And a fine bodyguard that would be :D

OK we will say you three at least came in by boat from Whiterush. Let me get some info up about what that place was like.

Whiterush:

Whiterush is a small but busy river town. Its economy centers on trade, and it services both the river traffic and the merchant trail that runs beside the river. The town center is large enough to support two inns, a variety of small service businesses, and a few apartments. Whiterush’s town center is comprised of two economic zones: the docks and “everything else.”

The docks, running from Little Dock to Ordok’s General Store, bustle with activity. Along the boardwalk, sweaty guildsmen unload crates of baleen oil brought from sea ports down river and pile barges high with local dark oak lumber, for sale in distant markets. River captains line up at Canton’s Cooperage to repair their barrels or barter for new ones. At the Waterside Inn travelers mix with drunken bargemen and merchants.

Beyond the docks, Whiterush shows signs of Lord Greaves neglect. A faded signpost at each crossroads directs visitors to stores and sites of interest. The town’s streets lack a cobblestone or two. The public greenery in Whiterush grows unkempt, and bits of trash and offal accumulate between buildings.

Sounds good to me. Battery is about to die, so I'm just hopping in quicklike to say yay friends! and yay one of them being a bodyguard!

Any chance Raziel could have obtained any additional information regarding Zelkor's Ferry when in Whiterush? Perhaps something not on the campaign info tab? :D

Knowledge (Local?): 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (17) + 8 = 25

We already did a round of that did you not participate? There will be another round once everyone herds over to gameplay, this time represented by diplomacy to gather info rather the knowledge local checks

Hound doesn't do diplomacy beyond some grunting.

Raziel:
Lord Greaves’ father, Breldus, was a formidable knight of the realm and was granted tracts of land for service to the Crown. The old knight insisted on a strict military regimen for young Lord Greaves in his youth, but when his father passed away and left Breldin the Whiterush Valley, the new lord spent the next few decades whittling down the family fortune pursuing his favorite pastime—gambling. Breldin took to wine, women, and sausages, swiftly aging into his current gouty, well-pickled incarnation.

I applied your knowledge check to Whiterush.

I had a feeling ;)

Are you coming in by boat though, or up to the gate from the merchant trail? I meant for that caotain to be addressing the others coming by land.

Merchant trail sounds good

Ok cool, now the gameplay thread will make sense :)

I'll be coming in by boat, should I just walk up to the gate?

Check out the environs map to see how its laid out, and then pretty much yeah but I want to describe everyone and everything you see so let's take the posting light into everyone checks in.

male Human Paladin 2 Level 2 Human Paladin Init +2 Perception -1 AC 18 (T 12 FF 16) HP 22 CMB +6 CMD 18 BAB+2 WIL +5 REF +5 FORT +8

I think I'll arrive by fary as well. A shared fary ride should be good for getting to talk to other people and thus form a common basis for an adventuring group!

Ok, maybe you are on a boat with Raziel.

It would be a Keelboat, those are the ones that travel the river. The Ferry is just for travellers on the merchant trail to cross this branch of the river and continue east by land to the coast road.

BTW, everyone starts with 2 actions points, enough to cheat death once. New action point at level up, max 3 in the bank.

If you need to look them up they are actually called Hero Points in APG.

Spend one to re-roll, add +8 to next roll, add +4 to last roll, take extra action, or act out of turn.

Spend two to cheat death, you end up at zero hp, unconscious but stable.

Max 3 in the bank, I suggest you keep two whenever possible. Gain one when you level, sometimes for epic heroic-ness.

I have to say I can understand the logic behind long winded and detailed recruitments in the Paizo boards - it probably increases the chances of finding someone who has adequate posting habits for the game in question, to understand if the writing style is compatible with what the GM is looking for, or even to ascertain how commited one may be to the game itself but...

I honestly prefer a more organic method, with the characters developing as they move along and interact with one another and the environment - I mean, of course I have a basic idea as to why Raziel is in Zelkor's Ferry, but even simply arriving there, looking at the maps, heck even the place where the ferry came from already got my mind travelling in many other directions - I think that, no matter how far ahead your character is fleshed out, its true development only comes through play, and that is a third of the fun of it all, the other two thirds are killing bad guys and getting their treasure :D

Just some random ranting there.

I like that too, very much. I don't ask for any minimum backstory. That said, the other group I'm running came up with lots of connections and it's made for some good times, so I thought I would just leave the possibility there, for you guys to develop if that's your style!

Back in the day, I used to actually press my regular group for well developed and consistent backstories for their characters, but after a couple hundred game hours we started laxing some, and letting things fall where they may - especially after they arrived in Sigil - the setting was so immensely daunting and absorbing that we just went with the flow.

It worked great - friendships developed, lifelong enemies shared, amazing plans were laid out together - that's the gist of the game as far as I'm concerned.

I agree wholeheartedly. I have one player at home who never names his characters until like third level ;)

Haha, that's cool - never thought about that possibility :D

I won't be getting much posting in today, but this thread seems to be moving fast so if I don't reply in a timely manner don't wait up, I'll even let you rp for Q. If you're wondering what to have him say just ask yourself "what would Ron Swanson say?".

lol, I love Ron Swanson.

As for pace, I'm shooting to let you guys dictate it, but let me know if you want me to hit the gas or the brakes on my end, and I will.

WWRSS?

Alrik, if you see this, check in with us, I was thinking it wouldn't be so bad if they go explore a bit without you until you can join up.

male Human Paladin 2 Level 2 Human Paladin Init +2 Perception -1 AC 18 (T 12 FF 16) HP 22 CMB +6 CMD 18 BAB+2 WIL +5 REF +5 FORT +8

I'm here. Just been working all weekend. I'm currently reading the 60+ psts in the game forum!

Everyone receives 200 ad hoc XP for the RP so far. Please track your own XP. We are using the medium track.

A couple of you had brought up the possibility of using Roll20 for combats. I'm keen on the idea, but let's gauge the health of the game before looking at anything like VTT.

I want people who post from work to be able to participate without really having to leave the site or give the game all their attention for more then a few moments at a time.

Thoughts?

male Human Paladin 2 Level 2 Human Paladin Init +2 Perception -1 AC 18 (T 12 FF 16) HP 22 CMB +6 CMD 18 BAB+2 WIL +5 REF +5 FORT +8

Roll20 runs in realtime? If so that's a nonno for me as I'm in central Europe and can't post while sleeping (which I do for about 7 hours a day...)

I think roll20 is at least capable of running in real time, as I believe people use it for VTT games typically, not PbP, but maybe it doesn't have to. If the suggestion was just that I simply use it as a mapping solution, I will take a look, but I have good pdf's already for the dungeon, and for impromptu encounters I'm handy enough with gimp to throw things together on the spot usually.

Ridley, yous till here?

Well, weekends are always slow, right? Ridley post sat night.

I could roll a couple of passive checks for her but there's nothing to be gained by that really.

I think we will hear from Ridley soon.

Couple things before you guys declare actions in gameplay:

1.You want me to roll initiative for everyone? That's what my other group likes.

2.How many blocks you want the baddies split into for init?

I'm thinking young pages, everyone else.

But I could do: young pages/renard and aldo and krull/creepy cult guys.

3.I never got around to telling you my sreamlined AoO idea for PbP, so we will do it normal for now I guess.

male Human Paladin 2 Level 2 Human Paladin Init +2 Perception -1 AC 18 (T 12 FF 16) HP 22 CMB +6 CMD 18 BAB+2 WIL +5 REF +5 FORT +8

The fastest way is us -them. Also I'm going to bed soon NPC Alrik if needed to push combat onward. Genral guide to his tactics:

Get into the thick of things to provoke as many AoO as possibly focus on Renard and power attack. As soon as I take a hit use Lay on hands to heal up.

M Human Male Human Barbarian 7 |HP97/97 (109/109 when raging) | Bust 40B|AC:18(17) | T:12(11) | FF:18(17) | CMD:20 | Fort:+10 | Ref:+5/7 | Will:+5 | Init:+2 | Per:+12 | Acrobatics:+9 | Climb:+10 | Stealth:+6 | Ride:+9]

Having you roll Init and also perhaps Perception can speed things up.

k. If they go all on one count, what should I use? Their highest result? Lowest?

I'll let you all roll your own init this time since we already started that way, and being the first encounter, it will be a good roll call/head count to make sure everyone's up to speed.

After this I'll roll all passive.

Init Q: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6

If you can think of it guys, preface your post on your turn with a bolded "Round X Initiative Y" header.

I'm pretty new to PbP it helps me track the action without getting confused.

I'm still around, just got a little caught up in something. Sorry about that.

Future of GM rolling initiative sounds good to me, speeds things up quite a bit in my experience. Perception and saves are good ideas too.

I'm one that voiced a vote for roll20. I'll get my thoughts down on that subject tonight, as I only have time to get one post in and that might take a bit to explain.

I'm going to go ahead and post Ridley's action here, as I caught the part where she left to check on Ysbel (which is completely in character). After finding Ysbel and telling the girl to keep her head down, if at all possible (climbing through windows if need be) Ridley's going to try and get out of the building and come at the group of pompous twits from behind. I'll throw up here a couple climb checks and stealth checks as a just incase, with two of each incase she needs to make more than one roll on her way.

Climb
1d20 + 5 ⇒ (20) + 5 = 25
1d20 + 5 ⇒ (19) + 5 = 24

Stealth
1d20 + 13 ⇒ (5) + 13 = 18
1d20 + 13 ⇒ (15) + 13 = 28

If relevant for later in the combat...
Initiative
1d20 + 8 ⇒ (4) + 8 = 12

OK you can jump in here any time you want if you have time to post as well.

I'll only bot you if they are in trouble, I don't like doing that when I can help it, it feels weird.

Thanks a lot for checking in!

PS I'm glad the stuff I had Ridley do was in character.

Question is, should I go ahead and post or is she spending her first action checking on the girl? Either is perfectly fine with me.

Looking for the girl was in the freestyle time before initiative count, you can jump right in. Start at A1, either coming up from the basement or down from the rooms.

Or the climb down from the windows thing, sorry I missed that before.

Ok, finnally I am in front of my PC (long day today):

- DM Grimmy, any idea how far Raziel is from getting around the inn, and back in from the other side?

- Roll20: I was under the impression this was simply for mapping options, but clearly things are fine as they are - I really enjoy those crude looking maps, like the one for the Environs of Zelkor's Ferry (for example, I really like this map style- done with photoshop I believe);

- Initiative: Yep, I think DM Grimmy should roll it;

- Enemy initiative blocks: I think as long as it doesn't slow things up too much, as detailed as possible is good - amassing them on a single initiative count can mess things up, though in another game I am in, our GM has a method based on averaging initiative or something like that, that works quite well - truth be told, no one is really based off high initiative :D

- You can still tell us about your streamlined AoO rules :D

It's a move action away, the number squares 1,2,3 are a little garden, 4 is a little kitchen behind a bar, and that little doodle is a door back in to the bar landing at A4.

Hmm, we need an action from Q to unlock the Company of Crying Maids and Ogrim then bavck to the top of the inititave with Raziel.

WWRSD?

I think my AoO idea is pretty sweet but you guys will know better, I haven't done much PbP til now.

We talk about that after this fight though, think it's running pretty smooth, don't want to switch it up now.

Ok, I'll admit it - What are the WW references? :D

Take your time man!
