Sorry, I've been sick, so I haven't been as active as I'd been hoping to be. I have to be up earlier than usual for work, so I will get a post in tomorrow.

![]() |

We need to adjust our marching order after this encounter. I intended to put myself in the middle of the group. The sorcerer does not want to be up front.

GM Z..D.. |

Feel free to adjust yourself. Just keep yourself in the general area of the party as you just teleported in.

![]() |

I will be away at a convention Thursday through Sunday. Please bot as needed.

GM Z..D.. |

Heads up. I will be at a convention this weekend so post may come or not. May just end up waiting until monday.

![]() |

I don't know what tricks the rest of you have, but for Lurgh, I don't see him making it another round if he stays to fight. The setup and tactics for this encounter are a bit brutal for a 4 player table.

GM Z..D.. |

The sad part is, this is with the four player adjustment. Originally there was supposed to be 8 "war birds" plus the Harpy Bard.

![]() |

I realized I stupidly forgot to re-buy a potion of fly. Shamak is now useless and low-HP... It is indeed a brutal encounter. And we almost made our saves!
Shamak doesn't have another trick up his sleeve.

GM Z..D.. |

I hate to say it, but soon we may have to call this fight. Unless someone has some tricks or boons that could help.

![]() |

No boons that'd help here, that I can think of. I'll do a better check in the morning.

GM Z..D.. |

If you are able to effectively withdraw from the harpies, then sure, but they are not just going to let just going to let you leave. This is the same group of harpies that have been attacking the caravans and leaving no one alive.

GM Z..D.. |

So, I looked a bit of forums in reference to this in Paizo. And there has been a lot of discussion about this ability over the years. The only one that I found that a rule came down on was that maintaining the song is a standard action. And unfortunately, a lot of table variation.
So let's dig in with the text.
Captivating Song: A harpy’s song has the power to infect the minds of those that hear it, calling them to the harpy’s side. When a harpy sings, all creatures aside from other harpies within a 300-foot spread must succeed on a DC 16 Will saving throw or become captivated. A creature that successfully saves is not subject to the same harpy’s song for 24 hours. A victim under the effects of the captivating song moves toward the harpy using the most direct means available. If the path leads them into a dangerous area such as through fire or off a cliff, that creature receives a second saving throw to end the effect before moving into peril. Captivated creatures can take no actions other than to defend themselves. A victim within 5 feet of the harpy simply stands and offers no resistance to the harpy’s attacks. This effect continues for as long as the harpy sings and for 1 round thereafter. This is a sonic mind-affecting charm effect. The save DC is Charisma-based.
What I bolded is what I am focusing on. The first bolded sentence is easy to understand, it moves toward the source.
The second is easy as well, if walking would put them peril, the get a new save.
The third sentence is a little weird, I get the whole take no actions but defend itself. To me the sentence refers to outside attacks from other sources and that the captivated person is not helpless. It does not say having to defend itself breaks the enchantment.
The fourth bolded line is what I think makes it so it does not break the effect.
And finally this is how I interpret it: That the captivated creature can take no actions but defend itself, not helpless, until the harpy ends it song.
I do think the only one that can even attempt a coup de grace is the harpy who is singing. But, I am not quite there yet.
TLDR: I am going with no, Outside attacks do not break the enchantment, but they do retain retain their full AC against such attacks.

GM Z..D.. |

I am putting initiative on hold for now to see if you all wanna call it.
Lurgh has successfully retreated and as I understand out of the fight.
Mavarion is captivated, and at the mercy of the harpies.
Tytus is blinded and is backed into a corner.
Shamak is up, but invisible and out of tricks and with no ability to fly, will most likely get a hit on the ones attacking at a range.
The leader still has a lot of resources. And the harpies are going to keep in the air.

![]() |

Indeed, you're right about the song, GM.
Sadly, I think we have to call it.
@Tytus: Well, you have an extract of monstrous physique I. If you happen to read the spell description, you'll see:
When you cast this spell, you can assume the form of any Small or Medium creature of the monstrous humanoid type. If the form you assume has any of the following abilities, you gain the listed ability: climb 30 feet, fly 30 feet (average maneuverability), swim 30 feet, darkvision 60 feet, low-light vision, and scent. If the form you assume has the aquatic subtype, you gain the aquatic and amphibious subtypes.

GM Z..D.. |

Go ahead and roll day job checks so I can work on chronicles.

Perform sad Growl: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (3) + 15 = 18

![]() |

Prof:Fisherman: 10 + 6 = 16
I think the issue is with the scenario itself. You have two fights back to back with no chance of resting and healing up in between and you are put in a situation where it is almost guaranteed to split the party as someone is bound to fail that save.

![]() |

Sleight of Hand, boon and vanity bonuses: 1d20 + 24 ⇒ (20) + 24 = 44
Not sure what to make of it.

GM Z..D.. |

Lurgh, I agree. The tactics in this scenario are harsh, especially with the harpy encounter. Even if that harpy failed to captivate, you have five to eight other harpies that can do it as well, once they get low enough on HP.
The purple harpy is loaded in magical gear, she is one of the most optimized NPC's I have seen. She has something for just about every situation.
In reference to the chronicles, since you did not complete the third encounter, you do not get the 1 exp. And defeating the final boss and the Purple Harpy is your first prestige point.
The second one was taking the aspis guy in the previous encounter back to the society for questioning.
Does anyone have a boon to grant you prestige points in case of failure? I know some of the confirmation or wounded wisp has something like that.
And then comes to the matter of dealing with the deaths. I am pretty sure Mavarion and Tytus will both succumb to the harpies. If you could please put down how you intend to pay for it so I can mark it on your chronicles.
Shamak, unless he has a way to out run the harpies, is most likely done for. Granted he is still invisible, since I do not think that spell breaks invisibility.

GM Z..D.. |

Keep in mind, you are blinded and covered in glitterdust, so they can see you. But, you can still fly and since there is nothing to stumble over in air, I would say the penalty to fall prone is none existent. So there is a chance you could possibly fly away from them.

![]() |

Shamak has a lot of invisibility and haste spells left. And I don't think Ghost sound counts as an attack against an opponent.

GM Z..D.. |

since this is also for OSP, I will need emails for boon distribution. I am not sure how they select or if someone rolls randomly or what. If you do not feel like posting them here feel free to PM.

![]() |

Oh yeah, body recovery. I'll pay 5 PP for the rescue, and another 16 for a resurrection.
My e-mail is teddyberman@gmail.com.
Regardless of the outcome, thanks for the game!

Indeed! Thanks for the game!
