Completely away from this game -- but I am running Rise of Runelords on Roll20. I was wondering if others in this group can give me good examples of con artist or theives guild scenarios to run?
To frame the above question better: I have one of the PC's that I'm trying to draw deeper and deeper into the Scarzni in Sandpoint. The PC is more of a thug brute, but I still want him to get a taste of how the Scarzni operate in such a small town. I'm thinking of bringing him in to help with a couple scams, or bait and switches, or even illegal contraband.
I'm open to any ideas for those that have run these types of thieves guild operations for someone that isn't really a thief.
Thank you all in advance!
Tessenarin |
If he's a thug, seems like he'd be more likely to stand guard or participate in a protection racket. though off the top of my head (I haven't don ROTL in a long time), I don't remember there being protection rackets in Sandpoint. But you could create them.
Atium of Varg |
Thank you Tess.
Yes, he's a thug. I was either going to have him participate in some stuff, or for stuff that was not his "style" I was going to have him overhear about some "operations".
He's also a Hero of Sandpoint, so I have to be careful how I incorporate him, I.E. they will use his good reputation for their advantage.
But again, I'm not all too good with coming up with devious mafia plots.
GM Tyranius |
I tried doing a search as I can't seem to recall much with the Scarzni. I wasn't able to come up with much yet, though still looking.

Yeah, I don't know many scenarios with them. Sorry. I'm like a seaman who needs to find a good temple to do some canoeing.
Aishe Danior |
Yeah, as far as resources go - Aishe is good to go. Not at max, but he's got most of his tricks ready. But he's basically martial, so he doesn't have that many tricks in the first place. :)
Mostly he's worried about tracking them through the sewers, but that might not be a thing. He has no idea until we get down there.
It's certainly reasonable to go report now so the higher ups can start their process, rest up, and hit the sewers first thing tomorrow. Worst case, we end up spending more time down there hunting down a lead I think.

I'm good with anything. My only concern from a roleplaying perspective is this doomsday clock . Are any of the other players perceiving it also?
Not really. I mean, according to 2e, we've already failed. ;) There is nothing we can do about that.
But in the TCU (Tyranius Cinematic Universe), we might be able to succeed as it might be an alternate timeline. Hard to say really. :)

I've broken down the treasure as best I can. Please pick from the pile and I'll sell the rest. Can no one use the wand of magic missiles? That's a great item, but if no one can use it, we should definitely sell.
There are some healing potions folks should take as well. Make sure you have something to pour down a friends throat as they lay dying. :)
For planning, it looks like we'll have a little over 3,500gp to divvy, maybe more depending on things like the wand. I'll have a final accurate tally when everyone has checked in and taken what they want.
Vanyan Kaleseder |
Checked the list, thank you, Aishe. Vanyan doesn't need the wand of Identify, sell that.
The First Aid gloves and the oils of daylight should be group buys, imho. And then whatever light sources y'all need too. Get those.

@ Tess. Atium has a +2 Warhammer. What added bonus does he get due to your song? I am assuming nothing- except the extra 1D6 Electricity damage 3 times per day. Right?

@ Vinas. I wanted to compliment you on your saying. I hope people instead say, "Why Don't you have a statue". That was classy and humble. A perfect reply from your character. Great Roleplaying touch.
I didn't say that in character because that's not a mindset Atium would have.
Again, Nice work!

Ha! Thank you, but I'd be remiss if I took credit for it. I stole it from Cato the Elder.

@Vanyan!!! Wooot! Woot! on the bar of soap reference. Your timing is uncanny. I'll explain why later. Just know it made me laugh for multiple reasons... one is Gary Gygaxian!
@Gm - the blur potion worked on one of the hits. I got under 20% on the last attack. Only 2 hits. I'll post my two saves soon.
Atium of Varg |
So, on a totally different PBP board, I posted the following Saturday... and BOOM! Vanyan drops a soap joke two days later.
Totally Out off game, but I LOVE the fact that Gygax included a rule where all PC's have a bar of soap on their person. Like soap is a free and unencumbered slot. I don't know the full folklore behind it, but I always smile at the quirkiness of it.
As an homage to Gygax/or original D & D, I try to include one bar of soap reference in any of my games. Just once, and then I put the old joke back in the toolbag.
Maybe Vanyan/supersage knows the Gygaxian folklore that I don't?
Vinas uth Antimanes |
I also take the soap. I remember an old article in dragon magazine, maybe late 80s, that included creative uses for mundane equipment. All my characters since then have carried soap and chalk.

@Atium- I generally do low is good for a hit. Any % I take from the top. So 80-100 would miss to stay as consistent as possible with what I have always done.
