A more Savage Sandpoint. A new look at an old friend.

I have always had a sweet spot for what I consider Paizo's first AP. I have played in a campaign or two making a run at it but they went the way of all flesh as PBP's tend to do. So when I saw that Savage Worlds had created a licensed version of Pathfinder and were adapting this campaign I thought I would try my hand. As I am still rather new at running play-by-post game I am focusing on Burnt Offerings as a way to find my feet. If this works then we can consider the rest of the AP, and if the game crashes in flames, well at least it will have been different.

Players will require ready access to the Savage Worlds for Pathfinder core rules. If you want to use information from the Savage Worlds for Pathfinder Advanced Players Guide or the Savage Worlds for Pathfinder Companion etc you will need that book as well. There is no SRD and the Pathfinder version make enough changes to the base Savage Worlds rules that you really can't fake it.

Normally at this point I would ask you to answer a bunch of questions about your character or from their perspective but this is a savage worlds game so I'm going to run an interlude.

For those of you who have the book open to pg 157 and go for it.
For those of you who do not have the book yet grab a standard deck of playing cards or a deck simulator online and draw a card. Tell me what it is in a post below and I'll reply with a prompt related to your character. Write as much or as little as you like based on the prompt. In my head I see this as a snippet from you characters pre-game life. Maybe a story they told around a campfire or something that happened on their way to Sandpoint, but it can be anything really. And rest assured that nothing in the interlude actually commits you to anything. So if you write an interlude about a ship's wizard who was kicked off their ship in for sins as unforgivable as they are undisclosed but then decide to play a Nature Oracle with a souped up murder hound. No problem. Do not be too surprised though if you later meet an ex-ships wizard playing cards in the Rusty Dragon.

Don't worry about creating a full character right now unless you want to. Though if you do then the character generation is book standard as detailed on page 19. We will be using the updated rules from the Advanced guide so if you do not have that then a couple of your powers might not work exactly like you expect them to.

Also if you are new to Savage Worlds don't worry too much about diving in. I am pretty good with the rules and the game really does not have any 'trap' choices. Besides if you make a choice you hate then ret-conning is easy enough to manage.

This is also the space where you can ask me questions or try to talk me into house ruling something that annoys you.

That is likely too much from me. Come on in grab a seat, let Ameiko get you a drink and tell us all a little story.....

I am so very in. I'm thinking about a rogue or a druid for this character.

I have yet to buy any of the books, so I can't even guess what kind of class I'll take, so...I drew a Queen of Hearts.

Also, for summoning or shape-shifting, what bestiaries are available? SWD Core? My understanding is that the Pathfinder Core Rules have a pretty limited bestiary? Do any of the supplementary books have more?

I always keep my eye out for 'new' systems, and I have heard about Savage Worlds before. I actually have the Core Rulebook, but never really carefully read through it (too many humble bundles symptom I guess :D).

So I am a noob to the system, but still would throw my hat in the ring. And with a simple concept just because I love the aesthetics of it - a Ranger. Decent with both blade and bow, patrolling the wilds around Sandpoint, living a somewhat reclusive life (some locals might perhaps fear and distrust him), but coming into town relatively often to trade the produce of his hunts and forays, selling loot gotten from the occasional scuffle with bandits, or even looking for the odd job.

I imagine him as someone gruff but trustworthy, and not afraid to get his hands dirty either in a scuffle, shoveling manure, or just helping a farmer with his/her crops - I think an half-orc would be a great fit, and I definitely hope Rangers in Savage Worlds get some sort of Animal Companion :)

Let me know if this is the kind of blurb you are looking for.

Disclaimer: I like strong, well-rounded and capable characters, but powergaming and too much complexity from the get-go, will make me shy away. So I hope SW is not as crunchy as PF currently is, and falls more along the lines of a PF 'Core-only' game, or something similar to it.

Looking forward to your interlude. Want me to draw you a card or can you cover this using your book?

Hi, there! I'm not the GM for this game, obviously, but I'm pretty familiar with the system so I can try to assist (as long as GM does not mind me jumping in).

The Pathfinder for Savage Worlds Core Rules does have a bestiary, but it is not huge (though it does have some expanded options you won't find in the Savage Worlds Core Rulebook).

There is also a Pathfinder for Savage Worlds Bestiary, which has a ton more options.

I'll work on that today. :)

I've got it covered! This will be my submission for the game: Meet Merri

For anyone having trouble with putting a character together, savaged.us is a handy tool. It's not quite as polished as Pathbuilder or Wanderer's Guide, but it is still really helpful.

Re: Summoning and Shapeshifting. Well there is the Pathfinder for Savage Worlds Bestiary. You could get by without it pretty easily. Summon ally can do a lot of heavy lifting here and the core book animals can keep you in alternate forms for a good while. Worst case you just might not know exactly what a shape/summons can do before hand. Thwat could even be fun.

Interlude: please riff on one or more of the following.
~Downtime. You practice a non profession related skill. What is it? Why?
~Backstory. Tell a tale of your greatest love - lost, found, present or waiting elsewhere.
~Trek. Tell us about someone you met along the way - A merchant, a fellow traveler, a bard or a hero, etc. Who were they and what happened?

Albion Welcome.

Just double checking that you have/can get access to the Pathfinder for Savage Worlds core book? See link in first post. THE SW core rule are great but this game will be using the Pathfinder specific version and there are some differences, mainly in gear and Pathfinder has a tightly curated set of allowed edges. You will want to get a copy if it wasn't in the humble bundle.

The Ranger sounds great and should fit in well. As far as crunch I put SW well below Pathfinder. Somewhere between Pathfinder 2 and D&D fifth edition sounds about right. Other people have other opinions on this though.

Your Interlude - King of Spades. Riff on one or more of the following.
~Downtime. You spend time alone in quiet contemplation. What are you doing, what are you thinking about?
~Backstory. Tell a tale about a great victory or personal triumph.
~Trek. Tell about a difficult obstacle you negotiated along the way.

You are correct unfortunately - what I have is the core rulebook for SW, and not the PF edition. Which means I most likely will not be throwing my hat in the ring after all, since I feel the dollar investment for a game we are not sure to participate in, nor to ever play again, is a tad steep.

Queen of spades. I've got the basic book and see the Interludes. Do you want us to provide something for Downtime, background, and trek, or pick one and go with that?

Thinking about a Human Witch of indeterminate age... though she looks old the way she presents herself her visage has been known to change depending upon the situation.

Rats. Understood, and I would use an SRD if it existed but rats.

Hmmmmm... That humble bundle didn't include the latest Superpowers companion by any chance did it? I am also running a SW supers game on these boards and we could use some new blood. Interested?

Note this goes for everyone the supers game could use a new player so drop me a line/post if you are interested.

@Poor Wandering GM Ooh, what game?

I have a couple potential characters I've submitted for traditional PF games. Once I hear back on how many (if any) of those get picked, I may have room to take on another game. I definitely have interest.

Ok, I will grab this chance to ask a question - if we were playing around the table, and you brought the SW PF Core Rulebook, and we all read from it, created our characters based on it and passed it around the table for years to come while we played, everything would be fine. Right?

Why is it not allowed for you to share a non-downloadable copy of the rules with potential players? Isn’t that kind of the exact same thing? This question has popped multiple times in my head but I never asked it. So there it is. Isn’t it ok, as long as people cannot download the actual file?

Looking for a few bad people... The overall story is Iron/Bronze age aliens invaded a late silver age world. (iron/ bronze and Silver refer to comic eras. Feel free to ignore) The heroes resisted and got squished. The major villains were hunted down and squished/vanished. You are what is left. B-team heroes and also ran villains. A bit tougher than kite-man but he is much closer to you than say Nightwing.

Can you free the earth? Do you want to?

Give it a look.

Oooh, Necessary Evil! Nice.

I ran the Breakout campaign years ago but have never been able to play in a NE game myself. I will look into that.

Start from the most recent post in that thread and work backwards to find the latest seeking new players post. If you start from the beginning you will have a long and winding road.

I’ll leave that up to you. You can write about one if it catches you fancy or you can bounce through all of them if that is the mood that takes you.

I like this version of the witch at first glance. What draws you too it?

I had an NPC in one of my games that was a witch, and I really enjoyed her, so I thought I'd try to create her as a PC. Still needing to read about the PF class a little more, but I think it comes closest to re-creating Cajuna.

Good question. Do you know of anyone offering to host files so that they are viewable by multiple people but are not downloadable? The closest I have come across is the way D&D Beyond lets you share PDF's with select other accounts. This only works for files you purchased through D&D Beyond and I think you have to have a paid account in any case. I doubt anyone is doing this because they would be very vulnerable to accusations of piracy But if you know someone who has squared that circle then please clue me in.

Sweet I am playing a witch now in a Pf1 game. They are fun though I dislike how expensive replacement familiars at low levels. Looking forward to your interlude and your witch.

You got it. The Four of clubs. Since you asked I am assuming that you do not yet have the Core rules. No sweat but you will need them or at least easy access to enter the game. The link to the Supers game is in my 10:56 post if you want to wander over.

Your Interlude - Four of Clubs. Riff on one or more of the following.
~Downtime. Your hero broods or is angry about something. What is it, and how do they resolve the issue? Do they do something they regret? Or does the issue still rankle?
~Backstory: Tell a tale of misfortune from your hero’s past, perhaps revealing something of their Hindrances or a dark secret.
~Trek. Tell of hardship you endured on your way - The tragic death of a favored companion, spoiled or lost supplies, a mechanical breakdown, abysmal weather, and so on.

I will buy the Core shortly; I am also happy to "pass my rules around the table" if that would be helpful for anyone ;)

Brooding post shortly ...

SOLUTION : using Google Drive, in the share window make sure access is “anyone with the link", after that, click the gear wheel in the top-right corner of the access window, and un-check “Viewers and commentators can see the option to download, print, and copy".

I have not verified that this works as intended myself, and as you said, it raises potential copyright questions, and altho a reader could screenshot each page to re-build the book, with up to two hundred pages, that's impractical.

If anyone already has a Google Drive account, and is willing to take the risk, go for it!

PWGM - I am buying the core book today, and will spend the next few days reading it and picking a class, so it may be a few days before I get to the Interlude...

PWGM - so, I have some questions about the system, and a couple of ideas I'd like to run by you.

If I just take Arcane Background, does that mean I don't get *any* Class Edges or Prestige Edges? Is there some compensation for that?

Historically, slings are just as powerful as arrows, and I spent some time on the PEG boards hashing out some modifications to slings - I was wondering if you'd take a look and let me know if you'd allow them?

Slings:

New Edge :
Trained Slinger
Requirements: Novice, Strength d6+, Athletics d8+, Familiarity (sling)
The Range of the sling is increased to 12/24/48 (due to extensive training). This also increases damage to Str+d6, and adds +1 damage to Breaking Things.

By 0 AD, aerodynamically shaped stones and lead “bullets” were being made for slings, and would be commonly available until the late medieval age :
Weight 2 lb for 20 bullets/stones; cost $8.
Using randomly picked-up stones inflicts a –1 to the Athletics roll, and –1 to the damage.

I'm also interested in maybe making a magic user that deals mainly with illusions. In addition to the Illusion power, I have some trappings for existing powers that could act like illusions. Once I have a complete list, I'll post it here for your opinion. If you think this might be too hard to adjudicate, I came up with a short document about how to handle illusions (mostly when to allow saving throws to disbelieve them) that I could PM you if you're interested.

P.S. on the Sling info :

More Sling stuff:

Notes
- Brute is very useful with a sling : the Athletics skill becomes linked to Strength, removing the need to boost 2 Attributes to do well. And the range can be increased slightly.
- Trained slingers were notorious for their head shots, so use Called Shots (–4) and Aim or Marksmen to target un-helmeted foes.
- Using a Called Shot to a sword (–2) with Aim or Marksman, a strong slinger (d8+) has a good chance of breaking it.

Scarab Sages

I don't have the books needed at this time, but I'm tempted enough to draw a card.

Hard to say what I'd play since I haven't perused the books, but if the SW rules treat some of the classes that don't work all that well under standard pathfinder better, like say the Cavalier, I might go that direction.

A Cleric might be interesting if they get a better deal on skills and other things to give them more versatility.

I drew a Queen of Diamonds from HERE

Sorry for the info flood, but reading the Core Rules has set my brain on fire.

I'm looking at :
Half-Elf or Human
Sorcerer (Arcane or Air Elemental bloodline)

I probably won't be going the illusions route, so ignore everything I said above about that.

But, I do take issue with the Favored Powers Class Edge. It doesn't have any of the spells I'm thinking of taking in it. Being able to ignore 2 points of any Spellcasting penalties is a significant benefit, but it's wasted unless I take those specific Powers. Being able to ignore range, lighting, or Wounds would be really nice - any thoughts on that?

I'll get Cajuna stats and background up this weekend.

Re AB. Not quite sure what you mean here but I will take a stab. Yes the AB's Magic and Miracles are available edges for anyone who qualifies. Taking or not taking a AB edge does not restrict you from taking a class/prestige edge in any way. The game gives you a free Class, background or professional of your choice (that you qualify for) as part of character creation but there is nothing stopping you from say taking AB magic as your free edge and then taking a Class edge either right away as say your human free edge or at any point later. The only restriction on Class edges is that you cannot take more than one per rank. As far as compensation I do not understand the question. They are separate edges. Please let me know if I misunderstood what you were looking for here.

Re Slings. That edge is seriously overpowered. With that edge slings surpass the comp bow. Very not allowed. Brute already gives slings a solid boost so stick with that and if a problem is seen in play with slings being too under powered we can find a solution.

Re Illusion.Illusions in SW seem to work pretty well but I will be happy look at whatever you like.

Good news on skills then. Everyone, barring an edge, hindrance. or ancestry saying otherwise, gets the same amount of skills.

You do not have to take that class edge. There are other edges that allow you to avoid things like wound penalties etc. Surprised you are not considering Bolt, Protection or Elemental Manip. These are solid powers.

In any case this is a future problem. Favored Powers is Seasoned so yu can see i play if you might find those powers useful.

Mirri’s Interlude

Diamond & Downtime: The character studies or works on an object of some sort. What is it?

Mirri sits on a stump thumbing through a small notebook. She pulls out a piece of paper stuffed between the cover and the back page and smooths it out carefully on her leg. Rhythmically, she recites in a small voice:

"The Road goes ever on and on
Down from the door where it began.
Now far ahead the Road has gone,
And I must follow, if I can,
Pursuing it with eager feet,
Until it joins some larger way
Where many paths and errands meet.
And whither then? I cannot say."

She says the poem quietly aloud a few times. Then, her brow furrowed, she grabs a pen and copies it down in her little book using tight, neat lines of script. Once finished, she reaches down, grabs a handful of dirt, and sprinkles it on the page to help the ink dry. She blows the excess dirt away, and then grins.

"Hey, anyone want to hear a poem?" she calls to the group. "I picked this one up from a halfling fellow in Riddleport. He said it's a traditional poem his family has passed down for generations; apparently, they are some kind of famous wherever he's from."

Reading her compatriots' faces at the prospect of hearing yet another poem, she exclaims, "This one is a good one, I promise!" Without waiting for further permission, she hops to her feet and begins "The Road goes ever on and on..."

Interlude Text:
Sitting near the fireplace of the Inn is a beautiful woman named Zahara, with radiant blonde hair, golden eyes, and a lyrical voice. She wears a well-tailored dark gown with embroidered butterflies and small sparkly gems representing star constellations. Sitting at her feet is a majestic cat, a full grown snow leopard. The woman has a plate of food and feeds some meat to the cat from time to time.

Clustered around her are others drawn to the fire listening to her tell a story. Some are children, some regulars, and a few admiring young men.

"This is Dezy," she says, stroking the cat's head a few times for emphasis. "I was living in Whitethrone where my parents were Magnimar ambassadors to Irrisen. I was a teenager. Some visiting nobles from Magnimar asked my father if he could negotiate a permit to allow them to do some hunting in the Kodar mountains. My father got the permit and recommended some local guides to direct them to the mountains. I asked if I could go along. I was always looking for chances to see new places. I am, afterall, a daughter of Desna, Goddess of travelers." She points to the butterflies on her gown to underline the point.

"My father was not inclined to allow it, but I batted my eyes and pouted." Zahara demonstrates for emphasis. One of the young men swoons a bit. "Daddy can't say no when I do that, but he insisted I have a bodyguard or three, so he hired some extra rangers to escort me. It was a wonderful trip. The mountains are very rugged and, since it borders on Irrisen, the land of eternal winter, there was snow covering them year round. The guides knew some ways to get up into a pass and the hunters spotted some majestic dire rams. They set off stalking the creatures. They pursued them high into the mountains, but the rams were much better at navigating the icy rocks and got away. A storm was coming, so the group sought a cave for shelter."

Unfortunately, the cave the hunters entered turned out to be the lair of a momma snow leopard. She pounced on the hunters and killed one and would have killed the other had not my ranger bodyguards intervened and killed her. The other hunter was badly wounded. While the rangers tended to him, I heard something farther back in the cave. I ventured into the shadows and discovered why the momma was so fierce. She had a cub. He was weaned but still very young. I made friends with him and we've been besties ever since.

"That was years ago. My parents are now ambassadors here in Sandpoint and I've been studying with Archodelios, a very wise scholar and sorcerer. If you have any questions about anything, there's a good chance I know the answer." She sips a mug of hard cider and feeds Dezy some more meat. "Now it's someone else's turn to tell a story."

There's a terminology problem I've discovered in the system : "Class Edge" can refer to the Edge that gives you a particular class, and also to all the specific, higher-ranking Edges available only to that class.

With that in mind, if I take the plain-vanilla AB Edge, I doubt that qualifies me to take any of the other higher-ranking Class Edges from any magic class I want, right? That's my issue. The higher-ranking Class Edges offer some pretty powerful perks, often more than a regular Edge would provide. Also, some classes like Sorcerer and Cleric offer perks in the form of Deities and Bloodlines. So if I decide to go the classless AB route, I'm losing a lot potential perks.

But this is all academic now, as I've decided to be a Sorcerer (but different enough from Clebsch's that there shouldn't be a problem).

Ok, I'd like a ruling on the following situation : I'm a Sorcerer, with the Air Elemental Bloodline which allows me to Fly at Pace 6". I shape-change into a non-flying creature - am I still able to fly? All the spell says is that I'm able to "retain my Edges and Hindrances, and my Smarts, Spirit, and their linked skills". Of the new form, it says "a creature's natural abilities are conferred, but innate powers and Arcane Backgrounds aren't." Nothing about retaining (or not) *MY* (super)natural abilities.

What's your call?

Looks like we're heavy on magic and a little light on the martial side of things. Maybe I'll rethink and come up with something with a little more muscle. I can always play Cajuna at a future time.

Regarding shape-shifting : the Power says I can take the form of one of the following creature types: Animal, Elemental, Humanoid, Plant, of size -4 to -1.

I went thru the SWD Core and Pathfinder Core bestiaries, and found the following :

Animals
Dog/Wolf(-1), Giant Spider(-1), Venomous Snake(-3), Bird of Prey(-2), House Cat(-3), Bird(-4), Mouse(-4)

Humanoids
Goblin(-1), Gnome(-1), Halfling(-1)

Elementals
Ignore additional damage from Called Shots, ignore 1 point of Wound penalties, don’t breathe or eat and are immune to disease and poison.
Air : Can maneuver through any non-solid surface, pass through cracks in doors or windows, bubble through water, etc. Can fly at Pace 12″.
Earth : Armor +4: Rocky hide. Burrow (10″): Earth elementals can meld into and out of the ground.
Fire : If a flammable target is hit by fire (GM’s call), roll 1d6. On a 6, the target catches fire and immediately takes 1d6 damage. Fire continues to cause damage at the beginning of the victim’s turns. Roll a d6 immediately after it does so. On a 6, it grows in intensity to whatever maximum the GM feels is appropriate (usually 3d6 for organic beings). On a 1, the fire drops a level, or burns out if reduced below 1d6 damage.

For the elementals, I ignored their damage (since in the Core they're size 1), and only listed their aspects that I thought might be useful.

I can't think of any plants that would be useful, unless there's some "monster" plants in one of the other bestiaries?

Any thoughts?

The Pathfinder Common Gear is much more detailed than the SWD - do we really need to specify bedrolls and blankets, and all the little things that *might* be useful in an adventure? When playing the "real" PF years ago, I came up with a list of every little thing that might come in handy (about some 20-odd things), I'll include it if you want to be true to PF dungeon crawls.

Would it be a good idea to start out with horses (87 GP)? Or can we buy them in almost any town if we decide we're going to be traveling a long way at some future point?

Any humans should buy an Everburning Torch to be able to see in dungeons and caves. 110 GP, but never burns out, well worth it.

If the *world* is truly PF, then if you can afford to make your primary weapon Cold Iron (2x the price), it's the cheapest protection against some non-animal "monsters" (demons and fey) that we might run into.

Maybe an Inquisitor. Never played one..

I'm planning on taking something fighter-like if that helps your decision on this. I say play what you want. :)

Oops. Not my day for clarity.

Interlude looks quite good.

At first glance I think you have under spent on Attributes by one.
What I see: Ag at d4 no points, Sm at d8 2 points, Sp at d8 1 point and human bonus, St at d4 no points, Vi at d6 for one. Total 4 of 5 points spent.
Skills/edges/hindrances look fine though.

Combining my replies to one post and

spoilering it for length.:

Class edges: Yes the Class edges naming thing is odd. I expect there were some lively discussions about this pack at PEG. Would using the names of the specific edges help? So for Sorcerer the edges are "Sorcerer", "Favored Powers (sorcerer)", "Arcane Mastery", and "Advanced Bloodline". I think it is important to think of these edges not as part of a "class"but rather as independent but related edges. Favored Powers and the others are best considered as the improved versions of Sorcerer in the same way the improved frenzy related to the frenzy edge.

You are correct AB Magic would not allow you to take Favored Powers (sorcerer), Arcane Mastery, or Advanced Bloodline as these edges have the Sorcerer edge as a prerequisite. Make sense?

Bloodlines and shapeshifting. This was an interesting question. You were asking specifically about your bloodline but any ruling would have to apply to all. So the question becomes "Do bloodline special abilities apply when Shapechanged?" I think the rules on the Shapechange power say yes. A druid shapechanged into a bear would still get their Frenzy or Levelheaded Edges so that means you get your Sorcerer Edge which includes your bloodline. You get your flight and the Abyssal Sorcerer bumps any claw damage their form has up a die type.
This brings us to part two of the answer. So while I was thinking about how bloodlines would interact with Shapesfift I did a thought experiment and ran through what sorcerers of different bloodlines would look like when shapeshifted in to a house cat given that the bloodline abilities are active. The Abyssal of Draconic claws were easy enough, thought Draconic scaly skin would make the cat look more like a lizard. The Abberant cat has reach. That is a weird looking cat. So I am proposing the game's first house rule.

"A sorcerers bloodline abilities are generally usable while shapechanged. The appearance of a shapechanged sorcerer will bear marks of their bloodline. This will render their new form as a bit unusual. A celestial cat will look different than an Infernal cat and an Abberant cat is nightmare fuel. If a sorcerer wishes to appear normal and unremarkable they can forgo the listed benifit for a raise on the spellcasting roll. Being unremarkable may limit their access to bloodline abilities and other edges."

I think that is all your questions. I'll review the character after your Interlude is posted.

This has all the contours for an amazing game. Unfortunately I won't be able to participate due to the costs associated to buying the PDFs, and the complexity and tone evidenced by ZenFox42's multiple questions and requests for rulings.

Nonetheless I wish you a great game - Burnt Offerings is amazing. Enjoy!

I am sorry to see you go. I especially regret not being able to find a way to get you the books that I could feel comfortable with. If I had the cash I would simply buy everybody the books and be done with it but that level of scratch is beyond me. Perhaps someday.

Until then I'll see you around the boards.
