Helgash |
I am assuming Duardlara is up ahead scouting, or... We're just standing there in the face of the giants?
Duardlara Frostborn |
Yes, Duardlara will be relaying her observations to the party - size of the room, entrances she can see, position and type of foe.
Looking at Helgash, "You're going to want to talk to them, aren't you?"
Helgash |
Helgash smiles and shakes his head, speaking in hushed tones - "No Lara, I have nothing to discuss with frost giants" - his is a grim visage - "They could be a source of information is all, but delaying our attack tactics may prove dangerous against such foes"
He then looks around at his companions - "They will hear my approach for a mile away. What do you suggest? Duardlara and Orgar first strikes, Jetro and Cynehelm pepper them as they chase? Greta, Orgar and myself meet them when they close. Something like this?"
Helgash |
I'm here, just waiting to hear if Duardlara agrees with the 'plan', and what hers and Orgar's actions will be.
Duardlara Frostborn |
Duardlara's plan would be to snipe from hiding, probably with another ranged attacker or two, and fall back. If possible, do it again. Draw them back to Helgash and other heavy hitters in a tunnel that's hopefully not terribly easy for them to move in. But yes, her preferred tactic would be go get the party started.
Helgash |
Draw them back to Greta and Orgar please - Helgash is now mainly healer/buffer, second line fighter :D
DM Variel |
Orgar 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (2) + 5 = 7
Cynehelm 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (18) + 1 = 19
Helgash 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (13) + 2 = 15
Jetro 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (10) + 6 = 16
Duardlara 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (15) + 8 = 23
Venja 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (12) + 5 = 17
frost giant 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (12) - 1 = 11
You guys will get the surprise round as well as the first round...
The hall way is 10ft wide leading into the room.
With a plan in place Orgar casts vanish on himself as Jetro and Duardlara sneak up and fire s single shot each. The rest wait back for them to draw the giants out.
Round 1 You guys
Duardlara Frostborn |
Duardlara nods at Orgar's plan. "Wait here, then." She gestures to a place on the wall where she and Jetro can identify so they don't run into the waiting gish warrior. "Greta, wait back a few steps - we want them to see you and to approach you, drawing them into Orgar's attack."
Whispering to Jetro, "Fire, then tactical retreat when they pursue. When Orgar and Greta engage - or if the giants don't pursue - let them have it."
She lines up a shot and lets loose as the archer does, then hiding and trying for another devastating attack.
Surprise round
Composite bow: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (8) + 9 = 17
Damage: 1d8 ⇒ 4 + Sneak Attack: 3d6 ⇒ (4, 6, 2) = 12
First round
Composite bow: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (14) + 9 = 23
Damage: 1d8 ⇒ 4 + Sneak Attack: 3d6 ⇒ (5, 3, 3) = 11
Stealth to snipe after first round shot: 1d20 + 24 - 20 ⇒ (15) + 24 - 20 = 19
Orgar |
Surprise Round
Under the affects of his Vanish spell, Orgar sneaks in behind one of the giants
stealth: 1d20 + 5 - 5 + 20 ⇒ (11) + 5 - 5 + 20 = 31
Just under full speed (-5) and bonus for Vanish (+20)
Plan is to lash out at the giant he's behind just as the giants pay attention to the others.
Cynehelm of Orlov |
Not sure where Orgar is, Cynehelm foregoes any area of effect spells, instead unleashing three admonishing rays
Admonishing Ray (ranged touch attack, nonlethal)(1st ray)[/i: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 74d6 + 4 ⇒ (3, 1, 5, 6) + 4 = 19
Admonishing Ray (ranged touch attack, nonlethal)(2nd ray)[/i: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (11) + 3 = 144d6 + 4 ⇒ (3, 1, 5, 5) + 4 = 18
Admonishing Ray (ranged touch attack, nonlethal)(3rd ray)[/i: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (9) + 3 = 124d6 + 4 ⇒ (4, 3, 4, 4) + 4 = 19
Helgash |
Helgash summons a divine blessing to bolster his companions.
Casting Bless.
DM Variel |
Jetro starts the party with a solid shot into the first frost giant. Durardlara tries to follow suit but her aim is slightly off. Behind them the group readies to encounter the behemoths in hand to hand combat.
Since the surprise wore off Jetro beat a quick retreat behind the ranks of Helgash, Greta, and Cynehelm. Cynehelm hpcast a spell target the same giant with 3 rays of negative energy. The first misses but the last two drain the giant’s vitality. Orgar casts vanish as he tries to move behind them. Helgash casts bless on th party. Duardlara takes a position to snipe as the arrow strikes true.
Perception 2d20 ⇒ (18, 13) = 31 +10 each
The giants spot Duardlara but fail to see the invisible Orgar coming up behind them.
The giants themselves stay put as they pull large rocks from sacks at their hips. Judging by the size of the sack sad the rocks pulled you think they have another 5 rocks to throw. Each of them take a different target as a goes after Duardlara and the other Cynehelm.
Cynehelm attack 1d20 + 9 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 9 + 1 = 12 for 1d8 + 13 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 13 + 1 = 20
Duardlara attack 1d20 + 9 + 1 ⇒ (11) + 9 + 1 = 21 for 1d8 + 13 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 13 + 1 = 18
Good guys up with the giants still by the doorway.
Orgar |
Surprise Round
Orgar springs into action by attacking the giant he's behind with all-out spell combat
(two mellee attacks, followed by a spell, all at -2 to hit):
Issar (+1 scimitar), first hit: 1d20 + 13 + 1 + 1 - 2 ⇒ (10) + 13 + 1 + 1 - 2 = 23
damage: 1d6 + 8 + 1 + 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 8 + 1 + (4) + 1 = 18
issar (+1 scimitar), second hit: 1d20 + 8 + 1 + 1 - 2 ⇒ (12) + 8 + 1 + 1 - 2 = 20
damage: 1d6 + 8 + 1d6 ⇒ (1) + 8 + (4) = 13
(bab +13/+8, +1 to hit and damage and flaming burst damage, bless)
« შოკისმომგვრელი » . . "shocking grasp", in draconic
cast defensively (dc 17): 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (1) + 12 = 13
shocking grasp: 1d20 + 13 - 2 ⇒ (2) + 13 - 2 = 13
damage: 5d6 ⇒ (6, 4, 3, 4, 5) = 22
(melee touch, +4 to hit foes with metal armour or weapons)
Helgash |
Variel, I promise I will not ask this again, but... Why not link the map at the top of the page, or under your name...?
Helgash's Life Link with Duardlara immediately heals her for some of the damage - Lara you heal 5. Helgash takes 5.
Orgar I thought we were supposed to hit them and retreat.
Invoking a protective spell, Helgash grants Iomedae's protection on Greta, anticipating the combat, and draws his bardiche, holding it in one hand.
Casting Shield Other on Greta.
Greta Silvermane |
Seeing Orgar already engaged with an enemy, Greta does not hesitate, and feeling the divine magin bolstering her strength, she wades in, flanking the giant creature - "Let's do this then!" - she roars
Greataxe, Vital Strike, Flank: 1d20 + 14 + 2 ⇒ (9) + 14 + 2 = 25
Damage if it hits: 2d12 + 16 ⇒ (8, 4) + 16 = 28
We are all focusing the same, right?
DM Variel |
Orgar swings with his trusty scimitar and lands a solid blow initially. He tries to follow up with another attack but just misses getting around the giants leathery hide. As he tries to summon his magic he catches sight of the giants massive axe and that causes him to incorrectly speak the necessary words as the spell fails.
Undeterred at the thrown boulder Jetro fires another pair of arrows with each of them striking true and bringing the giant to his knees.
Helgash casts a spell on Greta to protect her as he takes some of her damage. Emboldened by her lovers spell she charges forward with greataxe swinging and fells the one that has taken all of the damage.
The remaining giant roars in anger as he brings his greataxe around in a mighty swing trying to take Greta's head off in a single blow.
power attack 1d20 + 18 - 3 ⇒ (8) + 18 - 3 = 23 for 3d6 + 13 + 9 ⇒ (6, 1, 4) + 13 + 9 = 33
second attack 1d20 + 18 - 5 - 3 ⇒ (9) + 18 - 5 - 3 = 19 for 3d6 + 13 + 9 ⇒ (2, 4, 2) + 13 + 9 = 30
Good guys up plus if someone wants to bot Venja go ahead. Will look for a replacement next week.
Duardlara Frostborn |
I believe D'lara will regain 5 hp at Helgash's expense on her turn, is that correct? The elf steps back out of sight, per the original plan, but partially so she can lick her wounds for a moment.
And ready herself for a new sniping attack next round.
Orgar |
Round 1
Orgar takes a 5 ft step to attack the standing giant:
Issar (+1 scimitar), first hit: 1d20 + 13 + 1 ⇒ (13) + 13 + 1 = 27
damage: 1d6 + 8 + 1 + 1d6 ⇒ (2) + 8 + 1 + (6) = 17
(bab +13/+8, +1 to hit and damage and flaming burst damage)
issar (+1 scimitar), second hit: 1d20 + 8 + 1 ⇒ (16) + 8 + 1 = 25
issar (to confirm): 1d20 + 8 + 1 ⇒ (17) + 8 + 1 = 26
The keen property is definitely worth it for a scimitar!
damage: 2d6 + 16 + 2d6 + 1d10 ⇒ (5, 1) + 16 + (2, 6) + (10) = 40
@ DM Variel: This is actually the first time I've got a crit with a flaming burst weapon.
I think on a crit, it does 2d6+1d10 fire damage as part of that.
Cynehelm of Orlov |
Cynehelm steps forward and heals Greta
Burn wall of fire to spontaneously cast cure critical wounds.
Player's Note: The hard corner of the doorway should provide cover, negating any AoO by the giant.
Cure Critical Wounds on Greta: 4d8 + 8 ⇒ (2, 4, 6, 3) + 8 = 23
Duardlara Frostborn |
@ DM Variel: This is actually the first time I've got a crit with a flaming burst weapon.
I think on a crit, it does 2d6+1d10 fire damage as part of that.
Barring some other special property, only accounting for flaming burst, it should double the base damage (thus 2d6) and add a small fireball (the 1d10) and your standard damage bonuses, some of which are doubled. I don't know where the extra 2d6 is coming from in your damage roll - I believe it might be extraneous.
Orgar |
@ Duardlara: I calculated 2d6+16 for the scimitar's critical damage alone.
The other 2d6+1d10 was for the fire damage from the critical.
After reading up on Flaming Burst and Critical hits, I wasn't sure if the critical fire damage was an extra 1d6+1d10 or 2d6+1d10.
Which could just be me with a distinct lack of caffeine in my bloodstream (as usual).
Anyway, (the ever omnipotent) DM Variel has the final say, of course!
Duardlara Frostborn |
Of course. It’s his virtual table. The flaming property would provide 1d6 damage (only if activated) whether there is a critical hit or not - it is never multiplied. The flaming burst property (which includes the flaming property), provides 1d10 on a critical hit whether the flaming property is active or not. I was not including the damage from the flaming property because I didn’t assume it was active and didn’t go look.
There are few confusing rules I feel I have a good handle on - this is one, so I was just trying to provide some guidance. I’ll shut up about it now.
DM Variel |
Duardlara is right i this case as the extra d6 from flaming is not doubled on a crit. Typically extra dice are never multiplied like sneak attack. In this case the crit will do d6 +d10 Fire damage.
With a massive blow from Orgar followed by another blow and the addition of a shocking arrow the giant reels back in pain. Cynehelm takes the opportunity to heal Greta as Duardlara takes a sniping approach.
Helgash and Greta to go.
Greta Silvermane |
Greta takes the hit and snorts with a nod of thanks at Cynehelm, stepping inside the giant's defenses to attack again - "Is that all you've got?!"
5' to I:17 and full attack.
Greataxe 1: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (17) + 14 = 31
Damage if it hits: 1d12 + 16 ⇒ (9) + 16 = 25
Greataxe 2: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (15) + 6 = 21
Damage if it hits: 1d12 + 16 ⇒ (12) + 16 = 28
Actually Greta is only hit for 17 points of damage from the giant (due to Shield Other), so she is at full health from Cynehelm's heal ;)
Helgash |
I believe D'lara will regain 5 hp at Helgash's expense on her turn, is that correct?
That is correct ;)
Helgash takes 16 + 5 points of damage = 21
The paladin steps behind Cynehelm, and tries to hit the giant.
Bardiche: 1d20 + 11 - 4 - 4 ⇒ (19) + 11 - 4 - 4 = 22 Assuming -4 from Cynehelm and -4 from attacking around the corner?
Damage if it hits: 1d10 + 15 ⇒ (3) + 15 = 18
Orgar |
Round 2
Orgar finishes off the second giant with a coup de grace, using his scimitar, Issar (as usual):
damage: 2d6 + 16 + 1 + 1d6 + 1d10 ⇒ (4, 4) + 16 + 1 + (3) + (10) = 38
(auto crit damage and for the coup de grace flaming burst damage)
Helgash |
Well, apart from me, no one I think Cynehelm - there is nothing like preparation! ;)
"Well fought my friends" - Helgash congratulates his companions - "Lara, will you take a quick look at the door? In spite of the noise?" - then takes a brief moment to heal himself.
Cure Light Wounds: 1d8 + 5 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 5 + 2 = 9
Duardlara Frostborn |
Duardlara was still down 8 when the giant fell. I will leave it to our warrior healer as to the most efficient way to get us both to full.
Stowing her bow, the elf nods and moves to examine the door.
Perception vs. traps: 1d20 + 17 + 1 ⇒ (19) + 17 + 1 = 37
Disable Device vs. traps: 1d20 + 16 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 16 + 1 = 25 If she finds no trap, this would be applied to an attempt to unlock the door, if necessary, but without the extra +1.
Helgash |
Duardlara was still down 8 when the giant fell. I will leave it to our warrior healer as to the most efficient way to get us both to full.
Duardlara would heal a further 5 hp until MAX HP-3 ;)
And how banged up is Helgash?
HP are updated on header Cynehelm - 59/81.
