Welcome to Varisia, and to Sandpoint - a small coastal town located to the west of the region. For the last forty-two years, there hasn't been much trouble in this small coastal town, but that is all about to change.

"Ameiko!" Masdok stands up and puts his arms out to try to stop her; he puts a hand on each of her shoulders. "He'll be there tomorrow. You need to rest." he says, looking earnestly into her eyes.

In the back of his mind, he wonders what's gotten into himself.

As Masdok's hands steady and hold her upright, she puts a hand to her head. "Ow... Ok. Tomorrow will be soon enough. I suppose I do need rest, even with the healing. I will lay back down, I think." She sways dizzily and has to rely on his help to get back to her bed. Still, her decision to force some answers from her half-brother seems to have given her some solace and she does indeed rest, as she promised.

Grulyn's inquiries of the children bring peals of laughter. "That old smith is a mean one! Did he tell you off, Master Dwarf?" But they don't even wait for a response, scampering off as they sing their song again.

The town falls into a somber silence as the sun slips below the horizon, the news of Lonjiku's death at Tsuto's hands having shaken the town to it's very foundation. The night passes uneventfully, though with many goods and gold changing hands. The Heroes make out well, as the shops are still offering them a 20% discount on new gear. Forgot to mention this before, so take 20% back on your purchases!

In the morning, Shalelu Andosana is waiting in the common room of the Rusty Dragon. She has a few others with her.
Tag Cade, Talia and Arcallius. Sorry it took so long to work you in!

"Father Zantus said you need guidance to Thistletop. I can take you there, it is only a few hours journey from the town. I found these two looking for the rest of their party near there. This other I warned of the goblin activity in the area and he offered his aid."

Stock Description piece:
The young human might be of Chelaxian descent, his coal-black hair and irises certainly suggest it, but his skin is darker than you expect for Chelaxians. Then again, he is obviously an outdoorsman so that could be as deep a tan as Chelaxian skin will hold, too. There is no sign of armor on his person, though he has a large flat quiver on his back, with his backpack strapped across that. A large, painted holy symbol of Erastil is on his chest. By now the longbow is completely expected, though you might have expected a simple dagger before the longsword he wears. All of his clothing and pack, even his broad-brimmed hat, are in a variety of earth-tone browns and forest greens. The equipment doesn't look new, but it does look well cared for.

He seems far too relaxed to be properly Chelaxian, not seeming to worry about having a position above those around him. Seeking instead to be a part of the current community, to help everyone feel like they belong together.

The third seems at ease, waving to the group with what seems an honest smile on his face. "Hello! I'm Arcallius Vestalis, but you can call me Arc, instead, if you like. Yes, I volunteered to help this community with their goblin problem. Seems something I can do to help make their lives a little brighter and easier." His eyes pop wider and his mouth agape, before he transitions. "But you probably want to know something about how I can help with that, don't you? Deadeye's gifted me a small talent with a bow, and some knowledge of the natural world around us. That and a positive attitude can solve more problems than you might think. Bow's not always required, of course."

No issue from me about the delay as you describe it. Team had to close out what they were dealing with.

A halfling is sitting at a table with a woman of mixed elvish blood. His head turns to regard the group when Shalelu introduces them. Cade takes a big gulp from his mug and sets it down on the table and stands up.
Nodding slightly he takes another drink and walks towards the group, his black traveling coat does little to hide the elegant rapier hanging by his hip. The early morning light catches on the chain links that lye under his white shirt.

Good morning. I am Cade Goodbarrel and this is Talia. The rest of our group got separated when we went looking for Thistletop. It is our hope that they just got lost and are safe but that knowledge will have to wait till a later time. The need to investigate the Goblins is too great to put off any longer. If you are willing...
Cade motions towards Talia...
we would like to tag along...if you do not mind?

"Holy Desna," she thinks to herself, "I know I left home in search of new ... new... well, everything really, but this is a bit sudden."

She drains her mug of tea and continues her not very serious recounting, "So that left me and Cade to do it all and he's not big enough to hide behind. He hits things and has a wonderful dog. I pick locks and find traps. Going to learn some magic soon though."

Ameiko enters the room and waves a lukewarm greeting. She looks better than she did last night, though she is far from looking her best. Her face is still swollen from weeping and injury. Her bruises have begun to heal, yellowing around the edges. But her eyes hold a steely determination. She wears red leather armor as well as a gleaming rapier on her hip.

"Sheriff Hemlock has still not returned. He will probably want to send Tsuto to Magnimar for trial when he returns, but I mean to have my answers from him before that. Masdok, you said you wanted to come with me. I'm ready to go now. The rest of you are welcome too." She doesn't wait for acceptance but walks steadily to the door and exits with purpose.

She makes her way to the jail and opens the door with a show of force that causes it to rebound against the jamb with a loud crash. The guard falls off his chair as he tips backward, startled by the sudden noise. "Hey what's the big i--- Oh, Lady Kaijitsu. I wasn't asleep, I swear."

She ignores his protestations, "I would visit my brother, consider yourself relieved." He doesn't argue and makes a hasty retreat as Ameiko faces off with Tsuto through the bars of his cell.

"Well, good morning, sis. You look like you could use some more beauty rest."

Ameiko sneers at his casual greeting. "Don't think this iron will protect you. I can have you out of there and strung up from the nearest tree in minutes. All I have to do is say the word."

"You can tell me why you've done this! I know you despised our father but I never thought you could murder him! But the good people of this town never harmed you. Why should you want to harm them?" She asked, the confusion clear on her face.

Tsuto clams up at this question and crosses his arms with a stubborn set to his jaw. "Oh no, you will answer me, damn you!" Ameiko cries and begins to cast a spell. Tsuto looks alarmed at first and then settles into a dazed calm, blinking placidly at you all.

That's how I was able to blackmail him to arrange for the North Gate to be left open and the ladder so I could sneak into the graveyard the night of the festival. Oh and your father killed our mother, of course. But I've told you that before."

A look of anguish crosses Ameiko's face. "No, that was a lie! Or it's what you believe, but it isn't the truth."

Tsuto smiles and nods. "I did believe it, yes. But I could never prove it, of course. But the Szcarni alliance, I could. So dear old Dad had to do as I asked. But he admitted to me that he killed her. He wanted me to know before he died. 'I killed your whore of a mother. Just a quick shove off the back porch. She gave the sweetest scream while she fell. I wish you could have heard it, you half-breed bastard.' Those were his last words."

Ameiko covers her mouth in shock and sags against Masdok, catching hold of his arm to keep from falling. "I need to sit down." She says in a daze. After a few moments she composes herself and looks to your group. "The spell will affect him for some time. Do you have any questions you want to ask?"

After you make your preparations, Shalelu leads your group east along the Lost Coast Road. The salty smell on the wind follows your path. After about 6 miles, she veers off the road toward the prickliest patch of forest you've ever seen at the Thistleriver crossing. The briars and thistles that grow so rampantly in Nettlewood are even more dense and tangled here, close to the shore. Although not quite dense enough to block the sound of waves crashing on the unseen shores to the west, the undergrowth is certainly thick enough to block sight and access to the coast. Few trees grow this close to the edge of the sea, but the briars themselves often reach heights to rival them; here, the patch is nearly twenty feet high.

Tsuto snarls and answers the halfling's last question first, "Nualia isn't a stinking goblin, fool! She's an angel. My dark angel... only she could understand the shame and humiliation these backwater Sandpointers can inflict. Abandoned, neglected, ostracized and finally imprisoned in her own home, she finally stood up for herself and burned that filthy church down around that sanctimonious prick, Tobyn. I brought her his bones, so she could offer them to her true Mother, Lamashtu. She wants to be cleansed of her 'celestial taint' and become Lamashtu's true daughter in flesh as well as in spirit. Her arm has already been transformed. She venerates the Demon Mother and wields her profane power. That's what these people have driven her to!"

Ameiko calls for him to answer about secret paths and he merely smirks before he answers. "Well sis, they could always climb up the cliffs from the beach below, but they'd better hold on tight. It's a long way down."

He resists again as she asks for a map or a description of the layout, but quickly blurts that the rope bridge is rigged to fall if more than two medium creatures try to cross it at the same time. On guard he names goblins, humans and even a bugbear among Nualia's minions.

Nothing else seems to forthcoming until Ameiko stands again and calls him down as he tries to dodge due to the vagueness of the last inquiry. "No, you know more! Tell them what you said to me in the Glassworks. The voice she hears! You wanted me to come with you and help you convince her to leave that place with you, I can tell that you're afraid. Tell them what you fear!"

His eyes look haunted as she uses her magic and the force of her will to compel the truth from him. "Malfeshnekor... she calls it. It speaks to her through her thoughts. I thought maybe... she was going mad, but others can sense it too. It's calling to her, from down in the depths somewhere. Calling for her to set it free, whatever it is." He swallows with an audible click, his mouth dry with fear.

______________________________________________________________________

Shalelu looks amused as she suggests. "Send the halfling in first, then the dwarf, and the rest of you can squeeze in behind by size and you should manage. Keep to the northeast and you should find your way to the rope bridge. This is where we part ways, good luck."

Grulyn squeezes into the path through the briars and notices drag marks on the ground, as if something large has been pulled along the trail. Blood marks the thorns occasionally as whatever it was had been forced through tight spaces. The direction seems to run to the northeast, just as Shalelu had mentioned.

We can skip most of the minor goblins you encounter if you fully explore the thistle maze and move on toward the rope bridge. Give me a marching order for proceeding through. You will need to move at half speed to be sure you aren't damaged by the surrounding thorns.

A four-foot-high tunnel winds through the dense briars and nettles. The floor is hard-packed earth, with patches of wiry plants growing stubbornly here and there. Talia moves into point position, moving gradually and hunched over so as to not risk being caught by the cruel briars of the Nettlewood.

Three thistle tunnels open into a large cavelike chamber. Above, the thorny canopy grows thin enough that tiny slivers of the sky above can be seen, while below, the ground consists of trampled dirt. To the west, the distant sound of sloshing waves echoes up from a hole.

The group continues northeast, as per Shalelu's advice and just so happen to be following the signs that something large was drug through this way. As Talia turns a corner, Bellam gives voice to a bark of alarm followed by a low whine. The group looks around to see what has disturbed the canine when suddenly a sleek, dark feline leaps from the surrounding brush and charges Talia. It sinks sharp teeth into her leg and shakes vigorously, tearing the wound deeper and pulling the half-elf off her feet!

There is movement in the brush ahead of Simflay and Masdok. They hear the tell-tale sounds of an incantation being cast. A soft sound of leaves rustling all around draws your eye to see that the briars and thorns surrounding you are growing rapidly to ensnare your limbs!

Entangled:

The character is ensnared. Being entangled impedes movement, but does not entirely prevent it unless the bonds are anchored to an immobile object or tethered by an opposing force. An entangled creature moves at half speed, cannot run or charge, and takes a –2 penalty on all attack rolls and a –4 penalty to Dexterity. An entangled character who attempts to cast a spell must make a concentration check (DC 15 + spell level) or lose the spell.

Creatures that make their save can move as normal, but those that remain in the area must save again at the end of your turn. Creatures that move into the area must save immediately. Those that fail must end their movement and gain the entangled condition. Entangled creatures can attempt to break free as a move action, making a Strength or Escape Artist check. The DC for this check is equal to the DC of the spell. The entire area of effect is considered difficult terrain while the effect lasts.

Simflay is following along in the group, crouched over slightly to avoid the briars. She has just half-finished thinking to herself "Well, this is very strange, creeping through these nettles. Still, at least we're not stumbling through some awful cave. The fresh air here is ..." when suddenly the dark form of a cat leaps out and attacks Talia.

Hearing the sound of what she takes to be spell-casting, Simflay tries to puzzle out what it may be Spellcraft: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (18) + 5 = 23 though her ruminations are rendered moot when the vines begin reaching out and ensnaring her companions.

Swaying back a little to avoid the grasp of the vines, she calls out in a slightly breathy tone Iritosha dua Venshio Ashuda-nos

Her hair swirls back off her shoulders, and a moment later a light gust of wind bursts out from her, blowing softly across all her companions. Everyone feels an uplift of spirits, as if the wind carries with it a memory of past valor.

Sorry Grulyn, your action won’t work as you’re entangled and the territory is all difficult terrain. You can't move far enough to attack. You can sub that roll in to break loose and then be able to move 10 feet.
Simflay, you cannot move out of the range of effect this turn, but moved back as far as she could go.

Talia lashes out again with her dagger, but still cannot touch the red-striped beast.

The ensnaring brambles grow and twine again, Grulyn and Bellam are caught and only Simflay and Cade move freely.

Fortunately for Talia, the feline has grown wary of the halfling's slender blade and withdraws. No AoO for Cade or Talia, but Bellam gets one as it retreats through a second threatened square.

The goblin takes a step deeper into the thorny brush, and the sounds of casting are heard again. A strange growling sound comes from the goblin and Bellam gives a low whine before turning with a snarl to bite at his master.
