Background:

Youth and Education:

Vallen was the 5th and final child born to Odo and Zuthri Silverclasp, prominent metal traders of the mercantile Silverclasp clan. It had been decided Vallen would be sent to the Forge of Torag to join the clergy long before Vallen was born- indeed, the youngest child had been planned to be a connection to the church all along. He only spent 12 years at the family estate with his generous if aloof parents on the Great Goldpan River; as soon as he could properly walk and talk he was sent off, up the mountain to the great fortress city of Highhelm.

All that was expected of the young dwarf was to take up an apprenticeship and become an anointed cleric of Torag. To everyone's surprise, he turned out to be much more. His skill with stone was unheard of in one so young, and Vallen was carving complete, if crude, (by dwarven standards anyway) statues before he was 20 years old. Vallen was quickly recognized for his ability to plan and calculate as well as sculpt stone. He was rigorously schooled in architecture, stonemasonary, and engineering instead of the typical smithing routine of a Torag priest. Both his mentors and family hoped he would one day become a builder of great public works, bringing honor to the family and church.

Vallen proved to be a devout worshiper of Torag and easily took to the faith. His rapidly accumulating divine powers shocked his mentors, and they whispered that his skill with stone may also be a blessing from Torag himself. In truth, Vallen's own devotion to Torag and the dwarven pantheon is the source of his hard labors, as he desperately seeks to please the forge-father with his works of stone instead of the traditional works of metal. The Sky Citadel of Highhelm and the constant stories and paintings of the Sky Citadel Koldukar, forever in the hands of the orcs, planted a fanatical dream in the young priest. One day he would construct a grand city, as grand as Koldukar, and dedicate it to Torag.

The dwarf happily spent 35 years studying at the temple, rarely if ever venturing outside of its comfortable, beautiful walls. Family visits were just as rare, and the church was much closer to him. Graduation from the church at his age was a rarity, and the Silverclasp family were eager to put their prodigy work. During the celebration feast at the family's estate, Vallen's mother Zuthri announced plans to expand their already thriving business. A new continent had been discovered and the Silverclasp clan were going to be one of the first to create a trading outpost on this unspoiled land, followed by the creation of a new mountain home. Vallen was selected to be the chief architect and engineer of expedition, an honor he was deeply touched by. After so many years, he was part of his blood family.

The New World:

A force of 30 dwarves left Absalom, with the intent of setting up a trading post in the new landing city before marching off to found a new mountain home. Veteran farmers, soldiers, craftsmen, laborers- a good start to what would be reinforced in the following years. All present were part of the extended Silverclasp clan, with two immediate Silverclasp family members serving as leaders.

Azak Silverclasp, the 1st born son of the family, was to command a group of skilled fighters and the expedition in a military hierarchy. Jarla Silverclasp, the 1st born daughter, had been groomed since birth to one day take over the family business, and she was to direct the establishment of profitable commerce. With the exception of the soldiers, two Silverclasp were placed on as many ships as possible to facilitate goodwill and trade agreements with the future settlers. Vallen and Jarla were placed on the The Laughing Lillend to showcase fine Highhelm steel to potential buyers. Later on, Vallen would be amazed it was an act of business, not divine intervention, that left him and his sister the only surviving Silverclasps.

When the storm hit, Vallen prayed with all of his might every day for Torag to do something, anything, to stop the tempest. There was no answer- and why would there be? Torag's domain was far, far below the waves. As the calm settled on them, the realization of each lost ship caused Vallen's stomach to clench tighter. He had just joined his family, and had to witness them meet an ignoble end, unfitting for a dwarf. The priest performed what passing rites were allowed aboard the ship- there would be no funeral pyres aboard.

Yet, those deaths had not prepared Vallen for the Kraken. A terrifying, unholy beast of the waves- all he could do was stare with mortified horror. He watched as Azak and his company of dwarven soldiers attempted to fight the beast from aboard the Golden Pegasus, watched as the warship's hull broke and everyone was tossed into the foaming, bloodied sea. Vallen locked himself away for some time, desperately praying for the souls of the dwarves lost in the storm and battle. Would their souls be able to find their way to Torag's forge from the depths of the ocean? Would they be turned away, mistaken for monsters covered in seaweed? The question haunted him, and he was only snapped out of the stupor by a sharp lecture from Jarla when land was sighted. They were to go through with the plan. The Silverclasp were going to send reinforcements anyway, and for now, Jarla was technically in charge of their two person expedition.

Given work and a purpose, his shaken demeanor improved despite still being in mourning. As Vallen carried the the chest of steel ingots to the landing site, he whispered a prayer to Torag. "Forge Father, may your fires banish the shadows of doubt in my mind, and may your steel protect us from what lies ahead. Your child is ready to shape this earth in your image. Please watch over us and guide us."

He spent a year in "The New World", the land where the failed expedition was forced to call home. The last ship to survive the kraken attack, The Laughing Lillend, left to limp home and find help. The survivors struggled in their ramshackle collection of dwellings called "Newspring", named after the swell of life-giving fresh water so close to their landing beach. If not for the bravery, resourcefulness, and strength of a few heroes all those present would have perished to the wild, hungry forces that swirled about them.

Vallen proved to be one of those heroes- his resourcefulness and skills forged weapons to protect the innocent, built houses to shield them from the elements, and planned irrigation to feed their budding farms and desperate, rumbling stomachs. He negotiated with Hobgoblins, explored ancient sea Dwarf Fortresses (an offshoot that went horribly off track in The Quest for Sky), and faced the terrifying shark-teethed Kuru.

When the tall-masted ships arrived in the bay of Newspring, everyone thought it was some new horror to assault them. But somehow, against all odds, The Laughing Lillend made it back to Absalom and told the expedition investors of their fate. A new wave of people arrived to seek glory on the unspoiled land, but one ship was there to collect the shattered remnants of family. Manned by the crusty, drunken, and foul-mouthed Salt Beards, the Silverclasp family hired the finest Dwarf sailors to pilot an iron-plated brigantine across the ocean to retrieve their first born daughter and blessed son. With only a single backward look at Newspring, and all the good he accomplished, Vallen gladly boarded the ship and returned to civilization.

Present day:

Vallen spent some time recovering at the Silverclasp estate, drafting lofty public works, tinkering, sculpting a bust of Azak in marble, and generally being babied by his parents. Since the loss of their eldest (and favorite) son, the once aloof power couple became less focused on their business and instead prioritized their children to an annoying extent. Jarla was the first to crack. No longer able to stand the doting, she left the Great Goldpan River area find her own way in the business world.

Vallen lingered longer, but upon finishing the bust of Azak the priest was sent a message from Torag. As the priest was moving the bust to its final resting pedestal in his parent's master bedroom, he bumped into an adjacent bookshelf. A single slab sheet of parchment slipped from between the heavy tomes with a puff of dust, and floated to the smoothed jet stone floors. Ever the tidy one, Vallen reached down to pick up the parchment and was suddenly faced with a long forgotten memory. A crude and smudged charcoal drawing from his youth met his eyes; a massive above ground city, made completely of dressed stone. The vision overtook him- the city's towering walls were built with the finest white limestone, towers gleaming in the light of the moon. Red sandstone made a path through the beautifully cobbled streets to a castle of multi-colored granite, baring stones from all over Golarian in an abstract mosaic of unrivaled beauty. Excitement filled the priest for the first time in a year. He carefully slid the parchment back between two books on gauging the value of gemstone cuts, and without looking back at the bust of Azak he had carved, left the room.

Soon he was on his way to Highhelm, once again taking his place among brothers and sisters of the faith. Despite his protests (which were dismissed as modesty) he was hailed a minor hero after the stories of his faithful daily ministering of Torag's teachings to the five dwarf survivors in the New World expedition. With great reluctance he accepted the offer that a silver Ring of Torag be forged in his honor, detailing the story and accomplishment.

Five years have passed since the death of Vallen's brother Azak, and four more since Vallen's rescue. In the three years at Highhelm he served as a resource of architecture, craftsdwarfship, and faith. He earned his silver Holy symbol, moving up in the ranks of priesthood. Yet the keen-minded engineer studied many things other than architecture, including getting involved in the production of an early non-magical wonder called firearms. Through diligence and divine blessing he helped design new loading and firing mechanisms, and became an excellent shot in the process of testing equipment. With these new marvels in his hands Vallen feels one day the Kraken that still haunts his dreams will die under a hail of lead and black powder.

When word reached him the country of Brevy was annexing the River Kingdoms after clearing out its resident scum and villainy, the image of his grand dream-city flashed before his eyes once more. It may have been divine providence, then, that High King Borogrim the Hale lent his support behind Brevy and commanded the Forge of Torag to send one of their brightest Iron Priests to assist in the settlement of these new lands. Vallen found himself selected, and without any complaining, began to prepare for the journey.

The Silver Mason:

Appearance:

Vallen Silverclasp stands at a relatively tall 4'3 and a stout 210 pounds. He observes the vast wonders of Torag's creations through icy blue eyes; dark blond hair, neck-length and swept back behind his ears, frames the ruddy, light skin of his face. The youthful dwarf is merely 51 winters, but the forge-father has blessed him with a thick beard. A powerful, cheek-obscuring mustache flares out from his broad nose, curves downward, and weaves into the two main braids of his muddy golden beard, held in place by heirloom sterling silver beard clasps. His robust chest-length beard is in two tight double-woven braids, each capped by a brass ceremonial ring of Torag. Not a hair is out of place on the dwarf's exterior, and he goes out of his way to keep both skin and clothes clean and free of dirt. Even his hands, which are calloused from many years at the chisel, are scrubbed spotless after each day's work.

The light gray robes of Torag swath his body, with the sleeves tied at the wrists and a slit down the front to allow freedom of movement. On top of this is worn a ceremonial yet plain brown leather apron. Over the apron is draped a holy symbol of Torag- a fist-sized, heavily engraved hammer of polished silver, marking Vallen as a low-middle ranking priest in the church hierarchy. Thick leather boots match the apron, and similar to everything else he's wearing, they appear to be new. Always resting at Vallen's right hip is the iron-bound, leather-paged, and fire-resistant holy tome of Torag Hammer and Tongs: The Forging of Metal and Other Good Works.

The other hip balances a leather holster, slung around his waist, showing only the top of a beautifully polished darkwood handle with a silver butt. The perfectly lathed darkwood stock makes up the bulk of the gun, with a wide-set trigger guard (for thick dwarf fingers) hiding the steel trigger beneath. The carefully machined, shining steel firing mechanism is set in the center mass of the pistol, and represents an incredible accomplishment of sculpting. A carefully acid-etched image of Torag's forge-hammer Kaglemros houses a piece of flint held in place by a screw, making up the literal hammer mechanism. Below, an image of Torag himself (oriented horizontally when the pistol is held level) wraps his hand around the shaft of the hammer while his other hand cups into and makes up the powder pan. Above this sets a steel frizzen, discolored and worn from multiple firings. Torag's legs and blacksmith apron are cleverly incorporated into the frizzen spring, making a full-body portrait of the stout Dwarven god when the gun is held perpendicular to the ground. The well-oiled dark grey metal of the barrel stands as a highly functional contrast to the rest of the piece. This exquisite black powder pistol is both a work of art and a deadly weapon.

Rings of Torag:
Created or bestowed upon by worshipers of Torag to commemorate great events or accomplishments. Vallen owns three rings, each extremely intricate and telling detailed stories.

Spark of Life- Inscribed with an image depicting the creation of the dwarves from a spark of Torag's Forge, given by the high clergy on the anointment of new preists. Brass. Worn on beard.

Stone Endures- An engraving of a dwarf working a block of stone into a statue when spun from left to right. Given in recognition of Vallen's sculpting and masonry skills. Brass. Worn on beard.

Shelter of Faith- An etched scene retells the story of Vallen's time in Newspring, where despite the wild conditions far from a mountain home, he administered daily rights of Torag for the few surviving Dwarfs. Silver. Worn on right hand, 3rd finger.

Personality:

Vallen is blunt and forward, and unless the situation is obviously precarious and requires the more delicate touch of another, he will speak his mind. The priest has a wide range of book knowledge, and has begun to accumulate experience to back it up. With the exception of his year in the lost colony of Newspring, he is not well traveled and has little experience with the world outside of Highhelm. Vallen is obsessed with being clean and will only tolerate filth when concentrating on working or accomplishing an immediate goal.

The dwarf prefers to keep to himself and working on projects, but he has no trouble talking to people when approached or going out of his way to assist those in need; which he sees as his duty. Contrast to his usual carefully spoken, firm demeanor, when speaking of engineering, architecture, or stonework Vallen may become very animated and excited. He can sometimes talk and gesticulate too quickly during these moments, causing him to bite his tongue, mess up his beard, or knock over expensive by-standing objects. He learned to carry and use a chalkboard to illustrate ideas while speaking, thus steadying his pace and hands.

Vallen is devotedly religious and prays to the entire dwarven pantheon when appropriate. However, Torag is his primary deity and focus- all of his craft works are to please the forge father. The priest his happiest when working with stone, which has always held a special bond with him. While technically not sworn to it, Vallen follows one of the Paladin Oaths of Torag- "My creations reflect the depth of my faith, and I will not allow flaws save in direst need." Anything worth doing is worth doing to perfection.

The young priest keeps his word to the best of his ability, and a verbal oath from him has the same strength as a blood pact. He knows that accepting defeat is an option, but there will be many bruises before that option is considered.

He sees the world as Torag's creation and gift, and appreciates it as it is. His sculpting and architectural styles compliment the land, and his finished works seem as if they had actually always been there, formed tens of thousands of years ago. When he encounters a problem, he must stop and formulate a plan. Attempts to solve a problem will always involve faith and engineering first, whichever is appropriate.

He is unsure of his role in the world, but trusts Torag will guide him. Vallen, however, will make decisions for others if necessary- for their own good. He has started to accept the death of his brother Azak, who stood as a mortal god in his youth. His bravery was unmatched, and Vallen aspires to just as brave... someday. Some combat experience and a gun has helped steady his nerves in a fight, but he still is wary of danger. Sometimes, he still wakes from horrid nightmares of the kraken that destroyed the Golden Pegasus crawling onto land and devouring the rest of his family, leaving him alone...

Goals:

Vallen's dream of building a city remains bright, and this new opportunity to act as a settlement planner has the priest excited. This excitement is magnified by the fact this expedition is on land, the bandits are mostly gone, and there are no kraken.

Connections and Business:

Connections:

Jarla Silverclasp (F Dwarf Aristocrat) Vallen and Jarla could be twins, if Jarla was not over 20 years older than Vallen. Vallen's sister was the first born daughter of the family and raised from birth to walk in her mother's footsteps, taking over the business. She is calculating and dour in the company of those who know her, but she has the ability to turn on the charm to seal a deal. An expert businesswoman, she holds the family's profits and connections in high regard.

Jarla respects Vallen's skills as an architect and a priest of Torag, but she asserts her familial dominance when it suits her needs. The two of them survived the New World Together, and she will not forget Vallen kept her fed and protected while she handled diplomatic matters within Newspring.

With Azak's death, she is now first born child. This may have made some lazy and entitled to their family riches, but it only spurred Jarla on. She is currently operating her own business ventures elsewhere.

Vallen has two other uncharacterized siblings. Jarla or any of the others are for the GM to use in any capacity they desire, if at all.
