From now on, when a language doesn't have a word for elf, the word is "soup"
Thanks Nerk, I laughed so loudly at this everyone in my lab now thinks I'm insane.

Cueta Guiding Star |

Life is very busy atm, probably won't be able to post until tomorrow. Please bot if needed.

Cueta Guiding Star |

We're too slow to chase all of them down. At this point a prisoner would be valuable, but I have the feeling the elves may try to rescue them...
Well, Vallen's too slow ;)
I assume that there's other elves around attacking other Newspringers. They may just want to kill us. However, this wasn't a straight up attack, but rather an ambush, so perhaps they're looking to drag some of us off?
We may need many prisoners, in case we have to do an exchange. Another reason to try and figure out where that ship is - at the very least we can try and see if they running off with some of our people, though I guess we'll know soon enough either way...

Vallen Silverclasp |

True! Vallen's short dwarf legs are not helping matters.
Your intuition that they are looking to drag some of us off is probably correct-these are elves, they want information before they decide to attempt actually wiping us out.
Prisoners it is!

Vallen Silverclasp |

Some Comprehend Langauges from Vallen or smooth linguistics from Sorala and we start attempting to piece together what the elves want with us (probably to kill us cause we're trespassing). In time we might be able to squeeze some cultural knowledge from them or knowledge about the land itself.

Cueta Guiding Star |

If we get two, we can keep one and send one back with a message. Something along the lines of, 'stay out.'
I'd like to know information about them mostly. How many there are, where there are, do they travel mostly by sea, how many warriors do they have, how many ships? What they consider to be their land, and why they've attacked us at least twice now (as Vallen says, probably 'cause we're trespassing)?
If we can get three of them, we can isolate them each and compare answers, play good cop / bad cop, and get them talking against each other.

Cueta Guiding Star |

I agree. We don't need to keep them in Newspring, or give them any information. They can be blindfolded and isolated from each other nearby. If they are anything like our elves, they will take what happens to their people very seriously.
They already know where we are, and probably have other information from the two attacks they've staged, plus the necromancy of the Harpy's people. What they know, I don't know, but we should find out.

Vallen Silverclasp |

Welcome back Nerk! Hope it settles down soon.
We're a patient bunch, and your posts are worth waiting for, so no worries.

Kal'Tos |

I appreciate your patience, guys. Things are a little nutty these days, and my posting speed is decidedly subadequate. Life trumps gaming, though, so all I can offer is an apology.
As long as this doesn't die.
I would be fine with calling the combat over if that would make it easier for you.

Cueta Guiding Star |

No worries, Nerk! Hope everything settles down for you in a positive way.
As of tomorrow, I will be travelling until Thursday for work, and my time is going to be at a premium, so please bot Cueta/Sorala as needed.

Vallen Silverclasp |

You have the best prisoner capture scenes, Nerk. They always make me stop and think about what we're doing.

Cueta Guiding Star |

Happy holidays, everyone!

Vallen Silverclasp |

Happy Holidays!
I just had all four of my wisdom teeth removed, best Christmas ever!

Cueta Guiding Star |

Ugh. I suppose there won't be any Christmas goose (or whatever you celebrate with) for you, but perhaps you'll get some nice painkillers? I did when mine were taken out. Hope you feel better soon, Vallen!

Vallen Silverclasp |

My drugs are just okay unfortunately...

Vallen Silverclasp |

Skimmed it, glad to see people trying different variations. Shouldn't be picking up another game right now though.
I STILL hate the "humans get plus to this stat thing and a free feat no drawbacks" bologna.

Vallen Silverclasp |

That makes me happy. One thing at a time, making a game is hard.
Who knows? Nerk will most likely return one day, or stop by and tell us not to worry about it. When I check my posts in my other game this one is right next to it, so if he comes back it will be noticed.

Cueta Guiding Star |

I'm hoping Nerk gets solved what he needs to get solved and is back with us soon. Regardless, if he comes back, whenever that is, I'm up for this game.
As for the Five Moons Game, I took a look at the rules and I think they're approaching a revision of PF that makes a lot of sense, and incorporates some changes (skills and spells) that I'm really happy to see. I also really like the doing away with ability score modifiers and simply making those the ability scores. 5E has got me thinking a lot about the streamlining of PF, which in many ways is what 5E seems to be, to me anyways. I think the Five Moons people are onto something pretty cool and look forward to seeing more of it. I'm not so much interested in just playtesting combats, though, so I'll bow out of that, but I am interested to see what you find works and what doesn't!
I also recently picked up the A Song of Ice and Fire/Chronicle System RPG, and I'm finding it pretty impressive. Low (or no) magic, rules for the creation of houses (basically their take on Kingmaker), and rules for social interactions that focus kind of like combat, where if an NPC wins, they can cause your character to react as they would like. I'm not 100% sold on the idea of taking that type of choice out of the hands of the PCs, but it is a pretty interesting take on the social aspect of RPGs. Otherwise, there's a lot of similarities to PF in concept and in some execution, and all in all, I'm digging the rule set a lot - I'd recommend checking it out if anyone has some extra money/time.

2 people marked this as a favorite. |

I sent Nerk a PM in the New Year, but never heard anything back. Hope that everything is OK with him, and that he and his are in good health.
I may - may being the operative word - be willing to pick this game up or start up a similar game in May if Nerk doesn't show up (which I think is a pretty good possibility at this point). Until then I'm too busy to consider it. I've got a GMing style similar to Nerk's, though I won't claim to be as good as he is.
If you all would be on board, since I wouldn't be a player, I'd have to follow tradition and kill Cueta off in a really gruesome manner, which would be fun too.
Hope everyone is well!

Vallen Silverclasp |

Hahaha I'd hate to see Cueta go but tradition must be followed.
I haven't heard anything from Nerk, and if Cueta hasn't heard anything from a PM- who knows.
I don't know if I'll be done with my thesis by May, but I SHOULD be done by June. I would really like to join your game though, Cueta. (Istiel retuuuuurns. Possibly as a ninja. I've also been kicking around the idea of a wizard. ...wizard ninja?)

I think a ninja sorcerer would mesh better together. Cha based spontaneous casting would do awesome things with a ninja.

Vallen Silverclasp |

Of course Ninja-Sorcerer! How foolish of me to think wizard.

She's probably got it coming - she's made enough enemies at this point ;)

No worries on that point. I'm way too busy at work right now to be able to take on a game of this magnitude. But, my two grants, five presentations, silent auction, and fundraising dinner will all be over by then.
Ugh.
On the plus side, I'm also going to Portugal in May, so it would be at best late-May when I'd be in a position to run this or something else, which lines up nicely with your timeline, Vallen.
Also, I borrowed a lot of Istiel's vague racism and haughtiness for another character in a game I'm in - it is a lot of fun, I must say.

I would like to see this. I don't know how you reconcile the loss of caster levels though.

Personally I would focus on self buffs and other spells that didn't rely on DCs. things that make a ninja magically better at what they do.

Vallen Silverclasp |

Sounds good Cueta. Keep me updated!
Istiel's personality just came out of nowhere for me, and was surprisingly fun. She definitely hasn't run her course yet...
I might actually look and see if anyone has done the ninja/sorcerer thing before.

Kal'Tos |

Also depending on how Cueta feels about it I helped write a multi-class archetype called the Illusion Walker that is a ninj/ sorcerer hybrid that can cast up to 6th level illusion spells.

That's a pretty nice archtype, Kal'Tos. Well within an acceptable power range, flavorful, and good for use right from the start, unlike the mage/thief PRC that's name escapes me. It is a role that Paizo still hasn't done justice to, in my opinion.
DM Nerk has left big shoes to fill.
Agreed, and that's the one thing that would make me hesitant to take over this game. On the other hand, I've enjoyed gaming with everyone, and this is the game that I've always wanted to play. Since there probably won't be another game like this one to come along, I may as well GM it.
I have ideas for a few different meta-plots that you all could take and run with (or not, as is the wont of sandboxes).
If I took over this game one thing I'd like to do is simplify things a bit, and have periods of downtime where nothing happens but life goes on in Newspring, allowing for the town to develop at a little quicker RL pace. Basically, I'd say something like, nothing much is going to happen for the next week, you all can make rolls for crafting, food gathering, capital, etc. as you see fit. Then advance the timeline, and pick the story back up. Going at a day every two to three RL days, we'll probably never make it to founding a kingdom. It took us 7 RL months to get 1 month in game done.
I'd like to simplify the food gathering as well. Perhaps everyone takes 10, with a team automatically forming when say 5 foragers form? Then there are penalties to rolls applied on top of the "take 10" result to get the day's haul?
I second your hope DM Nerk is okay. Vanishing like this for so long makes me worry this is a health issue, as opposed to simply a network outage.
Yep. I'm hoping its just GM burnout coupled with a busy (but happy) life. Often when someone just drops contact with these games and no notice, that's the best thing I can think of.

The Multi-class archetype people are awesome. I was working with them for a while on stuff but got burned out on the idea. Their main group has been doing at least a couple MCAs every month for years and are one their 9th 1000+ post thread.
As for the campaign, I think we might be better to start over, it will be easier to find people and as much as love Newspring, there is a lot of baggage for new people to work through. And that way if Nerk ever returns we can start this up again.

Vallen Silverclasp |

Not that I know of... Hopefully Nerk returns one day, but I'm not holding my breath.
