Wilcrim Stroivan is now 100% complete. Finally. :P

That's an impressive wall of bait you built there, matey. Unfortunately you recycled every scrap of it from every forum troll that I've ever seen on these boards, so I can only give it a 5/10. Try harder next time.

Wow.

Since I'm actually not trolling, I deleted the post.

But my point stands, which is this: It actually can be fun to play non-optimized characters, or optimized characters through their non-optimized levels, and quitting a game because you think you might have to play through some of those non-optimized levels and that doing so isn't any fun is just depriving yourself of what can be some of the most fun times available at a gaming table.

My apologies for phrasing that in a way that was so easily interpreted as trolling... and "recycled" trolling, at that. Ouch!

Let's play nice ladies and gentlemen. I'm sure the GM is looking for a group of people who can get along.

Three levels in PbP time is easily a year plus. That's a long time to have a character running on novelty alone.

See how much nicer that sounds without the "You're not a real roleplayer" context?

I still heavily disagree with both your starting premise (That nobody here but you understands that, shock of all shocks, unoptimized characters can be fun) nor the conclusion (That you're depriving yourself of fun by playing a character for, as Johnnycat points out, a significant period of time that will be marginally useful at best for that whole period...why would you not go with a character concept that is both more fun mechanically and grabs you as much flavor-wise?).

In Akash's case, using a club or crossbow as you suggested in the deleted post takes a lot away from the character, mechanically and not. He's a whip using sadist slavemaster, the whip image is very much a part of the concept. I suppose I could shank people with a dagger or something which looks pretty good too, but...

Mechanically, an Unchained Rogue has to choose a single weapon for his Finesse Training, so I'd be swinging a dagger for a flat 1d4 from levels 3-6...which may as well not be contributing in combat since enemies are going to have vastly larger numbers of HP. Keep in mind most CR 2 (that is creatures we'd be fighting in packs from the get-go, and Akash would be expected to be able to take on ALONE) creatures have roughly 20 HP. It's like attacking a man with a toothpick. Maybe you'll get lucky and nick an artery somehow, but he's probably going to kill you first. Which doesn't really make Akash look like a guy who should be along for the ride. This is a mission to save the world, why would you bring the wimp?

Even worse would be thinking he could just take Finesse Training in some other weapon, since the entire Prestige Class his build is based around getting into uses whips. Almost all of the abilities require using a whip to function, so that's non-negotiable.

And why not drop the PrC? Because I have dropped it EVERY SINGLE TIME I've wanted to use it up until now for various reasons, and I think waiting 3 years to try it out is long enough, don't you?

karlprosek: The link below takes one to the post with the mechanical stuff of your character. seeing as how the fluff is in a different post of yours (this one). If you make a post that includes both, I will change it accordingly in the next list update post.

Changing Elek ever so slightly, I have made his background knowledge geography instead of history, He has a good understanding of his orders history but everything else is very average. Where as a trained cavalry officer his knowledge of Geography would be important, he is especially familiar with the Worldwound since that is where he has spent his entire life. Now if he can just meet some people who might need a guide there! ;)

Also, this is the next vignette of his story.

The Training:

It was an early spring morning, the sun was rising over the barren landscape of the worldwound, all of his chores had been done before he meditated for an hour. By meditate we mean beating a pell with a lead cored iron sword while trying to focus on releasing the pain, weariness, stress and fear to empty himself in an attempt to allow the light to flow through himself. Soon the unit would be mounted and scouting the flank of the latest pack of demons whose movements they were following. Elek was lucky to get this time with his mentor. Fortunately Maralictor Krunug always took time with his newly appointed squires to see how there training was going.

Elek stood in uniform, wearing the newly acquired worn parade armor over his waistcoat, feet planted parallel, bokken raised in the starting position for ‘eagles eyrie’ breathing deeply attempting to clear his thoughts and draw the light in to replace them. Maralictor Krunug stood in front of him, all six foot six, hands on hips, his long brown hair held back by the yellow head scarf. hachimaki Already in his pewter grey breast plate, bastard sword on hip. Elek stared at the familiar eye of Aroden circled by the Cheliax circle-cross, to keep himself from shaking.

Krunug approached Elek, reaching out and turning the edge of the raised bokken a few degrees slightly to the left, he warned ”Be careful not to favor your strong arm, it will throw off the kata.” Stepping back from the youth he added. ”You will go through ‘flying black crane in winter’s storm’ at one fiftieth speed, as you do so you will recite the four sword styles and in your own words explain their differences.” Elek breathed in deeply, awaiting for his instructor to tell him to begin.

”Begin” was all Krunug said as he watched the boy. Elek brought the bokken slowly from the beginning positon into a two-handed slash hooking slightly to the left and then right to belt level, as he did so he recited, ” The four fighting styles are named after the four elements, Air, Fire, Water and Earth. Pivoting on his right foot he moves the blade back to his left to where it would be pointed directly at his opponent, then thrusting straight forward, ”Each style is titled with attacks named from animals associated with and encapsulating that style: Air with birds of prey, water with sea creatures, earth with large omnivorous beasts and fire with vicious carnivors.” Krunug calls ”Stop”

Elek stops with his bokken fully extended, arms straight out. Krunug walks up and grasps the end of the stick and pulling on it slightly begins to tip Elek off balance, warning ”Leave a little bend in your elbows, you want a little give in case your weapon gets snagged, you don’t want to be off balance.” wiggling the tip before he releases it, he adds ”Continue.” Elek raises the blade fully to his left side and then, shifting his left foot forward, hooking it down slightly, brings it across at neck height to a point where the tip is parallel to his right shoulder. ”The earth style favors slower stronger swordsmen, putting their blade at a position of easy defense where they can use their mass to their benefit. It is usually the preferred choice of knights who use the greatsword.” Krunug again calls ”Stop”

As Elek stands, his blade extended out past his right shoulder, Krunug turns the blade slightly so it is again parallel to the earth and moves the tip back so it does not go past Eleks shoulder. ”Remember to not turn your blade out of center with your right hand and do not over extend this cut, if you opponent is fast he will be able to get around your parry, and you will have exposed your left shoulder or left leg.” Elek nods as the instructor steps back.

Continuing Elek brings his right foot parallel to his left as he brings the blade back across his body slashing toward his left hip ”The water style favors swordsman who are southpaws and mirrors the fire style leaving variations for mostly right handed opponents.” As he slides his left foot forward slightly and bringing the sword from his left hip back to the beginning position the sword raised both hands on the grip, handle just visible in his periphery, blade tip slightly forward, he continues. ”The fire style favors aggressive attacks from a swordsman whose right-handed, both of these styles work well with shields.” Krunug, frowning slightly, asks as he moves forward ”Stop, which of the senior squire has been overseeing this kata?” As he reaches forward and turns the edge of the blade to ninety degrees again. Elek winces ”Ruphio, sir” Krunug grunts as he instructs ”Finish”

Elek brings the blade slowly downward as he shifts his left foot slightly back bringing the handle to his left hip, and the tip to the width of his shoulder, about nose height, ”The air style is an aggressive style focused on faster strikes, “ He shifts the blade hooking it slightly and bringing it slashing chest height from left to right ending with the hilt at shoulder level and then back to the left slashing at neck level ending again with the sword pointing at the imagined opponent’s chest, this time his arms properly bent and the sword blade ninety degrees parallel to the ground. As he does so finishing his description, ”which favors a lighter blade held in two hands. “

Elek inhales slowly waiting for instruction. Krunug obliges, ”Now as quickly as possible.” Elek flies through the moves his mentor watching him closely. As he finishes and returns to the starting position, Krunug ask ”Now at fifty percent” As Elek starts Krunug asks ”How is you meditation doing, Ruphio has said that you have reached into the light briefly when doing specific kata’s, ones your father taught you I believe, but not while working the pell, is that true?” when Elek finished the kata he answered ”Yes sir”

”Again, full speed” As Elek did the kata his instructor continued ”Ruphio also said that when you touched the light there was definite manifestations, describe them.” Elek finished the kata and keeping his sword raised, looked slightly confused but answered, ”I felt empowered, like I was unstoppable; stronger, healthier, bolder, but afterwards fatigued, and hungry” Elek smilled slightly.

Krunug walked over to Elek taking the longsword bokken from him, ”At ease” walking over to the weapons rack he set the stick down and began looking for another. ”As you know we teach all knights to focus on the light. That meditation teaches them concentration: to release their fear, to free their mind, to help them focus on muscle memory and ignore pain.” Picking up a much larger bokken he tests it and puts it back. Reaching for another, ”With some swordsmen it has a much different affect, it connects them to Aroden and they become Paladins of light, that is what your father is. Some Swordsmen it releases different giftings in. Your gift is similar to your mothers even though she is a sorceress your gift flows from the same place as hers. “ lifting a bokken that was larger than the first but not as large as the second. He walks back over to Elek. ”I will teach you to draw on that gift. As you said you feel more powerful, but because of this you will take chances and your defense will suffer, and fatigue will set in, do not forget.” taking Eleks hand and lifting it he looked at Eleks long arms, thick shoulders and barrel chest, he hands Elek the longer sword.

”Your father was right, you have elegant hands like you mother, very fast hands. But your arms, shoulder and chest are thick like his. You will do well with either the air technique or the fire. You will be instructed in both. But from now on you will use the bastard sword instead of the longsword, you have the finger length and hand strength for it. Now do the kata again full speed using the bastard bokken” Elek returned to his stance, inhaling, the slightest hint of a smile crossing his features as he begins ‘flying black crane in winter’s storm’.

Rather than inflame the sarcasm and condescension, I'll just point out that I never said/claimed to be the only person who has fun with sub-optimized characters. Also, my conclusion wasn't that such a character is "marginally useful at best," in fact, I was disagreeing with that premise entirely.

I actually like Akash, in either version of the build. Keeping in mind that the DM has ruled that he gets Scorpion Whips, this is a moot point, but even if he didn't, Akash wouldn't "marginally useful at best," unless your only measure of usefulness is damage per round, caused solely by your character (remember that CR is calculated based on a foe's/trap's danger to a PARTY of characters).

What are the primary advantages of whips? Reach, and Combat Maneuver flexibility - not damage. With a whip, you can perform Trip and Disarm attacks at a range that prevents AoOs, at a statistically significant bonus, and without the risk of being tripped yourself if you fail the roll.

Against CR2 opponents, you have the ability to remove their primary damage source, knock them prone, and/or knock them unconscious with non-lethal damage (and for a Sadist, that last part may be the single greatest advantage of using a whip...because now I get to tie up my unconscious enemy, and watch them suffer as I play with them in a controlled environment once I wake them up, and bring out my badass, scary-looking dagger, etc.).

But let's look at the disarm/trip abilities.

Disarm gives you a +2 bonus to the disarm attempt, and, again, performed at Reach, avoids an AoO. Now that CR2 enemy is significantly less effective, and far more at the mercy of your companions (who probably do have more damaging weapons to use). It also provides that psychological edge for a Sadist, as I see my opponent's eyes widen with fear, now that they're feeling far less competent and their weapon is at my feet.

Trip, again at Reach (no AoO), lets you put that opponent on the floor, where you can 5' step up switch weapons, and get all stabby (or smashy, or slashy) on a -4AC, and get an AoO when the opponent stands up. Or you can just leave him prone at the feet of your fellow party member who has a big, damage-dealing weapon of her own that becomes much more effective against that -4AC, and *they* get the free attack when the opponent tries to stand up. And, once again, the Sadist part of you gets to enjoy the opponent's predicament and fear. There's no bonus to Trip, like you get with Disarm, but you *can* use your enhancement bonuses (coming at level 4) and any Feat bonuses (like Weapon Focus, or Finesse...), so there is an advantage over using non-Trip weapons. And, if you fail miserably, you can just drop the whip, and pull out your backup (because who doesn't carry two whips, right?).

The other thing folks forget about the Trip property is that it includes the Reposition and Drag maneuvers, as well. Which lets you pull your enemy into positions where you can then switch weapons and 5' into a flanking position, which means that scary dagger (or mace, or whatever) suddenly is a lot more dangerous that that straight 1d4. Or, again, you can just put them in a position where your buddies can go to town on them (or line them up for a bull-rush over a cliff-face, for example, perhaps after disarming them, so that your bull-rushing party member doesn't provoke an AoO...).

I really like the possibilities for a character like Akash. My point is that straight damage-dealing potential is not the only way to measure effectiveness, or fun-having.

And yes, I think 3 years is long enough to wait for such fun and shenanigans, so I hope Akash gets in - you'll have a blast with him, I'm sure (I would!).

Oh, a question for the GM about the diabolist prestige class.

As a pact wizard, Wilcrim's familiar becomes an imp once he reaches level 7. I'm perfectly fine with going straight wizard, but I was also considering going into the diabolist prestige class. If he does, there's some wonky rules for getting an imp companion that uses animal companion progression instead of progression as a familiar.

Could the two stack somehow, or would one just replace the other?

You kids stop fighting or so help me, I will turn this recruitment thread around!

I give. :-)

No fighting from me. I don't wanna miss Wally World!

Maximo the "Brave" wrote:

Isn't the GM supposed to do that?

Are you implying that the great Maximo the Brave cannot bring peace to this thread?

Not at all. Just an observation.

I believe you do get both. Congratulations, you have two imps whispering in your ear at the same time.

I would have, but I've been busy today and didn't get on until just now. And Maximo solved the problem for me by the time I got here.

3 people marked this as a favorite.

I did?

...I mean, of course I did! Who else, but the mighty Maximo bring about peace!? HAH! HA HA HA HA HAAAaaa... ha!

"Hmm. Well, I believe my player's sorry he doubted you."

By the way, Maximo, your BaB should be +2 because you're a 3rd level Inquisitor.

Here is my submission! Finishing up the last question as we speak. Man it's coming down to the wire!

No kidding.

I eagerly await the selection.

OK,

Just under the wire, here's Meshach. I'll make a profile for him if selected, and finish off his gear based on party composition/need.

He might be a Champion one day, or a Guardian. He's a helper, who happens to be good at shooting people from ambush.

If I can pick Mwangi Polyglot as his bonus language, I will. If not, it'll be a standard Aasimar bonus language. Easy fix once selection is made.

Meshach

Class Abilities:

Studied Target:
A slayer can study an opponent he can see as a move action. The slayer then gains a +1 bonus on Bluff, Knowledge, Perception, Sense Motive, and Survival checks attempted against that opponent, and a +1 bonus on weapon attack and damage rolls against it. The DCs of slayer class abilities against that opponent increase by 1. A slayer can only maintain these bonuses against one opponent at a time; these bonuses remain in effect until either the opponent is dead or the slayer studies a new target.
If a slayer deals sneak attack damage to a target, he can study that target as an immediate action, allowing him to apply his studied target bonuses against that target (including to the normal weapon damage roll).

Accuracy:
At 1st level, a sniper halves all range increment penalties when making ranged attacks with a bow, crossbow, or firearm.
This ability replaces track.

Slayer Talents:
As a slayer gains experience, he learns a number of talents that aid him and confound his foes. Starting at 2nd level and every 2 levels thereafter, a slayer gains one slayer talent. Unless otherwise noted, a slayer cannot select an individual talent more than once.

*Rogue Talent – Sniper’s Eye:
Benefit: A rogue with this talent can apply her sneak attack damage on ranged attacks targeting foes within 30 feet that benefit from concealment. Foes with total concealment are still immune.

Deadly Range:
At 2nd level, when the sniper makes an attack against a target who is within his weapon's first range increment and completely unaware of his presence, that attack ignores the 30 foot range limit on ranged sneak attacks, and if it is a sneak attack, he adds his sniper level as a bonus on his sneak attack damage roll. After this first attack, the target is aware of the sniper's presence.

Sneak Attack:
At 3rd level, if a slayer catches an opponent unable to defend itself effectively from his attack, he can strike a vital spot for extra damage. The slayer's attack deals extra damage anytime his target would be denied a Dexterity bonus to AC (whether the target actually has a Dexterity bonus or not), or when the slayer flanks his target. This additional damage is 1d6 at 3rd level, and increases by 1d6 every 3 levels thereafter. Should the slayer score acritical hit with a sneak attack, this additional damage is not multiplied. Ranged attacks can count as sneak attacks only if the target is within 30 feet.

With a weapon that deals nonlethal damage (like a sap, whip, or unarmed strike), a slayer can make a sneak attack that deals nonlethal damageinstead of lethal damage. He cannot use a weapon that deals lethal damage to deal nonlethal damage in a sneak attack, not even with the usual –4 penalty.

The slayer must be able to see the target well enough to pick out a vital spot and must be able to reach such a spot. A slayer cannot use sneak attack while striking a creature with concealment.

Slayer's class skills are Acrobatics (Dex), Bluff (Cha), Climb (Str), Craft (Int), Disguise (Cha), Heal (Wis), Intimidate (Cha), Knowledge(dungeoneering) (Int), Knowledge (geography) (Int), Knowledge (local) (Int), Perception (Wis), Profession (Wis), Ride (Dex), Sense Motive (Wis), Stealth(Dex), Survival (Wis), and Swim (Str).

History:
Meshach was born to moderately wealthy Vudrani parents on the island of Jalmeray. He lived a normal life, mostly, competing with other children in games and contests of strength and speed and will, especially while visiting the local temple of Irori. Meschach won a lot of these competitions, often without having to really exert himself. Sadly, Meshach wasn’t always the most gracious of winners, and his tendency to gloat didn’t win him an excessive number of friends.

In an effort to teach him some humility, Meshach’s parents sent him to train with the Irori monks. Suddenly, the challenges of strength and skill weren’t nearly as easy. Meshach still didn’t lose much, and when he did, he merely worked harder, until he found a way to defeat the challenges he’d failed at. He didn’t get to brag much, however, as any time he successfully completed a challenge, the monks just gave him another, more difficult challenge to face. The monks pushed him and pushed him, for a number of years. Meshach loved the challenge, and the growth. What he did not love was the fisticuffs. Even with his physical gifts, Meschach never really got the hang of the hand-to-hand fighting styles the monks taught. He could win in sparring matches, but never with much style or quality of form. Instead, he just hit faster and harder than the other kids, while ducking their return blows.

Then, around his fifteenth birthday, Meshach just… stopped growing. Where the other boys started getting bigger and stronger, Meshach didn’t. In a few short months, his physical advantages were lost, and the boys he’d been able to beat with ease suddenly found themselves looking down on Meshach – literally.

It was roughly a year later that the transformation happened. Meshach’s blue-black hair – always light and feathery before – turned into actual feathers. His light brown eyes faded in color, and became golden, like those of an eagle. Always “different,” Meshach had now become “other.” His classmates did not take this change well, and neither did Meshach.

It was one of the monks who figured it out. Meshach wasn’t fully human. As it turned out, his ancestry included a history of close relationships with the guardian spirits, known as Garuda.

Apparently, the relationships were closer than even the stories had told, because Meshach had the blood of celestials in his veins.
With this new discovery, Meshach was removed from the monk training program, and put into a special apprenticeship with one of the oldest monks in the temple.

Brother Wind, so old that he could barely walk any more, was nevertheless the greatest archer in the history of the brotherhood. He was also the last member of the brotherhood to have ever seen (and apparently out-shot) a Garuda.

Meshach spent forty years at Brother Wind’s feet, learning how to use a bow, how to make them, how to carve and fletch arrows (using his own feathers), and how to make a bow part of himself. To anticipate the winds, the movement of a target, to make an arrow travel as a thought.

By the time Brother Wind moved on to the next phase of his existence, Meshach had reached his maturity, grown into his frame, and gained some basic level of competency with a bow and arrow. With Brother Wind gone, it was time for Meshach to walk the world, and find his own challenges.

So he did, leaving Jalmeray to explore the world, with little but his self-made bow and arrows in hand, and the teachings of Irori in his heart. Meshach spent time in the Mwangi Expanse, testing himself against the jungle, hunting for food, learning to climb and hide amongst the trees and vines. He spent five years in the jungle, testing himself, improving his skills, growing. Until the Shadowfall, and then the serpentfolk began to rise.

At that point, the games stopped, and the challenges became more serious – and with more serious consequences. While Meshach did a good job of hunting and ambushing serpentfolk, he did so originally with the same mindset that he had always held – that of challenging himself, taking on tasks because they were difficult, killing enemies who were powerful – and of letting others know what he had done (because what was the point of winning, if no one knew the score?).

Unfortunately, his lack of discretion led to reprisals, and the deaths of friends. Eventually, Meshach could not stay in the Expanse. His presence was a danger, and caused more harm to the cause than good. Heartbroken and frustrated, he returned home to Jalmeray.

His reputation had preceded him, and Meshach found a cold welcome on the island. With all of the troubles in the world, the island nation had tightened its borders, and wasn’t looking to welcome trouble or trouble makers. Meshach very quickly found that he was sought out by a very small minority of Jalmerans – those who felt that they should do something about what was going on in the world, rather than hiding from it. Many of these folks hired themselves out as mercenaries in troubled lands, or set out as small groups of adventurers, seeking to make a difference in lands where hope seemed fragile. They saw Meshach as an example of what could be done – after all, hadn’t he been a thorn in the side of the serpentfolk for more than a year? Hadn’t he done enough damage that the enemy had raised entire villages to get to him? For those who hated what they saw happening on the mainland, the temptation to be difference makers was strong.

Meshach resisted this temptation. He had seen what happened when even a skilled warrior like himself tried to make a difference in such places. Good people died. Villages were destroyed, as retaliation for the action of “heroes.”

For almost two years, he held out, staying in his parents’ home, doing his best not to hear the stories of what went on outside, in the world.

But then, the broken “heroes” started coming home. Those who had gone out to do something, who had done things, came back. Some missing limbs, or eyes, or hope – casualties of the rising darkness. They told heartbreaking stories of victories that had been snatched away from them for lack of one or two more good people willing to do the right thing. Of betrayals by people who had been terrorised or beaten into submission. Of small bastions of hope, overrun and snuffed out like candles before a bore tide of black water.

Meshach realized that it didn’t matter. If he stayed on this island, good people would die anyway – and he would rot away in fear and inaction. And that was not how he was fated to die. His blood, his ancestors would not stand for him to die in quiet, fearful obscurity, doing nothing.

There was word in the latest stories – word that an evil had risen that was so great that even the dark forces in the world had taken pause, and would unite to fight it. Word that, in the city of Absalom, great warriors would band together, take a stand, make a difference.

Word was, even that wouldn’t be enough.

Maybe it would not, who was Meshach to say? How was he to know? What he did know was that he would be there, doing his best to make that difference. And if it was a doomed endeavor, so be it. Meshach would die doing something, facing the greatest challenge of his life, rather than hiding from it.

As the ship left Jalmeray for Absalom, Meshach’s eyes stared forward in anticipation. He did not look back.

Questions:

1. What does your character look like? (Height, weight, age, appearance, etc.)

Meshach is just a hair under six feet tall, with wiry muscle on a thin frame. Dusky of skin, with golden eyes that remind one of a bird of prey, his long, windblown hair is blue-black, and feather-light. Looking closer, one would almost swear that his hair was actually made of feathers.

2. What is your character’s personality?
Meshach is intense, and very present in every moment. There is a sadness in him, and a determination, though he does not seem interested in talking about the past, or brooding about the future. He is determined to do good, in some way, for the persons he encounters. He strives to improve himself always, but without being dissatisfied in who he is.
He’s a very intense Taoist, in many ways.

3. Where is your character from? Golarion has changed a lot in the last few years. Where you are from can mean a lot about who your character is.
Meshach is from Jalmeray, but has spent several years in the jungles of Mwangi, hunting Serpentfolk.

4. Why does your character have the class, feats, weapon, etc. that they do? Where and how did they learn to fight? What made them take up this path?
That’s covered in the background story, I think. He started in just trying to be the best he could be at the things he was already good at, taking joy in besting any challenge (or challenger). Then he began fighting in earnest, and seeing the consequences of failing in a challenge, or of being too bold in his successes. He’s been humbled, but still knows that his skills and abilities are special, and intends to use them to make a positive difference.

5. Is your character religious? If so, who do they worship and why?
He is, though a bit more out of rote habit and training than a deeply-examined belief – though that may be changing a bit. He was raised and trained by monks of Irori.

6. How has your character's life changed in the last few years? What has the changing world done to your character and what do you intend to do about it?
See #4, above. He’s been bitter, and now he’s tired of that. He’s a big believer that the most important person is the one in front of you right now, the most important thing is the thing that you are doing, and the most important place to be is where you are right now – because you don’t know that you’ll ever see another person, do another thing, or be any other place, and so the only moment that you have in which to make a difference is this one. So he is present in every moment, hoping for better things to come, while enjoying the things that are now.
He plans to do the best he can to make a difference, somehow.

Well we are down to it, good luck everyone, I've enjoyed reading the backstories of your characters, our GM has his work cut out.

I was hoping to get all four vignettes done by the deadline, it looks like it may only be three. Oh well, I will probably still write the fourth, just cause I'm that anal-retentive. Again good luck all!

The Knighting:

Elek was at the picket-line currying the big dapple grey that Paralictor Krunug considered his finest charger. Speaking softly to the stallion ”Why are you such a mean cuss, only person you don’t bite is Sir Krunug.” ’and me,’ he thought with a smile. Elek’s attention was drawn away from the stud by the drumming sound of horses approaching from the north. Elek stops currying the grey telling him, ”I need to be done for now, I must fetch that nasty old black that your master is riding.” The grey nickers in response. Reaching into his pouch and pulling out a small dried apple, not much more than a crabapple, the grey snorts in derision. ”What do you expect, we’re in the wormwound, if you don’t want it I will give it to the black, he’ll eat anything.” as if in understanding the grey gobbled the apple out of Elek’s palm, as the young man patted his neck.

Elek watchs the riders as they approach the camp. ’the dust cloud is wrong, it’s too thin and too spread out.’ As the unit of light cavalry drew near, Elek noted the irregularities, Several mounts were riderless running with the troop but out of formation, all the riders without lances showing other signs of combat, over half were doubled over there saddles from injury, some mounts were being ridden double. ’they’ve been in combat and from the looks of it not just a skirmish, hope they gave as good as they got’ Elek ran to the command tent where he knew the Paralictor would be headed, the sound of wounded men and horses replacing the rumble of cavalry.

Paralictor Krunug, galloped to the tent, the black coming to a stop his eyes rolling up into his head; frothing, sweaty and bloody, bleeding from claw marks on his hind quarter which tore through the chainmail. His master in no better shape; what appeared to be a bite wound on his right thigh and his left arm hanging limp from a wound similar to that of the black stallion. Dismounting quickly, wincing and frowning as he hands the reigns to Elek, ”Get the grey saddled, and send any messengers in immediately.” Turning back adding quickly ”And if that Iomedae-loving saw-bones tries to run in here tell her to take care of the injured knights first, before she fusses about me!” As the Paralictor heads toward the tent he rips his Lobster Tail helmet and throws it into the tent crashing into some unfortunate piece of furniture.

Elek begins giving orders to the small group of junior squires and older pages that have gathered, as he does so he notices the number of disheveled Maralictor’s arriving to join the commander. ’only five officers four of them wounded; Becse, Oquz and Tizane are missing. Taking the barding and saddle off of the black stallion, the page he sent to fetch salve for the wound returning. Elek busied himself rubbing salve in the wound, as he does so he explains to the page, ”The salve will keep it from getting infected, give him a little water then we will walk him to cool him off and keep him from stiffening up until a medic or cleric can come check on him, once he is cared for we will feed and curry him.” As Elek explains he notices a rider approaching, from the south-west.

He quickly recognizes Ruphio, who had been knighted last year, though he had been transferred to the messenger service rather than the cavalry. Ruphio, instead of riding straight to the command tent, galloped to where Elek was working with the black. Startling the stallion causing it to rear and kick. Ruphio smirked, as he stopped his palfrey, dismounting he threw the reins at the page. Ignoring Elek’s glare he attempted to bait him”Did you hear?” smirking even deeper ”You don’t know yet, or you would be…” Just then, from the tent Krunug’s voice rings out. ”Ruphio, here, now! Rupio sends a look of hatred at Elek as he moves to the tent. He never did forget I bested him young, wonder what that was he was blubbering about. Nodding his head to the page, ”Walk his mare till he comes back out, I don’t think he is going to be here long.”

Elek’s prediction was right, a few minutes later Ruphio came storming out of the command tent, going straight to his mare he jerked the reigns away from the page, and mounting rode out of camp. Not long after that the officers left the tent, one of them coming to Elek and telling him, ”Assign your duties to the junior squires, the Paralictor wants all the senior squires outside the tent in ten minutes, spread the word.” Elek nodded, waving to Artan ”Take this horse to the medical stable and tell any senior squires you see to get over here post haste!’ Elek began spreading the orders through the cam[, making sure he was in front of the command tent before Paralictor Krunug joined them.

Commander Krunug stepped out of the tent, his leg and shoulder bandaged, his arm in a sling. ’At least he took those ten minutes to get patched up.’ The low drone from the group of young men ceased as their commander raised his hand. ”As you know we, as a unit, were at eighty-percent strength before today. As you can see we are well below that now. What you don’t know is that the action we have seen today is a part of an organized push from the demonic horde like we have not seen in a generation. We have been commanded to screen our Orders flank, using a fighting retreat attempting to slow the enemy and calculate his strengths. We will send our wounded, our squires, our pages and our non-combatants straight to the main army as they fall back to a position of strength.” Krunug takes a moment to look at the field of eighty-six boys.

”The reason I am taking the time to explain this is that no Squire will be required to take the oath until they feel they are ready. Normally they are encouraged to talk to their family or mentor or commander before making such a decision.” The boys begin to look at each other, ”But frankly I don’t have time. I have saddles that need filled and if you gentlemen are up to the task you will fill them today.” Eyes widened, jaws dropped, the commander continued. ”Any boy who is not ready to take the oath may return to their duties and the baggage train. Any man who will ride with me to protect or lives, our order, our brotherhood, our way of life, our very existence may raise his right hand and say the oath with me.” Not a soul stirred, they had waited their short lives for this, every senior squire raised his hand and as their commander said the oath they recited it with him.

”I do solemnly swear by Aroden and His Herald, and in free and voluntary desire, to serve as a Knight of Cheliax in the Order of the Light. I do swear to be both a true and chivalric Knight, to obey my Commanders and to aid my bretheren. I also swear by all that is holy and dear unto me, to follow the tenants of the teachings of Aroden: Community, Law, Protection, Knowledge and Glory, to relieve the distress of Humanity following Aroden’s example and to fulfill my knightly obligations. This oath do I give of my own free and independent will, so help me Aroden and his Herald!”

As they began to realize what they had done Paralictor Krunug raised his voice again ”Duty demands we stay celebration until our order is safe. We leave within the hour. Pass your immediate responsibilities to the squire below you. You will need two mounts, draw them from the pickets.” Smiling slightly ”You know better than most what mounts are available. If you have not been issued a breastplate and lobster-tail helmet draw them from supply, when supply is out speak to the wounded knights, they have been ordered to assist you. We will assemble in the north field in an hour, go!”

As the excited young men disperse, Krunug calls to Elek, turning he walks over to his mentor. ”Tell me Elek, do you think they are ready?” Elek ponders for a moment, ’What was it mother said, ”hard time call for hard decisions” he nods his head, ”They are as ready as I am sir.” Krunug smiles, showing his fatigue, ”No son, no they are not. You’ve been ready at least six months; I was waiting till we were back in Kenabres so your parents could celebrate with us, some celebration huh.” Elek shrugged, ”Hard times sir.” Krunug nodded his head ”So they are, so they are”

Continuing as he looked Elek in the eye, ”How much did Ruphio tell you?” Elek cocked his head curiously ”Nothing sir, Why?” His mentor exhaled deeply ”The attack, was the width of the front, the primary attack being the wardstones near Kenabres, when the stones were down the demon hoard attacked Kenabres itself. The demon Khorramzedeh defeated Terendelev in personal combat.” Krunug paused for a moment to let the death of the great silver dragon sink in. ”And Kenebres itself?” softly asked Elek. "The walls still stand mostly, the city devastated, but the Military Orders outside the walls took the brunt of the damage.” again letting the information sink in. Elek’s eyes opened wide, as he forced the words out. ”and our order?” measuring his words carefully the older man shakes his head ”It is believed that everyone outside the wall was lost. Those inside the city proper may have had a chance…” they both knew what the odds were of members of the order being inside the city during the festival.

Elek lowers his head in understanding, ”If the squires had known many would have wanted to stay with the baggage train going to the city, so they could check on their families.” Krunug nodded ”Can you blame them?” Elek looked up, long and hard at his mentor his friend, and answered. ”Yes, I can, they are needed here, hard times call for hard decisions, but they also call for hard men. If we are to mourn our family we can do that as easily fighting demons as not.” Elek continued, anticipating his commanders next request. ” They will eventually hear about Kenabres, but not from me.” Krunug nodded ”When you go to the picket line to gather your mounts have Artan bring me the Dapple Grey saddled and the bay on a lead.” Elek saluted hand to chest, he had much to do and less than an hour to do it in.

Character Backstory:

Born to the head of a small house, Lustaria who turned from worshiping Demon lords to worshiping the Goddess Calastria. Calastri Clitus was to be the first hi priest of Calastria of a Drow noble house in some time, if ever. Thus she was blessed upon her birth buy the worshipers of Calastria. But the Drow's hate Elves and the Elven god is despised just as well. Another house seeking to harm Lustaria, tried to assassinate Calastri Clitus the eldest daughter of house Lustaria. However there plan was foiled as she was blessed by the goddess and her protectors forewarned. After failing to damage house Lustaria and being thoroughly embarrassed, its rivals waited and bidded their time. For ten years Lustaria's enemies waited and planned. On Calastri Clitus thirteenth birthday Lustaia's enemies saw their chance to rid themselves of a rival. For this birthday marked her ascension in the house hierarchy to a priestess of Calastria. Using the Drow dislike of Elves and their gods to rally support, they attacked in the middle of the ceremony. During the attack on their estate the house matriarch and her first born daughter, Calastri Clitus managed to escape. Fleeing Drow territory to the surface, the matriarch strayed to close to the ward stones and was attacked by a couple of demons who had made their way through. As the matriarch tried to fight her way through to safety she and her daughter became separated. When she finally found her daughter again she was lingering near death. Having made a bargain with the demons for safety and aid she left her daughter at the temple of Irori and headed back to Drow territory, to rebuild her house. Calastri Clitus dangle near death in a coma for several weeks before coming to and hearing of what had happened.

Growing up in the presence of the priests and monks of Irori aspired to be like them. For seven years she followed the path of the priestess but soon realized it was not for her. For her heart burned for some, for action of some sort. So she turned to the path of the monk to cool the heat of her blood. However this only lasted for a decade before Calastri found she burned for more. That her lust had only grown to a lust for violence. So Calastri Clitus seeing her path change once more decided to change professions seeking out the Hamalatsu. After completing her training with Hamalatsu she left the faith of Irori and became a prostitute of Calastria. This was her most glorious choice and she revealed in the sex, blood, and excess which came her position. She held this glorious position for two decades until her thoughts turned to her mother and her fallen house, and the burning returned, a burning for vengeance.

After studying and becoming a prostitute Calastri Clitus sets out to do her gods bidding by seeking her vengeance upon the demon lords, for both her treatment and the death of her mother. So Calastri Clitus went on quest to reestablish her house in worship and service of Calastria. Upon her return Calastri sought vengeance, a domain of her god. And with her blessing she sneaked into the grounds of the house that had plotted the fall of her family. While they were sleeping she slaughtered every man woman and child of noble. However she did not escape unscathed, she was dealt a near severe wound. By the time she had made it back to the surface she was near dead. She only survived by a chance meeting with a Prostitute of Calastria, who over many months nursed her back to health.

Waiitttt!! was the deadline midnight tonight or yesterday. I thought tonight and blocked of several hours this afternoon to put in a submission.

lol if I screwed up and was mistaken please tell me. obviously my fault.

if it's open till midnight tonight please let me know as I've got a ranged Divine Hunter Paladin/Oracle who wants to be blasty with ray spells.

let me know either way

thanks

I'm pretty sure it's midnight tonight. At least that's what I've been aiming for. I'll be very sad if it already passed.

Alright, after a lot of deliberation and going back and forth on what to create, along with working on deciding on a backstory and personality, I (Loup Blanc) have finished my submission. Well, mostly. I've answered the questions, although I'm hoping to get together a writing sample by the end of the day that can hopefully do a little more to showcase the character. And I'm holding off on purchasing any mundane equipment until I find out whether or not Aramus has been accepted.

As far as a mythic path goes, Aramus could easily pick up Archmage, Champion, or Guardian, and may even Dual Path between two of them. Whatever ends up working out. I'd say Archmage or Guardian would be the first choice, with Champion coming a little behind, but anything goes.

Also, the avatar picture isn't perfect, because it looks less like the jovial laughter I was hoping to find, and more like a crazy rage. If anyone knows of a picture that fits better, that'd be awesome!

Alright, here's my own submission, finally clocking in. A gray gardener from Galt, as a Slayer/Investigator. I'll have the backstory up on the alias, but I believe I've told you previously about the majority of his backstory.

Also, for the spreadsheet, Jonathan will be a Dual Path Trickster/Champion.

Recruitment is still open until midnight tonight. So anyone who's putting finishing touches on their characters still has a few hours. And yeah, it's probably going to take me most of the week to get through all of these. I apologize for the delay and I'll try to be prompt, but I have a lot of great submissions to go through.

Seeing as how there have been quite a few new submissions and there is still time until the end of the recruitment, I think I will put up one last post with the list of submissions tomorrow. It should be the final one. Hopefully it will at least speed up the looking into all the candidates. :-)

GM, I know there had been talk of you possibly doing a second table or whatnot, but I must recommend against it unless you have a very strong personal urge to do so. In my experience, it is always better to go back for seconds later than to bite off more than you can chew. Especially with the holiday season coming up, time will be a tall order for many people.

This isn't to impugn your time management ability, but just some advice if you're on the fence.

Also, I notice I am essentially alone in the choice of marshal. Is there something wrong with the path?

Actually, Melek Taus is also looking to go Marshal. Plus there are a few others who have it as one of their two possible path choices. So... not entirely alone. :-)

And to prove it, I think I'll have Triel stay a Marshal after all. :)

It's good if you want to be a good support character--and you have abilities that improve your team's action economy.

Yeah, I've already decided against doing two tables. I don't have the time to do so and trying to adapt the plot for two groups that take different actions when I'm homebrewing the whole thing would be too much work.

I've filled out Acharn Edasseril background and personality as well as his crunch. Hopefully that'll be sufficient to earn a slot in the game. I think he would be an awesome character to play for this game, a hero rising from the ashes of his people. I would be really excited to get into this game, it sounds awesome.

please click on the profile to see my submission Toran Oakfriend a Ranged Oradin who'll be blasting enemies with Consecrated Scorching Rays while healing the meatshields up front..... at least that what he'll be doing eventually :P

Dual Path Mythic (Archmage/Hierophant)

3 people marked this as a favorite.

Alright, Recruitment is closed! This is going to take me a while to sort through, so expect a party to be picked out at the end of the week. I have a lot of applicants to go through. Please continue to pay attention either to this thread or to your PMs! I will likely be asking questions and the like of people. I would hate for a top choice to lose a place because you don't get back to me.

Archarn can work perfectly fine alongside other arcane casters or melee focused characters or he can handle either of those roles alone. He's not incredibly tanky yet, though between frequent use of his wand of shield and his ability to parry a few times per day he'll hopefully be able to survive until next level when he gets access to mirror image.

I don't think it matters who gets picked at this point...

Whoever gets in, the game is guaranteed to be interesting to follow. :)
