Tall and well built with long blond hair and blue eyes Ben Sandlock is an impressive figure of manhood, for a Halfling. At three feet and five inches tall Ben is tall for a halfling. He wears his long hair woven into a complex braid that reaches the middle of his back. There are three links of chain woven into the braid at the base of his skull. He is clean shaven except for the long side burns that many halflings wear. He wears close fitting blue wool trousers tucked into brown leather gaiters. He wears a linen shirt, and a leather vest over it. He has a red silk scarf wrapped around his waist and a wide leather belt over it. A waist length blue wool coat and hooded grey cloak completes his outfit. A rapier hangs at his left side and a long dagger on his right. His belt also support a number of pouches that hold sling stones and other tools. (He wears two more daggers in wrist sheaths and thieves tools tucked into folds of the sash around his waist. Ben is like most halflings. He is fond of good food , good drink, and good company. Ben is and easy going agreeable person and makes an effort to get along with those around him. He is brave to a fault and will stand and fight when he should run. Background:
Ben Sandlock was born in the captain's cabin of the Summer's Breeze on the day it set sail from Korvosa on its first voyage. Ben took his first breath of air as the Summer's Breeze passed out of korvosa harbor into the open ocean. The Summer's Breeze was a halfling ship. It was built by Ben's father and crewed by the entire extend Sandlock family. Ben's father Gregor was the ship's Captain. His Grandfather Lucas not only designed the ship and oversaw its construction but also acted as the ships Sailing master. Ben's Uncle James was the first mate, and Ben's mother was in charge of the galley. By its last voyage Ben was 14 years old and the Summer's Breeze was home to 73 halflings. The Summer's Breeze was on course for Absalom when they were intercepted by a pair of Chelish warships. The halflings had no doubts about what would happen to them if they fell into Chelish hands so they tried to run, but the Chelish had a wizard or sorcerer onboard who stole the wind out of the Summer's Breeze's sails. The Summer's Breeze was boarded and her diminutive crew quickly beaten. The adults and very young were killed, the rest were taken to be sold as slaves. The cargo was stolen and the ship was burned and sunk. Ben doesn't know if any of the others taken from the Summer's Breeze are still alive. He only knows that he and the other survivors were taken to Cheliax and sold as slaves. Ben was sold to a Chelish ship captain. He spent seven years as a slave on the man's ship the Westport Gull. His duties included keeping the captain's cabin and serving meals to the ships officers. The Gull's captain was a hard man and the smallest mistake was rewarded with lashes. Ben quickly learned to do his tasks perfectly in order to avoid the lash. When the Gull was in port Ben was chained in the in the bilges. He was only give the run of the ship when it was out of sight of land. Ben was rescued from slavery by accident. The Gull fell prey to a pirate out of Slipcove on the Halfling controlled Bag Island. The pirates set Ben free and gave him a ride to Slipcove. The pirate captain a halfling called Laughing Jack Wallace offered Ben a job as a member of his crew when he found that Ben was a competent sailor. Ben spent four years as a member of Laughing Jacks crew. Two weeks ago Laughing Jack announced that he was going to retire to Absalom. Jack put into Port Peril. Sold his ship to his first mate and then took his fortune and left for Absalom as a passenger on board a merchant ship. The former first mate now captain paid off the crew and hired a new one. After receiving his pay Ben set off to look around Port Peril. He knows that his gold won't last long and plans to start looking for a new berth the next day. When evening comes Ben finds himself in the Formidably Maid. Crunch:
