Awesome - safe travels, Nerk! I hope you are able to see and do a lot. I don't foresee anyone losing interest either, and although I could spend all day hitting f5, it is probably for the best that I get a little done at work the next month and a half!

Vallen Silverclasp |

So we have 31 goods. We can put together another farm if we get 14 more labor, two farms if we get 29 more labor.

Sorala |

Sorala will put her money towards a point of labor. 13 more to go!

Cueta Guiding Star |

OK, so going forward, when we get back to Newspring, how do you all want to handle this food situation? I figure on average we can bring in (Cueta, Gair, Kal'Tos, Istiel) a total of 14 food/day. If Ben is not scouting, he can also bring in an additional 4/day. This total could be pushed higher as well with Gair using his roll twice trait.
We currently have 54 people foraging. And when the penalties for foraging the same hex aren't in effect, then they bring in about 1 food/person, correct?
We have 2 people fishing. I think we can count on them bringing in 2 food/day on average?
We'll have 134 people in Newspring when the PCs, Manari, Bern and the new girls get back. By my estimation, not including the PCs, we've got 35 people doing various NPC-ish things: the 5 guards, the 5 PC2s, the Thayers, Ingwe, the Thayers' teams (whatever it is that they do), and various others at DM Nerk's discretion. Since the projects build themselves, that leaves about 43 people doing what exactly? Some, or all of these people should probably be involved with food gathering at this point.
So, assuming that the PCs are foraging and exploring, we have on average without any penalties, roughly 70 food/day coming in, with 43 people to spare.
But, assuming that Newspring is roughly in the middle of its hex, at 20' movement it will take 6 hours to get to a new hex. Thus, we are going to lose a day to and from Newpsring's hex to forage a different one. So, it stands to reason that:
1. Foragers should spend multiple days in each hex, and then bring the food back to Newspring, or
2. We set up some system by which some people act as food gophers, moving any surplus from the hexes foraged to Newspring on an every other day basis. We would thus have to set "base camps" for the foragers to meet the gophers every other day, but this shouldn't be too difficult to do.
I'm thinking we take about 70 people plus us PCs to the first hex we explore, and let the 70 people forage while we explore the hex for threats. I doubt 70 people get attacked unless there is a large group of something in the same hex, and on day one the PCs should be able to be pretty near the foragers. On days 2 and 4 the gophers bring food back to Newspring (if any surplus exists) and we (and the foragers move onto hex #2 on day 5. Rinse and repeat until we get to Dwarf Island, and then we double back.
Thoughts? I'm sure there's probably a better way to do things...

Cueta Guiding Star |

Can we build hunting and/or fishing teams? Would these teams work better than the foragers? Have a bonus to survival plus the +2 per person in the team modifier? Or, be able to hunt in hexes without suffering the "next day" penalty?

Vallen Silverclasp |

Also, once the situation dawns on Vallen he is probably going to use his daily spell allotments to cast Abstemiousness, reducing our food requirements by 3. If Kal'tos does the same, it will reduce our food requirements by 6.
Also, when we have a council we should discuss making any child big enough to to carry food out there working. Essentially anyone over the age of 10, which is generous really. Nerk said there were 12 children I believe- which honestly may be low enough not to bother with. We don't want to ruffle too many feathers.
While I'd like Vallen generating income/capital, I'll have him go with when we move through Bugbear territory, so you guys have a translator.

Cueta Guiding Star |

Good luck getting things sorted out, Gair! If no one has any better ideas, Cueta will be pushing for the plan outlined above at the inevitable moot.

Vallen Silverclasp |

The extra 43 people are making rolls to generate gp/capital to build things, or are part of teams. At this point, half rations (Gair's plan) combined with exploration/extended foraging sounds good. We can go with your plan Cueta, but we are probably going to lose some folk to the beasties of the wild.

Vallen Silverclasp |

I'm not sure. Gair is kind of our de facto leader in-character and usually initiates these decisions. I believe since these matters are affecting everyone we should just have a moot.

Vallen Silverclasp |

Works for me!

Gair Hearthseeker |

And back, at least for the moment.
As Kal'Tos said, the whole reason we set up the council was to be able to make decisions without holding a moot. Based on how we picked our members, those invested in having a say have one on the council.
Catching up on gameplay now.

I'm hoping someone has a better idea, to be honest! I just can't figure another way to get around the problem that 6 hour travel will have with gathering food.
DM Nerk, can we build hunter or fisher teams that wouldn't suffer the -1 per day check penalty that our unskilled folks have?
Also, capital is still half-price this month, correct? If so, Sorala should have enough "gp" in 2-4 days to turn into 4 labor for a garden, if the community donated the goods needed. She'd eventually want to change it into an alchemical/herbal supplies garden, but would be happy to grow food in it for the time being, until the food situation is ironed out. I think gardens, as Gair has pointed out earlier, are the way to go - the build time is 12 days and the cost is less.

Vallen Silverclasp |

Nerk said that gardens produce 18 food/5 days- farms produce 4 food/day. Slightly less yield but certainly faster to build- they may be our salvation. Additionally they can be upgraded to Greenhouses, which are even better than a Farm. Of course we'd need a source of glass before we were able to build such a thing.
I approve of building gardens. Vallen will start producing money soon, and we can pool our cash together to get some gardens started.

Cueta Guiding Star |

Oooh! We had a glassblower? Was it one of your halfling friend/family members?

Vallen Silverclasp |

Nerk had our only glassblower eaten by kuru
Nerk is trying to deny us tactical resources! Clearly he's going to betray us, just like the Thayers will. Edmund is building walls to keep us IN.

Cueta Guiding Star |

Edmund is building walls to keep us IN.
He's a tricky one!
I have wondered about these bunks, though. Why the bunks first, when we need food and defenses? Who is going to get to bunk in the bunks? I guess we'll find out soon...

Vallen Silverclasp |

Who knows- Sandra is just doing what she believes is best.

Cueta Guiding Star |

Who knows- Sandra is just doing what she believes is best.
Oh yeah, I mostly kidding around... mostly. There's still that little part of me that thinks those Thayers are up to no good.
But if I were to bet: Sandra is a CG bard worshipper of Sheyln.

Cueta Guiding Star |

Excellent, the first stage of the dwarves plan for seizing power in Newspring is completed. Next we make Vallen temporary dictator due to some crisis.
Nice! That'll show those non-committal elves!

Vallen Silverclasp |

Good, good... step 1 is complete Kal'tos. Soon we will have workers for our mines... soon...

Vallen Silverclasp |

Yup fine with me. I was just giving Gair a chance to make any important points/stress things.
So there I was... alone, surrounded by ten thousand undead kuru... with nothing but a bugbear statue and a handful of Torag's nuts...

Vallen Silverclasp |

Ha! I'm here to help.

Kal'Tos |

You left out the demon-Kuru leader that took 3 hits from Gair's axe and several other wounds to put down.

Cueta Guiding Star |

Maybe we landed in between multiple goblinoid villages? Just because the scouts were sent in the opposite direction doesn't mean it was safer.
Oooh. That would be... bad. It is a definite possibility. Of course, if they are warring with each other, we may be able to use such a thing to our advantage as well.

Gair Hearthseeker |

Sorry guys, crazy weekend! New girlfriends are always trouble on one's schedule. Should be back for a more stable week now.
So I'm to understand it's time to start sucking up to our new dwarven overlords if we want to avoid being relegated to the mines?

Gair Hearthseeker |

Haha, I was just trying to be subtle.
Trust me, I'll make my apologies to you lot but if she wasn't worth it I would have been here. Best weekend of my life frankly! I'll just have to hope there are more to come.

Cool! Glad to hear of nice things happening to nice people!
On the subject of capital, I would suggest anyone with the gold take advantage of those half-price capital payments this month, more for the savings in time than for the gold itself.
However, Gair, with us scouts, I think it is a little more difficult, b/c we don't really have the luxury of a day at this point to spend getting the capital going. Though I suppose that you could catch up with us after earning your capital, or just give your money to the community to earn the capital with.

Hassan Antar |

No need for the northern savage to hang around. I'm more than capable setting the soldiers to help you in between their other duties.
Gair will go with the exploration team, Hassan can work on earning the capital. He's more master of affairs here at Newspring.

Vallen Silverclasp |

Vallen is going to start bringing in the cash, I will see to it.

Ben Sandlock |

I am sorry to say that I am going to have to absent myself from the boards for awhile. Some real life things have come up, and I can't take the time to play or run any games. Sorry to let you all down like this. I have enjoyed playing with you all and hope my leaving won't be too much of an inconvenience. To those of you in my Skull and Shackles game I can't tell you how sorry I am to disappear on you all like this. I said I would finish at least the first book of the AP but it just isn't possible right now.

That sucks, hopefully your real world stuff fixes itself soon.

Vallen Silverclasp |

Sorry to hear that Ben, I hope we see you back soon! I wish you luck and hope everything calms down.

Oh no! I've enjoyed gaming with you and hope to again in the future. Best of luck to you and Cueta will keep a good eye on the halflings in your absence!

Cueta Guiding Star |

What do you all think of Nerk's reminder that we can trade in capital? We could trade in 12 goods for 4 labor towards a garden, and start a garden tomorrow. With Sorala bringing in another 4 labor in a few days time, we could put another 5 goods towards a second garden, and still have 9 goods left over to put towards something else.

Vallen Silverclasp |

The 3 to 1 conversion is a bit too steep in these circumstances. We should just keep the goods and focus our downtime capital generation on labor.

Cueta Guiding Star |

How long will it take to raise the additional 4 labor/garden to add to the goods that we have?
Sorala can raise an average of 1.7 gp a day, which means about 6 days/labor or goods. It will take her about 24 days to raise the labor to put towards a second garden (remember our half-price discount ends this month). Assuming that Vallen stays and Hassan and Septimus all put their efforts into raising capital for gardens, and that they all have similar modifiers, we are looking at about 1 week to get a garden going. That's not so bad I suppose - the difference being about 21 units of food over that time, which is just a drop in the bucket to our needs at this time. And then the 12 days to construct the garden as well. We could build a garden a week for 6 weeks with the goods that we have, and then in 8 weeks have about 18 food/day to show for it.

Gair Hearthseeker |

Sorry to hear that Ben. I hope things get better for you in future. We will be here if you want to come back.

Gair Hearthseeker |

I'm also hesitant to convert our goods. It might save us a day or two now but over the course of weeks it will end up costing us a lot more than that.
Presently Hassan should be able to leverage 4 labor in 2 days with some decent rolls. Sorala has the capital right now to earn another 3 in the same time. Assuming the others can scrape up 1 more labor in that time, we should be able to get 2 gardens started in the next 3 or so days. I think that's pretty good.
I don't know about carrying on for the next 6 weeks but I think working on another garden or two in the short term is a solid plan, I'm on board.
Edit : Taking a look, Ben has a fair amount of resources at the moment. Given his history with us, do you think he would be willing to assist us given his new NPC status Nerk?
