Presently Hassan should be able to leverage 4 labor in 2 days with some decent rolls. Sorala has the capital right now to earn another 3 in the same time. Assuming the others can scrape up 1 more labor in that time, we should be able to get 2 gardens started in the next 3 or so days. I think that's pretty good.

Sorala is hoping with a couple of good rolls, to have enough gp for 4 labor in a few days, though if others can put together 1 quicker, that would be great! Either way, tomorrow, she will be rolling to convert 10 gp into 2 labor, if the dice go our way.

Ok, so who do we want in our exploration group? Thus far we'll have Ceuta, Gair, Kal'Tos, Istiel and I assume our impending new player.

Do we want to bring anyone else? Bern could easily be attached but I also think he could do quite well here in Newspring for a while now that he has made a bit of a name for himself.

Thinking about it, I assume Manari will be coming with as at least for the exploration of this first hex so that she can search for the missing elves, right?

That sounds like a good group to me. Bern would come along if you asked, but we should probably leave him in Newspring so he can kill any bears that happen to show up.

Yeah, mobile is important, I agree. We're going to forage too, right? That will cut our speed down a bit as is.

I think just the PCs and PC2 would be fine as well - if NPCs come along I would prefer one or more of Manari, Bern, Jaysin.

Yeah, we'll be slowed down by foraging. I think the most important part is that everyone in the group have 30ft movement speed so we can still make the most of our time.

I'm happy to leave Bern and Jaysin behind. I do still think that Manari will be unwilling to stay behind. Of course we'll know for sure once she gives us some input.

Kal'Tos, if Abadar could grant you one wish, what would it be?

Vallen, if you had one day left on Golarian, what would you do?

Dwarves, saying we can survive until emigrants from Avistan and Garund start arriving, are you planning on populating Dwarf Island? Will non-dwarves be welcome?

Gair, how many of your people need a home? Are your people migratory? How do you envision a home for your people in Newspring?

Gair, what, ideally, is the best outcome for Bern in this world?

Septimus, what did you do to get that brand?

Istiel, what in your past (if anything) makes you so, um, forthcoming with others?

Hassan, do you have a plan to deal with disputes between neighbors, as surely they will arise?

Everyone, any specific accomplishments that you all want to attain while alive in this New World?

Hm, limited time so I might answer these later. Great questions though!

I'll add a couple for you in that case :

Ceuta, given the relationship that has developed between your sister and Lady Kralish in your absence. What would you consider an ideal outcome to this situation? Do you hope to drive them apart of find a way to coexist with your former owner?

Sorala, did you develop your linguistic skills academically or were already well traveled before coming on this expedition with Garrack?

Hassan will do his best to deal out justice as his own sense of honor dictates. He's not likely to try following any codified set of laws at this point.

For more serious cases like murder he will certainly be unwilling to shoulder such responsibility on his own and present the matter to the council to pass judgement.

A little more time than I'd thought.

The Red Wolf following itself is comprised of roughly 250 members. His own people are his main concern however there are thousands more kellids who have not known a true home since Sarkoris was lost to them. If things work out for the Red Wolves I imagine the new world might attract a lot of attention from others.

Like most Kellids the Red Wolves are nomadic, ranging across the steps of the mammoth realms. Should the day ever come for a mass relocation of his people, the Red Wolves are unlikely to settle in Newspring itself, instead claiming lands nearby as their new home.

As for Gair's part, his time away from his people forging a viable colony here are and will continue to change him. By the time his people arrive, it's likely that he will no longer feel like his place is strictly with them. Honoring his ties to Newspring, his is most likely to stay on as the liaison to the Red Wolves.

Ideally, he dreams that his son will grow into the kind of warrior and leader who would go on to be chosen to lead the Red Wolves. However, like much in Gair's life at the moment, that may well change as time goes on.

In Cueata's mind, the ideal outcome would be that Kralish turns out to be a devil worshiper and is caught red-handed sacrificing Edmund to her dark lords. Cueta saves the day (sadly not before Edmund is gifted to Asmosdeus and friends, though), and publicly executes Kralish in the town square of Newspring, the city which is now a prosperous naval and trade power, a power which is turned with all its might against the festering evil of Cheliax that the Lady Kralish embodied. Indeed, the Lady's execution ushers in the dawn of a new crusade to free the underclasses of that bloated empire. :)

However, the reality is setting in that Kralish may be around for awhile, and although if a just cause was found Cueta would gladly separate the Lady's head from her shoulders, the Mwangi will not engineer such a thing, at least as I see her now. Of course, she could always go down a darker path and end up doing something like that in the future, but currently, she believes what she's said about everyone having the opportunity to become the best version of themselves without interference, and Kralish should be afforded that chance too. And that storyline is much more interesting I think, though for Cueta it will be a bitter pill to swallow.

And a huge amount of guilt is beginning to set in as well, and I don't really know how that is going to play out.

(and I should add that I love what Nerk did with Melilla. I had a couple of ready-made enemies for him, and that wily DM kind of turned the tables on me - which I didn't see coming and was pretty fantastic.)

Hmm, I had not considered that he would not want the job of police, judge, and executioner, but that totally makes sense with his character (and is currently a bit out of bounds with his job description). It makes me think that the council should probably start to consider a *very* basic legal code so that there are no questions when disputes arise.

This brings up a question that I think bears asking in our new, multicultural home - how "unified" do we want the culture of Newspring and its surroundings to be? We've already got elves that could give or take the rest of us, and we may have the opportunity to coexist with other societies, like goblins, and nomads like the Kellids perhaps on the way. Do you all see the structure of Newspring and surroundings to be more like a loose federation of cultures, with the council representing this, or a more unified, top down government? If we end up a federation, I suppose that something could be legal in Newspring and illegal in elftown, for example. It could be tricky.

This says "federation" to me.

Regardless, I don't think Cueta knows of your plans to relocate the Red Wolves (and perhaps others) here. She knows more than most about diasporas, and if you make her aware down the line of what you have in mind, you would gain a steadfast ally in any plans or actions to make your people get here.

The first truth of Abadar is one must have money to make money.

large scale food production in the new world would essentially be a licence to print money. All that money could then be sunk into proper dwarven things like breweries (using my own crops of course, got to keep costs down) and mines. The even more money I made from doing that would then allow me to set Horn'Tos up with a better forge where he (and his horde of minions) could make even more money turning the ore from my mines into finished products (which are worth a lot more than raw ore)

Like any proper dwarf, Kal'Tos is extremely unhappy with the lack of proper alcohol producing establishments.

New spring will likely become a provincial capital and important port. It will likely become the most fortified and established village/ town/ city of the colony and focus on being the exchange between the colony and the old world.

If Vallen's parents send more dwarves, they would gobble that place up and turn it into a bustling trade port. This is unlikely. They are businessdwarves and having lost a huge investment I doubt they will put more resources into the matter, especially because we discovered it after the Lillend left. They will want their children back, and that's probably all.

Asking a guy from Cheliax that you barely know, but who likely has magic powers how he got a strange brand is really dangerous question.

His life experiences have made him secretive and mistrusting by nature. Notice how he hasn't really gone out of his way to interact with anyone on more than a cursory level, and was largely an unknown until he had to reveal that he could heal someone who was injured.

Istiel was a guard at the town of Greengold for nearly 50 years. Greengold is a sort of social experiment by the Elves. Essentially, Greengold is a diplomatic meeting point for foreign races (mostly humans) to meet with Elf diplomats and lords. It is also a half-elf settlement, the only one of its kind. Years on years of dealing with male humans trying to court elven ladies, breaking up drunken human brawls because "the pointy eared fella looked at me funny!" and dealing with general human impatience has left her incredibly jaded. She sees 99% of humans as short-sighted and ridiculously ambitious. In her opinion, if a human gets riled up and starts causing serious trouble it's better to just put the dog down- they won't live much longer anyway.

She doesn't like most other races for some reason or another, with the exception of dwarves. They are tolerable. They lack a respect for the land but their hard work, ruggedness, and their ability to craft fine long-lasting weapons and structures earns her respect. Istiel expresses little emotion to anyone but other elves, simply because they are not worth the effort. Half-elves? They're just half bad.

Hullo from hot, sweaty, southeast Asia.

There will be days when I don't post at all for the next month, but I'm not by any means giving up on this.

Because my posting will be infrequent, I'm going to hold off recruiting more players (I'm thinking 2, to restore us to the original number) until August. I'm also trying to think of how they find you guys, what they might know that you guys don't etc. There's always the possibility that some of your current generic NPCs might suddenly sprout hitherto unsuspected competence, and gear, but that seems flimsy.

Anyway, I'm going to look in on the gameplay thread for a bit. I like these questions, and I have two of my own:

What do you want?
What do you fear?

Waiting until august for new players seems fair to me, and that's a rather exciting concept if they're natives of the land and know things we don't. I bet there are players out there who would scramble over each other to roleplay something like that.

I will get to those existential questions later... I have barely answered them in real life :p

Oh, I want to see a Vallen-carved entire mountain-home, though Cueta will be sad that she couldn't turn you into a saltbeard.

On that note I would like to submit a new name for Dwarf Island- Dwarf Portress, or just Portress. If people can handle living in a cave and a dwarven work schedule, they are welcome at the Portress!

Portress works for me. I think if Vallen makes it, and Newspring makes it, Vallen's parents may be willing to further invest. I mean, North American colonies often lost money for a looooooooonnnngggg time before they returned on investment.

What if people want to live on top of Portress? Build buildings and such at "ground" level?

I would like to see this as well! On a related note, Cueta's got some ideas for a horse-powered river craft that she's going to need your help with down the line. It is not a feat of engineering that will be a marvel, but I think it will be useful for our people, and perhaps a good start for Vallen's da Vinci-ism.

Well, Cueta will be intrigued, when she becomes aware of Septimus (I don't think she's realized that he's at Newspring yet, as she's been mostly gone). But, she'll tread lightly until she knows him better, because she thinks all Chels are dangerous. She'll probably take his prisoner's brand to mean that he could be a valuable ally, and start cautiously trying to figure him out.

Hullo! I've been to east Asia a couple times, but never south of Shanghai. It is probably my favorite region of the world to travel (though I might choose to live in other places if all other things were equal). I'd very much like to see Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand and Laos. Where are you now / will you be headed?

DM Nerk wrote:

Cueta has some near and long-term wants. Near-term, she wants to have a relationship, of some positive sort, with her sister. She wants to keep the people of Newspring safe, and this means in the near-term scouting and addressing possible threats in the nearby area, whether via force or negotiation. Unless a threat makes it clear that it can only be dealt with via violence (like the Kuru), or they fit one of her triggers (slavers, harmers of women and/or children, Chels, cruel people) Cueta will always try for the negotiated approach first.

I think that with her mother/child way of viewing relationships, she'll probably begin to think of herself as one of Newspring's mother figures before too long, and eventually will want to take on more of a leadership position within the society.

Long term, she'd like a boat, or a few boats: A horse-powered keel boat (with help from Vallen for the design), for river exploration and warfare; a small canoe for exploration and stealth; a war galley to defend the coasts, and a traditional, piraty-type sloop ship for trade and raiding. Basically, she wants to be the Jay Leno of ships instead of cars, collecting way more of them then she could possibly use.

She fantasizes about being the New World's version of a Shackles pirate captain, with a fleet behind her, but I imagine as her connection to Newpsring grows her desires will change a bit. She has a keen interest and understanding of the need for easy land travel, and may be interested in that aspect of travel as well - helping Newspring, either publicly or privately, with the maintenance and building of roads, trails, a pony-express type operation, and/or stagecoach lines.

She'd also like to build her own fort/dock/trading post/naval academy and base.

And, though she'd be loathe to admit it, her time in Cheliax has given her an appreciation for the game of politics and the skills to play it, if she can temper her dislikes enough to hide them from others, and bide her time until she can act. She doesn't realize it yet, but desires to be influential, in some form or another, and this ambition is really what is driving her. That ambition is also a means to end to provide for her "children" in her mother/daughter dichotomy: Deeshka, Melilla, perhaps eventually escaped Mwangi slaves and/or other groups of people in Newspring, depending on how things play out.

Oh, and she'd like to go to war with Cheliax and/or be a constant thorn in the side of that nation, at the very least by facilitating an underground railroad from Cheliax to the new world.

Cueta fears probably most of all letting those down who depend on her - like her sister. I imagine her guilt over leaving her sister behind, and her sister's relationship with Cueta, or lack of relationship, going forward, will be a powerful motivator in one way or another, positive or negative. Similarly, if she adopts a larger mother/child relationship with groups of people within Newspring.

Cueta also fears Lamashtu. Her prayers to the goddess are more along the lines warding against the evil eye, where sometimes you pray to appease malevolent forces, than it is similar to the prayer of Vallen or Kal'Tos, who see their dieties as the embodiment of a way of life. Cueta's fears are pretty basic in regards to Lamashtu - she spends time among monsters and is afraid that one day she will be eaten. As a player, I would like to see Cueta grow into the worship of a different religion - Desna is actually pretty perfect for Cueta, which given the goddess's relationship with Lamashtu, is even better.

And of course, Cueta fears captivity. Physical captivity, captivity via the machinations of societies (institutionalized slavery, captivity through debt or gendered roles or anything else really), captivity of destiny.

Waiting until august for new players seems fair to me, and that's a rather exciting concept if they're natives of the land and know things we don't. I bet there are players out there who would scramble over each other to roleplay something like that.

Yeah, I think it would be extremely cool to bring in some natives to the group! Alternatively, it's still entirely possible for there to be a couple small pockets of other survivors from the expedition nearby. Washed up on debris or landing in a longboat launched as one of the other ships went down. I think it's safe to say they would have had a harder time of it than us and could do well on the deeply traumatized or hardened badass angles.

Anyway, I'm cool with waiting on the new players. Though I think in this case we should probably bring Bern with us on the exploration in order to shore up the numbers.

His life experiences have made him secretive and mistrusting by nature. Notice how he hasn't really gone out of his way to interact with anyone on more than a cursory level, and was largely an unknown until he had to reveal that he could heal someone who was injured.

I am currently aiming to switch out his level of adept for a being a cleric of Calistria, focusing on the secretive/ trickery portion of her faith. He will have the luck and trickery domains.

The Calistra angle sounds really cool.

I totally understand the secrecy but we're not really talking character knowledge here just throwing out our ideas. Give everyone a better sense of who we're playing with and maybe foster some cool ideas down the line.

Also helps us not step on anyone's toes with the directions we're thinking of going.

I like this plan

Kal'Tos wants to keep his brother safe. He will do almost anything to protect Horn'Tos, Kal'Tos only came to the new world because he wanted to make sure that his brother wouldn't die alone far from home.

Kal'Tos fears that many residents of newspring will die due to lack of food in the coming months, this will leave new spring vulnerable, endangering his brother.

Male Human Incanter 3

Septimus wants to stay as far away from Cheliax as possible.

He is afraid that he will be hunted down and killed for what happened to his master back in Cheliax.

Vallen wants to: Please Torag, and be an accepted member of his family.

Please Torag- All of the blacksmithing, stonmasonry, and artistry that Vallen performs is a form of worship. While his current work conditions and available materials are sub-par in his opinion, he works with what he has. Sculpting stone is his calling, and while he has precious little reason or material to work at it lately, he desperately hopes he will be able to return to the chisel soon. Getting the forge running so he can at least resume traditional worship of Torag is his top priority at the moment. He believes that if he can draw the deity's praise through hard work and community, perhaps the townsfolk can receive more blessings than nuts.

Family- When Vallen returned from the Forge of Torag after becoming a cleric, he was thrilled to be sent on the journey and finally be of use to the family he had been away from for so long. After the kraken attack left his brother Ajax and many of his cousins dead, all Vallen has is Jarla right now. He does not cling to her, but hopes that she approves of his work and will go to great lengths to ensure her survival. Their mission to establish a Silverclasp mountainhome is mostly dead, but the discovery of the Portress has sparked ideas in Vallen's mind that he needs to discuss with his sister. Jarla has been rather quiet, but knowing Nerk she is going to be a plot point eventually.

As for fears, the loss of Jarla would probably break him. While he and his sister are not exceptionally close, just knowing that he has no more family left for hundreds of leagues would be enough to utterly crush his spirit. I usually outline Vallen's other fears in his nightmares, which are frequent. He has always seen them as warnings from his ancestors as to what to be wary of, but lately they have just been terrifying images of his experiences. Vallen is a bit of a coward and fears getting involved in a large battle or war. He is an artist, not a warrior, and he would have to be forced by serious circumstances to fight something alone.

His most current fear are the demon-worshipping dwarves they have seen traces of. If they have truly forsaken Torag, he knows he must try to bring them back to the flame. However, he knows that they will resist, and he abhors the thought of violence against fellow dwarves.

Istiel wants to do her job- protect the elves of the company. She especially wants to be close to Manari, but when the greater good calls for action (such as our current situation) she will take action without her. Istiel realizes she needs to widen her skill set to survive in this world, and is likely going to hit up Gair for some training to become a skirmisher ranger.

As for her fears- Well, Istiel is confident in her abilities as a warrior, and has yet to encounter anything that couldn't be killed with a well-placed arrow. Anything that can't be killed by simply hitting it to death would likely cause her alarm. For more existential fears, she worries what her fate will be in this new land, but for the most part Istiel is like most elves and goes with the flow of life.

Sorala's worst fear - the death of her husband - has been realized. Anything else is just really, really bad-tasting icing on that shit cake. If she wasn't so occupied with the trials in front of everyone, and didn't have Vallen's statue, which has somewhat alarmingly (perhaps to others) become a stand-in for the half-orc, the young half-elf would probably be much more despondent. Otherwise, her biggest fear is that with Garrack gone, she has lost one half of her team, and is woefully underqualified and unprepared for the leadership role that she is needed for.

Sorala is not sure, other than very basic survival needs, what she wants at this point. She's thrown herself into her work, crafting things for the people of Newspring and the council's business, to keep her mind occupied, and her body tired, so that she can sleep at night. At some point she will need more (probably around the time that things aren't so dire and she can stop to retrain her class)...
