I've got a spell I use that does the same thing, but we got ambushed. I miscalculated that a few good swings would take these guys down, so rather than waste a round, I just went for it. Basically I figured we could drop them before they dropped me.
Benaiah is a mechanical monster, but he is pretty hamstrung when he can't buff.

Thought that you were an Unchained version where you don't Rage Death. Either way - you are not dying in this encounter. Now <redacted> maybe. Decent chance.
::magical jazz hands::

![]() |

Haha :) I am mostly sure I haven't added in my rage hit points anyways, so if I go out of rage I will go negative but not die. I've also got another trick up my sleeve.
Re: barbarian version. The variant milticlassing rules don't allow the unchained barbarian. Benaiah is actually an alchemist that is slowly gaining barbarian powers, hence the rage death possibility.
In general I can be a bit if a resource miser, and the extract I have that prevents rage death is only 10 minutes per level. I normally take it with my mutagen, but I like to try to save it for when I am sure it will be useful. Got me this time... :)

So holy s@+@! The synergy, the dice rolls, the perfect storm, I LOVE IT!
You have Arimar using hero points, you have the buff - Gwen's heroism on Arimar, and you have the debuff, Karrden's glitterdust penalty to the giant's AC, all combine to confirm the second critical at exactly the hill giant's current AC. Nice!
Well done, I want to finish the combat because it is fun for me, but really nicely done.

![]() |

Good news! Benaiah's raging HP should have been 77, I missed that while updating my tagline (sorry!)
This means he has taken 71 damage, and is at 6hp. And now for the trick up my sleeve...
/goes back to gameplay thread

Arimar |

Exactly? Sweet. I can't believe I confirmed on a 2!
I actually originally had the roll as a 21, but realized I had a copy-paste error with furious focus. Stoked that the 19 hit!
And Benaiah, I heartily admire your build. When it works, it is nothing short of spectacular. I guess we're seeing the other side of the coin.
So glad you had the extra HP.

![]() |

More coming... hopefully I have time. That last post was absolutly spontaneous as I was trying to tie in everyone's aid. I quite enjoyed writing it, which is why it got a bit longer than I intended. I think I might have a good idea how to walk Benaiah out of this low point... With a little help from his friends that is. :)
Now for that uncomfortable conversation with Arimar... ;)

TheBobJones_GM |

I liked the character you created. I wouldn't mind a redemption if you relapsed from time to time.

![]() |

Sorry for the thread blast! Hopefully that didn't come out confusing and disjointed. Also, hope you enjoy... :)

Arimar |

Love the way you're doing that, Steve. Hope my post does yours justice and works well with what you intended. Sorry it took me so long to reply - I was embroiled in yard work all day. :-)

![]() |

Perfect. Sooooo Perfect. Love it :)

TheBobJones_GM |

Great work all around. Take as much time as you need for this. After all, this is why we play.
And yes, 8 charges not 9. I was posting at a Starbucks while my wife had a minor procedure. All is well.

Arimar |

Thanks mate.
Glad to hear all is well, despite the Starbucks. ;-)

![]() |

Yes, hope your wife is doing well!
On another note, so this is one of the challenging things about this character. Addiction and vices on this level are pretty foreign to me, at least in this manner. Its a bit of a struggle to envision how a person might react in this kind of situation.
So I guess I will say this... I've got a good idea/path for Benaiah's 'redemption', but he has a ways to go yet. So... No offense for what he is about to say... :)

Arimar |

None taken. I'd be disappointed if it was all over this easily.

Just to check, will being dressed in a cold weather outfit, in furs, in a tent and wrapped up in a winter blanket count as enough shelter from the below 0ºF temperatures?

Kaddren |

Will try to sneak in a post before meetings, but I have magical solutions to the cliff if mundane ones are deemed insufficient. At least, that's what Kaddren certainly is using. I am trying to preserve *some* of my spells though.

TheBobJones_GM |

Just to check, will being dressed in a cold weather outfit, in furs, in a tent and wrapped up in a winter blanket count as enough shelter from the below 0ºF temperatures?
I would say yes.

Arimar |

The altitude thing is going to be an issue, though. I've got a fairly high fort save, but after a few hours up there, we'll have to head back down. I don't think we've got a month to acclimatize.
That said, my lay on hands removes the fatigued condition, so we have 6 'cures' for altitude sickness per day. I can also memorize some lesser restorations (2) to help out.
If anyone is having issues with the cold, I can memorize endure elements but I think if we are sensible about using our gear properly, don't travel in the extreme cold (below 0ºF) and use the blackfire clay that I brought to warm up as needed, we should be fine.
I currently have ghostbane dirge and protection from evil memorized. The first can be invaluable if you need it, but it is highly circumstantial. The latter I seem to rarely get off in time to do any good.

![]() |

just my 2 cents, I think those are both good spells to keep on the side. Like you said, ghostbane dirge is highly circumstantial, but makes what could be a very deadly/difficult encounter into something reasonable. Worth it IMO. (so much so, I even chose it as a spell for my life oracle)
I also agree that we should be able to get by with the mundane countermeasures for weather.
RE: not spending too much time up at high altitudes, we could probably consider setting up some sort of base camp at a mid-point, and maybe get proper camping supplies from the Oread village.
Some food for thought. ... eh, Just realized this food for thought I was about to write is better said in character. See gameplay thread...

Arimar |

You don't already have proper camping supplies? Arimar is fully equipped. ;-)
Thanks for the feedback on the spells, mate. I may switch out Protection from Evil for a Lesser Resto. We'll see.

Kaddren |

I've been meaning to do a lengthy discussion of Kaddren's spellcasting abilities, but that'll have to wait for this evening, hopefully. He does have Endure Elements in his spellbook and swap out for it as needed. His archetype also allows him to cast a limited number of Druid / Cleric spells with the [Good] descriptor, and Lesser Resto is one of the ones he has. It costs an Arcanist Pool point and a spell slot for each swapped out spell, though, so it gets costly quick.
Really, he's the arcane equivalent of a swiss army knife. It might take some time and effort fiddling with things, but he can kind-of-sort-of be a pair of pliers, or cut something, or screw something in.
Also, something has gone terribly, terribly wrong if he ever engages in melee combat.

TheBobJones_GM |

Also, something has gone terribly, terribly wrong if he ever engages in melee combat.
Or I am doing something right. ;)

Arimar |

Heh. Nice work on the spells, Kaddren. I did notice that your AC is rather on the low side. Perhaps some bracers of armor might work well for you after our next 'treasure haul'...

Kaddren |

He has a harmaki (+1 armor), and a mithral buckler (+1 shield). He can also Barkskin at the cost of an Arcane Point and a spell. That's probably the best he's going to get though unless he starts to cast Mage Armor in 5 hour stints, but that starts to get resource intensive fast (likely using a Arcane Point to swap out the spell for something more useful.)
He *can* use a variation of Dimension Door that doesn't eat his turn for an one Arcane Point as a move or withdraw without an AOO. You are right that an archer would pincushion him, though, unless he gets off a defensive spell.
Also, because I'm getting tired of writing "Arcane Point", and to avoid confusion with Action Points, I think I'll short hand them to AxP, as they fuel exploits.

Kaddren |

For the record, that post contained a Monty Python reference, a Princess Bride callout, and ahomophobic wordplay (assent / descent.) Kaddren is fun to write for.
I'm trying to contain the fourth wall breaks of keeping him from being -too- over the top, but a few of the posts have made me grin for a while after writing them, so there's that.

Arimar |

Heh. He reminds me of when you were playing Chumley (without the accent). I think it's a better fit for your style.

TheBobJones_GM |

+1

Kaddren |
1 person marked this as a favorite. |

<Chumley voice>: "Pish posh... though that is a fair cop..."
I'll +1 that as well. Malgrim was fun and an interesting character... particularly in combat... but he was a challenging departure from my comfort zone. The overly intelligent, somewhat full of himself, incredibly cheerful comedian is basically an exaggerated "me" and kind of writes itself. Malgrim I had to put a lot of effort into "That's not something Malgrim would say" and "How can I convey this in the fewest words."

So every year in my hometown we have the Gaylord Alpenfest. It is a week long festival celebrating the town's 'Sister City', Pontresina, Switzerland.
Every year they elect choose a Burgermeister to be the grand marshall of the parade/honorary mayor. All the men wear Lederhosen and the women wear Dirndls
I really wanted to find a way to work in a subtle reference to all of that, but couldn't find anything clever.
This concludes today's episode of random useless facts. Thanks for indulging me.
(seriously though, even if you don't care about what I just wrote, at least click on the link for the Dirndl. Google images you wonderful algorithm you...)

TheBobJones_GM |

ok, so all finished - I am familiar with the term burgermeister but chose the english equivalent.
Autocracy
A single individual chosen by the people rules the community. This leader’s actual title can vary—mayor, burgomaster, lord, or even royal titles like duke or prince are common. (No modifiers)

![]() |

I wasn't suggesting that you chose the wrong variant... just wanted to say "LOOK AT ME! I KNOW WHAT THAT WORD MEANS BECAUSE I HAVE A VAGUELY CONNECTED LIFE EXPERIENCE! AND LOOK AT THESE DIRNDLS! AREN'T THEY GREAT?"
It's all about me really
And the dirndls.
Keep up the good work, I'm loving it.

![]() |

Oh. We also sing Edelweiss every year. It's tradition. The sound of music runs in our veins.
Lockwood knows.
He knows.

Arimar |

Arimar |

Adding to Benaiah's know-it-all-ness...
"Burg" is a town (typically one centered around a keep or castle).
"Burger" is a citizen.
"Burgermesiter" is a master of citizens (or mayor).
"Burgo" is just an anglicization (an accepted one in the word "burgomesiter") of "Burger" (ie. citizen).
For a classic example... Hamburg is a town in Germany. A Hamburger is a citizen of Hamburg.

TheBobJones_GM |

Sorry for the thread blasts today. Will post a brief recap once you are done with questions.

Kaddren |

Heh, well, I figured it was something like that, but "burgo" didn't come up with any real google hits. Of course, it could have been "burgo" was a type of herd animal or something, too ;)
I do appreciate the increase in useless knowledge, though.

Gwendolyn "Cadence" Mehra |

None of that happens. I'm not sure what Steve is talking about.

![]() |

There is. Just not anything specific of Lockwood singing.
Or me.
Because there never will be. Evarh. (I can't speak for lockwood though)
(7:00 is the proof - 5:15 is the start of the 'event' that is the reason behind the tradition of singing Edelweiss)

TheBobJones_GM |

So again a bit sorry about the thread blasting actually sorry not sorry I am pretty stoked about this part of the adventure. I know the difficulty of reading that wall of text and deducing what is going on, so for those that just want the gist of the convo
- You cannot get to Hollow Mountain unless you go from Northpass to the Alaznist Step.
- It is currently controlled by 10 or more giants, all more powerful than the youths you killed rescuing Orus
- There is also a nest of harpies
- There is a mountain man - Elyas that has claimed eastern portions of Rivenrake Mountain as his own. Both the giants and oreads leave him to it.
- The mountain has its own inherent dangers, wildlife & environmental conditions
- Burgomaster Draslas and the village council would like to lend you military aid, but only if they consider your plan to have a reasonable chance of success.

Thank god there is no proof of me singing, I am utterly terrible.
Especially at that karaoke joint in Seoul, butchering Take on Me.

Crap. Just when I thought I had erased that from memory...
*shudder*

![]() |

Just a quick note - I too, am loving this part of the adventure. We've got plenty to think about as far as strategy/planning, so I'll need some time to marinate on it. Really digging it though.

Arimar |

Sorry, was hoping to have another post up by now. Too much other things on. I'll see what I can do but at this point, looking like Saturday.
Also +1 to the current situation. Looking forward to figuring out what to do about the harpies and giants.
