Gaven Deverin |
I should just mention that I live in Western Canada, and therefor I'm probably in a later timezone than some of you.
Gaven Deverin |
And I somehow missed the fact that Lani healed me... Let's change that Lay on Hands into a Raised Shield, if that's okay
Wandering Wastrel |
OK, that's two votes for leaving, which is half the group. Rather than risk a split I'm going to say that you left and came back.
The AP is slightly vague on what happens if you do this, but it doesn't say that the place gets re-stocked with monsters on your return.
So heal up, restore your spell slots and we'll take it from where we left off!
Gaven Deverin |
No worries. Surely the DM will make mistakes as well as the players.
Btw Lani, Gaven actually has a -2 to athletics. Armour penalty mostly.

All I could find in the book on it is this:
Critical successes usually have greater effects than
regular successes. For instance, if you succeed at a Strike,
you deal damage, but if you critically succeed, you deal
double damage. If an ability doesn’t specify a critical
success effect, then the effect for a critical success is the
same as that for a success. A critical success counts as a
success for rules that have different effects depending on
whether you succeed or fail.
So, if precision damage doesn't state it is doubled on a critical, it just stays the way it is.
Oddly enough, precision damage says the following:
Precision damage increases an attack’s damage rather
than being a separate pool of damage. For example, a
dagger Strike that deals 1d6 precision damage from sneak
attack increases the piercing damage by 1d6. A creature
that was immune to precision damage would ignore the
1d6 but take the rest of the damage from the Strike.
The precision damage becomes part of the regular damage pool, which then should be doubled upon a crit. I think you played it right. I tried googling it, but oddly enough there's little to no discussion about it on the forums other than one post going 'could you please clarify this in the ruleset?'.
tl;dr: I too think precision damage gets doubled.
Wandering Wastrel |
@Edric - dying knocked you unconscious, which put you prone. I take it you're going to try and attack from prone (-2 modifier) rather than stand up (which provokes another AoO)?
@Irfan - thanks, that's my take on it too. Slightly surprising though, especially since it's a major departure from PF1.
Just waiting on Gaven, who gets a retributive strike!
Wandering Wastrel |
Well done everyone, you survived. There's a very small amount of 'fluff'/storytelling to get through, but you've essentially finished part 1! Feel free to fill in the playtest feedback.
IMPORTANT NOTE: you will be coming back to these characters so you may want to track the loot that they have.
IMPORTANT NOTE II: for the next part of the AP you will be using new characters. They will be 4th level and should be an established adventuring group that is used to trekking the wilderness and doing things like Osirian tomb-raiding and suchlike. You will start the adventure having been hired to cross a dangerous tract of terrain, so some of you should have characters suited to exploring the wilderness. Rangers and druids would make good choices, but you should still strive to create a balanced party with a variety of characters rather than multiples of the most wilderness-focused classes.
If you want to give some thought to what you will play next, I will wrap up this part of the AP and we can move forward on Monday/Tuesday.
EDIT: assuming you're still good to continue? Personally I'm thinking about firing the damn rulebook into the sun - without the searchable pdf I would have long since given up trying to find anything.
Gaven Deverin |
Searchable pdf is a life saver. Maybe if I had a physical copy the book might not be quite as much of a pain to flip through, but it's driving me insane.
By wilderness, do you just mean desert, or are there other alternatives?
Yeah I'm still good to continue
Wandering Wastrel |
Physical book is an actual nightmare. I don't mind flipping between a couple of different places, but this is a whole new level of pain. I didn't think it was possible to organise information this badly.
Without giving too much away, desert is among the wildernesses that you will be trekking in this next chapter.
Gaven Deverin |
Do we have new backgrounds to use, or do we select from the book this time?
And any idea about the level of magic item our current characters get? I want to know if any of the following options apply.
- A 2nd level magic item, and a 1st level magic item
- Three 1st level magic items
Gaven Deverin |
Working on characters. So far all I've got is:
- Spellcaster
- Human (either Taldan, Garund, or Keleshite)
That's it folks! But I am excited
Oh and what about starting monies?
Wandering Wastrel |
@Gaven - yes, you can take a 2nd and 1st level item instead of the 3rd level item, or 3 1st level items.
Character Generation for Chapter 2
4th level
Background from the PF2 rulebook
Languages: three languages — Auran, Gnoll, and Ancient Osiriani — might open up additional role-playing or investigatory opportunities in this
chapter; you have access to those languages in addition to whatever is stated in the Ancestry section. However, knowledge of these languages isn’t required for the playtest to work.
Equipment: Each character begins with one 3rd-level item, two 2nd-level items, one 1st-level item, and 300 sp to spend on additional items. You already know one another, so you can pool money together to buy something if you want to.
Gaven Deverin |
Awesome! I've dedicated pretty much my entire day towards character creation.
I've narrowed it down to 7 potential characters...
1 bard, 3 clerics, 1 druid, 1 sorcerer, 1 wizard
Gaven Deverin |
Weird question: Do we happen to exist around Shiman-Sekh? It's south of the Alamein Peninsula and the Coast of Graves.
Gaven Deverin |
OHHHHHH and here I thought we were in Osirion. Okay well that helps big time!
ARABIAN NIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIGHTS!!!!!!
Gaven Deverin |
Going druid. Damage focused with survivalist skills
Edit:
- I grew up in a small village that no longer exists. I was raised to become a shaman for the village, but Gnolls rampaged without warning. My people were slaughtered save those who were enslaved. Thanks to my master's sacrifice, I managed to survive. I have wandered the wastes ever since, a drifter in the wind.
- I first met the party when I was hired to escort them across the desert in search of an ancient Osirion tomb. I was never keen on escorting people, but it was my best bet at earning some coin.
- One time we ran out of food and water in the desert. I saved the party with a combined effort of scavenging the wasteland and spellcasting Goodberry and Create Water.
- I have come to like these adventurers, as strange as they might be. Until the wind shifts I will happily follow them.
Lani Bralani |
Sorry, didn't have a chance to check in yesterday.
I had statted up a half-elf druid (Order of the Storm) during the site's extended downtime for use in this part of the playtest, but I can go a different route if you'd rather not have two druids. A barbarian, perhaps?
Irfán Arasindaki |
I'll take the time to browse through the .pdf, but my initial thoughts are to go for either wizard or ranger. I love me some crossbows and it seems the ranger is all about that.
Gaven Deverin |
I don't mind re-rolling as barbarian if you want to keep your druid, Gaven.
Thanks Brainiac, I did spend the day making her.
Edric 'Godly' |
2 people marked this as a favorite. |
I'll build whatever we need to round the party out - depends mostly what Irfan goes for.
Also - I was running part 1 yesterday and borrowed Irfan and Gaven as NPC's to go with my 2 players.
Let's just say that by the end of the session "God damn it Gaven!" was the group's new catchphrase. And Irfan has the voice of a nine year old boy...
Edric 'Godly' |
Miss a lot mostly.
My dice were crazy swing-y, it was 1,2,19,20 all day and almost nothing in between.
You did eat about 50HP of damage for the party but only landed about 4 hits, and you were the parties only frontliner! :D
