Duraz relaxes in a chair. It feels good to be out of armor for once. He hears the man entering and looks at him. He pays a round to Singol, Mirianna and Haldyr.
He wants to ask them what they make of the recent happenings, but instead he says "There's a storm coming."

Artival Brisboir |

The large man in shining armor smiles as he sees the town ahead of him. It’d been a fairly long trip, and he could think of nothing bette than tucking into some warm food and cool mead before Naversel in the morning.
This Town is Inolen, or is this just a stopping point on the way, GM?
Artival lets his nose lead the way, knowing he will be able to smell the inn before he sees it. Once he finds the Inn, he heads in, looking for an empty table, and a chance to rest his weary feet. As the server approaches, he asks for a bowl of the stew, and some crusty bread to finish off the broth with. ”And whatever cool drink you have would wash everything down wonderfully,” he adds with a smile as he takes a long stretch in his chair.

![]() |

@Artival: you're in Hemden. There's a map of the town on Slide 10. Inolen is the unlabeled circle on the bottom middle of the map on Slide 1. The area around Hemden is on the map on Slide 6. Inolen is just off that map SE of Trarnven.
A serving woman nods at Artival and a few minutes later brings a bowl of spicy fish stew, fresh bread and a mug dark ale over to him. She's a younger human woman in her early 20s with long dark hair.
"Here you go sir? Will you be wanting a room too? We're near all full with the fair tomorrow!" she says to him smiling.

Artival Brisboir |

”Sure, a room would be great. Tell me more about the fair? I planned on traveling through in the morning, but I’m not really in a big rush. It might be fun to stay around for a day or so and play some games,” he adds with a big goofy grin.
His coin purse was still relatively full, so one or two days before continuing his journey might be a pleasant little stopover.

Singol of the Black Mesa |

Singol is busy at his meal. The food and drink help wash out the taste of dirt and decay.
He glances at the door whenever someone walks in, seeing who might be familiar, or trouble. A large human in shining armor catches his attention.
"That man there, he reminds of the business with that human girl and her suiter. Is that tomorrow?" Singol remarks to his companions.

Mirianna Tangier |

"Ah! We've spent so long crawling about underground, I'd nearly forgotten- what is it we needed to do again?"

![]() |

With a chuckle, Duraz answers "They asked us to duel a champion in their favor. I was against such action then and am against it now. But such service was pledged. Where is that warrior that agreed to it again? Anyway, I would be nothing against going there and telling them we don't plan on fighting anymore, if we won't. If you want, you can find yourselves someone to do it."

Mirianna Tangier |

"Aye, but we gave our word. If no one else will do it, I will dual the warrior myself."

Mirianna Tangier |

I have magic weapon that I can use on anyone doing the duel pre-fight; unfortunately expeditious retreat and shield are both personal so I can only use them on me

Artival Brisboir |

”A duel? Well, I certainly hadn’t planned on that, but maybe it’d make a good story...”
He climbs to his feet, taking his bowl of stew and his half finished drink with him.
He nods at the table. ”Mind if I join you? The lovely lady over there me tioned something about a duel? And a joust? Tell me more,” he asks, waiting for an invitation before sitting down.

Mirianna Tangier |

"Yes- it was a matter here, a daughter in love and a father who had forbidden it, if I recall correctly. Our previous companion had offered to stand for the would be son in law in a duel to earn the couple the right to wed."
"The girl's name is Talla, and her beloved is a young farmer named Jerand, but her father Master Frompir has enlisted a skilled and well equipped champion, so we agree to stand in for Jerand."

Artival Brisboir |

”Standing on the right side of love? What more important mission is there in the world? Is the father and his champion evil or just misguided? I’m no experienced jouster, but I could possibly give it a shot,” he offers.

![]() |

Duraz scoffs and stays silent. He says "Well, we are investigating a temple just outside of town, where we think there is a wizard summoning evil outsiders. I believe that can take some precedence."

Singol of the Black Mesa |

"Welcome stranger. I'm Singol." He chuckles and counts on his fingers. "Another volunteer to fight for the happy couple. How many does that make, including Mirianna?"
The halfling accepts a plate of cheese and bread from the serving wench.
"The temple on the other hand. Angry dead and statues that hate halflings. Not a pleasant place. Though I suppose it might be better than the eyeless monsters in that other place."
"Other than that, there's a festival in town! Did you come for that?"

![]() |

The serving maid brings new drinks to the party.
"Are you going to the festival too?" She touches her chin. "Aren't you standing in for the champion?" she asks.
- - - -
A minute later Talla cames in and looks frantic. She heads to the party as well.
"Friends I have not heard from you!?!? Are you helping me? My honor is at stake!"

![]() |

Duraz stays silent and takes a sip from his mug. Mirianna is the one who is adamant on keeping their word, so he lets her deal with the situation.

Mirianna Tangier |

Marianna nods, "Aye- I will help since the others who made the pact seem missing."

Mirianna Tangier |

"But of course," turning to Artival, "Just before the fight allow me to enhance one of your weapons."
I will cast Magic Weapon which lasts 2 minutes and give the weapon +1- I do not believe it stacks with an already magic weapon

Mirianna Tangier |

If he has the magic long sword I can cast magic weapon on his shield for a potential shield bash or on a secondary weapon in case he's disarmed- never hurts to be careful in a prepared fight light this.

Artival Brisboir |

Arty gives a low whistle as he takes the sword hilt. ”Now that’s a fine blade! My sword has served me well, but this is quite magnificent. Are you sure you’d let me use this? I think Heironeous himself would be impressed!”

I'm using the Kalamar setting :) the closest to Heironeous is the knight of the gods. We're in the Brandobian area so we would be called Brovadol.
"Thank you sir! The joust is tomorrow morning so I suggest that you rest up!"
anything else before you sleep?

![]() |

After successfully ignoring the duel business, Duraz retires to his room for a good night sleep. He dreams of ghost horses entering a mausoleum.
@Mirianna, I think you only have caster level 1. (Talking about duration of Magic Weapon)

Mirianna Tangier |

Practiced spellcaster increases my caster level for the purposes of spells by up to 4 lost levels from multi-classing, so I only have 1st level spells known but cast as 2nd level currently

Everyone retires and gets a well needed night's rest. Early in the morning as you dress and head down to the common room. You see it's filled with travelers and townsfolk. The cook has prepared hot oatmeal and fresh bread with large helpings of hot mulled wine, fresh fruit, butter and blackberry jam.
Two of the cooks gossip in a hallway.
""Lord Stendahl is up to no good in that keep of his. He
scarcely comes out except at night and looks all pale.""

assuming you head out
Talla finds you near the jousting grounds with are getting packed with spectators. "I've convicned my father to rent a war horse for you. It's only fitting! He maybe convinced to rent some plate armor. As I think it is called."
The rules for the contest are - The
contestants will compete in a steeple chase with the shortest
time earning one point for this portion of the event. The next
event requires prowess in lance use. Each contestant makes
three attempts at hooking a ring with a lance while charging on
a horse. The horseman with the most accurate catches out of
three tries wins this portion of the event and two points. The
contest closes with a battle of personal combat, in which pairs of
contestants face one another.
She continues. "My father will want you to face his man Gruthal in the second round"

![]() |

”I’d never turn down proper assistance, assuming that is within the rules of a duel. Is that an acceptable practice for duels around here,” he turns and asks Talla.
"That is fine. But no one other than the direct foe, can use magic directly on the opponent."
ie no casting magic missile, charm person or spells that like on the foe unless the person fighting is a caster

Talla leads you to her father.
"Father these adventurers would like to have loan of a suit of plate!"
He looks at the party.
"Indeed." He scowls. "Pointy ears and this rabble is ALL you can get to defend your honor. And YET you still insist on marrying a peasant!"
She looks upset.

Artival Brisboir |

”Sir, I’m Artival Brisboir, and I’m here to defend the honor of your daughter. I might be rabble, but I intend on putting forth all my effort on her behalf. Seems like you might favor a duel with both participants on somewhat equal footing,” he offers.
Diplomacy 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (20) + 6 = 26

Singol makes sure to have plenty of breakfast.
Listening to the cooks, he forms a distressing image of Lord Stendahl in his imagination.
Back with the party, "Any of you hear that about this Lord Stendahl? I know, gossip. But with all we've been through the past few days, could there be something wrong about this lord?"

Michael Lyons 953 |

At the words from Talla's father, Singol tries to discretely stay out of sight of her father.

The father Frompir turns to Artival.
"I thank you for aiding her. But I fear it's too late. She's lost in my eyes." He points to a light war horse and a suit of plate.
"But there's your horse and armor." He rubs his chin. "I expect it back. I'll loan it to you for 20 gold."

assuming you put it on. for the 1st part of the tournament, it's jousting to hit a ring. So you'd make 3 attack rolls for 3 tries.
Duraz sees a great number of townsfolk and visitors gather in the grand stands. With vendors selling food.
"Fresh pies!" calls out one. "Get your fresh apple pie!"

Artival Brisboir |

Artival pays the man the 20 gold (and deducts it from his sheet).
The man’s stomach grumbles as he smells the scent of pie in the air. However he tried to maintain his focus and only pay attention to his attacks to the rings. He waits to see if the group planned on enhancing his aim any before he started his competition.
Any buffs for the first part?

I have magic weapon- since you already have a magic sword for the duel I can cast it on your lance for +1 to your rolls?

Singol of the Black Mesa |

Duraz gets himself a piece of pie and offers to his newfound companions.
"Thank you, Duraz." Singol takes his time eating the piece of pie.
"I might have to get a second one. Or something else. Certainly there will be more sampling of what is offered. Professional curiosity, you know."

Artival Brisboir |

That’d be great, Mirianna.
The Paladin grabs the lance, feeling the heft before making his runs on his borrowed horse.
Attack one with magic weapon 1d20 + 5 + 1 ⇒ (15) + 5 + 1 = 21
Attack two 1d20 + 5 + 1 ⇒ (18) + 5 + 1 = 24
Attack three 1d20 + 5 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 5 + 1 = 13
He hopped off the steed when finished, looking for his name on the leaderboard.

Aritval manages to hook a ring and the crowd cheers!
While some of the other contestants miss entirely.
He moves into the next round of personal combat.
they give you padded weapons so there's no -4 penalty for nonlethal
The announcer cries out "Fight fair men!"
A man who's not Talla's father's man is selected to fight Artival. He's wearing leather armor.
"Alright.." he says staring at the paladin. "Are you ready?"
The announcer calls out. "Let the battle begin!"
@aritval you knew they were using padded weapons if you want buffs on a weapon
