Feel free to ask game-related out of character questions or make suggestions here. The game will get better and the world setting richer, the more you add to it.

Question to the group. I'm thinking that it might be better if I'm also fleeing from Ionia rather than Valeria. That way I get to join a group heading to New Valeria, which seems like the more interesting place to go. Anyone disagree?

As you wish...

That would mean she might already know Danalf, who did the same. Perhaps they fled together, and stay close in the new world? Perhaps in Iona they studied magic together and shared the goal of coming to terra nova to practice magic more freely.

I think the story is a little different, because Elise was born in the new world. If Danalf is a particularly helpful sort, then perhaps you are involved some sort of underground network to get folks out of Ionian lands, old and new. You might be my next point of contact even though I don't realize it yet.

Makes sense. Also I posted that before seeing your introductory post in gameplay :)

Haha, it would've been funny though if we knew each other already and I just didn't notice you sitting at the bar. Let me work on version 2.0 of my background.

Ideally, some way for the group to gel is great if you come up with it, but it doesn't have to be unnatural.

The way I see this going is different than most threads/games I've played. I will throw some plothooks out, and you can jump on them if yo want, working out your own group as you see fit, or you can wait until the next plot hook and next group.

The more interaction, the more your PCs will know about each other as stories arise.

Still waiting for people to gather for a short bit before the hooks come out in earnest.

Okay, I think I will leave well enough alone with my character. She is who she is, and we will see where that takes us!

FYI: I'm going to be out of town without access to a computer starting next Saturday (9/14) morning (US/Pacific time). I return the next day (9/15) in the early evening.

Given that I can post Friday evening before I leave and Sunday evening when I get back, I hope this will keep disruption to a minimum or non-existent.

Thanks!

Thank you for the courtesy of a heads up on absence. I hope that others will extend the same when they have RL needs. Generally, I will let you know if I will be away for more than 1-2 days. My intention is to post daily, but that's not always possible, so it may be every other.

While we're on the subject, I should probably tell you that I'm a University Student, and sometimes homework, courses and campus activities tend to be... A lot. I'll certainly try to post daily, but it may not always be possible.

Even if things do get intense, however, I'll probably won't be off the computer for longer than a couple days.

PLEASE NOTE:

As we start off this game, using a new rules set, I would like to establish a few conventions from time to time. The first is that, in order to maintain some level of verisimilitude, I will be rolling many of the the skill checks, saves, and other rolls that you may have been familiar with rolling for yourself in other settings. Things like Perception, Lore, Recall Knowledge, Stealth, Intimidate, Diplomacy, and the like, where a failure may not be immediately noticeable or where a noticeable failure may change your approach, I plan to roll behind the screen. You should still be able to roll attacks, damage, most saves, and some other skills like Performance or Crafting where the results will be obvious to the character as well as the player.

A few details about this convention:

1) I will roll the dice behind the screen in spoiler text and generally the DC and result will be there. I can't prohibit you looking at the spoilers, and I roll it there to keep things on the up and up, but it harms the natural insecurity of the game if you peek, Try to refrain from doing so.

2) If you roll an "in the open" check on something that I will now typically roll, I will warn you the first time, accepting your result, but then will disregard your roll in favor of mine in future instances.

3) I can't always know everyone's modifier for every stat, every time. You'd be wise to put your bonuses and key situational modifiers in your characters tagline so can more easily try to get it right. You are within your rights to ask OOC if I added this or that, and I will amend the results if I forgot something meaningful.

4) I will explain via exposition the results of your roll including critical failures and successes, so you should be fairly well armed with what the result is as we progress.

5) I reserve the right to change up this policy as situations call for it, or in the future, as I have never really run a game this way before.

Again, the idea isn't to take your dice away, but to make results of skills checks less obvious when failure has very real, but perhaps not immediately known, consequences. I plan to play my tabletop games the same way in the future.

I hope that makes sense for you. Please ping me with questions you have. I think you will see what I mean as we advance gameplay.

Numismatics (coins) in Terra Nova

Both the Ionian and Valerian settlements on Terra Nova use the same base 10 coin system as outlined in the CRB. They have different shapes and names in different cultures however:

Valeria: copper piece is a penny, pence, or in the colloquial pinch. Not pinches, but pinch (plural or singular). As in that loaf of bread sells for 3 pinch.

Silver are stags, the royal animal, and have a large buck imposed on them.

Gold pieces are called crowns, again with the crown of Valeria pictured.

Platinum is very rare in Alderran or Valeria, and is typically not made into coinage. In Terra Nova, coins from the old world are more scarce and inherently more valuable. They are called royal crowns (or royals).

Ionia: some players may hold or find coins of Ionian make. These are also following the base 10 system, and are accepted in Tanner's Crossing and the March region, but are generally frowned on in Redmont or other Valerian settlements. Using Valerian coins in Ionia is sure to raise suspicion...

Copper: these coins are called mercies and are triangular in shape. They are the most common coin given for alms, and that is how the name was derived.

Silver: These are round coins, but smaller in diameter than normal, and are called buttons commonly.

Gold: These are called crescents the holy symbol of Morgath, and are shaped liked their name. Gold crescents can be cut into tenths (or larger denominations, and spent like mercies or buttons.

Platinum: These are bigger square metal coins of hammered gold, almost like thin sheets. They are called blessings.

The Novans don't make coins, but trade in valuable objects or barter. They have taken to getting Valerian or Ionian coins, since they must trade in the villages and towns, but before the landing they did not trade in currency.

Elves likewise do not have their own coins, but have taken on the practice of the newcomers. They do collect and covet gold and silver (and other precious metals) but have usually stored them in their natural state, or in heavy bar-like ingots. They tend to trade wealth on paper rather than in bulk, with an advanced system of credit and banking that is pretty much unknown to any outside the race.

Sea Wolves will take whatever is valuable, not being choosy about coins origins, shapes, or sizes. They prefer art objects and other items of value to pure coinage.

Again, the idea isn't to take your dice away, but...

As we are all getting familiar with the new ruleset, you will see that some skills have the Secret trait. Of course those are meant to be rolled behind the screen by the GM. Might have been easier to say above that I will be expanding those skills with secret traits, to include some not labeled as such in CRB2.

For the map, I put up a quick sketch. Feel free to fill in and ask questions. We can start a dialogue. The sketch is freely editable, so use civility and appropriate care.

In my character's backstory, I set his home village relatively close to this region. For scale, roughly how long would it take to travel from Redmont to Tanner's Crossing?

I would say about 2 days by road. More before the road is complete.

Alright. My village is at least 8 days or so travel away, probably closer to 10 or 12. I did set it next to a river, so it might be along the one next to Tanner's Crossing or a tributary of it. Have you been able to look over my character yet?

I'd be willing to look into working on calendar names for this world. Would the two old world nations share a basic calendar setup and/or names? Also, would there be roughly the same number of days / months in the year?

Also, would the new world races have different calendars than the old world. I'm picturing at least the Novans and the Elves could have a more lunar based calendar than a solar based one, or something along those lines.

Blake Fleming wrote:

Tanner's Crossing, the village is just on the north side of the river, at the site of an old ford. With the building of the south road, Baron Harrald wants a bridge across the river to aid in southward expansion, nevermind that the lands there are also claimed by Ionia.

Therefore the site of the bridge, which is still under construction by a company of dwarves, is right adjacent to the south end of the village.

The Alderran calendar is the same regardless of nationality, at least so far. The elven and Novan calendars might be quite different but for our naming conventions, we will use Valerian dates etc.

I imagine a 12 month, 30 day calendar with an extra week in mid-summer and mid-winter for celebrations. Those weeks don't belong to any given month. Perhaps using The Eight for either days or some months?

Happy to review ideas.

Male N Human (Novan) Herbalist Druid 1 | HP: 17 | AC: 16 | Fort: +4; Reflex: +5; Will +9 | Perc: +7; Stealth +5 | Speed: 25 | 1st Spell Slots: 1/2 | FP: 2 | HeP: 1 | Acro: +5; Craft: +4; Diplo: +3; Lore (Herb): +4; Nat: +7; Surv: +7 | Str: +1; Dex: +2; Con: +1; Int: +1; Wis: +4; Cha +0 | Current Effects: None

Since the Nameless One is a bit of different case, using The Eight for days of the week is a fairly good idea from what I can think of. That is assuming that the weeks are seven days of course. If they are a different number per week, then it would probably be better to use them for some of the months. Which would you prefer?

Male Elf | HP: 17/17 | AC: 19 | F: +6, R: +9, W: +5 | Perc: +7; Stealth +7 Fighter 1 | Speed 35ft | Hero Points: 1/1 | Reactions: AoO/Shield Block | Conditions: None

Or we could have the days of the week be named for elder gods that are no longer worshiped (Saturn'S Day, Thor's Day, etc.), and the months could be named for the 8, and alternate aspects of the more important members of the 8.

Evil gods would get winter months and the common spring flood periods, I think. Good gods would get the pleasant weather and harvest months.

Male N Human (Novan) Herbalist Druid 1 | HP: 17 | AC: 16 | Fort: +4; Reflex: +5; Will +9 | Perc: +7; Stealth +5 | Speed: 25 | 1st Spell Slots: 1/2 | FP: 2 | HeP: 1 | Acro: +5; Craft: +4; Diplo: +3; Lore (Herb): +4; Nat: +7; Surv: +7 | Str: +1; Dex: +2; Con: +1; Int: +1; Wis: +4; Cha +0 | Current Effects: None

Here is a link to the current workup of a calendar with names that I have. On this, the months are for the most part named after The Eight, with some named otherwise for things I thought sounded good. They currently have some linguistic drift, but they could be changed to more literal namings.

(Currently, the sheet is set to view only. I can change that in the future if people want.)

GM, may I try working up at least a Novan calendar? If so, is the moon of this planet similar to our own (size, rotational speed, etc...)? Or does it synch up more with the standard months? (Also, is there only one moon?)

Sigh, all the things i have not thought of...

Please, if you'd like to work on a Novan calendar that's great. I too think it should be based on the cycles of the moons.

In my imagination, there are 3 moons, a silvery moon that is worshiped for Good, a red moon that only appears in the sky on certain days that are unpredictable (TBD) and a black/dark moon that is always present, but rarely seen. The red moon is a harbinger of things, usually bad things, it is considered Evil by some. The black moon is the balance, and druids and others concerned with neutrality invoke this moon's power from time to time. That may be too hard to deal with easily.

For our purposes, let's assume a seven day week, and a 24 hour day, since those conventions are harder to re-train our mind around.

Like the calendar so far. Thanks! You could have a month around Harvest and another around Planting to fill in gaps (or similar).

Male N Human (Novan) Herbalist Druid 1 | HP: 17 | AC: 16 | Fort: +4; Reflex: +5; Will +9 | Perc: +7; Stealth +5 | Speed: 25 | 1st Spell Slots: 1/2 | FP: 2 | HeP: 1 | Acro: +5; Craft: +4; Diplo: +3; Lore (Herb): +4; Nat: +7; Surv: +7 | Str: +1; Dex: +2; Con: +1; Int: +1; Wis: +4; Cha +0 | Current Effects: None

From your description, I am picturing the red moon as being a significantly smaller body, but with an extremely odd orbit, being pulled around by both the planet and the other two moons. It would therefore be sometimes really close and other times far away, looking like a simple star or comet.

As another question, which of the moons have the possibility of obscuring the others partially/fully? If the above about the red moon is something you wish to go with, then these are the options as I see them:

* Dark can obscure Silver
* Silver can obscure Dark

If not, then these are the options as I see them:

* Dark can obscure Silver and Red, Silver can obscure Red
* Dark can obscure Silver and Red, Red can obscure Silver
* Silver can obscure Dark and Red, Dark can obscure Red
* Silver can obscure Dark and Red, Red can obscure Dark
* Red can obscure Silver and Dark, Silver can obscure Dark
* Red can obscure Silver and Dark, Dark can obscure Silver

I am down with all that.

There are times, obscured or not, when only one moon shows (or in the case of the Black Moon, none are visible). There are also times when all three are active and any number of combinations in between. I suppose druids and elves, and Novans to some extent, all take different meanings from those combinations for good or for ill.

Mainly a sign that I am behind in my posting and trying to catch up. Glad there is such engagement early on. We can support more players, if you people looking.

I love PFS but I have been looking for something a bit more. There is only so deep you can go with random groups and I want to get better at RP and have more of a chance to have a character develop relationships with others. Enjoying very much.

Once we're in a sub-thread, can we still keep an eye on the hub? Or do we stay off the thread until we return to the White Wolf IC?

Well, a character can't be in two places at once, so I presume it's like moving between zones on a game server :)

As a player though, I don't recall there being a limit on characters.

Blake Fleming wrote:

You can still keep an eye on the hub, but your character can't really post or interact there IC, until your group finishes their thread, if ever...

You an post on the Hub sites Discussion or Recruitment page, and like Danalf says, nothing prevents you from running multiple characters (so far). I'd allow that provided you could keep them from joining the same thread, and/or using them inappropriately to support one or the other.

Also, if you are looking for others to fill out your group and there just aren't enough players LMK. There will be NPC henchmen or allies available for hire or recruitment as well.

I am sort of hopeful to continue to draw new player interest, but we may have to keep bumping the recruitment thread to keep it top of lists.

I still have a couple of ideas I'd like to try, but yeah, i'll save it for the next quest group that forms.

I apologize for slow posting this week so far. I had to go out of town for work unexpectedly today and so will not get much posting done. That's after the movie (ad astra) last night which kept me out late.

I plan to have time to get caught up tomorrow evening. Sorry!
