakur sends another dagger through the foliage, and Jevar drinks an elixir.

The unicorn disengages from Kolgradd’s advance but does move past him in the process, so triggers an AoO from Kolgradd, then paws the ground as it charges at Jevar!

Unicorn horn vs Jevar: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (6) + 12 = 18
Damage; Powerful Charge: 1d10 + 4 + 2d6 ⇒ (10) + 4 + (2, 4) = 20

But the wizard narrowly dodges away from the unicorn’s charge!

Grrr, come on! The wizard is just getting irritated now, as it seems that the topiaries "like" him.

He steps away before incanting a bolt of fire at it.

Would you just burn and die already!

"I think it might actually be safer to be next to the unicorn," Boodiddly suggests, gasping for breath before getting into the third verse.

After half an hour of patching up wounds, the amnesiacs set on their way. Doing the simple one first:

To the small building

This one-story wooden building is outfitted with an outhouse and an external awning to shelter firewood. Map Updated There is nothing else here.

I’ve circled each of the buildings in a different color; which one would you guys like to go to first? (Two votes moves the party)
