Background:
Quetzal was born to a matriarchal tribe and was delivered by his future fiancé who, despite them being fifteen years apart, chose him due to the unusualness of his birth. When he was born, he had large avian eyes and hair as fine as down feathers. He was believed to be a gift from Freya, bird goddess of the harvest and fertility, and was treated as a good omen.
His unusual heritage afforded him many luxuries that most males in their tribe did not receive, and indulged in full. Though often he would wander off by himself to hunt, fish, and work on his archery, he never had to want for anything. When not doing these things he was often under the thumb of his fiancé, who was more like a bratty older sister than someone he could find himself loving romantically. She would often force him into going to events and gatherings held by the tribe, even though he would rather be left alone. She was controlling, manipulative, and ultimately bad for him. To make matters worst, his peers encouraged him to acquiesce to her despite his unhappiness. A common saying among his tribe was "most fall in love to get married, but we get married to fall in love". It was a way of saying that they eventually learned to fool themselves into loving these people who they were arranged to marry.
He also began to feel awful, because many in his tribe were considered second class citizens, unlike those who called themselves the first families and traced their lineage back to the goddess herself. When he realized that he was no different from them, that he had acclimated himself to his status and was just as guilty as the others who looked down upon those whose labor they relied on to live, Quetzal rebelled. He renounced his status as a member of the first families, rejected his wife to be and declared himself an individual first and a member of the families second. Not liking his attitude, he became a pariah among those who were once his friends and realized there was no place for him in his own homeland. He chose to leave then with nothing but his bow and what he could carry on his back.
Not equipped to survive on his own, he found himself poor and destitute, but he did not despair. He felt that by immersing himself in nature, he would gain a more objective understanding of society through personal introspection, as well as gain a better understanding of himself. To him, society and institutions ultimately corrupted the individual, and he felt that people could be redeemed if they became self-reliant. With that thought, he set out to put his philosophy into practice to show that one could be just, independent, and still be a part of a community without taking unfair advantage of others.
Through quiet contemplation, refining his body, and purifying his mind, he has set an ascetic path for himself, one that he hopes will ultimately make him a great man, one who's worth is determined by all but his celestial heritage.
