Patience! That and having an index card of basic stats in a comfortable standard format for each participant. Put them in initiative order - keeps you from forgetting anyone or looking too much up.

If you have set up time, have each PC have a standard written out action that you default to if they can't decide on an action in a set amount of time on their turn - keeps it moving, less chance of being bored. If you can, have the participants write out their actions so when, inevitably, something is missed, it is easy to go back, find the mistake, and come back without losing continuity.

I have used these techniques and it goes pretty smoothly.


Have every NPC act at the same time in initiative. Average their initiative out.

first to let you know the game went great. the party defiantly was challenged I had enemies attack in waves. and gave each player and additional NPC to run.

the combat is still on-going we left the game table set up for the next session as the second wave will begin the attack.

(BTW this game is high level, the average party level is 16)

so far of the attackers that got taken down:
a dark stalker mummy level 11 barbarian
a Half Celestial gnome fighter/Cavalier with war dog mount
A shadow lord dread gnome necromancer

Almost dead,
A Shade rogue/red mantis assassin.
and two characters that Magic probably knows: Lulu and Annie

I almost took out the party Drow noble antipaladin
and dropped another drow noble (I forgot what class)

the game turned into my favor when the red mantis assassin cast dominate person of the giant sized half orc brawler with massive strength (he failed the will save)

wording: the wording is fine IC but an OOC note to say something like ready action to cast burning hands, converted ....Once a skeleton is in range of the spell. This way I could have included it in the update.

also a familiar is always out and does not really provide any super combat capabilities.

an Ediolon is in fact the summoner's main weapon. it becomes more powerful as you level up, adding more evolutions as you go.

these are completely exclusive things. a single creature cannot be both an Ediolon and a familiar.

the Ediolon is summoned (which takes 1 full minute or 10 combat rounds to summon but once summoned it remains summoned until it is killed (neg con in HP) or you dismiss it, or you go to sleep (or go unconscious)

the summoning time is one of the key balancing factors with it.

you can summon it via the summon Ediolon spell which is a 1 round casting time, but it will remain summoned only for the duration of the spell.

Once the Ediolon is dismissed or killed it cannot be summoned again until the next day (or 8 hours rest).

I asked about making my familiar and the eidolon the same creature when we went gestalt because I thought it just fit better than Tatsuo for some reason having two dragon-type companions. I didn't hear anything against it, so I assumed it was ok. But I'm sorry, I should have looked for an explicit response from you. If they're separate creatures, then she would have been summoned a while ago. At least when we were back in the fountain room. Technically probably even before that if you retroactively apply gestalt.

Here is what my intent was:

As a tattooed sorcerer, my familiar can take tattoo form. She was in tattoo form before, and then took on physical form again, which is a move action. And it happened before Tatsuo entered the room and before I knew there was going to be combat (I just thought there was a good chance of combat happening). But maybe I'm just getting confused on how the timeline in PBPs work since things tend to get posted slightly out of order of when they actually happen in game.

Lets just work this all out....

I also am assuming sora was available well before going in.

Also i am not changing anything that already occured so you are fine there.

We can have sora be both, you will just have to use the ediolon rules.

You still gain the familiar benefits (which are nearly the same as ediolon benefits)

Sora will advance as an ediolon (better hp that way at least)

I dont remember sora's bonus as a famliar but you should get that as well.

The real problem may come in in sora is killed.

Ediolon rules: can summon again the next day at half health
Familiar rules: you need to get a new one at a cost.

Any suggestions there?


I actually meant to be on the walkway above still, going towards the skelly that was on it too.
It wasn't pink like the others so I thought it was on the walkway. :/

Since you have the benefits of both, you should the costs of both. (Finally, we have figured out a way to balance eidolons !)the eidolon. But now we have to figure out how to combine those two costs. It seems unreasonable to go to Tien every time to get a new one, so I would drop that requirement.

Hmm, that had not occurred to me since I always figured I'd have her retreat if she was getting low on HP. Especially since an eidolon's Life Link means that if it's about to get sent back to its home plane, Tatsuo can sacrifice HP to try to prevent that. We could just combine them, so I can summon her again a week later with 1/2 HP at a certain cost, maybe with an option of paying more to summon her the next day rather than a week later?

One thing I wasn't really sure about is that familiars normally get natural armor bonuses and increased intelligence as you level up, and I wasn't sure if I should add these to her stats. Eidolons also get AC bonuses (that can be either armor or natural armor bonuses), but no intelligence increase.

tat do not add them because in its place you are getting increased HD, better saves, increased BAB, and the ability to gain feats.

and summoners also have spells that are specific to boost the Ediolon.

(evolution surge is a favorite one for me)

like what Tat suggested, lets go with if Sora dies (like negative con score dead) you must wait a week and no payment or to get Sora the next day will require 100 gp per level (for the special ingredients)

Ghouled, as in "infected by a ghoul and turned into one". Too bad a ghoul's ravenous hunger for flesh supercedes nearly all forms of control.

I've had that problem before as well. I think it's slightly not as bad in PBP than face to face though because I can add in more descriptions and internal thoughts. I've also had the problem where I need to have a character do something ooc because otherwise the game would break down.


I do that sometimes.
It's not bad to be flexible. :)

I personally, have mo problem wit the "silent guy". There's different things you could do though. Avery primal shanman could mimic the behaviour of his animal companion, including monkey-like grins and beatings of one's chest.

Might represent very bad luck, like your foot slipping on the door. Or maybe these doors ARE a bit sturdier.

Some doors are just harder to break down than others. Presumably dungeons are built out of relatively sturdy materials.

the doors are crypt doors all were sealed shut. they are built to prevent someone just walking up and "kicking" them in.

and besides I say its a DC 20 strength check so that is what it is..

(finally i get to make things difficult instead of everything else making my life difficult)
